ATP announce Camber Sands curators!
Hi
I'm dead chuffed to read TV on the Radio and Deerhunter will be curating at Camber Sands next year. I remember seeing TV on the Radio play there years ago.

TV On The Radio
Deerhunter
Shellac
saw TVOTR last year
they played Staring at the Sun straight into Wolf Like Me. PRETTY good.
oooh
didn't like the last one at all, but that'd be worth the fee alone.
That's pretty mouthwatering I have to say.
Deerhunter doing Cryptograms, Microcastle and Halcyon Digest in full too.
fuck
CRYPTOGRAMS IN FULL? I WANT TO GO TO THERE
Oh my god, I just realised this means they'll be playing Heatherwood
I don't think they've ever done it live
Fuck I have to go to this
But can't afford a ticket for a while. Never been to ATP before; is it ever possible to pick up tickets closer to the date?
always
It'll be nice to finally see some black people at ATP.
^ This guy
Question
What sort of bands do Deerhunter talk about liking in interviews? Only I'm a huge Bradford Cox obsessive, but just not sure if TVOTR might pick more bands that I'd like overall.
he'll pick Spoon and Dirty Projectors
for sure
Cox is really into US punk/hardcore/80s underground stuff
so I imagine there'll be a fair amount of that sort of thing. I can imagine it being pretty ecectic though.
On a nerdy sidenote, this will hopefully be my chance at last to buy some of Deerhunter's absurdly ellusive merch...
if this is the case
then I really hopes they pick Jello Biafra's Guantanamo School Of Medicine. They were just incredible at Rebellion Festival last year.
Cox really gushed over The Residents during the Matt Greoning show
so.... if he picks them, then I'm there
broadcast
lofi, ambient, warp, etc
It would be incredible if Broadcast played
Yeah
Some might say miraculous.
except that
james cargill is continuing to work as Broadcast, in one form or another: the Berberian Sound Studio soundtrack was entirely new material done under that name.
it obviously wouldn't be the same without trish, but it's not beyond the realms of possibility to think that Broadcast might continue in a slightly different form, maybe instrumental or as more of an audio / video thing with Julian House perhaps?
Wrong on Berberian Sound Studio, unfortunately
Broadcast worked on the soundtrack from 2009. Some of it was done when Trish Keenan was still alive and James Cargill did a lot of stuff afterwards.
The Knack
Cheers everyone
In conclusion, I still can't decide and will probably end up doing whatever my friends tell me to.
Playing 'Lake Somerset' for over an hour
My inkling is that TVOTR will pick a more interesting line up
But both should be decent curators, and those 3 Deerhunter shows are worth a fair chunk of the price on their own.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs on the TVOTR weekend?
... could happen!
So could Scarlett Johanssen
But I won't hold my breath.
What will you hold?
My stomach in
Probably
was thinking about the YYYs the other day
been awfully quiet recently. unless they're gonna surprise us they've missed their three year window for a new record.
New record being recorded with James Murphy right this moment
Is the James Murphy thing actually true?
Thought it was just a rumour. That'll be cool. Be interesting to hear how they get on without Sitek for the first time.
The Cryptograms set
should be incredible.
I'm sure Black Lips will be on that line up. Can't think of any other pals they've got. Maybe Spoon? Or The Breeders? They've all collaborated before.
he'll probably bring the entire Atlanta rap scene
Bradford seems to be well in with those guys, T.I and the like
That would be my dream weekend <33
Mine too
Doubt Black Lips...
not after last time. pretty sure Barry Hogan said they'd never play again.
what actually happened?
Didn't they break into someone's chalet and steal stuff?
As far as I'm aware, along with Killing Joke, they're the only band to have been banned from playing.
what about the butthole surfers?
didn't one of them hit a woman?
yeah i think he lashed out at a member of staff after she tried to wake him up and ask him to move or something
he also wanted me to get up on stage and have a fight with him because the day before he'd pushed my friend because she asked him to stop smoking whilst awatching the Meat Puppets.
butthole surfers as well, i think
i also think butlins refused to ever let monotonix play there, though pontins might not care / know what to expect...
Monotonix were at Pavement ATP
Monotonix have played twice.
The first show ended with them being carried out of the venue on top of drums and a huge crowd chanting along outside, and the Butlins security going nuts.
Butlins refused to let them play again, but ATP convinced them to let them play, but Butlins said that could only happen if the crowd were sat down with the band sat in the middle of them (or something, I can't remember), either way it ended in farce.
the second time
they lied and said they were going to play an acoustic set.
that was it
They broke* into a bunch of people's chalets one morning
including mine. Luckily one of my housemates woke up as they were drinking our bourbon and ordered them out.
