Bloc 2012
New venue looks awesome. London Pleasure Gardens, on the docks. A twisted Dystopian nightmare of sorts. Lots of neat ideas floating around, made by the Shangri-La Glastonbury folk.
Line-up out Feb 1st. Heard bits and pieces, very nice.

All Tomorrow's Parties
The End Of The World
Oh!
That looks interesting. Its annoyingly on the same weekend as Freerotation this year though.
Yeah but Johnny Freerotation is about a zillion times better
if you can get freerot tickets there's really no choice in the matter.
why
has this moved venue? has butlins had a spat with more promoters than just ATP then?
could be that they outgrew it
but there's a decent chance Butlins started to get irked by the 6am K hole revellers.
(at Pavement ATP, of course)
Only saw this now
Too late! Sorry Sam.
first round of line-up:
Orbital / Flying Lotus / Gary Numan / Ricardo Villalobos / Squarepusher / Battles / Jeff Mills / DOOM / A.T.O.L. = Modeselektor + Marcel Dettmann + Shed / Ellen Allien / Apparat Band / Four Tet / Carl Craig - 69 / Shackleton / Joker / Scuba / Clark / Scion ft. Tikiman / Sandwell District / Actress / Jacques Greene / Joymaster / Jackmaster / Addison Groove / Joy Orbison / Byetone / Boddika / SND / Objekt / Lucy / Daniel Stefanik / Oneman / Deadboy / Redinho / Spencer
looks pretty amazing tbf
:O
The venue looks fucking aceness too
Frankly, this lineup is obscene.
this looks amazing
i am DEFINITELY going now :D
expensive though...
it isnt really
when considering what other festivals cost. of course you have to include accomodation however that doesnt have to be a lot
I have a flat in SE London
I should rent the sofas out.
This looks great and is near me!
I may be in.
Oh god.
Want to go so badly.
So what is the venue? And where?
It's on the north side of the river, just downstream from the O2
http://www.londonpleasuregardens.com/site/2012/01/18/the-bloc-weekender-6th7th-july/
Ah cheers
Hmm, being in London is hella handy. Good show.
think bangface weekender will be better
but its not a bad line up
Can you not get day tickets for this?
......
Because I think I'd wanna go to the Flying Lotus day, but I'm not sure I could be bothered to go to both days.
Weekend tickets only.
I hope this doesn't sell out too quickly
I am 100% on it but completely broke at the moment... Might warrant a dip into the savings just to be on the safe side!
1000%n going to this
Shame its the same weekend as Free Rotation but that line up and being able to go home at the end of the night wins. Taking a year off from Bangface this year too so this fills the gap nicely.
Great linuep
Tickets purcharsed. Cannot wait.
Anyone found a way around the booking fee
I sorta resent paying £330+ quid when the tickets are all £99 but if I have to, then I will...
Made a playlist for this BTW
Feel free to add / subtract anything I missed or got wrong:

*SBTRKT
yaaay
I was just going to make one
This looks awesome.
Anybody have a any cheap accommodation options off hand? I'm travelling from Ireland so I don't want to spend a bomb.
since that initial line-up we have had additions of
Nicolas Jaar, Monolake, Surgeon and a few others. one showcase per week being announced. and there are still some AMAZING acts in the pipeline. some big, big boiz
I've been listening to Surgeon a lot today
VERY excited about that.
I might sell my primavera ticket
and go to this instead because it looks much better.
Nicolas Jaar / Monolake / Surgeon added
woot
Hmm should read the whole thread first
James Blake / Space Dimension Controller / Pariah / Untold
Added
They're really thinking outside the box there.
Best lineup
Ever.
HYPERDUB SHOWCASE ADDED
A menacing Hyperdub showcase including Hype Williams, Kode 9, and Cooly G will be in effect at Bloc 2012. They join Levon Vincent, Jacques Greene and Illum Sphere underneath Bleep.com’s eclectic banner.
Worth going for this alone
Very excited about this. Will be the only festival I go to this year (and possibly ever!)
Increasingly tempted by this.
If I go to Field Day AND Bloc, I will truly have become everything I used to hate.
So...
Richie Hawtin, Snoop Dogg and Steve Reich confirmed! (on the Bloc facebook)
Cool
This really needed to be over three days (at least.) With this quality a line-up I'm going to end up missing a lot through clashes.
/ dying from physical exhaustion from trying to see everything
Wow...
That's pretty... like...
WOW...
BLOC Weekend: “We Want To Go To This Party And Have A Good Time”
http://www.sonicrouter.com/2012/03/bloc-weekend-we-want-to-go-to-this-party-and-have-a-good-time/
So pumped for this
Just hope I can handle the pace
Day split and day tickets on sale now
http://www.blocweekend.com/lineup/
Impossible to choose between the two days
Will have to just hope that by next pay-day there's still weekend tickets, just booked my Dimensions ticket so definitely can't afford this this month!
Fuck it
Sonisphere's now cancelled, I have no birthday plans...shall I just get a weekend ticket?
Yes.
i am completely 100% straight faced well up for this
can't believe i haven't seen the line up until now.
BlocFlash: Early Bird and Express tickets are now sold out.
Hiya everyone

Bloc
is there gonna be
re-entry in and out of the festival??
if not how much approximately will drinks be (if you have that info)??
I asked the same question
And the answer was no re-entry, even if you have a weekend ticket
I hope you can go home between days...
Ticket booked!
So up for this.
oh go on then
i'll go.
clearly the best lineup of pretty much any event this summer right?
Tickets booked. Oh mama
OH MAN LOOK AT THIS SHIT!
http://www.blocweekend.com/feature/homepage/ms-stubnitz/
wow
can't wait!
i watched the video for this last night
sounds absolutely mental. the sheer logistics of sailing a massive communist era fishing vessel into london docks for use as a music venue in a larger festival site blows my mind. especially seen as last years Bloc was held at Butlins or whatever. ATP should take note
They sailed it up to Newcastle a few years ago for a mini festival there.
It was great.
http://www.navigatelive.org/index.html
Went on this in Amsterdam.
Just amazing. The music wasn't even that great then, but with this lineup on board? Jeeeeeesus christ.
Does anyone know what time the first acts will be on?
I know the gates open at 2 but just wondered what time it would get going.
According to twitter, weekend tickets nearly gone now
Serious question
Why is Snoop playing at this?
Boost ticket sales
Some people I know voiced an interest in coming 'to see Snoop' who have absolutely no idea about any other artists playing. Seems a bit mental for the price, but that's not to say they won't enjoy the rest of the music (they'll probably just get pilled up and not give a shit to be fair, but that's just what they happen to be like).
Bloc's always had a long running association with hip hop
And, you know... he's pretty great?
Just booked my ticket
Travelling from Ireland. Anybody for a meat?
New additions
Ben Sims
Luke Vibert
Al Tourettes
Jerome Hill

ADJ
cool article about one of the 'venues' here too
http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1616
'citing
Looks very cool
Do we know how many venues/stages there will be?
Looks like at least five from this pic
https://twitter.com/BLOCWKND/status/208243677645123584/photo/1
Ceephax Acid Waltzers :D
The overall capacity is 15,000
And I swear I read somewhere that boat has a capacity of 700. Seems a bit mental.
Anybody any cheap suggestions for a place to kip thats nearby?
this is looking difficult so :o
Holiday Inn is probably your best bet
although it'll set you back about £150.
Someone has deleted all the songs in my playlist
:(
Anyone received their tickets yet?
Also, I asked it further up the thread but no one answered - any idea what time the first people will be on?
Tickets are electronic (no physical tickets)
Says they'll be sent out about 2 weeks before the event, so should be any day now.
Yeah, that's why I was asking
Had a bit of a freak out because I couldn't remember receiving them in the post. Found the email and realised we should be getting the tickets around about now.
Hmm... look at the first paragraph here:
http://www.lfa2012.org/events/view/london-pleasure-gardens-58
Fuck
I'm going to ignore that and hope for the best
it won't affect BLOC though, will it?
Surely not
but that is annoying though because I was planning on going to that architecture thing tomorrow!
There's been adverse weather?
wrong kind of snow or something
Still no tickets for me
Anyone else?
nah not yet
nope
and its's just over a week away...
Think they said by the end of this week
fuck man less than 10 days I'm so excited
who is everyone looking forward to seeing? The most, as in - the line-up is pretty much all gold.
off the top of my head my choice picks are: Levon Vincent, Jeff Mills, DOOM, Richie Hawtie, Dusky b2b T Williams, Actress (if he shows), Midland, Perc, Villalobos and a good ride on the Ceephax Acid Waltzers
I've seen Nicolas Jaar, FlyLo, Battles, Snoop, Objekt, Hudson Mohawke and a lot of the UK bass lot before but would gladly again.
I thought I knew loads of these acts but in actuality, know about 11
So I'll probably just wander and hope to see some good shit.
Anyone you feel is a MUST see?
Flying Lotus, Richie Hawtin and Jeff Mills
all legends in their own fields
Friday stage times
https://twitter.com/BLOCWKND/status/217987280906878978/photo/1/large
Hawtin and Carl Craig clash, argh
I've seen Carl Craig before thankfully so can give him a miss
Though given how much I enjoyed him, I may try and do a bit of both.
Just realised I've no idea who 95% of these people are.
Follow me!
And all will be fine. There's pretty much no time slot after 8pm where there isn't something I want to see. And no way will Ricardo stop at 6am.
Awesome news
Guessing the boat won't hold more than a few hundred?
I swear I heard that it's 700 capacity
Which is fucking tiny as the overall capacity is 15,000. I must be wrong on this but no one confirmed or denied it above.
Pretty sure I heard it was under 1000 too
Quite a few good names announced for it as well...
Hmm, not holding out a lot of hope of getting on there then...
According to this page, it's 600
http://www.residentadvisor.net/club-detail.aspx?id=4526
The Guardian article about the ship said it has 100 rooms too, so not sure how much of that capacity is in the main room as opposed to the whole vessel?
I'll just take a wander in there maybe for a lower key act then...
Hmm, enough for 4% of the audience to get into
To be honest, I'll probably just check it out early for a look then give it a miss for the rest.
I thought
Steve Reich was on the Friday?
Steve Reich and the Bang on a Can All-Stars
have rather confusingly been abridged to 'Stars', RA Hub 6pm (if's definitely the case, Bloc confirmed on twitter)
They should really make that a bit clearer.
This means a 12 hour stint then. Let's do this.
I'm sure that's true
but it doesn't seem to say anything on their twitter since the Friday stage times announcement...?
sorry, I meant facebook
they posted a facebook reply to people asking that question on the friday schedule
After the comment above about capacity...
..I'm starting to get more nervous about what this going to be like. Looking at the times I'd want to be moving around a lot...
presume everyone has got that Friday off yeah?
because I certainly have. Along with the following Monday.
But of course
Phew, not too many bad clashes
Glad I saw Amon Tobin a few months ago. Means I'm free for the Digital Mystikz set. Going to be a little weird seeing Deadboy at 5pm.
I might be getting a press pass, which means I'll be selling my two-day ticket for cheaper than face value if anyone is interested.
I may be lurking for that ticket
If some cash stuff pans out in my favor
My plan for Friday (if it is actually possible to get on the boat at all):
Deadboy/Pinch on the Stubinitz.
Nicolas Jaar/Digital Mystikz/Shackleton at the RA Hub.
Back on the boat for Boddika/ Joy O & Jackmaster until Villalobos at 4!
Really have no idea if I'll be able to get on the boat though. Taken Friday off so will just go early and try and get on there, if I end up staying on there the entire time it will hardly be a bad thing.
It's probably a sign of how old I am
That I'm wondering what food facilities there will be and if there'll be anywhere under cover / to sit down...
haha
(me too)
All the stages are under cover as far as I know
Saturday timings:
https://twitter.com/BLOCWKND/status/218304791640674305/photo/1/large
Looks like I'll be spending most of Saturday in the Carharrt tent then.
Actress at 4pm?!
Bah.
They've clearly banking on him not showing
Didn't realise Actress had a habit of not showing up
Ha has the 3 times I've seen him.
Dunno really, but
https://twitter.com/Hyperdub/status/213218928737001472
And
http://www.skiddle.com/whats-on/Manchester/Jabez-Clegg/ZvA-%28zomby-v-actress%29-uk-debut-Drumclinic-1st-birthday/11413826/reviews.html
I guess if he doesn't show
I'll go and see Pariah dj
I'll be annoyed to get there for 4pm only to find an empty stage
but I'll be more annoyed to not be there at 4pm and miss Actress if he does play.
No way I'm gonna make that
if Villalobos is going on until 6.
villalobos is going to be seriously rammed with everyone coming
over from Hawtin once he's finished.
im airing on the side of leaving and being fresh for a bigger saturday
HudMo will be fairly popular too I reckon
The post-Villalobos DLR should be fun
Like when I came back from Homelands and people were passing a bottle of Lucozade round the carriage.
The sheer amount of stuff it's impossible to see (with clashes) is humbling
errrrrrm
when's steve reich playing? am i being blind, i cant see him on the lineup?
From up thread
Steve Reich and the Bang on a Can All-Stars have rather confusingly been abridged to 'Stars', RA Hub 6pm (if's definitely the case, Bloc confirmed on twitter)
phew!!!!
thought they'd sacked him off and sneakily not told anyone! of course he clashes with other stuff, which is the annoying thing about having so many good artists on.
y'know its all well and good trying to decide what to see now, however i know i'm just going to go to one room, end up really liking it and stay there all night, missing everyone else in the process!
Ticket received via email
fuck
I don't even know where to begin with planning for this, it's an incredible line-up, going to be amazing.
Biggest clash for me is probably A.T.O.L vs Jeff Mills
fwiw my choices (if there are clashes my preferences are in order by /)
FRIDAY
T Williams b2b Dusky > AGT Rave Cru > Midland / Nicolas Jaar / Mark Archer > Amon Tobin / DMZ > DOOM > Snoop Dogg > Nathan Fake > Richie Hawtin / Jamie Jones > Ricardo Villalobos / Jamie Jones / Hudson Mohawke
SATURDAY
Actress > Untold > Gary Numan / Jacques Greene / Illum Sphere > Battles > Ceephax Acid Cru / Oneohtrix Point Never / Luke Handsfree > Flying Lotus > Scuba > Jeff Mills / Objekt + Perc / Terror Danjah > Levon Vincent
the likelihood of getting into Stubnitz for Levon Vincent after the big Jeff/Objekt clash is minimal, which is a shame. On both days 3am - 6am is pretty jampacked whereas I find myself less enthused around midnight.
of course the overwhelming reality
is that I'll get really fucked and wind up missing all the rare techno legends and instead see Oneman again. for the 9th time (genuinely)
tbf that wouldn't be bad at all
Levon Vincent is playing the Laderaum stage, not the Stubnitz (hopefully Laderaum is larger)
though confusingly there's no Laderaum stage shown on the site map, unless I'm being blind.
