I will be falling asleep to these
Just like the old days.
Then I'll wake up listening to the last four bars of something awesome thinking - what the fuck was that? -
incredible. i was always sort of hoping they would be avilable
but just figured it was never a reasonable thing to happen. great stuff
-
Fantastic!
Cheers for this.

Holy crap this is great
I remember tracking a load down on Soulseek a while ago, ones from the early 80s. His voice sounded weird then, a bit more high pitched and posh. This goes right back to the 60s by the looks of it !
-
Splendid
Used to have tapes (which I've gradually lost over the years) of the shows. Just stumbled across a track I loved (Morocco - New Javelins apparently). This is ace.
Also, if anyone hears a spoken word track about a man fighting a monster on a beach which ends: 'So I dropped to one knee, raised my AK-47 assault rifle and shot him in the head' or a rock-era PJ Harvey-esque band with the singer screaming 'Touche! You know! Come on!' can you let me know whereabouts they are. Late 90s I think. Ta. -
I really hope these don't disappear.
I missed this man's voice.
-
This is so great.
I never got to listen to his shows before he died. Did Radio 1 actually used to be this good?
-
It wasn't all this good,
but not all of the shows were presented by people with rotating glitter balls where their brains should be.
-
these are fucking brilliant, aren't they?
I forgot how much I missed this show :-(
-
Nice!
I'm starting with the New Order special.
-
the idea goes that nobody liked everything he played
I liked most of it, so whatevs.
but it was just so great hearing him talk. sometimes you'd look forward to a song ending just to hear what he had to say. also, it was ace when he made mistakes :D.
:(
-
some should edit this
down to just the bits of him talking about Fall records.
Icarus-Smicarus this'd this -
how many days a week was he on Radio 1?
I have it in my head that it was every night but I'm not sure.
-
depends when
by the end it was 3 or 4 days a week? For a while he was just on sautrday afternoons. Or am i just making this up?
-
he liked it all
he always maintained that if he didn't like something, it was his problem.
from listening to him, my natural craving for new, interesting music grew, and when faced with something I didn't get, I tried really hard to get it, because he liked it and I trusted him.
this continued outside of listening to Peel - obviously shit cynical money-driven stuff aside - and I ultimately found myself listening to anything, regardless of genre. and if I like something, I really like something.
I figure he had a similar path; challenging himself constantly and finding that as he did, his capacity to appreciate and love music grew.
-
at the end
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 23:00 to 01:00.
-
sometimes things he didn't like
got into the festive 50 & he always used to say he didn't like it, but you lot do, or you lot voted for it for some reason, or stuff like that
-
saddest drive home ever
was the day that he died
traffic jam that day so got to listen to all the tributes on the way home -
I know that!
Festive Fifty aside...
-
this will help
with saving money in coming months? coming out? no, im staying in listening to john peel. just like the good old days. *reminiscence weep*
-
He was definitely on Saturday afternoons in the mid-90s
Imagine music like that being played on daytime weekend Radio 1 now!
-
he always played what he liked
here's the clip of him playing Wham and having no shame in it
-
Nice...
glad someone's done this. I was in the audience for 148.
-
I think
he played stuff that he thought was interesting and worth listening to. That's not quite the same as liking something.
One of the things that set him apart from other DJs is that he never preached - he never tried to educate his listeners, or demand they liked certain bands. A lot of DJs now say "This band is really good, you will love them and they're going to be huge and you should all be buying the record". There's an ego associated with telling someone something is good ("I have good taste") and he never did that. He'd just occasionally say "what a great record" or something like that. And yet he broke so many bands.
I certainly can't see him ever pretending to be hip, that's for sure!
-
was record shopping next to peel at a stall once,
that's probably gonna be a decent place for buying records.
-
I switched straight to Radio 1 when I found out
It made me realise how crap everyone else really is. DJ bloody Spoony had to do a slot, he really didn't have a clue what to do or say. "Here's another shit R&B song" most likely.
-
Just listening to the 11/02/1980 show right now...
He's just played a Martha & The Muffins album track and he's mentioned how "some say that Richard Branson's now worth 15 million pounds" :D
-
God no, if anything it was even worse then
Daytime Radio 1 in the 1980s was a hideous, hideous thing
-
well, I can imagine
1) the fact Soundcloud pays no royalties, will irk some labels/acts on there.
2) the fact the BBC/TV license payer technically owns the shows will be a problem (tho they seem to be more accepting of YouTube 'piracy' and all that these days)
3) someone somewhere probably wants to monetize these at some point in the future...Pale-eyedBadger and andyvine this'd this -
which is really incredible
I struggle with filling one hour of radio with good stuff a week, let alone six.
(it also means these shows represent a tiny fraction of his output!)
-
puhlease yes
hope these don't get taken down straight away
-
for several years prior to and a few years after his death, evenings were great
gone to shit since, Benji B aside.
-
he appreciated - liked - it all
if he thought something was worthwhile, that meant he liked it to some degree.
totally agree on the latter point; I loved that about him. no pushiness. even if he loved something, it was always riddled with self-deprecation.
seriously, fuck the whole excessive, aggrandising hype presenting and the 'trust us' shit Radio 1 has had going on in recent years. lies. it's gotten progressively less trustworthy/more compromised by trying to keep with 'key youth demographics'.
-
I was numb, completely in shock for days
the radio was my best friend. and he was like a surrogate dad/cool uncle. it was devastating.
I can remember hearing the news announced by Colin and Edith. felt like the floor had collapsed beneath me.
-
this is great
now if someone in canada would do the same with CBC's David Wisdom. He was most certainly a student of Peelie.
-
I posted the link to the Peel stuff to an e-mail list I'm on
& it prompted someone else to mention they needed an online way to post the Nightlines stuff they had, so you might get your wish.
-
already discovered like 63 bands from these.
the best there's ever been.

