New talented band: Churches
Churches are a Scottish electronic pop band formed last year.
The band members are:
- Lauren Mayberry (vocals)
- Martin Doherty (synths)
- Iain Cook (synths).
So far they released just one song, "Lies": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUvJBD9MVI4
But what a song!

Its nice to have a scottish female vocalist who keeps her accent while singing
Most adopt that faux warbling shit. This kinda sounds like a scottish Ellie Goulding.
-
The song is really catchy. The more you play it, the more you like it.
I like also the subtle industrial sounds.
-
NME seems to like them a lot
[magazine scan with a short review of their second show]
The other songs seems to be also great.
-
Saw them last night.
They were great.

Yeah just listened to this about 7 times in a row.
It's the LA SUXXX of 2012!
-
just so you know
this is half of areogramme/unwinding hours/twilight sad
having been at their first (and still only, i think) glasgow show this is all a bit mental, me and Lauren have lived in the same flat!

Love the new song too
I just fucking love her voice I think, music's cool too though.
-
I have said it before
and I'll say it again;
Enough with the single pluralised word band names. Particularly geographical ones.
Fucking Churches. Not as good as Cathedrals.
eltham this'd this -
Neat.
Really neat!
-
liking this more with every listen
but then it does sound like Paramore dunked in the lighter side of Crystal Castles
-
yeah, this I like
she has such a good accent, and the beat sounds massive
-
Like it
Quite similar to Purity Ring, that's not a bad thing though is it?
-
It's a good track
I'd be pleasantly surprised if they can carry this formula through to a strong album. Dave ^there mentioned Purity Ring, and I can see the similarity for sure, but this is more well worn electro pop to me, and even Purity Ring suffered a little bit on their album from being one trick ponies.
Still, be happy to be proved wrong.

I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW GOOD THE NEW SINGLE IS IS
I THINK I NEED A LIE DOWN

It reminds me of Heartbeats by The Knife
Esp. the rhythm section. Amazing song.
-
New song: 'The Mother We Share' - The Knife reference?
Seems pretty likely, given their sound.
-
Ah I see
But I of course mean 'We Share Our Mother's Health' in particular.
-
Yes. But that "v" tend to make me pronounce it as "v" instead "u".
I think it's not too late to come with an entirely new band name if Churches (with "u") is gone...
-
This "angel miike guy" did an awful video for 'The Mother We Share'
I really hope this will not be the official video.
-
oh so he just makes videos then?
didn't know if he was a label boss or summat
-
In the description of the video:
"VIDEO EDIT BY *_* (ttp://www.facebook.com/angelmiike)"
PS: he ate a "h"...
-
Definitely the best new band I've heard this year.
deep-blue this'd this -
There's nothing really original about them is there
maybe that's not what you're looking for idk. It seems strange to me to hold something in such high esteem that treads a path that's already so well worn, without bringing much else in. I guess they've got plenty of time to figure that out though, i loved the purity ring album, which is an example of people getting this sort of thing right.
Sorry to be a killjoy

Pretty much love both these songs now
and maybe the lead singer a bit after watching that video so many times.
Good stuff.
-
Subthread: I love hearing pop vixens say 'fuck'
Jenny Lewis does it in several Rilo Kiley songs and it's always the sexiest thing ever.
Another recent example: Phantogram - 'Don't Move'
moar plz
-
Emily Haines of Metric
- at the beginning of "Artificial Nocturne": "I'm just as fucked up as they say / I can't fake the daytime".
- "Satellite Mind": "Flashback of a feeling, sixth sense of a call / And heard you fuck through the wall, I heard you fuck"
- "Crowd Surf a Cliff": "It's not for a fuck, or a kiss / Rather give the world away than wake up lonely / Everywhere and every way I see you with me / Crowd surf off a cliff".

OMG – someone has finally said a bad word against Chruches!?!
The problem I have with Churches is the same sad story that has ruined chances many talented unsigned Scottish Bands that have struggled from the sidelines which is unbiased favouritism from those privileged to be “connected”
IMO it’s not the second coming that everyone in Glasgow or Blogburn are building them up to be. It’s a band that played in a very heavy style (I’m a massive gramme fan) to jumping on the electro synth bandwagon to appease the Murdoch & Kapranos tastemakers of Glasgow
I wouldn’t have a problem with Churches if other promising unsigned bands in Scotland got the same amount nationwide praise / admiration. It just seems that no other new bands in Scotland exist except Churches - who have well known contacts around Glasgow and chummy with the right people.
At the end of the day I know the White Knights of this thread will tell me that “you know nothing“ and whatever but spare a thought for those hard working bands in Scotland who deserve the same amount of press/live reviews as Churches have unfairly gotten in the space of 4 months.

I'm looking forward to seeing them support Passion Pit.
I'll probably develop diabetes at that gig.
-
I can't work out for sure whether you just need to 'buy' the free tickets
and that ensures you entry, or it's going to be first come first serve too... I got a bunch for me and pals anyway.
-
Yeah I assume it'll be first come first serve with tickets
I've never been to the venue so have no idea how big it is, hopefully shouldn't be too much of an issue.
-
Possibly pointing out the obvious
but the v in the name is just a stylised u, the same as Edinburgh Council use. They're still Churches on Facebook.
-
I read an interview (possibly with the Observer?)
where they said they changed it just to make it easier to Google them. Makes sense.
-
Ah cool, that would make sense.
It's just that I've heard people talking about their stupid unpronounceable name before.
-
Oh right yeah
With you on that one, it's clearly just pronounced Churches!
littlebirds this'd this -
They're awesome live!
Here is a HD video with two songs performed live: "The Mother We Share" & "Lies" (near the end): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hu1Q7UNiq6Y

Glasgow talent
Glasgow seems to be on the up just now. Chvrches and Holy Esque are great. From what I heard last night both are on the verge of deals with Warner and HE invited to play SXSW next year.

She always looks so nervous on stage!
I want to wrap her up in a blanket and bring her tea and Marmite on toast.
OH GOD I'M OLD
-
she's actually a year older than me
and i'm 24.
-
Thanks!
Cannot wait
-
nah, I had sort of the same thought (substituting American comfort foods for British staples). I'm always surprised to see somebody be nervous on stage when they clearly have talent and an attentive audience.
-
They performed live at BBC Radio 1
So far, there's one video for "The Mother We Share" live: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pD9LQ73QHwE
-
Doors open at 8pm
Miaow Miaow supporting.
That's about all I know.....can't wait. -
and do those tickets guarantee entry?
...bugger it i'll just call electrowerkz tomorrow.
-
i very much doubt it.
I'm going early.
Miaow Miaow is ace anyway. -

The Twilight Sad
Aereogramme
Before I saw who posted it I assumed this was a JAG
But in actual fact, cheers, this is pretty great. I shall be playing this a lot over the next few days.
