While not a totally vintage year I thought 2011
was pretty awesome for Hip-Hop. I found most of the big mainstream albums kinda disappointing but the underground stuff from the likes of Lil' B, Main Attrakionz/Green Ova, ASAP, DJ Quick etc. was consistently amazing.
What are the releases everyones looking forward to this year? I haven't been keeping up.

I made a thread having not seen this one.
going to post this video AGAIN for the third time today http://youtu.be/piH92jztV0k (album is great) . To be honest only really given Hip-Hop it's deserved time in the last while and I am very happy that I had.
-
Man, not sure.
I kind of just take it week by week, haven't really looked at an upcoming releases list in over a year.
2011 was pretty cool, great for singles and random album cuts but not too many front to back releases that I can fully stamp. Even my favorite release (Quik) is a lower tier release in his catalog and has a couple stinkers.
I'm still going to do a 2011 year end thread with my favorite stuff with links and such. Still narrowing my lists down.
-
That beat kinda reminds me of Here I Come:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ys9owWbBH8
Which is still one of my favorite Roots tracks, even though I hear it almost daily as the theme music for the Jimmy Fallon show.
-
Yeah, good list.
Some of those will be on mine.
-
The DMT Sessions are impressive.
as is his earlier stuff http://youtu.be/A7sp63P3NLI A good bit before oddfuture made horrorcore popular.
-
Bro Lynch has been at it for years.
This was a pretty good release for him. Get Season of da Siccness if you want some gnarly ish.
-
Still an all time jam:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DujH8ZmeYUo
I've had that whole song memorized since I was a young'n. That whole album actually, more or less. Dude was my generations OddFuture, minus the hype.
skellywager this'd this -
Worst rap name ever, haha.
And thats saying something.
Man this sounds like its straight from the 90s southern underground.
-
Agreed on both points haha
I'm enjoying what I've heard on the youtube though. Maybe he's onto sommat we'll have to wait and see.
-
Detox!
is becoming my stock answer to anything happening in the future. The DOOM / Ghostface record is probably the one I'm most keen to hear, especially after hearing the tracks they put out. I'm curious about what the Goodie Mob record might sound like now Cee-Lo has his mojo, Big Boi and Rick Ross are sure not to disappoint, Tyler the Creator is possibly facing a make or break release whilst releases from DMX, Busta Rhymes and Mary J could go either way.
Yeah, I like the more mainstream hip-hop, although this could be the year that I go more underground. I agree the mainstream was lame this year although can someone please please agree with me that The Game album wasn't as bad as everyone panned it as? -
Yeah I really like it
Never heard of him, just following the trail of producers that do stuff for people like Main Attrakionz, Lil B, ASAP Rocky, Spaceghostpurp, etc. Which Beautiful Lou has done, same with Nem270 and Clams Casino who is the most known of thew lot right now really. They seem to work with some good young MCs that are willing to go for an odd beat.
-
Yeah Lil B raps over I'm God doesn't he. Clams Casino make some lovely music
Would like to hear more from Onra next year and Teebs....they are capable of some lovely beats.
-
Got on a serious trail from listening to the Chrome Children compilations
then everything that Peanut Butter Wolf was involved in....it's endless the relationships in hip-hop. Seems like every fucker knows eachother.

Love that K.R.I.T. track
Have to admit I was a little disappointed by the lack of trunk bangers on this year's record. But more than made up for by that remix of Country Shit with Ludacris & Bun B
-
they're my fave hip-hop group from last year
http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4281286
They have loads of quality free mixtapes
-
not feeling evian christ yet
not sure how they've had so much blog love this year so far, I guesst hings are kind of slow this time of the year. At the mo EC sounds like a bad boring rigid post-dubstep version of well dubstep with some hip-hop samples chucked on top. But I keep seeing him in hip-hop threads on forums somehow haha. The tracks don't seem to go anywhere yet they're just there. The producer needs more time to settle into it by the sounds of things, sounds liek sketches to my ears. Not gonna write them off just yet it could get better.
-
def not that, seems like something more 90s
cool song doe

Gunplay - Bogota
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Phvq_bQ0lY8
Looking forward to the new Gunplay tape soon, he makes me want to get rowdy.