I think thats the second (smaller?) stage within the Stubnitz
You're shitting me? Smaller?
I thought the Stubnitz was only a few hundred capacity anyway (festival: 15,000). What's the point of having tiny stages that no one can get into?
I'm not entirely sure on that, but I do think I remember something about there being two 'stages'
so I assume thats the smaller one.
I think the point is that it will be awesome! :P
That's almost certainly right
Laderaum is German for "hold" as in hold of a ship, and the Bloc website says there are two venues on the ship...
An atrium gallery looks over a main dancefloor, creating an industrial, hi-spec venue inside a maritime monument to Europe’s recent, turbulent history. A second club space at the bow of the vessel as well as the deck are also fully kitted out for Bloc-specced throwdowns.
if you can get in...
I might leave Jeff Mills at 3.30 to even stand a chance of seeing 30m of Levon
awesome environment vs very limited trade-off I guess
I'm not convinced, but I'm sure it'll be great either way. Think people with those express tickets will get in ahead of anyone else.
Anyone know
who Lekker and Black Amiga are? Sat in Laderaum. Not on the listings. I only ask because I may camp in there in preparation for Oneohtrix.
I liked the arc ep
http://soundcloud.com/experimedia/lakker-arc-ep-album-preview
Four Tet time is changing so he doesn't clash with Four Tet
Flying Lotus!
Which one is changing? To when?
Was kinda ok with this as I could see Four Tet, then half of FlyLo
Pfft
It's a festival. People are going to clash. Seems silly.
Says where?
Four Tet tweeted about it earlier.
Hmm
I was happy enough with the schedule as it was, hope this doesn't fuck it up.
Oh never mind, they've just swapped Clark and Four Tet around (from 10 - 11 and vice versa)
http://www.blocweekend.com/Bloc2012.pdf
yehhy
Kelefest
where is Ben Sims on the line-up?
he's down as playing
A friend just posted on Facebook
that he went to the site yesterday for the free festival that was on and it was very very dusty to the point where he struggled to see anything at one point. Bit worrying.
I've been told this by someone today as well
On the plus side, it'll save money on smoke machines
...
fuck.
lots of seriously negative comments about the site being unfinished and akin to a demolition site. bad times :(
Yeah
a lot of comments about the ground being rocky and uneven too. Now really lending itself to dancing!
Sounds exactly like the Outlook/Dimensions site
Except this is in an industrial area East London and not an abandoned fort in the 30 degree heat of the Croatian coastline :/
Still, it'll be amazing, chin up lads.
if the worst things we can say about it
is that 'it's a bit dusty' or 'it's a bit rocky' i will consider that a success.
plus if i'm honest, dancing in a dusty demolition site sounds pretty fucking cool
Yup
where better to dance to the likes of Shackleton and Surgeon
Reading all the comments on the LPG Facebook page
It does seem like people complaining for the sake of it. Great little conversation where someone is accused of having 'chemical help' after they said they enjoyed it, only to respond with 'No chemical help, just me and my four year old daughter, suck it up' :D
I don't think we need to be too worried about it being dusty
Muddy yes, but not dusty...
Friday heavy, slow moving and thundery showers. Saturday rain or showers, after perhaps starting largely dry.
An introduction to the Bloc site by Terror Danjah
http://allthingsterrordanjah.wordpress.com/2012/07/02/london-pleasure-gardens-ahead-of-bloc-weekend-2012/
:)
looks really cool
can see it turning pretty muddy/wet under foot if it rains as much as predicted, but given that all the main dance areas are well covered it shouldn't be too much of a problem, except when hitting up the bars and moving between areas.
So how much of it is under cover?
Capacity wise, The Hub holds 2,800 and sounds like it is.
The Dome holds 1,000 and likewise sounds like it is.
The Stubnitz holds 750ish by most accounts.
So from the image, I guess the main arena holds another 1000 or so more than the Hub?
All of the venues are under cover
With the exception of the Ceephax Acid Waltzers which, being a waltzer, I guess is also technically undercover. I read somewhere that their license only covers outdoor music until 11pm. So hopefully the combined capacity of the various venues adds up to at least 15,000 or there might be a lot of wet people hanging around.
So let's see: 15,000 people
- 2,800
-1,000
-750
leaves around another 10,000 on site. Gonna be hard to get into some tents, isn't it?
don't forget the floating cocktail bar!
that will cover the rest. done. seriously though, i wouldn't sweat it.
and i'd imagine that the 15,000 figure
assumes a sell out, with everyone with a weekend and a day ticket being present on the day, which is unlikely. Plus I can't really see the full capacity of people still kicking around in the small hours.
I survived Glastonbury in 1998
Trust me, the weather holds no fear for me whatsoever. Just more wondering if it'll be a bit like Field Day where only 2000 people out of 15,000 will be able to see some acts.
But hey, like you say. The plans and acts sound great so I'm sure it'll be fine.
Apparently the Dome has a 2000 capacity
http://www.carhartt-wip.com/music/music/2012/06/carhartt-festival-summer-bloc-festival
And the main stage a capacity of 8,000
http://www.blocweekend.com/uncategorized/bloc-stage/
Have to say
My expectations for the weekend are now pretty low based on all the capacity talk. The lineup is amazing, but it's likely that half of the people I bought a ticket to see I'm not actually going to get anywhere near.
Hope I'm wrong. Really wishing I bought express tickets now.
yeah I wish I had shelled out as well
:(
I thought express was just access to a separate bar and queue jump to get into the venue
If I realised it would involve this I would have got one too, but the fact there's express tickets in the first place has irked me from the start tbh
It just says express entry to the venue and wristband exchange
I doubt it allows you to get into specific tents/boats instead of us proles.
Here's hoping
I realise I'm being a bit whiny in this thread and I'll stop now but I've been looking forward to this for months and really don't want it to be shit! I will keep the faith.
I am currently more worried about my ill health tbh
Just desperately necking Robitussin and antihistamines in hope that I'll be well by Friday! I am very very excited about it overall though, I'm sure it'll be incredible.
So they've got Terror Danjah's set times wrong
I wonder who else's are wrong?
Yeah, I was wondering this too
is that whole Hyperdub showcase in the wrong order?
Looks like Kode9 told them the other day
that the times are wrong
https://twitter.com/kodenine/status/219093109517205505
What does it say (protected)?
Could do with Hype Williams being on later myself.
BLOC tweeted that the updated stage times were up
and Kode9 replied saying "The Hyperdub times are still wrong"
Thinking about it if Kode9 is protected then BLOC might not have seen that, whoops.
look at this site!
you can track ships an' shit. i never knew you could do this. i find this quite cool. Block just tweeted the live stubnitz tracker.
http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/default.aspx?mmsi=211218820&zoom=10&type_color=9
Having read loads of the review on there, I'm not actually so worried now
Most of the moaning seems to have been from people who popped down expecting a green landscaped garden and found a building site.
Sure, it'd be nice if it was hot, sunny and green but they've still not had all of their grant yet and this was always going to be a long term project. In terms of the look of it, the venues are in place and most of the negative comments seem to say things like 'It's more like a rave site than a green space' and 'Half the site was shut off because it's being saved for Bloc'. Which suit me fine.
Probably best we don't all worry until we get there.
The things that are a tad more concerning are the group deleting negative comments, potentially planting good ones and some of the comments regarding long entry queues and facilities. But hopefully that's an issue that LPG have caused as oppsoed to Bloc themselves, who have a pretty impeccable track record.
Besides, Primavera is on an old, dusty dock, and that's pretty good eh?
It may be more of a blessing that it's not really hot. Dancing for 10 hours straight in tents is never fun at the best of times. Plus I was down by Canary Wharf for a football game the other week when we had one good day of weather, and the heat was making the river kick up an ALMIGHTY stink.
Yeah I don't want to turn this into another Field Day thread
Where people just complain speculatively.
POSITIVE THOUGHTS PEOPLE. THERE'S A FUCKING ACID WALTZER.
I'm excited about this the most :D
definitely
its the first time they've done it there and it's a new festival site. yeah, there are bound to be some issues but so far it looks amazing, all the music on the bill is top and THERE'S A FUCKING ACID WALTZER AND A MASSIVE DEEP SEA FISHING VESSEL TRICKED OUT AS A FUCKING DANCE VENUE. i'm stoked
Finally sorted my life out and got a Friday ticket for this
Could only really choose one day because of work and stuff and in the end Shackleton swung it for me.
There are few things better than a Shackleton set
Good choice.
Heard that from a few people
Obviously disappointed to be missing Jeff Mills, Surgeon etc. but focusing more on who I will get to see than who I won't. Want to see Carl Craig, Jamie Jones and some of Jackmaster/Joy Orbison but can see myself just watching all of Richie Hawtin instead.
so, DiS meet?
anyone got ideas? is there a unifying act we can all agree on seeing? I mean, I've got a big group of pals going but it's always nice to meet with disfolk, even just by the bar in between DJs.
No t against having a DiS meet up at some point, just not sure when? Can't help feeling the timetable will be totally different on the day(s)
I'll probably recognise a few of y'all anyhow. But I am with 3 people who don't know about my DOUBLE LIFE.
fair do'z
Yeah I'm having enough trouble trying to organise meeting up with all my different groups of mates going
Maybe we could all post descriptions of what we're wearing on the day and then if we spot anyone we can shout a code-word and initiate a meet. My vote is for 'SCROTUM!', can't imagine that turning many heads.
Tomorrow!
Pumped.
dare i mention the d**** word
but do we know what beers and other delicious alcoholic beverages they will be selling?
I would put good money on it being cans of Red Stripe
But I have no idea. All I know is my aversion to 'chemical enhancements' mean two 13 hour drinking sessions are going to have a serious effect on my bank balanace (and liver but whatever).
Noticed on the LPG Facebook page yesterday
They confirmed they'd be draft beer there. Didn't specify which one though.
That is great news.
just looked on the forum
someone saying they went there for the opening think last weekend and it was £4 for beers £4.50 cider or thereabouts. dunno what type
£4 a pint would be pretty boss.
weather looks sort of alright too
fingers crossed!
getting very excitable
Yeah looks like a few heavy showers here and there
but as long as it isnt pissing down at the end of the night it should be fine :)
Just started to rebuild that Spotify playlist
but now I have to work. Who wants to help?
I think if you search for BLOC in the Spotify search field, there are 3 or 4 others if you can't be arsed!
Just noticed this comment in the official FAQ page
3. Will there be any more surprise performances from people who are not on the lineup?
Yes.
Hmmm... any rumours doing the rounds?
Also, for my 65th post today, here's a photo blog of the site
http://lpgphotoblog.tumblr.com/
It was on The Culture Show last night too briefly. The image a few screens down the blog of the little round room made out of pallettes is pretty wicked.

Genuinly so excited for tomorrow. I've been wanting to see Jeff Mills for so long.
wellies or trainers that is the question
Is it muddy!?
Wow
If Field Day gets a caning on here, this one is gonna get crucified...
Just incase anyone is worried they're missing out
This is an utter clusterfuck so far.
.
That's what I've heard. Is it just queuing fuckups?
.
(don't mean 'just' in that sense, obviously)
Is the queuing just if you've arrive later in the day?
Or was there massive queues around 3, 4ish
Someone on twitter posted a photo of the QUEUE for the boat:
https://twitter.com/RiccardoTr/status/221350277360529408/photo/1/large
Holy shit.
.
Going round twitter that it's been closed by the police?
musicOMH just tweeted this:
More people than there is space,' says our man on site at Bloc. 'Outrageous queues and a lot of frustration.
.
Some people saying they've stopped the music too!
no they didn't tweet that, bloody DiS quotations, they did tweet:
We're hearing Bloc has been shut down by the police.
followed by:
More people than there is space, says our man on site at Bloc. Outrageous queues and a lot of frustration.
also they just retweeted someone saying no one allowed on site - including artists - due to over crowding. Sounds like a right mess. Shame I know somebody who's gone.
Got here at 5:30
Got onsite at 7:30 after seriously nearly being crushed to death in the worst holding system ever. Girls crying, blokes pushing down barriers to get in, I genuinely felt in fear of not getting out. Told a security guard and they were still letting in people half hour later. Eventually people started shouting and they went from letting no one in to everyone. Meaning everyones got wristbands for the weekend now regardless of if they bought day tickets or not. People are now rushing stages as queues are up to anhour long for stages with absolute nobodies on them.
Most of the bars are out of beer. The sound bleed is terrible and I can hear people talking a few metres away from me in some tents.
People are angry. The boat IS shut. The stages are letting people in and you can barely get in anywhere.
So far I've seen an hour of music I have no interest in becuase it's the only place we could get in.
It's a horror show. There will be fights tonight or, if we are really unlucky, people getting crushed.
A security guard also told us they had to turn away over 1000 people with genuine tickets as the site is so fucked.
We're heading home in about 15...
Reading the tweets from the event and no one is posting anything postive. Pretty relieved I didn't end up going to the damn thing now.
It's a shame, as the line up looked one of the highlights of the year. I would have definitely gone if July hadn't been so compact (I have three festivals in the next four weeks)
I'm still here
Stuck in the RA tent cos if I leave I probably will get stuck outside on my own. Apparently half the festival is closed off, can't confirm that but the boat is definitely shut. Music is fucking quiet, all I can hear is people talking. Dread to think what will happen when Snoop finishes and everyone piles out of the main stage. Complete nightmare basically.
Snoop still hasn't turned up. Reckon it'll all be over pretty soon.
yeah, us too. colossal fuck up
we're behind the sound desks. you?
nightmare.
Police have now cordoned off the site
And forcing people to leave. Some people are getting angry buy to be honest, I don't blame them. People are still turning up and the crowds are getting dangerous.
Rumour is the website is organising refunds. The police also said they will probably close and lock down the site tonight.
I left just after 11pm as the queues/mobs were so deep and wide it wasn't worth trying to get in
Field day was never this bad and I've been to five of those. Looks like I made the right choice to leave early. The original plan was to make a night of it and get the first train in the morning.
