Gwen Stefani
99 warp 9- nunk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IQUs7JDw74
pristine synth and goofy breakdown. wanna breakdance.
Is this your own thing, or can anyone play?
i'ma do my thing, but talk about 1982 songs you like
as well by all means.
98 trouble funk- so early in the morning
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjFl_juwVCk
anyone got something to say about go-go? doesn't get more get down than this.
great to read kindness talking about go-go
in yesterdays guardian guide.
played an EU album today
still funky enough.
first one sounding really good.
they made new jack swing too. trendy ol' genres.
97 skyy- won't you be mine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iP1kFJ4ps20
these singers don't quit.
96 swans- sensitive skin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIJX22Lndac
didn't know swans went this far back, but think they get a mention in our band could be your life. the dinosaur jr chapter of that is well funny.
that picture is very disturbing
95 k.i.d.- watch out
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhtFJnyB18U
snapshot of a mutating sound, synthetic drumbeat with the residual disco brass.
94 cocteau twins- blind deaf dumb
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgCoHlIkHcU
trying to work out what that underlying guitar at 1 min 30 reminds me of, maybe y control.
My top 5 of '82
Don't You Want Me - Human League
A Strange Day - the Cure
The Back of Love - Echo & the Bunnymen
White Girl - X
Poison Arrow - ABC
nice one oR,
there was a martin fry abc interview on the radcliffe and maconie show today for the 30th anniversary. easy to listen on iplayer if you want.
don't you want me and white girl were released before '82.
not in the US of Uncle Sam
Don't you want me was released Jan '82
going for
first release in any country for this.
Based solely on what's in my itunes (and assuming all years in there are correct)
I think my top 5 looks like:
1. Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five - New York New York
2. The Stylistics - Hurry Up This Way Again
3. Donald Fagen - I.G.Y.
4. E.M.A.K. - Filmmusik
5. Shriekback - My Spine (Is The Bassline)
Although without the one-song-per-artist rule, The Message would obviously be straight in at #2.
Rest of the top 10 probably consists of The Bangles - The Real World, The Three O'Clock - With a Cantaloupe Girlfriend, Sly Dunbar - River Niger, The Clash - Rock the Casbah (or any of about 4 others off Combat Rock), and something off the Tom Waits & Crystal Gayle album. Maybe.
caught a bit of flash's set at bestival last year,
was alright but too rock-y. maybe that's what you have to do main stage.
A Top 5 based solely on iTunes
The Cure — A Strange Day
Modern English — Melt With You
Yazoo — Only You
The Church — Almost With You
Simple Minds — New Gold Dream (81, 82, 83, 84)
Without the 1 song per artist rule, One Hundred Years would be in there too. Was also going to have The Stranglers — Golden Brown, but just discovered that it was actually 1981. Would probably flesh it out with Slowdive from Siouxsie and a whole bunch of songs like Centrefold by The J. Geils Bands.
Fuck! Completely forgot about New Order — Temptation
has to be no 1 in this
93 chic- i feel your love comin on
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCdDOtU9OCE
think this might be the last great chic song.
the bass is ace in this one
92 esg- dance
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kj99ji3TGCo
scroggins is a good name, sounds like a beano name.
91 rhys chatham- drastic classicism for electric instruments
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntY8q_xDjAU
sounds like something that will finish quickly, they aren't gonna be able to keep this pace up.
good thread
probably won't contribute anything else, but yeah, good thread
I find the early 80s are bone dry for me
My record collection is sparse and so are my mp3s from 81-84 ish, but the stuff I do have from that time is actually all pretty good.
Yeah - a pretty strong, and ecclectic selection so far.
I'll be adding these to my own 82 playlist.
90 Party Fears Two - The Associates
89 dead kennedys - halloween
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kiySknl9zs0
90 patrice rushen- forget me nots
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Amzp7W0RkPA
should have put this in the *SAXOPHONE SOLO* thread too.
89 the psychedelic furs- love my way
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb4JY2mr-_Y
good song to get out of bed to.
86 marvin gaye - sexual feeling
oooh i'm hot just like an oven, i need some lovin'
if this were best opening lines of 1982...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuT1ITUpodg
88 mandre- i'm on your frequency
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXLQe3qxwrs
sound quality is poor here, still love it doe.
STOP GETTING THE NUMBERS WRONG!
next one is 84!
i have 100 songs to count down.
last one was 88, so the next one will be 87.
but there's two 90s and two 89s?
But only one from furryfan
His countdown, innit.
Oh I'm really thick
sorry Furryfan, completely got wrong end of the stick. Furryfan- do continue...
no worries, i should have been clearer.
all good fun.
87 j. griffin- rock attack
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3rBW47dy4c
mmm electro funk.
86 fatback- on the floor
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tow4ZIOVxE
prefer this to the j lo w/ pitbull song of the same name, it seems like every chart song has that crappy trance sound for years now. funk is better.
oops, missed an I...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tow4ZIOIVxE
85 edwin birdsong- she's wrapped too tight (she's a button buster)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bETPYZjuqzI
sounds like one of the dealers in breaking bad after snorting some up- tight, tight, tight.
Here's my top 5 I think
1. The Fall - The Classical
2. Dead Kennedys - Moon Over Marin
3. REM - Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars)
4. Gang Of Four - To Hell With Poverty
5. Devo - Time Out For Fun
enjoy seeing
all your '82 best ofs.
84 gary numan- a dream of siam
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1qVXcvcxWQ
think this is where pino palladino started his recording career. one of the most interesting discographies. liked his stuff with d'angelo, de la soul, badu, bilal, common.
Pino is probably my favorite bassist.
have you heard the rh factor album hard groove?
pino's on there with some cool guests. used to like that, should dig it out again.
Yeah Ive heard it but its been a long while.
I remember liking it at the time. I heard his one from last year was great too, need to check that still.
roy hargrove
is one cool dude.
83 iggy pop- platonic
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCOZsgV-XqA
new-wave iggy, sweet keys here.
82 antena- achilles
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqmTwwaxaa0
saw this labelled electro-samba, a bit shoreditch twat on paper. is actually delightful.
Haven't heard of half these bands, tbh
But your profile, Mr furryfan, has gone way up in my estimation. Don't keep us in suspense. Keep it coming!
it's difficult to go any faster,
with work, life and that.
81 george clinton- atomic dog
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuyS9M8T03A
been sampled on 7 different ice cube tunes, nearly got a full album there.