Dude has so much presence.
He just eats the mic up, not super-lyrical but he makes up for it in personality and gusto.
-
2012
Gotta say, there's a lot of stuff I'm really excited for in here;
http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/editorials/id.1813/title.the-most-anticipated-hip-hop-albums-of-2012
Had no idea El-P was doing an album with Killer Mike. Seems a bit of an unlikely coming together, but it could be brilliant. Really like the new Bumpy and Premo stuff I've heard so far too.
Looking forward to seeing what Blockhead and Illogic come up with on their collab album too.
-
Cheers for the links
I think my favourite tracks on Dark Grapes were the Friendzone productions. Tried to find out about him after it came out but couldn't see anything online.
-
Just heard this
via Space Age Hustle and really like the beat
-
I still want to hear that Game lp actually.
If you want a good-to-great recent west coast gangster rap album in that vein, then the Jay Rock album from last year will suit you.

Haha,
funny cos he got blasted for not knowing about high bit rates and sound clipping and such. People were calling him out for having HORRIBLE and he was like WTF is a 320 file? He got educated really quickly. His stuff really suffers because of it so Im interested to hear this.
skellywager this'd this -
I missed the 9th Wonder record last year
Was it any good? Can't remember it cropping up in 2011's threads.
'cause I just heard this and it's a jam. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDhffv4fTV4
-
Yeah I got both his tapes thanks to you
Love 'em.
-
The reason I thought about him was the track he produces on the new Raekwon tape mentioned above
Which is the best track on it for my money. Good tape actually, better than the Coke Up In Da Dollar Bill. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tSI4io5iDM
-
Yeah Enjoy is cool.
He upped his drums a little too, which has always been a knock on him. I like that Masta Killa track. He got Mac Miller on one track so that auto-drops it about 3 points.
Its OKAY, a couple jams. Wouldn't rec it.
-
that's insane.
Especially for someone who is really getting a name for himself as a producer.
-
He's just a young dude
who started making beats and stumbled upon popularity really. Supposedly he would just type in a random word on Limewire or whatever and use the top picks to build tracks off of. *the purist in me died a little after reading that

-
Another pretty boy earing wearing rapper?
I mean I love this stuff but sometimes it feels like these dudes are amazing at picking crazy beats but rarely show much personality. Still loving this for the beat.
-
Yeah the beat is so good.
Wish someone else was rapping on it.

Friendzone is quality, he keeps the tumblr pretty up to date with tracks he's got on tapes and all that.
-
Yeah
A few duff tracks (notably some landfill r'n'b jam by his label's latest female signing) but overall it sounds good. Production is great and there's some classic Rae storytelling.

I love Riff Raff,
seriously seriously not sure if he's serious and it makes for some seriously insanely entertaining tunes/videos. Jose Canseco is a serious jam imo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3gRH-hPS9I
I watched this video like 50 times last year, can't take my eyes off it. First time I was angry, like wtf is this nonsense, then it grew on me and I was constantly like
IF YOU SEE SOMEBODY HATIN POINT EM OUT

It got far too much hype
but it had some great tracks on there. Niggas and Paris is massive.

they're a good spectical since they go all out but the music just isn't worth listening to in my opinion. They're kinda fun on mute.

-
You ever dipped into mid-career Jay?
Like Volume 2 or 3, or Blueprint? I actually think you would really like Vol 3. The production is more adventurous (less boom bappy), and his flow is still prime time. It has my favorite Jay track (and fav Timbo beat) on it: Snoopy Track.
-
How bout Nas on Triple Beam Dreams?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0iGzo3tBH4
Keys to The Crib is all kinds of great too. COol tape overall.

Album is called Rhyme Pays.
-
yeah
there is something about his voice that never really fits his beats. He can sound kinda off beat and awkward too like he hasn't listened to the beat before jumping on them. He gets lucky sometimes mind but more often than not I don't really see the fuss about his music.

jeez.
Better come with a bj for that price.
-
Hearing rumours that El-P might be working with Kevin Martin (The Bug)
at some point later this year when he finishes his own record. Mmmm.
-
Amazing
Pretty much perfect collaboration if you think about it. Vast Aire and El-P did appear on a track on a Techno Animal record but I'd love to see an instrumental record from El and Kevin.
-
It's just based on what Kevin said on twitter
Said he went to El last year with a load of beats which El loved but said he was too busy with his own record to do anything with right now. Kevin basically said he hoped to revive the project later this year in response to a fan question.
-
Would love to hear that happen
Seems like it would be a while off though.
In the meantime, New El-P/Killer Mike collab LP and an El-P solo LP should both be incoming this year.
-
-there is something about his voice that never really fits his beats.-
Of all the complaints you could level at Jay, this is probably the furthest off.
-
Love this.
Think I'm going to start a thread titled-
f. Kendrick Lamar
-
I've never heard anything else by him or Schoolboy Q
Interested after this though its got a diffrent vibe to it. Is Kendrick worth a dig into then?

