Rolling Dance Mongrel 2012: The Bloodening
You know that music that doesn’t quite fit house/techno/dubstep/bass/funky/electro/beats/whatever... The stuff that sits on the fringes or you know just bangs and there isn’t a thread where it fits.

Feeling these from Mella Dee
http://soundcloud.com/forefrontrecordings/sets/mella-dee-ruff-cuts-ep-fore005
Proper swung low slung slow deep dark jackin house I guess.
Haven't opened the old one since it became one giant smash
But I'm really liking the newest Gerry Read track.
http://soundcloud.com/fourth-wave/gerry-read-evidence
Gerry Read is too good
really into what he's doing at the moment. Think he's got an album on the way at some point.
Bass Clef
http://www.factmag.com/2012/09/06/stream-dawn-chorus-pedal-bass-clefs-latest-analogue-house-fantasia/
New one on Idle Hands is pretty sweet, takes off from where that awsoem album on Punch Drunk left off really. Load of fun.
Albums wise...
LV - Sebenza
Is something else, can't stop playing it. Maybe my favourite of the year I dunno yet.
Dusk & Blackdown - Dasaflex
Pretty sweet, still digesting it really. Proper into the first half so far some real quiality moments.
Need to get on the new Mala and FlyLo ones pretty swift really not had a chance to go deep into them yet.
yes!
Sebenza is sick. amazing energy, brilliant combination of vocals and production.
I haven't looked in that thread in a while, care to sum it up with the best full lengths and 12 or 10"s?
nope
haha too many 12"s albums might be easier... LV, LHF, Actress, DJ Rashad, Shackleton, Mix Mup & Kassem Mosse, Bass Clef, Tuff Sherm & PMM, Henny Moan, Dean Blunt, Ukkonen, Yöt, Jahilyya Fields, Dariius, Nick Edwards/Ekoplekz (Editons Mego & Punch Drunk)...
The Nick Edwards record is so so good
longform compositions suit him better I think. Also like his EPs for Perctrax though, he could be a hell of a techno producer if he wanted to be...
His new album for Punch Drunk is ace too
I bet he'd be ace at dance music if he gave it a go he use to write Gutter Breakz: http://gutterbreakz.blogspot.co.uk/ which was one of THE blogs for dubstep and all that good stuff back in the day. He knows his stuff.
oh yeah
he's done an album with Baron Mordant too under the name eMMplekz called IZOD Days on Mordant Music. He's been busy haha.

That's some next level shit for sure. Easily the best I've heard from LV. All sorts of different styles on there, but they all sound like they belong together.
New Horizontal Ground sounds good

nice one.
Villalobos - Dependent and Happy is an absolute monster.
I can count the number of recognizable sounds on one hand. The dude must be from outer space. It's the only explanation. Intense vibes.

Take it we've all been keeping up to date with the Old Apparatus EP releases?
The last three (Derren, Realise and now Alfur) have been awesome. Deep, soulful, abrasive and just generally incredible sounding music.

Interview with Blawan
http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1670
He's been on one this year, his techno sets are insane he can play some of the same stuff as traditional techno guys but somehow makes them bang so much harder. Badman.
pretty hyped to see him next weekend
first time, too.
Really into tracks from...
Braiden - Belfry Tower [Rushour]

The Bloodening!
Bit of a jag.
'The Modern Library' project that I started up has morphed into 'Blowing Up The Workshop', and the second mix is up- a tailor made and raw techno shakedown from PROSTITUTES who has a cool album called Psychedelic Black out this year and a follow up coming on Digitalis early next year. New column on DiS should be pulled together soon too.

FaltyDL - Straight & Arrow
http://stereogum.com/1194521/faltydl-straight-arrow-video/video/
Creepy video, but a really nice tune, picked it up this morning. It's basically a Floating Points track to begin with by I find DL has a real knack for vocals sometimes, like on Hip Love which is still one of my favourites of his. I know it's a really over-used technique but he can really stretch and twist vocals into a really emotive thing rather than just a refrain to make something anthemic.
Also the 12" comes with Four Tet and Mike Q remixes
:)
WIFE
On Left Blank is apparently an Irish Black Metal guy from Alter of Plagues http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNQh3I8Pumc sounds like Portishead/Massive Attack to me but I dig it.
This is nice.
feeling this
even more so than Altar Of Plagues (and I like Altar Of Plagues). Endings is especially great.
This'll be interesting to the indie nerds on here no doubt
Beyond the laptop
RA travelled to this year's Ether festival in London to spend time with a group of artists—Mount Kimbie, Apparat, Bass Clef, the Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble—who warp the perception of live dance music.

