Me too to be honest...
But I'm probably going to go... Not been to an ATP festival since Vs the Fans 2 and that was great. Pretty sure this will have a line up that's is right up my street.
-
Whilst I have no desire to see shellac again
They will pick a good line up, I look back at the 2003(?) line up and all the bands I didn't bother seeing and weep.
-
interesting
Guess the smaller capcaity will let them put more events on.
Wonder if May ATPs will be coming back?

Hmm
I think albini checking this out.

Fingers crossed for this being a big Touch And Go love in

I was hoping their 'big announcement' this morning was going to be some extra names for the National one
I suppose this is bigger news though, for Shellac fans anyway.
-
orangejuice this'd this
-
Fuck the haterz
Shellac curated the best ATP I've ever been to and the most fun and varied in line up (barring the one where multiple folks curated it obvs). Therefore I'M ALL IN.
One note though, didn't ATP say there was DEFINITELY only one NBXMAS ATP this year about a week back? That kinda sucks if so...
silverfoxqpr this'd this -
Hope so
I assume most people would much rather go in May.
-
You joke, but it may have been past feedback that encouraged options like that
-
Yep, I'm in. The 2002 remains to this day the best ATP ever.
Thank christ I didn't get National tickets. Love ATP but they've really got to get on top of their PR. They did indeed day definitely only the 1 event this year.
-
Camber sands pontins
It's spiritual home
-
Anyhow, I think being back at Camber will be great for ATP
If, as I'm presuming, the redone site still has the chalet's in close proximity and is of similar size?
It just allows far more movement between the stages, interaction between groups and there isn't the pressure on having to get HUGE bands to fill massive stages. The line ups always seemed better balanced at Camber and less likely to be 3/4 empty rooms.
I will miss the swimming pool though - unless that's been revamped too?
-
They did say there would only be one
but that was before they moved the festival to a much smaller and presumably cheaper venue. So they probably decided they could afford to do another one.
-
I kind of think the drop in capacity going to camber makes it ok
-
And allowing swaps, no one is disadvantaged really
-
Yeah just read that
Fair nuff then, eh? (Unless you've booked travel / time off work already / etc etc)
-
It feels fun as a nostalgia thing for ATPs past
whereas if this had been announced for Minehead I'd probably have just wanted them all to fuck off.
I do have a slight feeling of them chancing it - WAHEY, WE SOLD OUT THE NATIONAL ATP - LET'S KEEP ANNOUNCING MORE
-
aye
but as long as ATP have such a monopoly on these type of events (and in booking certain bands) it's going to happen isn't it?
i guess with the capacity in essence halving for the national ATP it makes sense to do a second one. -
ATP did state
that Pontins offered them another weekend, so their statement about only doing one event this year may well have been true at the time. Anyways, this has got to be good news.
-
best.
news.
-
ATP really is just a parody of itself, isn't it?
You know that there's something wrong when a festival curated by fucking BELLE & SEBASTIAN is the most interesting and unusual line up at an ATP for the last 7 years or so.
-
Where's the obligatory CG post?
This seems like a daft joke, but I think that being at Camber Sands and offering swaps from the other weekend makes it fair. Look forward to seeing how the lineup pans out actually, as I haven't been to an ATP fest since Dec 2010 and would like to go but the National one was looking a little dull to me.
-
Even though
the Belle & Sebastian one was easily the least interesting and unusual line up o the laswt 7 years or so?
-
sorry for being a miserable bastard
but yeah, the b&s line up was the only original ATP line up in years... this is not a comment on whether or not i thought that line up was any good, by the way (it wasn't really my thing) but the fact remains that SO MANY ATPs just rely on indie rock and faux-avant guarde stuff ("omg they're playing 20 drumkits at once, COOL!")
ATP is a great concept, but it's just TOO genre specific. Though I guess that a lot of people on here really love that genre, so it isn't a problem!
-
The Belle & Sebastian one was almost entirely indie rock (or indie pop or whatever) though?
-
You could argue...
... that ATPs concept is about being genre specific....
-
Did you see the five drummer / loads of guitarists thing though
it was the best thing i've ever seen/heard. It was really not about how cool it was. It was just brilliant.
Rhymenocerous this'd this -
Huh?
Patton/Melvins ATP had pretty much every kind of music imaginable.
DaddyorChips and joeymahone this'd this -
and what on earth is faux avant-guarde?
Christ on a bike. what DO you want to see?
this'd this -
That genre being
'No Black People'.
Cementimental this'd this -
not totally, also it wasn't US indie rock, it was mainly Scottish stuff that would never be at a normal ATP
but it's kinda my point, the line up wasn't actually "interesting and usual", but compared to other ATPs it was!! I'm not saying the Bowlie ATP was great, I'm saying other ATPs should be more interesting.
-
pretty psyched for this
will probably go, depends how supersonic shapes up though i guess.
have the h8rz actually been to other festivals? atp is brill.
-
I think this is awesome news
I'm probably going to go.
-
But what about the Godspeed one?
Which had Keiji Haino and Weird Al Yankovic playing different stages at the same time, and a noise musician that blindfolded his audience, and a band doing an improvised 10 hour set, and DJ Shitmat and Neurosis and Wolves in the Throne Room and folk singers like Josephine Foster and Marissa Nadler and Jazz like Borbetomagus and Matana Roberts.
joeymahone and Cementimental this'd this -
Radiohead
obviously.
-
yeah well your record label sounds shit
^ it's nice being pointlessly acerbic sometimes, huh?
-
I don't even know!
I'm just in a bad mood. Would like some drone/ambient/sound art stuff, something a bit more serious, less sensationalist.
-
so you want more faux avant-garde?
Make your mind up damnit!
raindrenchedweekend this'd this -
So, like there was at the last Nightmare?
And the Portishead one. And the Mike Patton one. And some others that I didn't go to.
-
yeah, but it's all kind of underpinned by traditional indie stuff
i want someone REALLY unique to curate it.
-
it had a good line up in some respects
but it was still headed by a traditional ATP post rock band..
-
...Jake & Dinos Chapman? Vincent Gallo? Autechre? Portishead?
Actually, just forget it.
-
i'm just been annoying, i'm sorry
I basically want to curate an ATP myself
Cementimental this'd this -
Why is that an issue?
They curated a weekend of eclectic music, did they not?
joeymahone this'd this -
But they were the only traditional ATP band there, apart from Deerhoof. Who still aren't similar to them musically at all.
joeymahone this'd this -
Portishead are part of traditional indie though
typical Pitchfork fare. I mean i want it to be CURATED by someone who isn't like that.