* pretty sure the door was left open to ours.
They sat and had a drink with us...
...then wandered off and started kicking people's chalet doors pretty hard.
Wouldn't be surprised if they kicked one or two in/open.
They got beaten up by wavves
remember reading in an interview with barry
that they'd been caught by butlins security breaking into other people's chalets, completely trashing them and then nicking stuff.
assuming that's true, i probably wouldn't bother having them back either. they're also not *that* great a band.
sorry, pontins security
they played atp vs. pitchfork.
they're shite
What time are Shellac on?
9.00am Sunday
In the Queen Vic.
Will J Mascis be at the ale bar?
Fan-fucking-tastic on The Deerhunter weekend
Their three set are almost worth the ticket price alone.
Why do none of my mates like this stuff :(
Because they like good music.
*proper
Bradford is well into his roots/bluegrass/50s singers just now
I can see them asking Lower Dens. I hope one of Josh's bands (Diet Cola/ SIDS) ends up playing.
im still saying
cm punk would have made the right choice as curator next summer. or stewart lee if they can't get him.
stewart lee
likes a lot of terrible music
...and a lot of great music
but he'd insist on doing one of his stand up shows
where he tells everyone what they shouldn't find funny.
I'm quite excited about both of these announcements
never been to an ATP before, but I reckon one of these at least will be my first.
Hopefully Deerhunter will pick some old dream pop bands (maybe even TVOTR as well 'cos they're a 4AD band as well). Basically I want everything to be 4AD.
by 4ad
are we meaning a reunited original lineup red house painters, cocteau twins, pixies and throwing muses? i'll go to that.
Yes, that's EXACTLY what I mean
I remember reading somewhere
Bradford Cox is a big fan of the Kompakt label, so we might end up with some decent house/techno, he might ask the likes of the Field, Walls, Wolfgang Voigt, Gui Boratto, Michael Mayer... any of those would be great
i'm not that familiar with Bradford Cox
but just by reading this thread I can deduce that he likes everything and will be booking everything for his ATP.
BRADFORD COX FOR PRESIDENT
(If he picks Corrupted, he's got my vote)
so looking at the band's friends etc
Deerhunter are mates with Black Lips, Liars, No Age... have toured with Dan Deacon and War On Drugs... Bradford is a huge fan of Laetitia Sadier, has worked with Panda Bear. wouldn't put it past him to book Verity Susman or even Electrelane...
and if this means anything, here's Bradford Cox's favourite albums of the 00s
20. Grizzly Bear: Yellow House
19. Sonic Youth: Murray Street
18. Breeders: Mountain Battles
17. Dirty Projectors: The Getty Address
16. Jay Reatard: Blood Visions
15. Autechre: Confeld
14. Jim O'Rourke: Insignificance
13. J Dilla: Beat Tapes
12. Black Dice: Beaches & Canyons
11. Casino vs. Japan: Whole Numbers Play the Basics
10. Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Fever to Tell
09. Broadcast: HaHa Sound
08. Stereolab: Sound Dust
07. Neil Young: Archives
06. Liars: Drums Not Dead
05. Black Lips: Let It Bloom
04. Animal Collective: Merriweather Post Pavilion
03. Strokes: Is This It
02. Björk: Vespertine
01. Storm & Stress: Under Thunder & Fluorescent Lights
of course, like 6 of those are impossible
wow
grizzly bear is an all too realistic possibility.
any chance of animal collective or would it be too soon?
too big
and expensive
So are there literally zero 2-berth chalets at Camber Sands?
I thought they were on sale for Shellac ATP (if admittedly quick to go)?
Shame, these both have the potential to be interesting. Looking forward to seeing the initial selections.
although I really wish they'd just announce the first 3 or 4 acts before tickets went on sale
just for a small indication of curatorial intent.
yeah I asked ATP
no 2 berths at camber. shame indeed!
That sucks balls
especially if they were doing 2 berths for the shellac atp.
Buy a 4 berth, sell the spare places on the internet, and make some new friends.
I did it for the Jake and Dinos Chapman one many years ago. It was one of my better decisions.
dunno
spending an extra £340 or so and then trying to get strangers to repay me the money for it and then hope they aren't psychos is not my idea of a fun time.
There are 2 DiSers right ^there looking for 2 berths
2+2=4 #jussayin'
They might be psychos too, but I've had pretty good luck.