It was obviously way over sold. Couple this with incompetent organisation and the night was a joke. Queued for 30 mins to get in to the main stage( would have been longer but I made friends with people near the front) and once I got in it wasn't even half full. No need for queues like that .Was there for 5 hours and managed to see about an hour of music.I have a weekend ticket but not sure if I can be arsed going to queue tomorrow. If it's been shut down tonight will it actually happen tomorrow?
I don't do this often but I'm so angry I'm going to tweet something mean about them. That will show them!
Just seen the comments on the Facebook event wall
Oooooof.
https://www.facebook.com/events/231067446977296/
On my way home
I'm not coming here tomorrow. I'm not prepared to put my girlfriend or myself at risk like that again.
The atmosphere on site wasn't actually thy bad but I think thy was because everybody could see the problems happening from the moment they arrived. It was no shock.
At 9 the tents were full, but the outside areas were full. I could accept not seeing certain people and staying in one venue, but then so many people were stuck on the same situation that it all got a bit too close and scary.
Whoever set the capacity and ticket numbers needs to take responsibility were Bloc told a number and naively followed it?
Now's
the time for that ATP statement!
ATP fucked up quite a lot recently but at least it's always been ahead of time & has had any number of external factors involved
this is just outright stupidity, a clear case of overselling
So yeah, all closed down.
As long as I get my money back it'll be alright I guess, fucking awful organisation though and a real shame.
Will be interesting to know if it's Bloc or LPGs fault
Someone massively over promised. We were all concerned that 15,000 into 3 tents don't go but beyond that, the system to get in was barmy. Security lost control, people were selfish and broke down barriers and at one point I was unable to move or touch the floor let alone get out.
Couldn't give a shit about the money or bands to be honest. At one point I was genuinely concerned that some people might not get out alive. Helps that I'm tall but loads of shorter people getting crushed were having panic attacks. Hence why after half hour of the crowd pleading to be let out/in they then let us all in meaning people with day tickets were given weekend passes. If it does go ahead tomorrow (it won't) it'll just happen all over again.
Admittedly once you got through that hell hole of an entry system
It was stupidly busy but not so dangerous. But there were more people outside the tents than in them I'd wager so it was just a matter of time before it escalated.
Some of the reactions on twitter seem very over the top to me given what I personally saw on site but that hour in the inside wristband section was just horrid. Mentally scarring even. My mate bailed and various people just got hoisted out by guards and shown out.
so im not sure why the reaction seems very over the top?
I dunno
Just some people saying there were fights and riots. When I left at 12:30 people were being pretty good natured considering and there was no aggro with the polices decision. Maybe elsewhere on the site it was different. I dunno...
I heard that there were a massive amount of fake tickets sold...
could have something to do with the overcrowding. Glad I resisted the temptation to make the trip down!
Started queuing at 7.15 got in at 8.45
Queues for everything inside, massive queue for main arena when we got in, spoke to security guard who said it was running an hour behind schedule so walked a really long way to floating cocktail bar (played on laptops -highlight of festival!) went back across to main arena and saw some of DOOM, left only to find massive queue outside. Started to queue for ship only to hear that it was now being closed for the night - this was 11.30pm ish. Eventually made it into the Hub, sound was awful. Left there to find a police cordon outside, spoke with a policeman who told me that apparently people had forced their way into the site because got frustrated with queuing - not surprising there was a really bad crush when I'd been queuing with people jumping over the fences - they told me it would be shut down within the next hour so I left. Worst festival ever.
i've seen a fair few friends and others saying on Twitter
that the vibe amongst the people there was very friendly and good natured considering what went on. thank fuck for that; can only imagine what it'd be like if it had been a rowdy more drunken crowd.
sounds like some kind of proper disaster has been narrowly avoided.
how the fuck does this sort of thing even happen?
Crushes seem to be happening far too often recently....needs to stop. Do they seriously just overestimate the capacity of these things? - a similar catastophe nearly happened at Shangri La for last years glasto - too many people trying to squeeze through one queue for one event
The thing with Shangri-la was that it was always overcrowded and the measures to prevent it stopped Shangri La from getting overcrowded
but led to the entrances being rammed. Hopefully they've used the year off for plans to make that area bigger.
What a disaster
from my perspective, there were clearly too many people for the smaller stages, the main one was the only one close to being easy to get into... if LPG told Bloc the capacity was bigger than was the case they need to be sued, but at the same time it's hard to believe Bloc thought they had the infrastructure there for 15,000 people if they'd actually thought about it.
Genuinely can't believe what a mess that was
Hour and a half queue to get in, most of which involved standing looking at the entrance and not being allowed in. No communication from security and a massive police presence made me fear the worst. Managed to see Shackleton but everything after that was one big queue. Bailed when we heard the mainstage wasn't reopening and managed to get the last DLR back.
what an utter fuckup.
Feeling sorry for myself for missing today
And even more sorry for you poor sods who went down with the ship yesterday.
Feel awful for the people that went yesterday!
what a colossal disappointment
dummy have posted a report (saying much the same as the above) with a few photos
http://www.dummymag.com/news/2012/07/07/bloc-shut-down/
Pretty spot on I'd say
Any links to pictures that aren't blocked by my work's anti-malware system?
Friend said they went straight on the Stubnitz once they got there (early) and didn't realise anything was wrong for hours until they left at midnight and saw the carnage.
I heard from a number if people
That the security stopped scanning tickets and people were just grabbing handfuls of wristbands. What an utter mess!
*of
Apparently the area got so crowded and people were having anxiety attacks that they just started giving weekend wristbands to people
just to let them out of the room
To the extent that if today HAD gone on you would have had a lot of people who had day tickets with weekend passes
imagine if that happened!
Would have been carnage
The issues started with that entry system. Multiple ways in meaning people were queue jumping and cutting corners. Then you got inside and were squeezed into an area fit for about 100 people tops. Barriers being pushed down, crowd surges towards corners of the queuing lines, people on shoulders asking for help as their friends were passing out nearby.
The gates were rigged to cope with a few dozen polite family members not several thousand people.
Really felt for security at times as it was a thankless task HOWEVER the organisers should get banned from ever doing anything like this again. Genuinely a miracle people got out of there intact.
And isay this as someone who has survived ATR mosh pits.
wooop! bloc roll call
on route down to london now for this festival now, so freaking stoked!
who's going?!
Not sure if this is serious?
if it is, you need to look ^ that way
Saw the headline "CHAOTIC SCENES AS POLICE SHUT DOWN BLOC FESTIVAL"...
then the article picture was just a pissed guy dressed as a banana.
As an aside rant
Some peoplel need to look at themselves too.
People pushing, littering, throwing beer cans over their shoulder, pissing inside tents, breaking down barriers, barging through emergency exits, grabbing handfuls of wristbands on the way in for mates, abusing the police, one 19 year old twat nearly getting decked for abusing a bunch of blokes for what they were wearing...
I know extreme situations bring out mob mentality but some Londoners are utter pricks.
People panic/get aggravated in confined spaces
this isn't a London thing, it's a human thing
I get that
But most of those things only added to the fuss and caused that crushing. If people had been more patient and queued properly things would have been very different. Heard so many people saying I'm not waiting that long for a beer then pushing open barriers to get in, leaving whole sections overloaded and trapped. Some people were genuinely panicking and whilst the security and set up were abysmal, a lot of the surges were just down to people's selfishness.
you shouldn't be able to push open barriers
So has everyone seen this?
All the complaints that were posted on their Facebook page before they deleted them. http://twitpic.com/a4pei0
These still exist don't they?
it's just after a little bit they minimize to the microwall, I can assure you the are plenty of complaints there still
I haven't checked myself
The tweet I saw that linked to that said they'd been removed, idk
What the fuck is a microwall?
Feel like I got off lightly
As I queued for a mere 40 mins and managed to see a few things (Shackleton, Ama Tobin, Pinch) - once we saw the boat was closed we sensed trouble and left to get the DLR. So glad we left when we did. What an utter shambles.
Shola Ama + Amon Tobin
Cool
,
LONDON METROPOLITAN ELITE FESTIVAL.
we wanted to be the sky
:'(
A shambles from the first minute (my experience)
Arrived at 4pm thinking it would have been open at 2pm but there was a huge queue. We were express tickets and somehow managed to be 3rd/4th in the whole festival just by walking up to the gate and saying we had Express tickets. The fact that there was ONE sniffer dog worried me in terms of how they were going to handle 15,000 peoplk. The first security guard we encountered forewarned us, "These guys don't know what they're doing".
We went straight to the ship as we thought it would be crowded but it was cordoned off. They suddenly removed the barrier and let us through but there was one security guard stopping a bloke saying it wasn't open for another hour AS THEY LET OTHER PEOPLE PAST?! The man said, "The organiser told me to meet him at the Stubnitz" and the guard turned around and realised it was open. Complete lack of communication.
Got onto the Stubnitz which was an AWESOME venue. There was no cider at the bars even though the festival should have opened 3 hours beforehand. They began to carry on crates of cider so my mate bought one. Saw Pinch, went to get another cider but the head barman said Bloc had told them to stop selling cans of cider so he had to empty all of the fridges despite some poor sods carrying all these crates on. Bizarre. There was already a massive queue for the ship at 6pm despite the Lauderam being basically empty inside. Accepted that probably wouldn't get back onto the ship that night as there was still probably 75% of the crowd to even arrive on site.
Bumped into a friend who had a Press pass. He said they had him down on the list but had run out of actually press access ID so they would ring him later when they found one - he wasn't best pleased!
Looked into the Carharrt(sp?) Dome - the sound was abysmal. I could have a proper conversation with my friend at normal speaking volume without struggle. Started talking to a bloke who complained to the sound guy - he said the sound guy said it was a joke himself and they were going to have to turn it down FURTHER at 11pm to comply with noise regulation where I assume it would have been little more than background music.
Got caught into a dangerous funnel getting into the RA tent to see Nicolas Jaar and the poor security guards just didn't have a clue/queue system to let everyone in. There was a huge crowd gathering as people were coming out of the tent and shouting "It's empty inside!". They were right - huge surge to finally get in and nobody inside. Also the official guide timings were wrong! Tried to see Steve Reich at 7.25ish and he'd finished despite it saying 6pm-8pm.
Stayed for DMZ - Mala visibly pissed off as there's a 15min delay because the decks won't work. MC kept talking of sub but there was little to no bass on the soundsystem effectively making their sound redundant. Met a mate who told us of the horror stories at the entrance. Bumped into a conversation between Appleblim and a punter who was praising his set. "Are you going to see Shackleton?" Appleblim's response - "I don't even know if I'll be allowed in myself". All this in front of a dangerously cramped queue developing to the toilets at the back of the Carharrt dome despite there being plenty of available toilets.
Just gave up and went to the main stage - people just pushing to the front and pushing past security at the express entrance in the queue to get in. Absolute no order - the poor guard just let random people in when it got too much. Waited with everyone else for Snoop and when that announcement came on got seriously worried that were would be a riot. Fair play to the crowd - I didn't see much more that boos and a few bottles. I think everyone had just given up and had no energy to kick up a fuss so made their way out. Hung around - walked past security guards who let us into restricted areas for no reason as we were looking for somewhere to sit. Some guards told us to go back to a stage and "enjoy ourselves" despite the bloke with a megaphone telling us to leave.
Now, we made friends with a guy later on at a hotel who knew the organisers and told us that despite setting up Snoop's equipment they knew they'd lost it at 11pm and there would be no intention of letting anymore acts play. If that's true then that's appalling - letting us stay another 1hr 45mins and potentially having a riot on our hands. He even said there was a rumour that they told Snoop to not even leave his hotel room and he shouldn't bother.
I suppose the whole point is that from the very first minute no-one seemed to know what was going on. We could forgive the cider/wrong wristbands as teething problems but these small problems just seemed to escalate as the night went on until the inevitable. There just didn't seem to be any communication between organisers and security and they didn't know how to manage the crowd flows into tents.
Indicative of the whole event - after receiving the wrong wristbands we went up to a girl with a walkie talkie and a Bloc t-shirt and asked how to change our wristbands. She got out a map, said she didn't who was best to talk to and that she was guessing where the production office was on site. Eventually a steward just walked up to the entrance and just grabbed the right wristbands out of a bag and bought them to us.
Appalling.
Great post
no way that Bloc can recover from this.
We found that too
Big queues early on but then no one in the tents when you got through. It sounds stupid but it was almost as if because it was dark inside they couldn't tell how many people were in there. They had security guys on the entrance and exits with those number clicker things, but no idea if they were communicating.
We saw Midland in the Carhatt Dome at 8 and though the sound wasn't up to much either. But that dome was weirdly set out. The DJs faced the entrance and were set up in the middle of it, so everyone stood nearest the doorway, meaning there was tonnes of room around the back.
So (opportunistically)
are there any fallback events happening? All those acts in London at a loose end, is anyone putting anything on?
Get your merch peeps!
http://yfrog.com/ntzh0ndj
the folks by the industrial container
were banging out 'True to Myself' by Villalobos when we passed, I think.
worried for Bloc. refunding everyone is going to be damaging.
Especially when they've got most of the acts still to pay!
Easy to be wise after the event
But given that the Pleasure Gardens' whole opening hasn't exactly gone well in the last few weeks, this all feels like it was somehow inevitable. Bloc should probably have been a lot wiser following the complaints and "teething problems" last weekend, particularly given that it was widely reported that much of the site wasn't open yet and the DLR couldn't cope and the site entrances weren't big enough.
To me, it looks like they took a big gamble and it's backfired on them pretty badly
What's the likelihood of actually getting a refund?
I'm in shock at this, it seems to have gone worse than anyone could possibly have imagined. Feel very for all the people coming from outside London (and the UK) especially. As the facts appear to stand, this has been basically negligent and they surely won't get consent to put on any major events ever again?
T&Cs state refunds in case of cancelation
yeah, they'd have to
that and paying the artists will presumably send them bankrupt, but even if they somehow could wriggle out of refund payments then who would ever go to a festival run by them again if they withheld?
The best case scenario for Bloc is if it comes out that a large chunk of the fault rests with the ticket company or the Pleasure Gardens and they can sue them or whatever. Still, even if they survive financially, they've clearly blown their chance of staging an event this size ever again.
Oh yeah, obviously they have to give refunds but I'm essentially wondering whether they might go bankrupt before they can afford to pay out ticketholders
Refund or not, there's no way you'd buy a ticket off the organisers again.
well they physically have everybody's money I guess
if they held on to it they'd only really be losing bar sales in terms of profit, so I can't see they'd go bankrupt WITHOUT paying it back - but obviously yeah, not sure what happens if they only have, say, the money to refund 75 per cent of tickets...
if you bought with a credit card you'll be sorted for refunds whatever
oneohtrix point never
is playing XOYO tonight, £5 FYI
Plus Blank Mass and Factory Floor
First-come-first-served from 8pm.