I'd say the Black Hippy crew are primed to have a
big year this year. Each of them had extremely solid releases last year and are gaining tons of steam.

All gonna be on the album Grief Pedigree I think.
-
I had this conversation with a friend recently
And we agreed that the beat services Jay. He doesn't work to the beat. The beat works for him. Jay'll go anywhere he wants, and if the beat is there, great. If its not, great. That's all part of his unique charm. And part of his genius.
-
^
Apart from the fact I don't think he's genius haha.
-
Yeah, Kendrick's 'Section .80' tape is really good
Bit weird but that's what makes him interesting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEIkwH9STCc
Also he was probably the best guest on Drake's Take Care (which is where I first heard him which I'd imagine is true for a lot of people):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emfmgsSoxPkSchoolboy Q's tape is cool too, and again he stole the show on A$AP Rocky's tape by a long mile on this track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVbFFl1g30Y
That's probably the most bait introduction to those two ever haha but yeah.
hal_krishna this'd this -
I can agree with that.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8e4AVybkOM
Always loved how he kinda sits back behind the beat on this one, kinda slinks into his lines, randomly double-timing just cos.
-
Kendrick is great.
top 3 of 2011 for me. Has a very unique voice and some seriously great lyrical ability. Able to flip styles on the fly, evident on ADHD: http://youtu.be/QjlFqgRbICY He's definitely another one of those guys thats bridging that gap between goon rap and boom baps. Usually guys that have that crossover appeal are lacking at something, but he has all the tools. Love the balance of jazziness and boominess on this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yh6QxtRpSH8 with that kick and then the boooooom boooooom boooooom underneath. He goes bananas on the final verse, cruising along swiftly and then kicks it into like 6th gear.Theres a couple unfortunate hooks but they don't derail the album or anything.

-
nah it sounds a lot like Lana
but it's actually from this Kid Cudi 'Pursuit of Happiness' cover by Lissie:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmsbHGEB6UU&ob=av2n
But eerily similar to Lana Del Rey, I thought that it was her at first too until someone posted Lissie in the youtube comments.
-
contemplated starting a new thread for her,
but DiS has been mostly ambivalent to azealia banks so i won't bother. i really like her new song:
http://soundcloud.com/azealia-banks/needsumluv-sxlnd
more r&b orientated really, think it's wonderful though.

This is a great cover!
Better than anything Lana Del Ray's done. New ScHoolboy Q is pretty brilliant as well.

Just listened to M.O.P - Warriorz for the first time in absolutely years
It's aged well, I can't work out if that's for sentimental reasons or whether it is actually a great album?
I can't think of many more hype MCs than those two.
-
I think its a budding classic for sure.
You really can't go wrong with two angry dudes yelling at you over some of the knockingest boombaps ever recorded. They even manage to make this beat sound hard http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sA5ooDX3uEo