Cheers for clearing that up
#statingobviousfactsisfun
It sure is!
Easy too.
:-D
just like the december one, this is at exam time :(((
how the fuck does this keep happening? Oh well, at least this is my last set of uni exams ever so it should never happen again.
I heard Bradford Cox like dubstep.
this, ultimately
sounds like a couple of weekends populated mostly by a ton of bands i've never heard or in some cases even heard of. this will be a genuinely excellent way to spend a weekend.
don't go then
i wasn't being
sarcastic. i really mean that it will be an excellent way to spend a weekend - i like seeing new bands. why would you assume that was a snide remark?
because you posted it on DiS
*appluads
response*
Bradford Cox
likes Bradford Cox
I really want to go....
I dont have 3 other mates who want to go, so i am just after a pair o' tickets.
Is anybody buying a chalet with empty spaces in it?
If so, hook me up! Cash waiting etc.....
Such is my desperation, that i am willing to also buy a 4 berth via pre sale, if one of yous lot wire me over half the cash...
PM ME!
Watchdog just described Camber Sands as a 'health hazard'
So I guess we won't see Anne Robinson down the front for Wolf Like Me. Shame.
but the trip advisor reviews are glowing...

I met someone last week who'd been on a regular, holiday type holiday there.
She said it's a shit hole.
But in fairness, it always was.
I imagine they're having a bit of a clean up after the programme last night. But I'm not really bothered. Besides sleeping and having a shower, how much time do you really spend in a chalet?
certainly beats staying in a tent
It was a huge shithole in 2008
still had an amazing time! I think the tackyness adds to it's charm
Also you have drastically different expectations for a festival
people seem to have their mind blown when they find out yet get a bed/shower/kitchen & tv at a festival
boohoo camber is a bit grotty
wish i could watch pavement or whoever from the comfort and cleanliness of burger king like the good old days
I dunno
Watching the silver Jews from there had a certain charm
my link to trip advisor was fairly tongue in cheek btw!
roll on november...and may!
"The main complaint is....
...that they could do better is controlling the guests who think it's a great idea to scream and shout at 2am until 3am". Phew, that's a relief, I don't usually start that shit until at least 4am
The Deerhunter one clashes with Hellfest
Cobblers
So how long does one usually have to wait for some lineup to drop?
I need info!!!
usually a couple of months
First line up
TV ON THE RADIO
SPANK ROCK
EL-P
SAUL WILLIAMS
TINARIWEN
SHABAZZ PALACES
THEE OH SEES
CSS
DANIEL HIGGS (LUNGFISH)
CELEBRATION
TALIBAM!
NORTH AMERICA
+ MANY MANY MORE TBC
DEERHUNTER performing Cryptograms, Microcastle & Halcyon Digest
ATLAS SOUND
PANDA BEAR
AVEY TAREY
ANIMAL COLLECTIVE DJs
PERE UBU
DAN DEACON
TIM GANE
LAETITIA SADIER
NO AGE
BLACK LIPS (officially pardoned by ATP)
2007/8 called. They want their line-up back.
And who could blame them?
What a line-up!
TVOTR has such a good line up
If you take away CSS and hope that Spank Rock only play their older stuff.
TV On The Radio are a much better headliner than Deerhunter, but Deerhunter have picked better acts.
I'll have to wait and see how both line-ups turn out.
Really?
Deerhunter one looks suspiciously predictable. Paw Tracks plus some bands who Deerhunter have played with plus Atlas Sound.
I've never seen Panda Bear or Pere Ubu and I'm not too well acquainted with much of the TVOTR line-up.
Except CSS, Thee Oh Sees and El-P who I'm not too arsed about.
predictable doesnt mean always mean bad.
personally, i think both line-ups are pretty stonking. deerhunter playing cryptograms in full being the obvious highlight for me.
True dat
TVOTR just excites me more - much more variety and some stuff to get down to. And after all the conjecture about what Bradford Cox likes his band's curated lineup seems a bit tame. THUS FAR.
I wonder
if they've actually managed to get much of what Cox has requested yet, 'Animal Collective DJs' in particular has the air of them padding out the list... I imagine his actual wish list would be pretty wacky...
Who are North America?
Is it just Shellac under a pseudonym? ;-D
What's all this "officially pardoned by ATP" business???
Regarding Black Lips
They were banned
As they broke into loads of people's chalets and Barry Hogan said in an interview that they would never be invited back. I guess he changed his mind.