Might dash down there.
OOOOOH
i'm sure
they'll have insurance to cover cancellation - though it could take a while. When beacons was cancelled at the last minute last year the messages they were sending out implied the insurance would take a while to pay out though. That was due to weather though, not sure what the deal is if they've massively messed up themselves
They'll have insurance to cover them for things beyond their control
rse weather, artist cancellation etc); they won't have cover for things that weren't (organisational fuck-ups).(adve
don't know what happened to my post there.
friend of a friend job, but...
apparently much of the festival is insured against their parents' houses. Would love to be a fly on the wall at their Christmas dinner
I seriously doubt you can make an insurance claim under these circumstances
even if it turns out that the shambles isn't Bloc's fault (which is probably is) then I would imagine they'd have to sue or settle with whoever's fault it was...
Liking the tagged
artists in this thread :)
where is everyone?
Anyone know what this guys on about?
Worst thing about the last 24hrs is the lack of communication from the organisers. You would expect much more than a not apologising post from who lives entertaining PEOPLE.
Well that didn't quite go as expected...
In regards to getting in, I arrived around 5-6ish and had to queue for around an hour. The mood was good and things seemed to be going smoothly. Got in and the site looked great, plus there were few queues for bars etc, although it was already very busy in the hub and there was a lengthy queue for the Subnitz. Had a scout around before joining the queue to get on the boat. Took around half an hour as by that point it was already one in one out. Best decision I made all afternoon. One of the biggest shames is that so many people won't have been able to see it. Incredible space and the sound was fantastic. Spent a couple of hours or so in the bow of the boat at the boiler room secret showcase where Xhin and Ben Sims came on and Richie Hawtin was supposedly coming on to do a set a bit later. We decided to head out however around 8/9 ish to meet a friend and that's where the evening ended. Came out to find a massive scrum of people fighting to get on, pushing down the metal barriers and jumping onto the quayside. Security looked like they had no idea what to do.
Met the friend before attempting to head to the hub, where we joined a massive scrum to get in which didn't move for about 20 mins. Did eventually manage to get in only to find it insanely busy (durr)and the sound muddy at best. Decided to fight our way out, finding hundreds of people forcing their way in through the exit. At that point people at the boat were being informed that the boat was being shut and wouldn't reopen again, with police starting to appear. After a bit more standing around deliberating what to do it was then the barrier started going up between the acide waltzers and the main area and things looked like they were rapidly going down the pan.
Shortly after that was when the main arena started to pile out after finding out snoop would be a no show, with people rushing out quickly trying to find other bits to go to and that's when it decended into chaos. After much standing around we finally headed for the exit and ended up walking round to ExCel to get a night bus.
Such a shame and i'm bitterly disappointed. Incredible line up and potentially fantastic site marred by poor events management and massive over subscription. Half the number of attendees would have probably only just been manageable. Of course it is the first time they have done it there and there were always going to be teething problems but it was pretty clear from even before the festival (and much discussed on here, although I didn't really want to speculate on it) that the capacity of the venues was not going to be sufficient to deal with the alledged numbers of people going, especially as there were few places outside the tents/boat where people could just sit, or listen to outdoor music. Such a disappointment, and it looked so glorious when we arrived in the evening sun on the DLR!
What happened with the crowd in the main tent waiting for Snoop?
A security bloke I spoke to said they were holding off telling them because they were scared about what might happen when they did. They were still in there when we left.
Everyone just walked off from what I could see
The group 'awwwww' was a little funny. APPARENTLY there was going to be a hologram too, as my friend saw his lecturer on stage with a hologram set up who does that sort of thing. Tupac would have saved the day.

Spead the word
Aside from how poorly organised it was
Steve Reich ensemble were brilliant
Nicolas Jaar was brilliant
Amon Tobin visually was INCREDIBLE
And DOOM was great as per
Even though we had no personal incidents or saw any, you could tell it was so poorly run. Really makes you think about why other festival organisers make artist clashes.
4 different acts is the most I've heard anyone say they saw
Was speaking to people in the queue for the main stage who said they'd been there for 6 hours and still not seen anyone. Thought I'd be there with ample time to spare to get in to see Amon Tobin but we all know what happened next. Caught the tail end of Digital Mystikz who were ruined by the bad sound but really enjoyed Shackleton, mostly because after the queues I was so determined to have a good time that I didn't let the fact it sounded like a particularly loud pub in there ruin it for me.
I wish
everyone doing these fallout nights would give up their 'super secret guests' – I'm sat at home stuck trying to decide between three events!
Kode 9 showcase
is at Rhythm Factory
and by Kode 9
I mean Hyperdub
yeah, so
Hyperdub night? Flylo heavily rumoured...
Flying Lotus
XOYO at 1.30
Rhythm Factory at 3(ish)
XOYO it is
was really looking forward to seeing Oneohtrix this weekend too so I'm all over that.
good line up at Peckham Palais

GO SOUTH LONDON
front of the queue
gis a wave, DiSers.
Furthermore to my excessive rant
Met up with a friend today to debrief from yesterday's horror story. As he moved into the tent for Snoop Dogg he spoke to a "security guard" and mentioned what a nightmare he might be having, The "guard" told him that this wasn't his job and he was told to don a flourescent bib to control the crowd even though he was from the PRODUCTION TEAM. Poor bloke.
it's funny that
Bloc was billed as a "Dystopian nightmare of sorts," right?
so did anyone go to any of the Bloc replacement nights?
we were first in line for the Hyperdub night. tracking down nights over Twitter was great fun. considered XOYO, realised the two big Peckham nights were too far away, then heard about the Hyperdub one just down the road :o ...and I figured FlyLo would end up at the hd night, which turned out to be correct.
just got back, couldn't handle any more of the heat. Ikonika and Bok Bok, Cooly G, FlyLo, fucking great. Kode9's new tune is also a monster.
I went to XOYO
properly brilliant, really enjoyed everyone I saw. Delighted to get to see Oneohtrix point never finally, who was brilliant, though It seemed a bit weird/unfortunate for him to end up playing in the middle of a quite dancey night.
FlyLo was wonderful, a usual. THAT MAN IS SO BLOODY BEAUTIFUL AND CHARISMATIC.
^this
was a really good night ... I had to leave before FlyLo to catch the last train home (had originally planned to do an allnighter at Bloc and get first tube/train in the morning) but Blanck Mass, Factory Floor and Oneohtrix were all on top form
Great night, so glad people alerted me to it up there. Cheers!
Blsnck Mass picked up when he started to add more of a Fuck Buttons-y propulsion/beat to the songs.
Factory Floor were great as always, hypnotic and exciting. Oneohtrix Point Never was lovely but a bit weird in between the dancey stuff, although a few people valiantly tried to dance. I thought that was crazy.
*whispers*
I wasn't that familiar with FlyLo before, but I loved his set. Really got the crowd going. Was exhausted at the end.
£5!
it was so hot my girlfriend passed out (!!!)
she was totally fine, back on her feet within a few minutes but a bit embarrassed. can't believe I fucking missed FlyLo f/The Weeknd. ARSE.
my mate John spent the hours of 2-4am last night on the verge of tears (has been closely affiliated with Bloc in the past year) and spent all of today tireless organising the whole Hyperdub night as well as DJing for 2 1/2 hours at the start when Ill Blu bailed. Ended his set on Windowlicker as well. what a hero.
full, detailed post of my Bloc experience forthcoming in the morning
bizarre but kinda enjoyable 48 hours. gonna hit the sack now.
John Montoya, what a hero
although I reckon I would have enjoyed the Perc/Plex or Jaqcues Greene/Actress/Fort Romeau/Martyn shows more.
the heat was pretty unbearable
but in all fairness they had to try and get as many people in from the rain as possible and save their weekends. place was a good hundred or so over capacity but them's the breaks. I never really got off the ground with boozing, was knackered and was trying to get my friends in from the queue, then my gf went woozy blah blah...so wasn't in a partying mood I guess.
still, for a last-minute free event clobbered together in the wake of a festival going tits up....can't really complain!
also can we all agree that
Kode9 looks like http://mimg.ugo.com/201008/55618/cuts/wayne-knight-toy-story-2_288x288.jpg
Gutted I couldn't get into the Hyperdub show, got there at 10.30 which was way too late
Gave up queuing after about 40 mins and went to the Alibi and danced to 2 Chainz instead.
Overall, still not that angry about Bloc, just think it's a massive shame.
it wasnt over-subscribed according to this
http://www.factmag.com/2012/07/08/met-police-bloc-issues-not-due-to-over-ticketing/
I don't remember it raining at all.
I don't know what they're trying to say
All of the stages were covered, so surely if they'd sold as many tickets as there was space then everyone would have been able to find cover without any trouble.
That's quite clearly a deliberately dishonest statement from the police
What's the venue's role in the olympics, if any?
It's a cultural piece
to showcase the British love for queues
that is totally untrue
it didn't rain at all after about 4/5pm if it had done it would have been fucking apocalyptic... I realise it's a bit absurd to use such excessive language about a cancelled festival where nobody got hurt, but it's kind of Orwellian to just say it was raining in defiance of several thousand people's memories and expect to get away with it... I honestly thought the police came out of the night with a lot of credit, so this is pretty disappointing.
It was actually really nice weather, in fact the weather was the only thing that did work
A few thoughts on why the police are saying this...
a) Presumably they were in some way involved in licensing the venue so they would probably not want to be the first to admit they got their sums wrong
b) I wonder what Bloc's insurance is, do we think there's a chance the insurance company may not pay out if it's shown that it's the incompetence of the organisers that caused the cancellation rather than something beyond their control (e.g. rain)? If that were the case then the police may be doing Bloc, and in a roundabout way those of waiting for refunds, a favour to make sure they get a payout.
c) Maybe they meant this was why Saturday was cancelled - as it would indeed have been an absolute disaster given the awful weather on Saturday night
d) The person writing the press release simply doesn't know what they're talking about
But regardless
To put out a release that states the reason a music festival was shut down was due to too many people actually trying to hear the music beggars belief and shows quite what a mess this whole situation was.
I suspect it's because of this:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/2012/jul/08/bloc-promoters-venue-olympics-concert?newsfeed=true
Went to the Xoyo show.
Just want to say a massive thank you to the artists, management, venues and punters who managed to salvage something from the wreckage of this year's Bloc. Seeing Blank Mass, Factory Floor, Oneohtrix Point Never, Darkstar, Flying Lotus et al all for £5 was pretty unbeatable. You're all brilliant.
We are also working to ensure that everyone will be refunded for their tickets.
http://www.blocweekend.com
Gobsmacked
the word 'sorry' is not in this statement. If Bloc has a future they need to get in contact with a PR firm quick.
mm it does say sorry though
albeit 24 hours too late.
To be fair, it is
Thanks to all of you, as well as the many artists and crew who travelled across the world to come to Bloc - we are so sorry that we couldn't deliver the experience we had planned.
my mates went and have reported back:
'It was a massive fuckup, but a dream bill. We still had fun and there's talk of refunds so might get to have seen Amon Tobin and Nico Jaar for free :-))'
sounds alright really
Lucky them, some people didn't see anything.
yeah I guess so
I didn't go, so I'll leave the thread now... no view on it myself other than I'm glad I decided not to get a ticket along with them.
back from Lndn after an event filled weekend
still pretty gutted about Bloc but made the most of the weekend.
Got down there at 14:15, gates didn't open till almost 16:30 which was a pain, especially as the whole queue was disregarded and we ended up behind people who had turned up 5 minutes ago, but still the sun was shining and the day looked promising.
Went straight to Stubnitz for the first hour, brilliant venue, it was already rocking at 5pm as we watched Deadboy (i think). People were already queueing to get on at 17:45 when we left and it was nowhere near full.
Good points:
Saw Steve Reich, Amon Tobin, Midland and Xhin.
The giant light board penis people made on the way to the floating cocktail place (anyone have a picture?)
I think overall we did pretty well musically and glad we got to board Stubnitz.
The bad: pretty much 9pm onwards
People people everywhere. A few more friends arrived and said the entrance had been stormed and people were just rushing through, ripping up fences, snatching handfuls of wristbands. I know it said crowdsurge on the tickets but come on...
We decided to get onto the boat and stay there til Joy O/Jackmaster, but no. The queue to get on was obscene but seemed to be moving and people were getting on and off so we stuck it out for half an hour. Got to somewhere near the burger van on the left hand side before all hell broke lose, never seen anything like it, people just mindlessly pushing despite shouts and screams from people to stop, absolute cuntish behaviour. We had to climb over the barrier to stop getting crushed ourselves, felt fear for the people down at the very front near the herras fencing that just buckled as people trampled to get further forward, absolute cunts, they could clearly see what their actions were doing but carried on regardless, am still angry now thinking about it. That was it after that, we managed to get out and regroup. My gf and some other mates decided that was that and left, a few of us decided to stick it out in the RA hub for the rest of the night, until it was (thankfully) shutdown.
Ended up going to Cable and having a pretty good night. Saturday at XOYO was great too so at least something was salvaged from the weekend.
Just glad nobody was seriously injured and it looks like we'll be getting refunds.
Was justing reading some of the comments upthread and people were airing concerns about capacity a week or two ago. There just wasn't room for 15,000 people and it was a real shame it all went tits up because it had the potential to be incredible.
Not much to add now, but I'll do the standard highlights/lowlights reel for fun:
HIGHLIGHTS
- The XOYO show... Obviously. The line up was fully ridiculous - Blanck Mass, Oneohtrix Point Never & Factory Floor Live, with DJ sets from Andrew Hung, Darkstar, Oneman and Flying Lotus. To be fair, I can't imagine having had much of a better night at a properly organised Bloc festival.
There was 3 or 4 cracking Bloc replacement parties on across London, which really is one of the most heart-warming displays of affection I've ever seen from a group of artists towards their fans. FlyLo was clearly stoked to be there, playing to a crowd hanging on every beat & drop, supported on stage by a bunch of mates, DJs, a surprise hype man (The Weeknd) and bizarre celebrities (Venus Williams, anyone?).
Obviously, this is no comfort to the thousands who couldn't make these events, but I think the artists who played did themselves proud.
- Steve Reich was great apart from the loud chitter-chatter of the crowd, and Amon Tobin's ISAM set was an awesome spectacle... the sound was pretty spot on too.