Blue Orchids - Release
The Gun Club - Carry Home
Orange Juice - Dying Day
The Associates - Party Fears Two
80 freeez- one to one

79 shockabilly- psychotic reaction
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6NiI_pSNqQ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IQBPVj2znY
kind of smooth, kind of tuff.
77 the clash- should i stay or should i go
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqH21LEmfbQ
great piece of song-writing, so simple and punchy.
gonna name
these classic acts, mere pbh?
76 forrrce- keep on dubbin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m4qARvm8xY
some authentic dub leaves me a bit cold, feels joyless. is a winner when alloyed with wacky funk disco here.
One of Francois K's finest moments.
Beautifully weird.
anyone gets the chance to hear fk play out,
do it.
75 carly simon- why
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyXLUvB-QHA
different sound for chic, a bit looser.
74 todd rundgren- chant
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViuTCBorqtk
weird motivational hi-nrg. just be true to your own vision, this is your personal decision. dunno if the superfluous words are meant to be funny.
Great Todd track
That's one Todd album I am not so familiar with. It's not on Spotify, and I've yet to track it down.
73 the salsoul orchestra feat. loleatta holloway- seconds
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dic1vFT9cQc

1 song per act.
70 stone- girl i like the way that you move

Me loves Planet Claire
Was in the 6th grade when debut record came out.
Always wanted to dig into the b-52's
think i might now.
Not '82
but Dance This Mess Around = oneathe best songs ever.
Mesopotamia is a really underrated release. One of their best I think.
You have to make sure you get the version with the David Byrne mixes though, it's sooo much better, I have no idea why they didn't like it.
66 bruce springsteen- state trooper
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmT-jlL8ZiY
think of bruce as slick, but like this rawness. hell of a howl he's got going here.
65 front 242- least inkling
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1xIgdKX-dY
a lot of electroclash from 20 years later sounds like this.

59 the cold crew- rappin christmas
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aA5GpcKrv2o
as my guy went to jump in the sleigh, i saw a black limo come and take it away. i say hey saint nick what is the deal? he said reaganonomics and yes it's for real. you know what they've taken from me? they took my pride and my dignity. they took my reindeer, they took my box.
58 dexys midnight runners- come on eileen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oc-P8oDuS0Q
love the tempo changes in this, so joyous.
hate this song with a passion
no longer able to objectively judge it
it's just the soundtrack to a thousand shit nights out
impressive to polarize opinions
after 30 years.
57 kalyanji anandji- tu kya jane
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Do1NPmZIngU
intense. movie looks hilarious.