So people here are downloading these just in case right?
I grabbed all the pre-90's ones, but bandwidth has taken a real hammering just recently, so I could do with waiting to get the rest. Be nice to know I might be able to get any I'm missing from someone here if they do get taken down.
-
Yeah, I didn't think of that
might get on it now actually.
-
I grabbed a program that does batch downloads from Soundcloud
There's a few around, just do a search.
_TheBeautifulOnes_ this'd this -
I've filled pages of a notepad already
of records I need to check out. I never do this listening to any of the R1 shows normally.
-
For anybody wanting tracklistings
I managed to locate tracklistings for the 2002, 2003, 2002 shows on the old keeping it peel site http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/johnpeel/tracklistings/ & 92-2001 shows here http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/Lorcan's_Tracklistings_Archive
-
In the early 80s...
...he was on 10 - 12, Mon to Thurs. I think Tommy Vance had the Friday night slot..
-
ah shit!
I only downloaded 50!
-
If these should go down, all of the later shows (from when they appeared on-line, on 'Listen Again' etc) can be found on various sites.
Over the past year or so, I've been listening to shows from 2001 - 2004 again and thoroughly enjoying them. Particularly interesting how my own tastes have changed in the 10 years since. It's a real pleasure to hear old timey country and delta blues records now, rather than leaving the room to make a cup of tea and hoping the next tune is by Sodastream.
And the happy hardcore records sound even more fun with age. Brilliant stuff. Blimey, even Biffy Clyro did an acceptable Peel session back then.
-
Bastard!
I was only on ten when the download stopped. I refreshed to see what the crack was and it'd gone down to 0. Swines. Yesterday I was full of dreams of having a nice chunk of my hard drive heaving with peel action. Gutted.
-
Knew it would happen eventually. Fuck.
I hope someone managed to download them all and will zip/rar them.
-
guys, still working on the search
http://soundcloud.com/search?q[fulltext]=John%20Peel%20Show%20%2BdB
gonna get home and download all of these
-
fishwho this'd this
-
Ahhhhh, checked archive.org
but didn't think of Google cache. Had tried Soundcloud search, but I guess picking more than "Peel" & checking more than one page of results might have been an idea. That & spending more time on it than doing Work today.
-
is anyone else downloading these?
trying to get as many as i can at the mo
-
Yeah I've got the ones I didn't get yesterday queued up
but that's 300 odd of them. Will leave it going till I've got them all, the cache clears or my internet gets cut off :)
-
Yes!
downloading a few more. Thanks for finding them again,.
-
great
10 singles in alphabetical order, skill testing questions, that special brand of canadian pop (rheostatics, smugglers, sloan, cub, zumpano etc) - I'm ready.
-
I had no problem this morning listening to the shows on my Iphone via Soundcloud
I listened to SFA session from around 2001
Started my day quite well
-
checking this morning
i've got around 270, will crack on when i finish work.
-
Hopefully I have them all by now
Was onto the final 40 when I left for work this morning.
-
I think they've now disappeared...
...nabbed a few more this morning but unable to get any more now. Managed to get about 70 of them before they disappeared. Good stuff!
-
Would the best idea be...
To gather up all d/l shows then upload them onto a torrent site?
-
I started downloading, got about 45
Can we zip them and upload them between us. We cant let these disappear!
-
damn
not working for me. I would love them all but in particular I am after 2004/06/22 if anyone has that one? He read out my shoutout whilst we were having a BBQ at Glasto!
-
That link was given above
Sometime this morning the actual files it links to were cleared out of the cache.
-
I got that one, PM me & I can send it
Got most of them, but lot of weird discrepancies, for instance there appear to be 2 for 2003.12.11 & I only have one, so I've a horrible feeling one overwrote the other. I didn't get the mum, which admittedly didn't seem to have a download option, although sure I got another one that didn't have that. Also a bunch of the 90's ones I got yesterday came out zero length (last 2 from '90, all '91-'92, 1st 5 from '93). Got 424 altogether, probably can't spare the bandwidth to put them anywhere till next month though, it's 43+ GB altogether!
-
been too busy to download
over the last couple of days. Can anyone hook me up with a zip with a stack of them? Would be much appreciated.
-
good stuff poprivet
I'll pm you at some point to get a handful of them.
the torrent idea is also good.
-
Keep It Peel
Only managed a few. Would dearly love to get them all.
-
I've uploaded 2, 2 hour sets to zippyshare.
They were uploaded "privately" so should be invisible except to you lot. It's all I got but I'm happy to share. They are random sets but seeing as they feature Johns dulcet tones and his usual mix of genres I think they are pretty representative of his "style" that we all love :-