- DiS's SCROTUM who went out of his way to buy a weekend ticket for a complete stranger, and reminded me that among the bitter trolls there are some pretty cool peeps on here.
LOWLIGHTS
- All of the above and more really. No refund will cover the costs for the girl I met who flew over from Sydney to the festival, or hundreds of others in similar positions.
Regardless of whether we all get refunded, nothing will make up for the bitter disappointment of missing some of the acts on that line up, especially those who rarely/never play in the UK.
On top of everything, the London Pleasure Gardens is truly a horrible venue, I'm sure the OP didn't realise how apt his prophecy of a dystopian nightmare would be. Little more than a few fairground rides, tents, and a shit dome dumped in the mud by the docks. I'd urge any non-goers not to attend any future events there, even if it isn't sold out to twice the appropriate capacity.
Venus Williams
:-D
Here's a short vid of FlyLo and The Weeknd mixing up some HudMo & Weezy
before the stage got properly rammed:

:)
Oh and I forgot to add that DOOM was incredibly shit
I pretty much expected it, and that's why I've never paid for one of his shows before. Who the fuck still gives money to that bozo?
Just a fat 40 something in a mask, muttering inaudible verses over the bass lines of his tracks. He has literally no stage presence.
DOOM stans are mugs.
So, what’s a typical day in the life of Bloc’s organisers?
Ooh I don’t know, what did I do today? We kind of get up late and probably go for a stroll down by the canal in Hackney Wick, and then it’ll probably be time for some lunch, so go and have some lunch and talk about what we did at the weekend and music, that sort of thing. Answer the phone, shout at each other – we bicker a lot, probably bicker and argue about money, disagree with each other’s decisions that have been made over the weekend on email. Then it’ll probably be time for another walk, might get to the office for the first time by about 3.30pm, go on Facebook for a little bit and then fuck it off and go to the pub at about 5.30pm or something.
(Laughs) That sounds a lot of fun, I’m sure there’s a lot more hard work in it than that but yeah.
(Laughs)
http://theransomnote.co.uk/mobile/BLOC-2012-INTERVIEW-WITH-DIRECTOR-ALEX-BENSON/
That's quite damning isn't it
Also I think there was definitely going to be a hologram performance with Snoop :(
holograms arent real :(
Didn't realise that ^^ was a direct quote
Damning indeed. Really sounds like he had no idea about capacity etc... when they did that interview.
when i saw that quote on facebook I assumed it was satire :-S
amazing
trolling is fun

Thinking on something people said up thread of who would buy a ticket from Bloc again
And it got me thinking that who would allow them to put one on?
For instance Mendip County Council have said that they will never grant a license to Glastonbury with Eavis as the licensee so they have to get someone of the calibre of Melvin Benn to do it as they're staking their professional reputation on adhering to the terms of the license.
After Friday, who would give Bloc a license for an event
What a palaver!
Here's how it went for me:
- Got there around 6pm, immediately shocked at the length of the queue. Having paid extra for Express we went down to where the express entrance was marked on the map, only to find no such thing. Eventually decided to leave the massive queue that had formed and go ask at the main entrance - good thing we did as it turned out Express people could go straight through so we didn't queue at all. Single sniffer dog smelling each person individually seemed a bit ridiculous, and the bag searches seemed to be taking way too long as well. Already obvious it was poorly organised.
- Once in we thought we'd have a wander and see what was going on. Already a queue for the Stubnitz, so decided to come back later. RA Hub seemingly not open yet with a huge queue. Express bar all the way on the other side of the 'gardens' - what kind of idiot thought that could qualify as an 'Express' bar? Also no express toilets to be seen anywhere. Girlfriend reported that the toilets were already disgusting and there was no toilet paper, despite it still only being 6.30pm. Bought some overpriced 'cocktails' at the Ableton bar. Very little alcohol, and stupidly sweet. No other cocktails available.
- No sign of Bloc tv - anyone see them? It was supposed to be by the Silo D thing...
- Went and caught the end of Steve Reich. Didn't really see enough to comment. Finished a lot earlier than scheduled, especially as the stage was seemingly not even open when he was due to start.
- Decided to queue for the Stubnitz as there was nothing else going on, got in after about 20 mins. Queue still fairly calm. Boat was awesome - plenty of space inside too. Both dancefloors quite empty. Saw some of Redinho and a bit of Midland, then decided to head out in good time for Amon Tobin.
- Huge queue outside the Stubnitz now, as well as a huge queue to get into the main arena.
- Grabbed some food (decent enough) and then decided to wait in line for Amon Tobin. Once we got to the front a steward came and shouted at us that we were in the wrong line and Express people go straight in. Why there was no-one going down the line saying that I don't know, and it was also never mentioned before the festival that express would get you to skip queues for stages.
- Amon Tobin was amazing.
- Queues apparently still crazy to get into the main arena. Next thing we really wanted to see was Snoop, but thought we would go catch some DMZ/Shackleton at the RA Hub first now we knew we could skip the queue with our Express tickets.
- Crazy scrum-style queue to get into the Hub now. Security hardly letting anyone in, lots of people at the edges jumping the barriers or pushing past. Security seemingly not bothered about stopping these people, instead concentrating on shouting at the people trying to queue to get in. Got pretty hectic for a bit - my girlfriend was getting properly squashed and starting to panic. Luckily they then let enough people in that we managed to get through.
- Once in it was obvious there was still loads of room for moer people. Was maybe 75% full. Sound pretty muddy, weren't really feeling it so decided to go back to Main Arena for Doom.
- Huge queues to get in Main Arena now. Went around to get in the Express entrance, only to be told to get lost by the security there. Spoke to several people, who all said different things (i.e. try over there, go over to the exit, etc). After 10 mins of frustration some people decided to push through the barrier, so we took the opportunity and used that as a distraction to sneak through ourselves at the other side.
- Doom was ok, just sat down at the back for a while to rest up ahead of Snoop.
- They started setting up Snoop's stage show, so we got a spot in the middle-ish and waited. And waited. And waited. Didn't seem that packed from where we were - we could certainly move around a bit if we wanted to - it wasn't crammed. Eventually (I guess around 12.30 or so?) someone from Bloc came out to say Snoop wouldnt perform, and the main stage was closed.
- Fearing a panic we though best to wait for the inevitable surge out to the other stages to die down and waited out the side by the toilets for a bit. By the time we left the main arena it was obvious the whole thing was shutting down. We had already heard the Stubnitz had been closed due to tilting (!?!) and the Hub was still rammed. Large line of police separating the main arenas from the entrance/bars area, but they let me through to get out coats. One steward we spoke to said a girl had been gang-raped in the main area, which seemed unlikely at the time, and now seems almost certainly untrue.
- Once we were out it was a matter of trying to navigate the chaos and get home. Missed the last DLR, so it was taxi or shuttle bus. Figured we would wait for the shuttle bus, but it got really chaotic for a while. Police/stewards really struggling to contain and organise the crowds.
- Went and chilled with some friends at a nearby hotel for an hour or so while the crowds died down, then went back to find it pretty much the same. Eventually got on a bus to liverpool st, made it home for 4.30.
This is probably super-long, but I thought it could be useful to get our experiences and perceptions out there to help piece together what happened over the night. Didn't make it to any replacement parties as we were knackered from the stresses of Friday, and figured everywhere would be rammed and didn't fancy the hassle.
If they're claiming that the shutdown was due to weather and not overcrowding
then I genuinely hope that the promoters never run an event again. It needed about half of the amount of people who'd actually managed to make it through the gates, forget the thousands left outside them - you can't expect the majority of people to stand like sardines outside the venues not watching music. That isn't what anyone pays for and it isn't fair. Clueless.
Amazing scenes really
What are the chances of ticket holders getting their cash back? Can't imagine they have insurance against making a massive balls up that is going to pay all the bands their fees and all the punters their ticket money back.
How does it work?
Hmm, I'm no legal expert so I'm sure someone else can answer this better
But I assume the hope is that there insurance covers emergency last minute cancellations - it's promised that all tickets will be refunded in the event of a cancellation, so they must have a contingency plan for this.
Otherwise, presumably they will go bankrupt and the creditors will have to use there assets to attempt to pay their debts back. If it gets to that, who knows who'll get paid or refunded.
*their
Suspect they are frantically trying to make this someone elses...
...fault. Can't imagine insurers cover it being a massive fuck up by the people they are insuring.
Usually when an event is cancelled its due to an external influence
this event seemed to bring it on it's self so it's a bit of a grey area.
Maybe that's the reason for the whole 'weather' claim then
I think it might be
I suggested that a bit further up this thread, either that or the police covering themselves because they approved a venue which was clearly undersized.
Exactly
They could have insurance against something going wrong (volcano, terrorist attack etc), or could try and sue someone else (security, the site etc) for not doing their bit and screwing it up, but I'm not sure you can get insurance against your own ineptitude - if that was the case.
I'll tell you whose legal team I wouldn't fancy going up against though - Snoop Dogg's. (do bands get paid in advance? I have no idea)
It's the police saying the issue was rain, though
the promoters haven't really said anything about why it happened, hopefully they'll be classier than to try and go along with this. I can only imagine the police said it out of either sheer laziness, or to try and spare the bliushes of the LPG, can't really see why it would be in their interests to protect Bloc.
As I said upthread, I imagine the promoters probably will be able to pay people back, they do still have everyone's money!
Puting my 'conspiracy theorist' hat on for a second
I do imagine it's got something to do with saving face, as that site is being used for the Olympic concerts apparently:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/2012/jul/08/bloc-promoters-venue-olympics-concert?newsfeed=true
Maybe
But it's a relatively minor event, one stage out of six across the city and I doubt LOCOG would lose much face for cancelling just one of the venues and moving the acts to other stages. I'd have thought it's much more likely it's got something to do with the large sums of money involved. Or perhaps even more likely that it was a very badly written / misquoted / misinformed press release and what they meant to say was that the reason they insisted on Saturday being cancelled was because of the weather - which was shocking and would have made a bad situation a lot worse.
The tents looked pretty fixed to me
so to say that it will be a totally different layout is amusing.
Don't forget that they have to pay all the artists, with no door and little bar revenue
Essentially, it's as if they hadn't sold a single ticket, but still gone ahead with the festival. Surely that would cripple any promoter? I'm thinking they will need insurance.
Maybe insurance will only pay out if it's due to bad weather?
It could be the line everyone's taking to avoid a massive hit. Ridiculous stuff, anyway.
Hmm...
I'm pretty sure the insurers won't pay out due to rain. It's hardly an unforseen circumstance.
Depending on the policy, insurers will pay out for exceptionally adverse weather,
if it's so bad that it leads to the cancellation of the event on the advice of the police, who have previously signed off an event before it takes place.
Are you saying the Met Police are complicit in an insurance scam?
INTERESTING.
I guess so
though you're making the assumption that they'd have to/want to pay the artists first, I don't see that necessarily takes precedence.
But insurance companies are wiley cunts even when it comes to legitimate claims; there is absolutely no way Bloc could erroneously persuade them that it had rained when it hadn't - it would probably just take one easily available meteorological report to disprove the idea.
pretty much spot on from here:
http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/EGLC/2012/7/6/DailyHistory.html?req_city=NA&req_state=NA&req_statename=NA
drizzly til just after 2 then dry for the rest of the day. It was gorgeous in the afternoon/early evening as well, if it had been raining it would have been horrific
yes, imagine if it had carried on to Saturday
with the weather we had then. Doesn't bear thinking about.
One of the policemen we were speaking to said apparently the organisers had hoped a large majority of people would be happy to chill and happily wait in the in-between bits of path
And that's exactly all it was, a path, where obviously there was ridiculous queues on no room to maneuver. Absolutely ludicrous, there was no sort of 'chill' area to begin with even if it hadn't had been momentously overpopulated.
And again as I said about clashes up there, there just wasn't enough for the amount of people.
I feel like one of the lucky few who actually saw 4 acts who I really enjoyed, and saw no stampedes or aggro whatsoever. I think the majority of people saw 1 act at best.
And I guess they calculated capacity to include the area near the cocktail barge thing
I didn't make it over there but presumably there was space for a few hundred people. But I can't imagine it was ever at full capacity there seeing how far from the stages it was. Which would have just added more people to queues for the stages. Of course, this should have been (might even have been) planned for.
There was a queue to get into the cocktail bar
I kid you not
Wow
Madness
people need Mai Tais
found this:
Print your own souvenir Bloc festival ticket thanks to CrowdSurge's handy complete lack of encryption: http://www.crowdsurge.com/et-TicketBarcodeBig.php?code=847042 (just change the code number in the URL to one you fancy...)
While this is grossly incompetent from CrowdSurge (apt name, eh?)
I really can't imagine *that* many people mocked up their own tickets... However it might help Bloc shift some of the responsibility/costs to CrowdSurge.
Yeah probably not that many people actually had a fake ticket
but maybe the few that did caused their ticket scanners to malfunction and the ticketing system to fall over?
Obviously there were still lots of other problems on site aside from the queues to get in though, so that still doesn't absolve Bloc.
Just a funny hack really
indeed probably not many people actually did, still in theory it's absurdly insecure for a ticket company...
One other point
I'm sure in many places they said that the Resident Advisor Hub stage was "The Hub Stage from Glastonbury" - I've not actually been to Glastonbury for years but the pictures I found of the Hub - http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/areas/shangri-la/the-hub http://www.pfevents.com/case-studies/client/glastonbury-festival-2010 - look very different to the relatively small tent they had at Bloc. Also - at what point do we think LPG told Bloc that the bridge to the floating cocktail bar wouldn't be there? It's still shown in the artists impressions on the LPG site http://londonpleasuregardens.com/site/the%20site/
Apparently they weren't able to finish The Hub, so just chucked up that tent instead
no idea about the bridge, but it did seem pretty key to helping spread people out around the site and may well have contributed to everyone being rammed into queues on the main side (nothing to do on the other side and a long-ish trek to get there)...
Didn't know that about the Hub
Was wondering about that actually, was re-reading the thread earlier and read that the Hub was supposedly going to hold 2800 people. Thought about pointing out another Bloc claim that turned out to be absolute bollocks, but no use kicking them when they're down.
KEEP DANCE MUSIC ILLEGAL
did NOT see this as a brightonb alt
They've set up an email address for people to submit information that might be useful to them in working out what went wrong
bloc2012@baselogic.net
Going to be fun reading for someone at Bloc.
And there's an updated statement on - www.blocweekend.com
It's a good step though
So many differing accounts across the board. I think a lot of how scarily busy it was depended on when you arrived.