New side project by two of De La Soul collaborating with some turntablists using live instrumentation. Name is First Serve. Promising so far:
-
I like that shes drawing attention to tracks from Lone and Machinedrum
but yeah, I've not really enjoyed her trax much. That Lone track she spat on is a banger it deserves more love. It was a bit of an anthem last year but prob not for long enough tbf.
-
Banks vocal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjm5s_TAAvsLone Orig
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGgmDTANdfwShe sounds kinda wrong on it a lot of the time unfortunatly, most the chorus.
-
hey this is alright
I sware I was slagging him off in the thread last year for beign generic but capable, or was that Rick Ross? I get them mixed up. Cos their names are usualy about but I never heard them on tracks. Prob cos we don't have much of a hip-hop radio thing over here bar westwood and I've not listened to him in years.
-
Gibbs is a little bit 'one-note'
but he does that note really well. He can switch up his flow enough to hold interest, and he makes some great production choices.
-
Seems as though you are coming around to rap?
I remember you slaggin rap in general fairly recently.
-
nah I've always been into it
I just couldn't find much I was into for a while, plus I find breaks in hip-hop really played out nowadays so it wasn't until I heard the rapid drum machine stuff and odd business from main attrakionz and the like that I really got into it again.
-
Yeah the shift has turned back to production
and beat craft, which is cool by me.
I still think that Main Attrakionz stuff is missing the mark for the most part though, just not quite there yet imo. But I like the floaty production enough to check for it. I think the sound and technique is more influential than it is *good*, if you know what i mean.
-
they can be hit and miss with their rapping
I'm just a sucka for odd beats, plus I think they're getting more consistent on the mic, prob have more charecter on the mic than guys like ASAP Rocky or Lil B too who use the same producers sometimes. I dunno I just relate to their vibe, not 100% sure why but I can't stop playing it haha.
-
^ I wish he'd go back to that southern fried vibe he had going though
Not sure I entirely like the way he's going with the new gangster direction. Thuggin' is a bit of an exception.
-
Man, he's always been gangster, Im telling you.
His other moniker is Gangsta Gibbs!
-
I'm still catching up on 2011 somewhat
But man, what a year Curren$y had last year huh? Covert Coup with Alchemist, Weekend at Burnie's might have been his best full length yet and on top of that we got Verde Terrace for free... I love this guy, I could just sink into his lazy, washed out, drawling universe for hours on end.
-
Yeah I know
but Midwestgangsta was so much more than just gangster. Clever production, great soul samples, really nice groove to it. And then that final track Higher Learning which blows my mind. I just really hope he doesn't vanish into being a bit of a middle of the pack rapper - I liked him better as an oddball outlier.
-
He had a great year indeed,
but his 2010 was still better imo. Pilot Talk 1 and 2 are better than anything he did this year, but Covert Coup comes close.
Definitely one of those guys you put on when you just want to vibe out some laid back raps and not think about anything.
Silkyskillz11 this'd this -
I still think he's on par with his early output.
BANned and Heaven Can Wait are a couple of my favorite jams off the new one and those are pretty groovy and introspective.
He's signed to Jeezys label so hes gonna have some huge beats to work with, definitely interested to see what he does going forward.
-
Given her a few chances now
Re-listened to all the hyped tracks and she is just fairly dull as far as I can work out. I guess she fills the gap for an indie-orientated female rapper, good choice of beats but they're all already released as original tracks so it's not really that impressive. Dunno. She just seems like the hip-hop Lana Del Ray really.
-
Im just bumping thid for my own selfish means - that freddie gibbs / madlib one is amazing.
Incidentally, other than here, where is good to keep up with the 'less mainstream' hip hop
-
Lex Luger
keeps stepping up a level.
The beat on the ScHoolboy Q too, seems to be progressing in several directions at once.
theShipment this'd this -
What are peoples opinions on the JETS collab album?
mostly verses from Trademark Da Skydiver and Young Roddy who aren't super skilled or anything but get by, and the beats are consistently great, sticks with the hazy kinda vibe curren$y goes for. Plus him, Fiend and Smoke DZA, (who I don't think gets enough love round here tbh), all turn up for decent verses every so often.

Well worth your time. Title track is a MONSTER but plenty of other strong cuts on there. Artwork is dope too - looks almost like some John Dyer Baizley shit.

The new Schoolboy Q is getting a lot of plays at the moment

Him and Kendrick are the top dogs out there at the mo, for me -
my new cat is called cam'ron
that is all.
-
This is a prime example of my problem with ASAP Rocky
I find the track quite catchy and enjoyable, mostly due to the production, but I keep getting annoyed by the fact that Rocky says NOTHING. EVER. He's incredibly frustrating like that. Every single guest verse on the mixtape shows him up, and I WANT to enjoy it but find myself get caught up on the fact that he seems almost too blazed and boring all the time.
-
Song is great
and I don't know why he has to say anything really.
-
For me, its not a matter of 'saying anything'.
I listen to loads of rappers that dont 'say anything', but generally they entertain in other ways like delivery, energy, personality etc. I just get tired of how asap rides the beat, always accentuating like every third word. When he tries to switch it up he does better, but I have a hard time getting through his lp because he is so shotty. I agree with bmr about him getting sonned on his own tracks. I like some of it and am not really against his work, I just think he has room to improve, hopefully he does.
-
Yep, its good, for sure.
Finally started listening to it last week.