53 brian eno- tal coat
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UshqCpk36I
much busier than i'd expect ambient to be, lush.
52 george thorogood and the destroyers- bad to the bone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlwRNCnsbUg
derivative, but carries it off with a lot of swagger.
51 instant funk- why don't you think about me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?=VDH2ibRxQ74
bass is live on this. echoey claps and screaming synth too. woooo.
better have another crack at that...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDH2ibRxQ74
this thread is especially good for the funky numbers
'82 in Detroit...
a young gal I worked with turned me on to Dirty Mind, The Time & more including the radio dj Electrifyin' Mojo. For the next few years (until NWA and gangsta shit) it was nothing but funk & 12" singles. Mojo and his Midnight Funk Association radio show made B52s, Kraftwerk, even Was/Not Was black radio staples.
that is cool.
the first-wave detroit techno guys all name-check mojo.
50 little john and billy boyo- bushmaster connection
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=814pxbm6lqo
not many tunes this old make me screw up face like this. that ray gun noise, sheesh.

Nice to see Visage sneak into the top 50
Though I'm still saying that "Night Train" is the money track!
this thread is awesome
Props FF.
More vids of people in trench coats walking through fog please.
here you go...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAUB7dcUn8o

48 zapp- dance floor
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiuUcUEk3Ck
sexual music. slap, squelch, squeal.
Jesus Christ I love Zapp
and this I'd line of their best. RIP Roger Troutman.
Excellent call.
47 devo- explosions
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZExDd0AeIfY
tight. use of the call and response backing singers is crazy.
46 tony grey and the ozimba messengers- you are the one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8i8XoimFGo
for the dancers, you can step to this. great even with muddy sound quality.

that stutter beat still sound next, the beep too.
44 certain general- holiday of love

sounds effortlessly great, even that mad guitar at the end feels breezy.
43 einsturzende neubauten- rivieradub
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2Nf3RHV2gQ
said the ike yard joint sounded like leftfield phat planet. this one sounds like a harder version of dave clarke's phat planet remix, which is a different thing altogether. brutal.
42 elektrik funk- on a journey (instrumental)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEkIcKx0y24
nice combination of in your face insistent and spaced out.
41 jonzun crew- pack jam

a couple of breaks near the end sound new jack swing-y.
40 the cure- cold
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GzAr70m5fk
down, but sorta euphoric too. deep production.
really?
there are at least three other tracks from Pornography that I'd pick over Cold.
Not that I think it's a bad song — far from it! It's just that One Hundred Years and A Strange Day, in particular, are such fantastic tracks that I don't know how anyone could pass over them.
really.
cold is my favourite on pornography. to each their own, s'ppose.
39 z'ev- wipe out
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDnvfjuiYOA
propulsive and nasty.
38 captain sinbad- wa dat
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OE_K0PKl8s
beautiful minimal weirdness. love how it unfurls, especially the little horn bit.
Nice.
Hoping to see some more Dancehall cuts higher up?
37 chris and cosey- impulse
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTmwby8PL5k