Very true
I decided to leave before rush hour on public transport and got to the site at 5pm. Only had to queue about 15 - 20 minutes and walked straight on to the Stubnitz. When I bumped into a friend later I thought she was exaggerating when she said she had to wait two hours.
Might be stating the obvious
But surely looking through their FB page over the last few days will give them everything they need to know? Delaying information about refunds (which is all most people care about at this point) is going to frustrate people further.
Loving the people on the FB page who have now decided that people complaining about the event are "haters" - as if something that went that badly is beyond criticism because BLOC put on great events in the past. Its because of that very fact that I was so gutted about what happened on Friday night.
They can hardly forward a link
to the FB page to their insurers though. If they can't get an insurance payout, or sue someone, how do you proposed they pay everyone back. I reckon you are in for a loooooooooong wait to see that cash again.
there's so many tits on the fb
they probably just think itd be easier to get some vaguely sensible replies from people who take the time to email. Not some guy who think they owe him £700 etc.
A lot of ranting on fb
Probably posted straight after it went tits up when people were at their angriest.
I think it's a good idea. I'm gonna email my (hopefully) objective experience of events, for what it's worth.
I am expecting to wait a while for my refund, and am not expecting it to in full either
just arrived back in dublin
had a good weekend, but fucking hell what a waste. hyperdub night was really cool. fair play to kode 9 and everybody else involved.
I met some Irish people in the queue
...were you one of them?
maybe?
most likely actually!
refunds
they said they'd give refunds though didn't they?
have a lot of friends who were shafted because of this.
Interesting statement from Crowdsurge
http://thequietus.com/articles/09321-bloc-statement-ticketing-provider-crowdsurge
A few points to pick up on...
1. Bloc had set a daily capacity of 18,000 not the 15,000 they advertised on their site
2. 15,796 Friday tickets were sold - if we assume that these are only the paid for tickets and do not include artist passes / complimentary tickets / press passes etc then there were likely well in excess of 16,000 tickets distributed
3. The entrance gate was shut at 9.27pm by which point 8,000 people had been admitted (plus whoever went in the press and artists entrances) - I was inside the festival at this point and it was already very crowded with long queues for all the stages - that's with only 8,000 people on site
4. Scanners did not break and they don't suspect a high level of fraudulent tickets
So I think we're getting closer to the real answer of what happened - they basically sold way too many tickets for the capacity of the stages and were either working on an assumption that the stages could hold more people or that a very high proportion of festival attendees would not be in a stage at a given point.
The 30,000 capacity of the LPG site mentioned in the statement seems somewhat irrelevant when all of the music was inside - it's essentially like saying the area around Wembley Stadium can accommodate 250,000 people so let's sell them all tickets and hope they don't mind that only 90,000 at a time can watch the football.
Have people bothered to email them a lengthy account of what happened?
I feel like I ought to, but haven't had 2 hours to sit down and do so yet.
My wife's brother told me last night (who works directly opposite the site and in hindsight warned me a few weeks back that he feared the worst for the festival) that he hadn't seen work even begin on LPG until a few weeks after Christmas.
So in conclusion
The actual capacity was lower than Butlins.
Oh the ironing.
What's the capacity of Butlins?
Oh, I thought it was 7500
Might be 5000 after all. But y'know, 5000 without big ol' queues for everything.
It was so, so, so good last year
It's hard to get your head around just how badly it has gone for them this year.
I might have got the thing about the gates being closed wrong
The statement's confusing - what it basically says is that after 9.30pm no more tickets were scanned and personal searches ceased, but it doesn't say whether people continued to be admitted to the site - it kind of implies that they were.
They definitely were
My friends didn't get in until around 10pm.
Came here to say this
Got in at 10, my ticket wasn't scanned and the search wasn't exactly thorough.
It was impossible to get in anywhere by 9.30
There were huge queues for every stage apart from the Dome when I got in at 8, and the boat was closed by 10. The RA dome kept getting closed and reopened due to it being 'full' well before 10pm as well. So basically by the time 8,000 people were inside it was already too many.
It just means they were let in, but without the tickets being electronically scanned (and therefore `checked` against a register of legitimate/unused tickets)
Bloc were saying it was sold out, but they hadn't sold their ticketed capacity.
This is all very, very muddled.
They've gone bust
Yep
http://www.blocweekend.com/
Hmmmm
Unfortunately think that's the end for any refunds to people who paid for tickets. The banks will have first shout on any assets that remain.
Don't worry though, I imagine Bloc will probably have set up a new company in about a week...
With a snappy name like Willwal?
I hear 'ATP Concerts' is going spare
http://www.blocweekend.com/
Slim chance of refunds now
bollocks
I've logged a call with Crowdsurge re: refunds. I would've thought ticketing agencies would hold ticket revenue until after the event has (not) happened?
oh wait, just read the Crowdsurge statement
fucking fuck.
presumably in this case the main creditors get first dibs on any remaining cash
and we come last in the food chain. fucking brilliant.
balls
And there goes any chance of a refund
cunts.
oh ffs
not cool.
another article from the quietus
http://thequietus.com/articles/09308-bloc-festival-london-pleasure-gardens
The whole thing sounds like a massive clusterfuck. Hope those who did have tickets do get refunds
i've been writing an email
done about half of it and its taken me an hour. its ridiculous to think of all of the issues i had with the event as a whole, i think i have about 20 at the moment!
the message above from crowdsurge is interesting. as someone has commented, the point about the capacity to pleasure gardens is irrelevant and certainly i would have guessed that there were more than 8000 people in there by 9.30. however the fact that the main and RA stages werent even full and people were outside probably altered my perception of this...
dunno if i'll bother now
will probably be a waste of my time considering administration!
at least we know the people behind the festival have gotten what they deserve
although this is an alarmingly fast drop into administration
I imagine festivals generally run on fairly narrow margins
And a clusterfuck like this would bring down even the biggest.
On top of everything, the brand is worth zilch now. Why not go into administration and limit your own liability?
if the rumours about how much they paid Snoop Dogg for a set that didn't happen are true, it's pretty accurate
How much?
spurious I guess, but I was told it was £300k
Obviously the key point here is *I was told*, could be bollocks
Wow
He did seem like a pretty big act for a 15,000 people festival too.
300k
that's more than five Sam Ibbotts!
Courtesy of 6 Music News:
Just spoken to @BBCBusiness about #baselogic productions going into administration unlikely music fans will get refunds anytime soon. #bloc
Great
This whole thing has been one huge disappointment.
Mother fuckers.
This will make people think twice about giving money to Wilwall Ltd. in coming weeks.
i read
in the ATP thread that some ticket agencies guarantee you a refund if the event is cancelled? Wegottickets and some more?
The T&Cs from CrowdSurge guaranteed a refund in the event of cancellation too
I'll believe it when I see it.
if they're a member of STAR I think they do
I don't know much about it but Crowdsurge is a member:
http://www.star.org.uk/starmembers/full-members
I mentioned upthread that I logged a call with Crowdsurge so I'll keep everyone posted if I ever hear anything.
According to the STAR website they should do
What happens if the event is cancelled or rescheduled?
STAR members will ensure that you are either offered tickets for a rescheduled performance or that you receive a refund of at least the face value. You may not be able to reclaim postage costs if the tickets have already been sent to you.
But the Crowdsurge Ts&Cs says they won't:
8. Cancelled Events and Postponed Events
The Event Promoter reserves the right to cancel or postpone an event. Cancelled and/or postponed events will, at the Event Promoter's sole discretion, be rescheduled within twelve (12) months of the date of the original event, or a refund or ticket exchange will be offered. Sales Agent is not obligated to issue a refund except to the extent that the Event Promoter (1) instructs Sales Agent to issue a refund, and (2) provides Sales Agent with the ticket funds necessary to issue refunds. In order to receive a refund or an exchange that may be offered, you agree to comply with the Event Promoter's instructions or deadlines.
That's the problem with some many things that irk me these days
A lack of accountability.
Security (all 17 of them) were managed by a third party they say, refund statements are contradictory depending on the site you look at, LPG's details on the site differ from those of the council and from what Bloc signed up for, The London Assmebly pumped in £3 million of taxpayers cash to help out and I suspect everyone will come out skint, with all that cash 'weirdly' just vanishing.
this has been such a depressing week :(
Still, at least we've still got Chumbawhumba to rely on...
I'm still raw about that too :(
*Chumbleywhumbley
I suggest calling your credit card company
Assuming you booked by credit card. I just spoke with Amex and they said that they normally do refund you if an event is cancelled and the company goes into liquidation unless the Ts&Cs said no refund would be offered - of course the many different Ts&Cs don't help me prove my case, nor does the very small possibility that I will eventually get refunded by the administrators, but I figure it's worth a shot.
Times like this I wish I trusted myself with a credit card
:(
here
http://www.factmag.com/2012/07/11/bloc-goes-into-administration/
Update: FACT reader Luk Man Hon of record store Vinyl Pimp may have the answer, in terms of getting a refund:
“When a firm goes into administration, they look at how much money is left to pay off debtors, including ticket holders. If your money is still in the Bloc / Crowdsurge merchant bank (who accepted the payment online), then you should be able to get a full refund before it reaches their business bank.
“Basically, my advice is not to wait, call the bank immediately and initial a chargeback on the purchase. Your bank might tell you to wait 15 days for the company to refund, just refuse outright, telling them that Baselogic is attempting to refund all tickets, and you believe they don’t have the funds to do so.
“Just spoke with my bank, I am due to get my money back tonight. I asked for a chargeback on Monday.”
Can this only be done if the purchase was made with a cedit card?
no it's debit as well
i believe
I called Barclays about this on Monday
And they said they didn't know anything about chargebacks and never do them...!?
probably worth trying again
especially if you tried to sort out by phone, thsoe people always seem to get weirdly defensive if they don't know the answer to a question. Also Barclays are lying immoral cunts etc.
AWESOME
Thanks for this. Just tried my luck with the one ticket I bought for a mate and she thinks if you do this quickly, you may well indeed get most of your cash back (I suspect not the booking fees etc but hey...)
That particular department was closed within the Co-Op now but she said if it had been on the news PLUS the site had been saying they were issuing full refunds within 48 hours of the event then it should all be returned to me fine. When she asked if it was a credit or debit card transaction too, she said it may not make any difference anyhow.
So yeah... get in there quick people and see what they say!
Was it a particular department you asked for?
Nope, just phoned the phone number on the Co-Op online banking page and asked to talk to an operator
And I bought the ticket in May
When did you buy the ticket?
I bought mine months ago, I assume it's too late for me?
I bought mine mid-Jan but Lloyds are tryna sort it now
go go go!
Just got off the phone to Natwest
She seemed quite confident that I could get a refund on a "goods not receipted" basis. I have to fill out a form which they are sending to me now and attach any evidence I have (confirmation e mail, ticket print out etc) as well as proff of liquidation (so print off the Bloc homepage NOW in case they change it) - she said there's been loads of people asking about it and it should be fine. But yeah, RING YOUR BANK NOW
Do I just ring Halifax customer services then?!
Will have to pop out the office quickly, could really do with that hundred quid back!
Yep
I just rang the general number and got put through to retail queries, or something similar. By the sounds of it they'll have already had a lot of people asking about it.
my tickets were purchased on one of those pre-pay cards
so there's probably nil chance of seeing that money again :(
Anyone who succeeds with this please report back!
people read this
http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/sale-of-goods/your-rights-when-paying-by-credit-card/chargeback-on-credit-and-debit-cards/
as far as i can see there wont be some 48 hour time limit despite what people say...VISA is 120 days from the point u are aware of a problem
Just on the phone to Natwest now
Lady said she already had 2 people ask her
Chargebacks
When you get a refund on your credit card it doesn't come from the company thats taken the money & comes from an insurance. The Debit Card does not have this
I just rang HSBC
I paid for 2 tickets on my credit card. They've told me that I don't have 'card guard' or anything that would give me insurance. I thought that came with every credit card?
They have launched an investigation on the transaction and I'm expecting a call back tomorrow. I was told that they can refund my credit card, but if the company (Bloc) dispute it they will have to debit my account again.
Not quite as simple as I was hoping.
You're covered under the Credit Agreement
I remember HSBC having terrible customer service so it was probably someone trying to get a sale out of you.
could
be eticketing to blame?
http://www.efestivals.co.uk/news/12/120711bsdx.shtml
Is eticketing killing music?
Not sure I buy this
The over crowding issue wasn't that once we were on site we were getting crushed (though expecting 7000 people to be happy wandering around the site with 1 in 1 out in operation in tents is FOLLY), just the poor barrier and flow system getting in.
They had one sniffer dog, 4 small walkthrough points (all accessed by one even smaller one) and only a couple of scanners at the entrance seemingly meaning people were going in at a rate of about 1 every 2 or 3 minutes. But they carried on letting people into that holding pen for half hour more (with around 20% of that space kept open for Express ticket holders) without anyone really leaving after we started warning the guards we were getting crushed (I tweeted Bloc about it https://twitter.com/seansthomas/status/221326981910892544 ). A girl got on the shoulders of a guy next to me telling guards what was happening up in the corner of the pen ('People are getting crushed, let us in!'). I thought at first she may have been trying her luck but I don't think she was. A girl next to me who was about 4 foot 5 had a panic attack and was lifted out by a few blokes. Then the barriers got upended, people panicked and created a dangerous bottle neck at the aforementioned entrance point.
There were at the most 10 security at the entrances, gate corners at that point and none of them were talking to one another and cleverly overwhelmed. Then a bunch of people wearing mismatching high-vis jackets arrived and all the barriers just got moved aside with one guard shouting 'JUST GET IN!' meaning some of us handed over tickets, a few chancers grabbed weekend passes instead of day ones and some just waltzed in.
For what it's worth
I got a response from Crowdsurge which was just the original pre-liquidation statement that there would be more information on refunds in due course and referring me to the Bloc website. I replied saying that they've now gone into administration and just got this: "Further information will be given shortly with regards to refunds."
I still can't believe in this day and age we were all fooled by some flashy computer-generated images of an urban wonderland
While someone cuts corners and runs away with £3m of the tax payers money. It's all a bit 'Springfield Monorail'.
is there any chance
the track may bend?....
The Pleasure Gardens has opened venues in Brockway, Ogdenville and North Haverbrook...
And boy did it put them on the map
http://oi49.tinypic.com/23hk5ci.jpg
Indeeeeeed...
It seemed to good to be true, and alas so it proved to be :(
i call the big one bitey.