Fair
I do agree with what you've just said there actually

Downloaded 2 albums from iTunes just now,
haven't bought from them in years. Got the new Curren$y 'Muscle Car Chronicles' and KA 'Grief Pedigree'. KA sounds like it will be the Marcberg of 2012, for the dusty lo-key boom-bap fans. Muscle Car is all live instruments and features Thomas Pridgem on drums. Haven't dipped into either too much yet.
Been listening to a bunch of sugary raps as well, like Rich Kidz mixtape 'Everybody Hate Bread' and Young Thugs 'I came From Nothing 2' mixtape... which contains this song that is madly addicting:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImX30qntU-M the beat is so joyous.Enjoying the new Gucci, production is massive. Gangrene album is quite good, Rick Ross tape too.
DL'd new tapes from Saigon, Chase n Cashe, Pill, Alley Boy, Jackie Chain and Tony Yayo... backlogged for days.
Also got my hands on Nine's second album 'Cloud Nine' from like 96. Been meaning to get it for years, this is a full-on classic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYVcaQ1Bzu8 Nines voice is one of the best, gnarly and gristly.

-
The whole lp is only like 20 minutes long.
Its alright I spoze, not worth the price imo, oh well. Its good, just not super or anything. Beats sound good, always interesting to hear rappers over real drums, bass and guitars. That song you linked is prob the best on there.
-
Do it,
I might like it better than his first album. Might be overselling it tho, its fresh on my mind.
-
Love the description lol
Will check it out, I enjoyed his last one.
-
Really love the new Gucci.
I was wondering if he was just going to become yet another one of hip-hops wasted talents. That period in 08/09 leading up to 'The State...' he was just on fire, banging mixtape after banging mixtape. Then he just lost it, pretty similar to Wayne really. It's a shame because he can take alot of credit for kick starting the whole goon rap sounded that has dominated hip-hop for the last few years.
-
I've been enjoying that Gucci tape too
best thing he's done for ages.

Krit seems like a chill dude.

Gangrene - Vodka and Ayahuasca

-
I'm enoying this
prefer his his slower rapping to his faster stuff tho - seems to fit the beats slightly better - and damn! the beats are pretty great on this
-
I get no def jux from this, madlib maaybe a little,
this is just straight up lo-key NY based rap. Its great, but theres nothing partic weird or left field about it at all. Its his smooth monotone mixed with the understated production that actually works in its favor. Just has this late night dark alley vibe to it, the videos pretty much capture it perfectly, no flash or bombast. The album is real good. And like Ive said before, if you like this, then get 'Marcberg' and 'Everything's Berri'

new Hodgy Beats EP
somewhat all-star production is by Juicy J, Flying Lotus, the Alchemist, Jonti from stones throw and somebody else. First OF release that's done entirely with outside producers. interesting.

-
This is pretty good!
-
I second this
Much better than I expected from OF
-
Yeah
I've always thought Hodgy is a decent rapper if he gets some decent beats behind him - which I suppose is why I like the Mellowhype stuff best from Odd Future.
It seems like he's getting connected with some pretty legit producers for his solo stuff, and he's also done some stuff with Stones throw. Hope he stays on this path for his own music and keeps it seperate from the rest of the group.

B.J The Chicago Kid- His Pain II (feat. Kendrick Lamar)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guaITsm3aO8&feature=player_embeddedSeriously hooked now. So good to just chill out too. Can't find out much about B.J other than that he's a soul singer, but his album is on spotify and has some other tracks with Lamar, so think he might be Black Hippy affiliated. The production on this track is so fucking smooth- and turns out it's the same guy (Sounwave) who produced 'There We Go' on the Schoolboy Q (the Menomena sampling one), so props to him.
Anyway yeah, great tune.
-
First place I heard him was on The Coldest by Freddie Gibbs
Good voice, I'll check this out.

It is a v good song,
both guys sound on the verge of breakdowns. Affecting track.
reminds me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tb_mR1cIyj4
Ones about bangin' and the others about recognizing lifes blessings, quite different even tho the mood is similar. -
The B.J. The Chicago Kid record
is sounding pretty good. Only had it on once, but there's a bunch of good stuff on there.
-
I like how Kendrick's voice is cracking at the start
Not sure how intentional it is, though they've obviously left it in there on purpose, but it really adds to the atmosphere of the track. Sounds like he's about to burst into tears. Im pretty sure Lamar's voice sounds a bit different on every track I hear, kinda cool.
Never heard that Gibbs song, but yeah its similar. Like how the piano in the background goes all hectic when he goes double speed. Must admit, when you said 'Ones about bangin' I was pretty certain you were about to post a D'Angelo track!
-
haha,
HE IS COMING BACK THO!
Theres been a handful of reunion shows and he lost a bunch of weight and things sound like they're progressing as far as a record.