Was that at Minehead, rather than Camber?
Might have been imposed by Butlins, rather than ATP?
was at Camber
Pitchfork ATP
Oh okay
Scrap that.
Ta!
They should pardon Killing Joke and Butthole Surfers 'cause they're both dead good.
Think the TVOTR lineup looks far superior
Both weekends will be great I'm sure. I like how Deerhunter have used one band to pad out 3 acts on their lineup.
Now I'm sad there are no 2/3 berth chalets at Camber Sands.
Balls.
Is there just no such thing there?
That's a blow
nope
I thought there were 3 berth but no.
Annoying cos I'd probably get a 2/3 berth chalet NOW but I'm not really keen / don't have the cash to get a 4 person and then have issues filling the space*.
[*I know generally it's not an issue to fill unused chalet spaces but...............................]
it's ok, most of the 4-berths only accommodate 3 people
yes, i am still pissed off about sleeping on the floor for three days in december because the double sofa bed was about as wide as a javelin
Prefer the TVOTR one as it's more varied
but due to comparative proximities to Primavera, I'm more likely to hit Deerhunter
hahaha guys, look what i posted when we were predicting...
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4415396#r7018516
Well done, but that's the most boring line up someone could have predicted
and Bradford Cox has picked a boring line up so far. Not that the acts are bad at all, just really safe.
MORE ACTS
TVOTR:
DE LA SOUL
DOOM
DOSEONE
DARK DARK DARK
DRAGONS OF ZYNTH
UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA
LONE WOLF & CUB
Deerhunter:
TOM TOM CLUB
RHYS CHATHAM with ONEIDA
WILLIAM BASINSKI performing The Disintegration Loops
JAMES, ROJ & JULIAN (BROADCAST and GHOST BOX)
EX MODELS feat. KID MILLIONS
SAMARA LUBELSKI
BLUES CONTROL with LARAAJI
DJ & SPOKEN WORD from ERIC ISAACSON (Mississippi Records)
TOM TOM CLUB! :D
Ex Models and Basinski is very nice too.
Ergh both times
I've seen De La Soul at ATP (Explosions & MBV) they've been dire.
The Deerhunter line-up is terribly 2006.
I might go though.
TVOTR surely
You don't get much more 2006 than CSS and Spank Rock.
yeh
and that was before Doom got fat. I'm more keen on the Deerhunter line-up now, for Laraaji/Blues Control and Tom Tom Club. Sweet vibes.
William Basinski & Blues Control with Laraaji
best news all year
!!! added to TVOTR weekend
We'll get some of this fun at Primavera Porto
Right...?
why are these always too much money?
Really want to go to Deerhunter
They're actually probably the best value for money festivals in existence
*in the UK
I can't think of any others that provide accommodation, basically
Yeah, but if you book early enough, it's quite easy to get festival tickets,
accommodation and flights to somewhere like Primavera for less than you'd pay for an ATP ticket.
A load of bands than on any other night would play for £7 on the door at Old Blue Last.
Value indeed!
30*7 = £210
yeah, funny that, you tit
40 bands on the bill, usually.
And less we forget the are some that will cost more then £7 to go see
+ accommodation
Stop humoring him
as if anyone would pay £7 to spend time in the Old Blue Last
not even close
The festival is actually really good value as you get accomedation
it'd be fucking terrible if it didn't provide you with that.
Think you're over-rating the accommodation a bit there (at Pontins anyway)
i had an amazing photo of the 'welcome' box in our chalet that I accidentally deleted
it was covered with brown stains and had mouldy tea bags inside
a welcome box?
hark at you with your la-de-da welcome box, sipping your complimentary tea on the veranda
hey I would've sipped the tea
had the teabags not been mouldy
ticket
Got a place going in my chalet, for anybody interested message me.
ticket
The place is for the Deerhunter ATP.
More acts!
TVOTR
DEATH GRIPS
WHY?
ANTIBALAS
LIGHT ASYLUM
BOUQUET
Deerhunter
STEVE REICH & THE LONDON SINFONETTA
ROBYN HITCHCOCK
BLACK DICE
Doseone AND Yoni at the same ATP...
i'm pretty sure Deerhunter guy said he was into old school hip-hop and US punk on his blog
hmm.
I think he's into a lot of things
and changes his mind almost constantly. The time I interviewed him he ranted very angrily about how The Germs and Flipper were better than all British punk bands. But that was in, like, 2008.
was it just me
or did the ATP email about the announcements have a sillier tone then usual?
Not
just you! Still, makes a change.