:D
monoraiiiiiilllllllll............Doh!
one of the worst things about this whole mess
is that it does rather make the idea of a lot of these new/upcoming small boutique/local type fests and stuff being run by smaller promoters look really bad. imagine if next year someone says to you "hey let's go to that new fest in London its only £100 and its run by these young guys.." i mean you'd give it short shrift wouldn't you?
i dunno...
ones that are run this badly are massively in the minority.
I know what you mean.
With this and the ATP debacle, a day ticket for Reading, safe in the knowledge it will happen, and they aren't going to move the date or something, suddenly seems like a good idea.
I might exclusively buy tickets for Glastonbury in the future
seems like the only true safe bet
Yeah I'd never overlook them entirely
And I've been pretty forgiving about lots I've gone to over the years.
But after this whole mess, I'd definitely think twice.
Certainly in London
But I think 'proceed with caution' is the best advice now, as the majority of the festivals are really poor. Sound issues, overcrowding, overpriced food and beer, and a lack of atmosphere at almost every event.
Travelling all the way to Minehead or wherever >>> Being stuck in a clusterfuck on your own doorstep.
Hmmm...
So I bought a Friday day ticket off a guy via Paypal. What are the chances of me seeing that money back?! Would it be taking the piss if I opened a dispute via Paypal?
The person you
did the transaction with completed their side of the deal, unless he gets a refund and is very honest I fear you are stuffed.
Why even ask?
surely you know the answer to this question is going to be no, it'd be like getting a refund from Game because the game you baught off of your friend Tony doesn't play properly.
I've bought tickets
for Eastern Electrics in North Greenwich on the 4th Aug.
Gonna be the saaaame shit, son.
yeah. I was thinking about going to this, and then I remembered Bloc
though to be fair the whole thing is nowhere near as ambitious sounding.
Nah I think EE will be fine
It was originally 16,000 capacity in Clapham but has been scaled down to 10,000 in Greenwhich with, I believe, the same amount of artists and tents. So it should mean fewer people spread over the same size tents (again I assume it's tents).
Also I only paid £19.92 for my ticket so I will be nowhere near as pissed off if I don't get my money back.
Interesting article on possible knock-on effects
http://www.thecmuwebsite.com/article/bloc-administration-what-might-it-mean-for-the-uk-live-sector/
Anybody book this through Nationwide?
yep
I paid with a debit card about a week before the festival itself.
You need to go into a branch and ask for a Visa Dispute Form. Put down all your account details, and explain why you're asking for a refund: if you have the date you paid for your tickets, how much, and to whom (if direct from Bloc then it should appear on your account statement as Blocshop) put that down as well.
Explain about the festival getting cancelled, Baselogic going under, etc. It also says that they can only do a chargeback once you've exhausted all possible remedies with the vendor, so I also mentioned that we'd been given no opportunity to claim refunds directly.
Once the form's complete, the branch staff should be able to fax it straight to head office for processing, and you should get an acknowledgement / response within 7 - 10 working days.
It seems like a lot of people are doing this: I was the 3rd person today in my branch.
cheers!
I got one of those visa dispute forms today. Only problem is my mate bought it for me via his nationwide credit card because he owed me money. Don't really want to have to drag him through all this. Ah well.
if it's a credit card
then you're actually in a better position than me: credit card providers are obliged to refund credit card purchases over £100 under section 75 of (i think) the consumer credit act, so you can just claim the money back through that.
unlike with chargeback, under section 75 banks are legally obliged to refund you, then chase the money at the other end. there are some useful links upthread, or just google section 75 credit card protection...
yeah had a brief look into that yesterday
my problem at the minute is more the logistics of getting my mate to do it for me as he seems to be very lethargic and confused about the whole situation. Which is weird considering he once worked for Nationwide.
So I got a call back from HSBC today
And they have told me that because the Police issued the statement saying it was called off due to the rain they are not going to refund me. I argued but couldn't remember the Consumer Credit Act section 75 thing exactly. The woman on the phone just kept saying "contact the retailer" and obviously I pointed out that they were in administration. She said HSBC wouldn't do anything until the administrators said there was definitely no chance of refunds.
Where do I stand here? Should I be covered, regardless of the police statement, by that Credit Act?
Absolutely fuming.
Maybe we should wait and see what the rest of us get as a response
Then we might learn some secret phrase we need to recite to get it actioned.
Failing that, this seems like the perfect kind of thing to write to The Guardian's Money section about in the column where they pursue disputes for consumers and help them out.
Don't
do it over the phone. Write a letter and put in all the subsequnt statements from the police saying that it was due from overcrowding.
well they said wait until there is definitely no chance of refunds
so it looks like you'll have to do that...
Wow
Crowdsurge are being gits: from efestivals forums
'This is a Crowdsurge ticket URL:-
http://www.crowdsurge.com/et-TicketBarcodeBig.php?code=847042
If you increment the number at the end, you can get the next barcode and then the next barcode, and then the next barcode.
Try it for yourself. Please!! This has just got horribly legal, and eFestivals might need all the witnesses it can get to defend our suggestion that there were issues with the ticketing system which contributed towards the cancellation of Bloc.
eFestivals is going to stand its ground with this. I very much hope that that decision does not cause the end of eFestivals.'
and
'In response to the threat of legal action from Crowdsurge that I've recieved this morning....
Quote
Thank you for your letter. We have considered its contents, and have reviewed our article.
We believe that there is enough evidence to substantiate the suggestion (note: a suggestion, not a firmly stated fact) that there might have been some issues with the Crowdsurge ticketing system which ultimately led to the cancellation of this event.
I draw your attention to the following URL on the Crowdsurge ticketing system, which is URL that provides a barcode for a purchased ticket:-
http://www.crowdsurg...php?code=847042
I suggest that you load the URL yourself, and then increment the number at the end of the URL by one. You will see that a new barcode is created, one which the user is not entitled to have. I of course retain evidence of this being able to happen to produce to a court if need be.
If you do not prove this flaw to yourself on receipt of this email, I believe that it might be regarded as a negligence in investigating this matter.
This flaw in the Crowdsurge ticketing system allows any person to self-generate extra tickets for themselves.
Whether or not the electronic system at the gates allowed a person to enter with one of these fraudulently generated barcodes I cannot say, but the very fact they could be fraudulently created is likely to have led to people arriving at the event with these fraudulently generated barcodes from the Crowdsurge system, and so cause too many people to try to enter the event.
As such, we believe that our article has enough of a basis in fact for the suggestion of an issue with the Crowdsurge ticketing system to stand up to scrutiny, and so the article will not be removed.
Regarding the source who contacted us, we cannot give you a name. We were telephoned anonymously.
You are of course within your rights to pursue legal action, and if you were to be successful you would succeed in forcing NRG Internet Ltd into administration. However, I wish to draw to your attention that NRG Internet Ltd has few assets - and that is the same for me personally - and so it is extremely likely that the costs of any legal action put against NRG Internet Ltd or myself would not succeed in being recovered.
I reserve the right to make public this response to your letter, so that there are numerous witnesses to the flaw in the Crowdsurge ticketing system which I outline above.'
don't understand this post. what efests article are you referencing?

total cunts
If I'm going down, your coming with me?
Bunch of inept cunts. I hope CrowdSurge get what's coming to them.
So, people can create dummy barcodes
But they won't be accepted when scanned at the gate.
So loads of people did this, expected to get in, and caused Bloc to close down.
This is rubbish. I don't believe this was a contributing factor for a second. The whole dummy barcodes things is a red herring in my opinion.
Here's some more info on refunds...
If you purchased tickets via credit card (I'll cover debit cards later), you have two options:
- Chargeback
- A claim for breach of contract under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974.
In all cases, you should first ask your bank to process a chargeback against the Bloc ticket transaction. This is a scheme whereby the bank makes a claim through Visa or Mastercard and you recieve an instant credit for the disputed transaction.
Visa or Mastercard ask the retailer's bank to defend the chargeback within the next 60 days or so. In the case of Bloc this should be hard to do, the event was cancelled. As long as this happens, the credit will stay on your account and that's it.
One thing to keep in mind, Chargebacks are time dependent, in that, if you want to claim for "Goods/Services not received" when it relates to a concert/festival you usually have around 180 days from the date of the event.
In the case mentioned above where HSBC refused the section 75 claim due to the Met statement, you should reply and ask them to process a chargeback. If the bank has the opportunity to do this, it would be considered good practice for it to do so and a customer should not be disadvantaged because a bank does not make them aware of the possibility of a chargeback!
If you purchased on a debit card, only a chargeback is possible. But unfortunately, the rules are different and there is less protection. But you should still make the request. If the bank refuses, ask it why it refused. With a debit card, you won't be able to claim under section 75 as this only applies to credit accounts (in this case credit cards).
In all cases, if you do not recieve a refund of the Bloc ticket transaction, it would be best to make a formal complaint in writing. The bank has 8 weeks to resolve it to your satisfaction. If it doesn't resolve it, you can go the Financial Ombudsman Service who can consider the matter. If you explain your intention to take it to the Ombudsman then the bank may just give you a refund anyway.
Thanks for taking the time to explain
Has anyone had any luck in getting money back? By any method?
Credit cards look like s75 should apply. I (like most people probably) paid with a debit card, so especially interested in that.
Amex have refunded one of my purchases
Which was for one day ticket at £60. However they've asked for more evidence before they refund my larger purchase of 2 weekend and 2 day tickets. I guess they have a value limit before they issue refunds.
I just got my money back via Smile
Whole amount. Paid by debit card. However, they have said that if the retailer claims the transaction was genuine they would have to review it (which I assume means take it back again!) The transaction was genuine they just didn't deliver the goods. So don't know how that's going to work out.
Anyway, any success for anyone else?
that's great news
waiting to hear from the Co-op myself
my friend who bought us two Saturday tickets on his VISA debit card
managed to get a refund from his bank via 'Chargeback' ... apparently if you bought a Saturday ticket you should be ok, but for Friday/Weekend tickets you're less likely to get a refund because it partially went ahead
My weekend ticket was refunded
Chargeback does work!
has anyone from up there ^ contacting their bank
actually got their money back yet?
if so, are you getting back your booking fee too?
I'm asking for the whole transaction to be refunded so, yes.
i had a friend who has got their money back via paypal
dont know the ins and outs of it tho.
i am doing it via barclays, and if anyone has had any different experience to this, then please let me know.
i rang them up and spoke to debit card services. They said that i need to complete a form to run through the chargeback process. It was sent to me yesterday and i dont know if i have it yet. It could apparently be faxed to me as well, however i didnt want it sending to my work. I will need to send this back and they will process the request
I went into my bank today; their first response was to put me through to the debit card services over the phone. I said that i had spoken to them and they have sent me a form. Was told that they cannot do any different in the branch to what was mentioned above.
I was told that as the festival has gone into administration they would be reasonably confident of a refund. It will take 10-12 days for them to process my forms when sending them back tho :( I will be sending a formal letter which i saw on the money saving expert website as well as a printoff of the bloc website saying that they are in administration and the email i received confirming it was cancelled.
I hope it works but i want the money now! I'm skint!!!!
A few people on Twitter who are with Lloyds TSB are saying they have got their money back
:D
http://tonkawrdm.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/wrdm-bloc-2012.html
well that's just brilliant
Funny
and also very depressing
Have they deleted their Facebook page?
...nope?
Can you not see this?
https://www.facebook.com/blocwknd
Weird
It wasn't showing up for me this morning - ignore me!
pleasure gardens might be shutting down
this is a very vague rumour so don't read too much into it, but i've heard that the plan is to shut the pleasure gardens down for good in a month or two.
a mate works for a company who had been contracted to do some work there in a few months' time, but they've apparently been told not to worry about planning for it, as the whole venue is likely to have been closed by then.
So thats £5million funding gone
Plus the £3million from the government / local council.
Hmmm... good value that then.
Someone must have pocketed some serious cash
£8m on a dome and a tent.
such a shame if thats true :(
the plans they had for it looked so amazing, even if they did over-stretch themselves.
To me it seems like they've taken everyone for a ride
It was such an incredibly poor site that I can't help but feel angry at them... Far more so than Bloc, who I have a fair amount of sympathy for.
Yeah didn't mean to this that, but reply to it with something much like what you said
Kinda agree. We may never know but the site is just not they said it'd be.
unbelievable
Heh
Would be a suitably ridiculous end to this unmitigated clusterfuck. Now the disappointment's starting to wear off I can't help but feel for everyone who's planned both the festival and the LPG, but they really were trying to run before they walked.
I dunno
I mean, the forgiving part of me thinks: is the venue really unsalvageable? Clearly it wasn't finished - and presumably still isn't - and clearly this has been an absolute PR disaster, but if they can build the venue they claimed they were going to build and sort out the logistics that seems rather cheaper than just abandoning it...
Pump more money into a sinking ship?
If they can finish it off their own back, and turn it into a success then fair play to them.
Otherwise, the negative PR is of such an extent that they'll struggle to attract artists and punters, and it seems foolhardy to keep spending on something SO far away from the finished article.
I see what you're saying
I just think that unless there's some abiding reason about why a finished version would NEVER WORK - and there might be one, for health and safety or capacity reasons, say - then they might as well finish the thing and see how it goes, maybe? It just felt to me that the issues with the venue were surmountable. I agree though, we're in very expensive territory.
I agree with this
There doesn't seem to be any logic in not trying it as a 7,500 capacity venue rather than cutting losses altogether and abandoning it because it's not a 15,000 venue.
I wrote on LPG's Facebook wall saying that I was really really really happy to hear they'd be shutting down
They deleted my post and now it seems no-one can comment on their page anymore. Or at least I can't
VICTORY
appears to just be me but still, looks like they are on the ropes if they're scrambling to cover this up
chins :)
I like that they have a Bloc photo album
With lots of nice sunny photos and positive comments about how great the day is going to be https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.334617913284935.79440.122481334498595&type=1
i've got the ability to comment
should i want to.
they've barred you, bro.
I'm glad
the fact that they're responding to these kind of allegations by barring me shows it's gonna tank (I hope)
If I was these guys I'd jump ship pronto

Looks like a decent event, but pretty sure for dance music fans it'll be a case of once bitten, twice FUCK THE FUCK OFF LONDON PLEASURE CUNTS.
Yeah I realised I was 'attending' this on Facebook the other day
Saw the location and was promptly fuming.
i love Four Tet and like secretsundaze
But I'm not going unless they change the venue. I don't want LPG making even the tiniest bit of cash from me after what they've done to Bloc and everyone who bought tickets
absolute shitcunts
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnHyB9KzQvs
still annoyed about this
Hang on, hang on...