MOGWAI TO CURATE THE CURATORS AT THIS YEAR'S ATP FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE
ATP are pleased to announce that the legendary Scottish post-rockers will be picking three artists to curate each day of this year's I'll Be Your Mirror: Royal Wooton Bassett, which will take place across Royal Wooton Bassett Village Hall, Royal Wooton Basset Community Theatre and local public house The Queen’s Arse and Firkin.
Stuart Braithwaite from the band says: 'aye, we were wee fucking weans back when we first started doing this pish and it's a great wee opportunity to pick some of the coonts with the best taste in music we know'
Mogwai's first pick is Shellac UK. This six piece function band from Bridlington will be recreating all of your favourite family hits from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and (20)10s during their headline set on the Friday of the festival. As well as playing they will be curating the line-up for the day. We are currently unable to announce any bands but expect the best reformed family friendly bands from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and (20)10s.

Are there like four 2-berth chalets at Camber Sands or something?
Guess I'm not going to this.
-
Not promising
Have done the 6 person thing at Camber, but did prefer the simpler life of a 2 berth, where you don't have to worry about chaletmates staging a 5am drunken sing-a-long (or a 3pm drunken sing-a-long the next day when you've snuck back to the chalet in the afternoon to steal a few zzzz's due to no sleep the night before).

I got one

Shellac have already curated. In 2003.
I thought the point was to get someone different each time.
This is an ATP regression. Can you not see that?
-
never trust Charalambides fans
that thread suggests the opposite to what you're suggesting though
-
to be fair there has been nearly a decade of music since then
and I imagine they are the kind of people that seek out new things, the 2002 one has an amazing line up, in hindsight, I didnt think much of it at the time because I hadnt heard of many, so chances are they will turn up some great new music that in years to come will be looked back on as great if not know very well at the time

Not sure I'd welcome Thurston or the same curator again now. Must have been caught up in the post ATP 2006 noise fest haze...

It's just not something I wish to see ATP doing really. Keep it fresh!