Hope you enjoy (Yes, I registered here just to share :)
-
Oh man
I managed to pick out a date that I'm pretty sure includes a Fall session and now I find they don't fucking work anymore.
-
One of those was one I was missing, thanks
Vian asked me for a couple, 2012.06.22 & 23, here's a link:

Did anybody download 11.07.2002 or 18.07.2002
I didn;t have time to download these shows when I listened the other night and now they have been removed. The Google Cache site isn't working for me either.
-
Noooooo
I got excited there and then burst like a balloon
-
I found a 3 hour "Elastica" set
That I forgot I'd downloaded today http://peel.wikia.com/wiki/11_December_1993 Cracking show... If I can find somewhere to upload it (it's 220MB) I will
-
OK, I'm currently uploading 4.5GB worth of 2004 shows
to go with those on my link above. Will probably finish overnight, then I'll leave them up for a week, before doing the other half of 2004.
-
littlebirds and Spicer this'd this
-
Left these to download at home today
Thanks very much!
-
Next lot up there now
Took longer than expected.
Remainder of 2004, plus start of 2003.
If anyone notices any from 2004, that they have, that I'm missing, would appreciate an upload.
-
Did anyone get 18/08/03
Or was it even available? Just doing a stock take of what I picked up and would love to have this one. Cracking session - including a blinding cover of Temptation - from Barcelona Pavilion that I still remember 9+years later.
Swapsies available, PM me if necessary.
-
Don't think that one was there
I got a list, but not sure if it's 100% accurate. Certainly don't have that one amongst those I got.
-
Ah well, looks like I'll have to live with the memories.
That was a cover of temptation by New Order by the way. Not Heaven 17, or even God Machine. but I'm sure they would have been equally memorable if covered.
-
Just started rest of 2003 & 1st half of 2002 uploading
Am going to be away for a while, so check back on Wed & it should have finished. Those will be up till I get back & I post here.
-
OK, I'm back
All but the last few of 2002 are up now, & will be there till some time on Monday.
-
That lot uploaded quicker than usual actually
Think the exercise is doing it good.
-
Final few from 2001, plus 1997 - 2000 there now
We're into pre-Listen Again territory now, so it's not almost every night now. Think I've got about 2 more upload batches to go then I'll be done.
-
You are
a hero.
-
All the remaining 90's ones, 90-96, there now
I know I'm missing a chunk of these, as I got 22 with a zero filesize from this period for some reason, so if you have any from 90-96 you don't see here *please* upload them somewhere, or it might be possible to use my Google Drive in some way after the next, final, batch next week.
-
Final batch
1960's - 80's. I'll leave them up till Xmas.

Mummy Says I'm Special
John Peel
amazing
now i just need to buy back my Nissan Sunny and get a load of hash and hot box it with my mates whilst listening to these.