Why are we all hatin' on LPG? I thought the likely problem was Bloc overselling? Or are we thinking that LPG overstated the capacity? Or have I missed something?
I think
it was that everyone involved was not very good at their job. Equal blame for all.
I think LPG have a part to blame in the whole thing
http://www.bdonline.co.uk/news/architects-blame-riba-for-olympic-fringe-%E2%80%98nightmare%E2%80%99/5039555.article
what's RIBA?
Royal Institute of British Architects
Can't quite see how the RIBA could be blamed for any of that, to be honest.
The latest from Crowdsurge
Not surprisingly this was the response I got to my request for an update on refunds...
"Unfortunately we are currently awaiting further information from Bloc regarding the refund process, as soon as we receive further information we will be contacting all customers. We realise how frustrating this has been and thank you for your patience"
I predict they'll be waiting a long time.
I was also kind of surprised to see that the capacity for the BT River of Music event this weekend at LPG is once again 17,000 people - do we think they've learnt their lesson? http://londonpleasuregardens.com/site/2012/07/20/a-message-from-the-bt-river-of-music-team/
yeah but they know for absolute certain 17k wouldn't turn up for that
even on a gorgeous day, without all of last month's teething problems AND featuring a special guest appearance from Nelson Mandela playing the hits of KRS One, they'd struggle to reach half capacity
Except
They're reporting the Saturday of River of Music as sold out. Granted, as the tickets were free (in practice a £3 booking fee) there'll be some no-shows, but I'd still expect in the region of 15,000.
It looks like it's all on one open air stage, so there should be fewer problems with queueing/congestion once on the site, but it could still be interesting trying to get in.
ahhhhh didn't realise tickets were free
snide comment retracted
So
the BT River of Music thing at London Pleasure Gardens was all fine. Everything ran smoothly (ish - change-overs took a long time, meaning it started to overrun and sets were cut a bit short), no over-crowding or bottlenecks, and the sound-system was decent.
BUT: it's really hard to see where the 3 million quid's gone. It was basically a large open area covered in gravel. There were a couple of shack-type buildings and some pretty poor street-art type stuff. Still looks a long, long way from the artist mock-ups.
straight into a Cayman Islands holding account
*at least 8 million.
Got a full refund from Natwest yesterday
ahh lush!
i sent my forms back to them on tuesday. how long did it take them to finalise it? and did they inform you were getting the money back or just chuck it straight into your account?
I faxed everything over last Friday
so a week in total. They just put it in my account, I assume they'll be a letter or something shortly.
sweet
that is promising indeed. is that from using a debit card, too?
Yep, debit card.
If you don't mind me asking
What info did you send them?
HSBC have finally sent me a form to fill in to get a chargeback. I have to send back all the "evidence" that I have.
I sent
I supplied
*My bank statement from with the transaction to Bloc
*Booking confirmation
*The tickets that were sent to me on Thursday June 28th 2012
*The e-mail that was sent to ticket holders on the morning of July 7th explaining that the event was cancelled due to “crowd safety concerns”
*The e-mail received on July 8th explaining that refund information from Baselogic should be received shortly.
*The statement from Crowdsurge on Wednesday July 11th stating that they currently hold no monies booked through the Bloc website.
*A Print Screen of the Bloc website on Wednesday July 11th, stating they had gone into voluntarily administration as well as a print out of the same page.
*Crowdsurge’s terms and conditions.
I probably went a bit overboard but didn't want to take any chances. Good luck!
cheers
Had most of that stuff already, added a couple from your list as well.
Fingers crossed!
full refund, yo
THE SYSTEM WORKS
Anyone had any luck with Halifax?
Just got a full refund....
HSBC. good as gold they are
really?
they've been really awkward with me before they finally sent the forms, as I said before.
I went in to my local branch and had a meeting with an adviser
who was really helpful. I bought all email print outs, receipts, etc with me and filled in that form then and there. Everything was sent off at the same time, this was a week ago. Refund in my bank today.
Ok, with a bit of luck I'll have a refund in 7 days then
got a refund from Nationwide
Having bought on a debit card. Their letter says that they reserve the right to take the money back, though, if they can't recover the debt themselves from Baselogic / the administrators.
Would much rather have them pursue it than me, though... plus I assume they will bundle up all their customers' claims together, which would hopefully give them more clout when it comes to dividing up Baselogic's assets.
i'm with Barclays
Still waiting......................(8 days after faxing the forms to them) :(
Oh, the joy of second hand tickets
Well done to everyone who has got a refund though! I fear many wont have bothered, or known the right procedures to go about it, but it's good to see the DiS contingent getting their monies. Good luck for the rest of you, only right that they pay for it!
the guy I bought your ticket off said he was gonna try and sort it out for you
so hang tight.
however, as it was a day ticket and under £100 it may complicate the matter...
Oh cheers man
It was a weekend ticket (priced at £99) actually, so should be the same as getting yours back.
So he would also get money back too if he did manage it. Obviously I'm not holding out too much hope, but if he was to help a brother out I'd be eternally grateful.
oh was it? shit yeah, of course
this guy is really sound, it would be very very unlike him to dash with the cash
I'll pop him a message now
^ SCROTUM sorted me out a refund
Another success story :)
Hope everyone else gets their $$.
Chargeback received this morning from HSBC
Good luck everyone else!
excellent
hoping to hear from Natwest this week re: our claim..
Congrats
All I've had from HSBC is a request for proof of payment, which seems a bit odd as they surely have access to that kind of thing.
Anyway going to send everything I have and hope for the best!
Good to see that they're handling each request consistently.
They had it coming.
still waiting for a response from the Co-op
hopefully this week.
have you heard anything vamos?
Nothing yet no
Chargeback recieved from Natwest!
heard nothing from Capital One (Mastercard)
got a letter saying it takes up to 35 days to process though
now got a letter saying they've put the money in dispute
meaning I don't pay any interest on it, etc...
chargeback from Natwest received this morning
bonza
Amex just confirmed my refund
The system works.

“For secretsundaze Go Bang! we need to be absolutely sure that our fans get the event they deserve. After much consideration, we have decided that an alternative venue is the best choice.”
wiser words never said
London Pleasure Gardens now in administration, apparently
I have this on reasonable authority but can't confirm it at this time.
Yeah I've heard that they have to honour
the bookings they've already made but are not booking anything else.
I had to walk through the site on my way home from an Olympic event the other day. There was still workmen on site doing stuff and without the stages / boat that Bloc had it looked very bleak indeed.
*gets out miniature violin*
yup
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-19114930
That only leaves Crowdsurge then
Hopefully they'll go under soon as well
the blog of the LPG's former creative director
makes for interesting / awful reading:
http://debsarmstrong.blogspot.co.uk/
It's full of self-congratulatory bibble, glosses over all the issues, paints everyone involved as a bunch of tragic heros struggling blamelessly against insurmountable odds. No mention anywhere of all the people who've been left out of pocket.
If the people in charge of it were really this detached from reality, it's no wonder the whole thing fell apart.
I like when she's like *Has no one been to a festival site before?*
After they spent a year telling people it was going to be the complete antithesis of a festival site
this person sounds massively punchable
I have no sympathy for them after reading that
£217.80
refunded from the Co-Op for 2 weekend passes and booking fees.
Amazing, the system works!
“Mud, screws and leaking loos”: a London Pleasure Gardens employee on Bloc’s collapse and going unpaid

got my money back
thanks Capital One / Mastercard!
It's all the Olympics fault
Seems to be the rather curious line that Newham Council are taking, this is the first statement I've seen from them related to LPG closing along with another venue funded under the same scheme - http://www.architectsjournal.co.uk/news/daily-news/doors-close-on-another-newham-pop-up/8634227.article
They claim - "Both Industri[us] and the London Pleasure Gardens have been a victim of the success of Games organisers in getting visitors to and from the ExCel centre so efficiently."
Any business model which was predicated on visitors only using the facility because the queue for the DLR was too long should have been challenged a very long time ago.
Chargeback came through this morning
And it was bought on debit card many many months before the event. Have faith, people (just not in festival organisers).
Was the best part of
£600, too.
Oh yeah, forgot the obligatory `the system works` post after getting my chargeback a week or so ago
thx to those who forged the path / provided the know-how.
Are we assuming
that the findings of the "investigation" they were carrying out have all but vanished?
Are we assuming
there was ever an actual investigation (rather than a straight up administration wrap-up job)?
An update from BLOC
"Before anything else, we need to explain why it’s taken us so long to be in touch with you all following Bloc 2012.
On Tuesday 10 July 2012, after the cancellation of the festival, we voluntarily placed the company we have run since 2006, Baselogic Productions Ltd, into administration.
This meant a team of insolvency professionals took charge of the company in order to investigate what happened, and deal with the fallout in the fairest way possible. In our case, the administrator was Jamie Playford of Parker Andrews.
The advice we received was to hang back from all public conversations about the festival as they worked in the background to make their enquiries and ascertain the status of refunds. Anything we said publicly could have compromised their efforts and made it harder for this to happen. As much as we wanted to reach out to everyone, we were told time and again that ultimately it would only harm this process, so we’ve kept quiet.
It’s been painful to watch everything develop and not be able to comment, but ultimately it was the best thing as now we and Parker Andrews are in a position to explain what happened as far as we understand it, and publish information on refunds. We’re sorry for our silence but it was unavoidable given the circumstances.
First of all, some background information on how we got to this point.
Our company, Baselogic Productions Ltd was a client of London Pleasure Gardens Ltd, hiring the venue to operate Bloc. The license was held by London Pleasure Gardens Ltd for events of this kind for between 12,000 and 25,000 people.
At 23:45 on Friday 6th July, we took the decision to cancel the festival midway through its first night, owing to concerns for crowd safety.
We are very grateful to the Metropolitan Police for their support in assisting with the evacuation but we would also like to make it clear that, contrary to some reports, it was our decision to cancel the event.
It’s a testament to the character of the people at Bloc that the evacuation was so peaceful and calm. We would like to thank you all for this.
There has been a lot of online chatter regarding ticketing and admissions at the festival.
As already confirmed in a statement by Crowdsurge, who retailed tickets for the event, our total sales for Friday 6th July were 15,786. We took tickets off sale two days in advance and it is accepted by all concerned that we did not oversell the event.
However, we did experience problems with the management of the admission control systems. The area that was set aside for queuing before tickets were checked became overcrowded at around 21:00. This began to put potentially dangerous pressure on the searching lanes leading into the festival.
At 21:27, following a breach of these lanes, ticket scanning was suspended to ease the pressure. Comprehensive ticket scanning was not properly resumed beyond this point. Knowledge of the suspension of scanning combined with ticket touting enabled people to gain
entry to the event without having purchased a ticket from our website. We’ll never know exactly how many people this was.
The state of the venue also attracted a lot of attention online and in the press.
It is no secret that there were serious delays associated with the building of the London Pleasure Gardens site, leading to non-completion of groundwork, venues and general infrastructure.
There is no doubt that these delays severely compromised our efforts to deliver a successful production.
In the run up to Bloc, much of the site remained unfinished, inaccessible or just closed altogether. For instance, the bridge connecting the main gate to the northwest of the site was never built and the grass amphitheatre for our planned Silo D cinema was fenced-off.
Despite our frequent requests for an up-to-date build schedule, it was confirmed just two weeks before the festival that ‘The Hub’, a 2,800 capacity high-spec venue that we had contracted to host one of our main stages, was not going to be ready for us to use. Furthermore, the large area in the south east of the site where it was to be built remained shut so that construction works could be completed in time for the Olympic period.
While failures in admission control contributed to an increase in overall numbers of people at the event, missing infrastructure and venues meant that much of the festival ended up focused in the northeast corner of the otherwise massive 60,000 square metre site. Most people chose to congregate there causing unanticipated overcrowding which ultimately led to our safety concerns.
When the extent of the missing infrastructure was revealed, we considered our options. London Pleasure Gardens was clearly a long way from the ‘riverside arts and entertainment destination’ that we had hired but our relatively small company lacked the resources to cover the costs associated with a postponement or cancellation of the festival or a legal action against the venue.
Since Bloc, London Pleasure Gardens Ltd has also gone into administration and the site is now closed. The venue had originally seemed like the perfect new home for Bloc so we’re really sorry that everyone was let down. All of you who bought tickets, travelled from afar and have supported us through many years of festivals, and parties and clubs before that, deserved better.
Following five successful editions of the Bloc festival, this year we could not deliver what we had planned - we cannot stress enough how sorry we are for this. We’ve learned from these experiences and have humbly taken on board the criticisms leveled at us.
At the links below there is more information from Parker Andrews and various documents available to download to help you claim your refund. Please print off the form, fill in the relevant information and post it to the bank that issued the card you used to buy your ticket. Many people have already received a refund via this method. If you have yet to claim yours, this is the best way to do it.
We hope that this goes some way to explaining what happened, and the information on refunds below goes some way to making good on the situation.
Thanks to those of you who have shown love and support, particularly over the last two months, and we hope to be in touch with you again soon.
Bloc x"
that's a very well written and honest statement, to be fair
Interview on RA too
http://www.residentadvisor.net/news.aspx?id=17554
Nice to finally have an apology
But there's still some issues there...
`We took tickets off sale two days in advance and it is accepted by all concerned that we did not oversell the event.`
`Knowledge of the suspension of scanning combined with ticket touting enabled people to gain entry to the event without having purchased a ticket from our website. We’ll never know exactly how many people this was.`
It WAS oversold for the facilities that they had available to them (you can't work with what you were promised, but doesn't exist), and it's obvious that thousands of people didn't enter the site fraudulently.
Would be nice if this had drawn a line under the bullshit tbh.
nah they didn't do the first bit
i bought on saturday ticket on the friday
Also
they fail to comment on the lack of staff or at least staff who what the hell was going on.
Anyway I hope everyone can finally get their cash back if they haven't already done so.
My thoughts exactly
They still seem to be in a state of denial - I'm sure the lack of the actual Hub stage was a factor, as was putting the two main arenas slap bang next to each other, and the fact that a lot of the site was fenced off, but it's hard to see that even if that hadn't happened that there would have been enough capacity across all the venues. Plus they knew about all of these things in advance and continued to sell tickets. And none of those changes to the site layout caused the massive queue to build up outside, that was simply down to not employing enough staff on the gate.
But to given them some credit, at least they've come out with this statement and provided guidance on the charge back procedure, I really wasn't expecting to hear anything more from them.
They've just posted a link
to a new website on their FB page. The comments are predictably vitriolic