Surprised not to see Dirty Three in the announcement
Given that ATP have them playing Shepherds Bush two days before.
Are they just waiting until they've sold a few more tickets of their tour before adding them to the bill?
-
Just listening to Red Fang now
They sound JUSt like QOTSA. More tempted now.
-
thinking.....
about how sometimes the best bands at past ATPs have been the bands we weren't aware of before we went........... or something (still 20 bands left to announce right?)
vamos this'd this -
I'm a plane! I'm a plane!
Look at me!
-
Yup still 20 more to go
I know it's Shellac and isn't to be expected but could do with a couple of bands that don't have a guitar, at least predominantly
-
Perhaps
Although here are four reasons I think they already have:
1. The Dirty Three tour is perfectly timed to lead up to an ATP performance (and the London show is promoted by Willwal)
2. The tour was announced after the Shellac ATP announcement so I'd guess that they arranged the tour after being booked for ATP.
3. Bands often ask festivals to hold back on announcing their involvement for a specified period to help ticket sales for their own shows.
3. Steve Albini recorded the Dirty Three album Ocean Songs. -
+
they just played a bunch of European dates together
-
I reckon Drdinnermint
Was being sarky.
-
Now Frank Ocean is out the closest
It's impossible to find their music obnoxious or offensive. C'mon, they've got friends who are gay!
Guaranteed addition to the line up.
-
Oh That Drdinnermint...
although can't see Dirty Three playing it. Not been asked innit.
-
erm...
Helen Money and Bear Claw?
-
On reflection and a couple listens more on the playlist I don't feel the line up is as one dimesional as I first thought
The Ex & Brass Unbound now becoming one of the bands I'm really looking forward to based on their live videos.
-
sorry, i was being a bit pedantic.
I saw The Ex and Brass Unbound on their original UK tour in early 2010 and it was one of the best shows i've ever seen. The Ex are pretty great anyways but the addition of the brass stuff was just perfect for them. The sound was huge and it was so much fun. It's definitely going to be one of the main highlights of the weekend.
skifVP this'd this -
The Bear Claw that are playing isn't the one that is on spotify
The Bear Claw that are playing just sound pretty much like Shellac or something.
-
albini hates british bands apparently
http://www.electricalaudio.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=45427&start=180
honestly i can hardly even be arsed to read it. there might be something interesting in there i suppose
-
i'm still working through it slowly
but good
-
They do sound like Shellac
but they have two bassists and a drummer - no actual guitars to my knowledge. I'm quite sure this wasn't what Yesiamaduck was after though. I thought there was plenty of variety at their 2002 ATP and i'm sure the same will ultimately be true this time around. I reckon there's plenty of acoustic/classically leaning stuff to be added.
-
This will be my first ever ATP.
A couple of questions...
1) Will there be DJ's after the bands? Do they play slightly more dancey/electronica music? Because whilst I obviously love guitar-orientated music I do have quite catholic tastes (I spend a lot of time listening to grime/house/techno blah blah blah). I do like to have a little rave now and again.
2) How many people will be staying at Camber Sands over the weekend? Does it feel busy or will it all be quite spread out?
-
1. Yes. Depending on how many rooms they have running late,
you'll get a mixture of stuff.
2. Think the capacity is about 2,800. It's a very compact site, much more so than Butlins (which had a capacity of about 6,000), and it always feels lively. -
Although they've
got better recently, ATP always seemed to have ironic party classics or cool indie disco djs after dark. Albini doesn't seem to be the kind of guy to choose Spinn & Rashad or Theo Parrish.
-
Hey, ja
1. The DJs tend to play an eclectic choice of tunes, you get a lot of pop classics, trademark dance numbers, far out experimental stuff and the standard indie classics as well as hot numbers from the moment.
2) Camber Sands feels incredibly lively, Butlins never did but basically the entire site will be in the same area during the night time & the club gets an awesome atmosphere at night (again something Butlins lacked) if it's lively atmos you're looking for then count your lucky stars that it's at Camber as opposed to Butlins
-
Albini should get Beachbuggy to reform and play

To celebrate a return to the festival's original home of Pontins Camber Sands Holiday Camp; All Tomorrow's Parties recently announced a Nightmare Before Christmas festival event curated by SHELLAC OF NORTH AMERICA to help celebrate their 20th anniversary as a band. ATP will return to the festival's spiritual birthplace where Shellac headline & curate the 35 band bill playing across the event on the venue's excellent indoor stages featuring award winning sound, with DJs until late, Cinema and much more.
Only a limited amount of Four and Six Berth Apartments are still available at this point. The second group of fantastic artists for the event are announced today.
Steve Albini of Shellac: "The members of Shellac are inviting more of our favorite bands to ATP. Some, like Melt Banana and Uzeda, are old friends and comrades. Wire/Melt Banana clash
think Melt Banana ultimately win it for me, especially as they're on the smaller stage
SarcasticFringehead this'd this -
Well, soon
Someone's still filling it in
-
haha err
two of my party, who are working on friday til like 2 and then need to go home sunday night, will miss both of Shellac's sets? Isn't this a little silly, people always have to come late and leave early?
-
And as great as it is to have Melt Banana play the intimate stage
it's kind of a baffling arrangement, as far as I'm aware this band is one of the more popular on the entire line up, and to have them play such a small room is asking for problems. I might be wrong though! And I guess it helps they clash with Wire who are really quite popular indeed.
-
I forgot Melt-Banana were even playing
but they are. hooray!
-
I was going to say
that's where it used to be.
I remember seeing Autechre curate one there and it's so far removed from that these days it's more like an indie rock festival. -
saw Scrawl and Shannon Wright double header in London last night
Scrawl were very good but Shannon Wright was the revelation for me. Wild, desperate, cool as fuck and the kind of bludgeoning power that will work for the Albini crowd. Don't miss.