Old old old classic dubplate making it to wax for the first time, sublime as always. W/John Snow.
Dro Carey
Goes Grimy with this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPQCr5Ky5iA and a Merky Ace vocal: http://soundcloud.com/templarsound/tswl01 jeeeeeez its good, spooky remix too.
Sigha's got an album out on Hotflush not had chance to hear it yet mind. Bits I've heard are good tho, I'm just not in the mood for yet another industrial-ish leaning techno album right this second.
Wife sounds wicked in that acoustic/Bruial/Mount Kimbie done by a Black Metal guy kinda way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNQh3I8Pumc
Kinda bummed out about Apple Pips and 3024 recently they've not been very inspirational for a while. Trevino is so generic its unreal and Phat Chex sounds like Nu-Skool Breaks and I can't go back there haha. Hotflush too damn that Scuba bit is boring.
New this weeeeeek-ish.
Spaceape
Hyperdub are giving away The Spaceape’s Xorcism, a deeply personal seven track EP centred around the producer’s ongoing battle with cancer.
The Spaceape – real name Stephen Samuel Gordon – has been suffering Neurolymphamatosis for the past three years, and a press release distributed today revealed that Xorcism is based around the producer coming to terms with the illness. The EP is being given away because it’s built from samples of voodoo music and therefore “unsellable”.
The tracks featured on Xorcism are essentially a series of vignettes, each clocking in at under three minutes. Track titles like “Your Angel Has Come “, “He Gave His Body Over To Science” and “Up In Flames” reflect the gravity of the themes explored on the release; sonically it’s heavily influenced by Haitian music, with rhythmically complex percussive elements buried beneath The Spaceape’s typically poetic lyrical flow.
The aforementioned press release also reveals that Gordon’s condition also heavily influenced his 2011 Black Sun collaboration with Kode9, and suggests relistening to tracks such as “Black Smoke”, “Neon Red Sign” and “The Cure” to “understand the context to this new batch of solo material”. Hyperdub have also included a list of the various samples used on the EP – see below – which makes for essential reading for inquisitive minds.
You can download the full EP for free by entering your email address in the widget below.

Sounds like any other Burial clone to me
not sure why its been picked up on really.
http://www.residentadvisor.net/review-view.aspx?id=11972
so is this the right thread for Holly Herndon then?
Of everything popping up at the darker end of techno, her stuff is easily the most interesting to me. It's really cold and academic, but strangely compelling. I've been listening to it a lot, and I'll probably keep returning to it for quite awhile, mostly because I don't have any records that sound even remotely similar.
'Fade' is a banger:
http://youtu.be/frmJKaPT5U8
'Breathe' makes me really uneasy:
http://youtu.be/0J4JwVewpwY
:D
it seems to be obligatory for anyone talking about this to use the word academic.
No point in trying to avoid it
that would be like trying to describe Coltrane without using the word 'saxophone.'

I was just thinking the other day that its been ages since I heard a mix from him, he's an underated DJ too, him and Brackles can hold their own easily with Oneman, Braiden, Ben UFO, Jackmaster, Bok Bok.
Beneath 2x12" on Keysound is a beast
Happa is sounding pretty damn good for 15
Kahn & Neek go dancehall funky and its kinda fun
Geiom, Visionist, Ossie, DVA all wort ha listen too.
Love Happa too.
Oh man, just stumbled across Beat of the Drum
Such a good track. 15!
Yeah its pretty mad innit
There have been some good producers come up at like 14/15/16 people like Skream, Benga and most of the grime scene from early 2000s still look about 12 haha

Mixed thoughts on Jummy after a few listens
There are a couple of bangers on there (particularly Let's Make it Deeper and the full version of Evidence), but quite a bit of filler too. Feel it could have been a couple of awesome EPs rather than a reasonable album.
Sad news

Laurel Halo
New single on Hyperdub
http://boomkat.com/vinyl/609273-laurel-halo-sunlight-on-the-faded-dub
Sounds ace, like some kind of fragmented epic detroit techno synth string type of thing. Has a dub of it too. Bonus.
this is excellent
what the hell is up with all those people who don't like her voice? I'll never understand.
KingThing & Resketch
have been making some super wonky synthy house/techno as 2ndSun that's hard and tuff in the right areas and soft/twinkly/gentle when it wants to be also. real surprising stuff with a wicked groove to it. they've got some bits forthcoming on well rounded next year i believe.
check out 'bespoked' (so sick!) and 'nix'. the collab with rubyrax is a ting too.

Kozzie freestyle on Higher Ground by TNGHT
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Rqba20PsVI&feature=share&list=UL7Rqba20PsVI
Mad how diffrent diffrent MCs can make it sound
https://soundcloud.com/bbc6music/gilles-kendrick_lamar-tnght
Kozzie wins that one for me by miles.
tbf to kendrick
i don't think he'd heard the track before or was aware of the structure, kozzie knew what he was jumping on and what he was going for.
not a massive fan of either, personally. couple of decent versions of bugg'n around though, even flylo manages better than either of those two.
yeah
well I dunno if Kozzie had heard it before it was a radio freestyle and grime guys aint usualy ones to jump on beats outside of their circle so who knows. Grime MCs have that live, I'll jump on anything the DJ drops mentality tho when its close to grime. But yeah Kendric wasn't ready didn't sound like he wanted to do it, but you know why be so lazy if your gonna put it out there. He's alright Kendric like what I've heard from him. Just showing how diffrent one track could sound more than anything plus if I stuck Kendric in someone might go oh shit then listen to Kozzie too, he's ace.
yah, fair play
i like a bit of kozzie, and there's no too ways, Kendrick gets schooled here, terrible performance... but live grime or dnb freestyling is a very different game anyway.