Deerhunter's line up is great/
it looks like it is shaping up to be the most interesting line up in a while.
Coach to Deerhunter ATP via We Can Go Dutch
http://wecangodutch.com/events/coach-to-all-tomorrows-parties-curated-by-deerhunter/
Wow, this has dropped a long way down the boards...
Doesn’t seem to be the usual pre-ATP excitement round these parts, but TV on the Radio ATP is kicking off tomorrow now. Tomorrow! Anyone going?
Double-checking the site, they haven’t even sold-out 2-berths which I don’t remember happening before.
Still, have been listening to a load of the bands all week and I’m thinking it’s going to be great. Curious to see stage times though. Especially hope Death Grips are playing downstairs.
If anyone’s interested, here’s a link to a cobbled-together “programme” I made to read up on the bands I don't know on the train down:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/140350370/ATP-Programme-TV-on-the-Radio-May-2013
Blatant JAG for my Deerhunter chalet which I still need to sell
Asking price has dropped to £600 but I'll consider offers.
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/festivals/4428169
I'm looking forward to it.
2nd ATP after Jeff Mangum last year. How does Camber Sands compare to Minehead? I've heard it's a bit of a dive.
Not overly familiar with a lot of the line up. Purposely picked TVOTR weekend because I'd seen so many of the Deerhunter bands before, thought this would be a more interesting line up. TVOTR, WHY?, Rain Machine, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, !!! will all be great.
WIll check out your programme, ta!
It’s been a few years since I’ve been so might have improved, but as a site Camber’s grottier, smaller, has fewer food and drink options, and is generally a less pleasant to stay in than Minehead.
But, partly because of that, it’s always been much more fun. If the weather’s good people tend to congregate together on the grass squares between chalets, it’s much more intimate, you bump into people (including the bands) a lot more and personally I find the two music venues onsite much better suited to most of the bands that play. I never make it that far, but the beach is lovely too.
i'm going to tvotr
really looking forward to it!
it will be interesting to see if it's noticeably quieter, bit ominous that they haven't even sold out of the 2 berths.
camber is a bit grottier in the main areas than minehead but it's a lot smaller too which makes it easier to get around. i heard a lot of horror stories before the national atp but it was fine and our chalet was nice and on a par with the ones at minehead. as mentioned above food choices are very limited so stock up before you get there.
Not really 2 berth 2 berths though, are they?
``Whilst we will allocate you the rooms and do our very best to assist you and make your weekend run smoothly, we cannot of course accept responsibility for any mishaps or disagreements involved in sharing with people you don't know.``
The no 2 berth thing was one of the major things stopping me from getting on board with anything Cambercentric.
Oh right
I hadn't realised, that explains it! Does anyone know if all the 6 berths are two bedrooms with one double sofa bed or do they actually have three bedrooms with six actual beds in? Thanks
None of the camber chalets have 3 bedrooms
All one or two bedrooms with sofa. The old sofas had proper pull-out sofa beds but they appear to have been replaced by the leather ones.
thanks
i may take an airbed
i'll give anyone £50 for a ticket inc. bed for TVOTR
stage times have just gone up
http://www.atpfestival.com/newsview/1305091202.php i thought tvotr would be closing it
!!! in the small room at 11:30pm is going to be incrrrredible
dead jealous
What's this Queen Vic closing at 2am bullshit?
I'm going
I'll be the one following Yoni Wolf around
I'm also going.
Line up looks really thin to me so struggling to raise much enthusiasm. Certainly not as good as I hoped - I signed up when tickets went on sale with little more than Thee Oh Sees and Tinariwen on the menu, and additions since then haven't been of the same calibre. This'll be my 20th (ish) ATP and looks to be the weakest line-up since the Slint debacle in 2005(?). Doesn't surprise me there's still plenty of tickets left.
Anyone care to suggest who should be the highlight of the weekend (after Thee Oh Sees, of course) to raise my excitement levels?
there are considerably less bands playing than last december's tap
but i guess they had a much bigger budget for that one.
I think it's the most interesting line-up since the Matt Groening one, personally.
still hope it's going to be great though
i've been really enjoying the mixtape that atp put together for it
Really jealous of everyone going this weekend
Best lineup since Groening for me.
If anyone has a spare for this weekend (ideally going cheap)
I've got a friend who would love to come along
MF Doom...
has cancelled.
oh dear, poor ATP
in a fantasy world maybe Clouddead will fill the gap, but they'll probably just put on a tape of some MF Doom