bahahaha
the youtube video
32 depeche mode- leave in silence
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVu6Wihbp4Q
super boyband style singing.
31 willie nelson- always on my mind
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-Xl17B-Z0A
can imagine people finding this schmaltzy.
I don't know...
I think a cover version has to be pretty damn strong to keep company in a list like this. Not sure that Willie's version is doing enough to make it - for me.
No problem with the schmaltz though.
favourite version of the song,
out of the ones i've heard. do like the erlend oye one as well, is very different though.
30 grandmaster flash and the furious five- the message
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4o8TeqKhgY
beat is cold. zonin' to the little drum rolls.
gotta be sub 30 surely!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szIk4h8RfTo
poppin music with a high pitched man.
28 robert wyatt- shipbuilding
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjUkjpJa6bY
great instrumentation here, late night sounds.
Forgot this was 82
Another great call. One of the most beautiful, and poetic antiwar songs ever written.
Are you planning to do another year after this? I'll miss it when it's gone.
glad you're enjoying it,
i'd like to do another, but might need a break.
Cool - well deserved.
If you want to collaborate on another year - let me know. Two hands make light work and all that.
every DiSer who wants in should pick a year
and do a top 100, chronologically from the first year picked
...of course this would never work
aye this song is cracking
(but still think temptation is min of top 3)
27 prince- 1999
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yB5Dh4F7Es
it is on with the intro, pure serotonin.
My high school graduation song!
dunno what that means, but sounds cool.
you got to choose the song for that situation, like a boxer into the ring?
I really hope that's true
Coming out macking
High school is like 9-12 grade in the US. (college/uni? after that)
So I graduated high school in 99 and this was the song they used for all the graduation parties and festivities and such. Basically I have loads of teenage memories attached to it.
26 cybotron- cosmic cars
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOBUqCIXXWY
incredible use of car horn as a musical instrument.
25 john cooper clarke- i wanna be yours
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lupMcHWcKw
end of the pier, waltz type of thing.
where's Jimmy Webb?
still plenty of songs
to go.
24 ozone- funkin on the one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bDQAj7yJzU
like the high-pitched funkin on the one, followed by the manly, shouted FONK.
like to think of myself as a Funky guy
but never heard this.
OOO yeah.
do be do be doo
Some of the little details in this are insane.
Lovin this too.
Like a cross between Zapp and Cameo - and Newcleus.
23 lee van cleef- spot and beat the banker
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZuNDccdX18
monster sound, would love to hear this on stacked stacks.
22 universal robot band- barely breaking even
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DE82nH8MAtQ
sure this could destroy the right dancefloor. smasher, but classy.
21 steel pulse- your house
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRxYg_20oPg
his voice is great, as is the riddim. another one with nice details, listen for when the synth goes on one for a few seconds.
20 les yeux interdits- prison
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAAdiO-64R8
mans voice is stern. keyboards sounds more human than him.
19 soft verdict- invader
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHX-6OnzPWo
would like to hear an mc on this, maybe trim.
Nice
Especially alongside that video.
To be honest thought - it's not really that innovative as a track (maybe if it was a sixties release) - but it does seem reminiscent of the age. Those afternoons playing Berzerk on my mates Atari 2600.
furry - I've said it already - but this thread is amazing work.
Are you gonna spotify this, sartana?
I would
But most of this shit isn't on Spotify! (I've checked).
:(
18 rick james- 69 times
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkYxEii2RtQ

16 eurythmics- sweet dreams
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeMFqkcPYcg
wiki says this came out 4th jan 83, but discogs says 82. i dunno, maybe there was a promo in 82.
15 steve miller band- abracadabra
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QyoRzZrF00
isn't that rowdy, but gets me hyped. is taut.
Tunes + Memories
Quality thread.
‘Tenterhook’ Orange Juice
‘Hurt’ New Order
‘Objection Overruled’ Gregory Isaacs
‘Walking on Sunshine’ Rockers Revenge
‘Faithless’ Scritti Politti
‘Keep On’ D Train
98 is wicked. This could have graced Top 10. Saw them a few years later in Brixton. Blew my mind.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aB6K1lw3t-M
that's very cool to have seen trouble funk,
didn't know they'd toured outside america. apparently they play islington in march.
14 peech boys- don't make me wait
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHF8tXaTIqg

love the gloopy bass. at points the guitar sounds nicely aquatic too, bit like shuggie otis.
11 martin dupont- your passion
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOCgOCLKYSY
so much amazing weirdness in this... the reverb clap, the woman and man teutonic voices, those mmm's, the chilled alarm thing ringing out, synths seem to gel it, wow when the wind instrument thing comes in.
10 quadrant six- body mechanic

euphoric electro. wish this was the chart sound now, instead of crap 90s trance knockoffs.
Top Ten - things are hotting up!
Love this track. I guess 82 was the year of Electro afterall.

what a combo, rollercoaster hi-nrg and gospel-good voice.
6 afrika bambaataa and the soul sonic force- planet rock

famous production, love the back and forth hype vocals too.
5 twilight ritual- webb men

synths are singing. emotional electro.
4 the clean- point that thing somewhere else
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQ8C-ndyFXk
driving and a bit trippy too.
3 gil scott-heron- black history/ the world
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKo83ViBMw
strange not to hear this in any of the gil tributes, being the last track on last album before the lost years and so good. the words, bass, all the instruments actually, that jaw-dropping segue, amazing singing with echo. super production.
i'll have another go-

2 man parrish- hip hop, be bop (don't stop)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tsfJn8YdwQ
feeling all the reverb, there's a quiet bit that doesn't sound a million miles off dub.
Would have been number 1 for me - but can't argue
It's just an astonishing track I think. It came out of Electro, but gives so much more. I think it was of the first electronic dance tracks I can think of that has a warmth. It showed the way, I think.
And christ it still sounds great.
much gold in this thread