Man, I'm excited.
Potential to be one the best of the year, though it's gonna have to live up to a hell of a lot of expectation.

they always suck
no idea why holiday is ever involved tbh, is he big in the US or something? never heard of him or any of the other 'DJs' on these tapes. What do they do appart from shout?
-
Basically put the mix together is all I can gather.
BUt really they aren't needed for a lot of these bigger names. They used to be used more for distribution and like to put their stamp of approval on an artists, but like TI on a mix tape with some dj shouts makes no sense to me, just get one of your engineers to mix it down and put it out there. There are a lot more 'no dj' mixes than their used to be at least, but its still lame.

Not sure it'll be that good over 41 tracks, but damn those two tracks are tight.
-
Really?
He seems like one of the most likeable guys in hip hop.
-
His style is derivative and old school which always
brings the worst kind of rap fans/discourse. Also, the Ghostface vocal connection and the semi-generic boom-bap backdrop sounds horrible on paper. Those are lame reasons tho, you're right, love the cooking angle and he really does win you over with his wit, personality and skill. He's fun without being corny which is a VERY hard line to walk in hip hop.

lemonbrickcombo this'd this -
Have to be honest, the Hodgy tape was kinda the direction I thought they'd go before they blew up
It's a really solid piece of work: production pretty interesting, and even though Hodgy's not a great lyricist, his flow and his style is attention grabbing. Gonna see what this Oldie thing sounds like now.

This is excellent.
Good to just see all of them spitting verses over a good beat with no stupid gimmicks. Hope they do more stuff like this.

Not missing much tbf,
things are way slow. Excited to pick up the e-40 albums but he's an acquired taste. New King Louie tape is same ol. Everything is kind of marginal atm, nothing jumping out.
This is usually the time of year I start dipping elsewhere anyway.

I was wondering if it was a seasonal thing
I know the dance scene slows a few times a year when guys are busy but I couldn't see that happening with hip-hop tbh. Thats why I asked...
I'd not heard the new King Louie tho, so will give it a spin. Same old from him aint to bad haha. As long as its better than the Gunplay tape I'm happy.
-
Gunplay was more of a true mixtape in that it was
pretty much just his freestyles over some old production and some teasers at new stuff to come. Not bad per se, just not like a true album like we are getting used to with this new breed of mixtapes.

I liked AB and G Rap the best. Your boy Necro sounded fine too, I have no idea how to judge him, he seems to live in this rap world by himself, some kind of weird balance between like G Rap and ICP? Id say the only guy that lives in a similar sungular world within rap is Tech N9ne.

The first tune is vg but seems to go downhill from there.
Obv it's no longer an original sound, but I'd still rock a disc of Premier beats (and cuts) anyday. But yeah, overall it's no brilliant.
-
Not a year goes by when I don't hope for that Primo & Nas LP
Two artists who I really couldn't give a shit if the music they are making is 'current' or 'trendy', and neither can most of their fans I imagine. I think it's pretty much a given that they'd still make a great 10-12 track album together.
Lets be fair though, Primo's earned the right to do whatever the fuck he wants.
-
He sounds like whoever ghost wrote for him
so in this case... Kendrick Lamar. Beat is fresh though.
-
Haven't heard.
Any links to tracks?
-
This should be cool.
I really liked killer Mikes album from last year too but it kind of flew under the radar. I like his energy as a rapper.

New Starlito tape

Nice
I'll have to get on this. One of his best tapes was all Burn One: http://www.datpiff.com/Starlito-Renaissance-Gangster-mixtape.102287.html Its ace.

Really feeling this, dispite the name and the fact it feels like hip-hop-hipstergeddon haha.
-
So I never expected this GOOD Music tape to be, y'know, good...
But this is pretty lazy Kanye West material:
http://soundcloud.com/djrellyrell/kanye-west-big-sean-pusha-t-dj
Hit Boy supplies a decent beat, but this is 2010's era Kanye on complete autopilot for me. Excuse me, is you sayin' something?
theShipment this'd this -
New track from T.I.- Love This Life
Really liking it. The production is a bit different and slightly more understated than some of his recent stuff. There's the tidy keys and drums and this underlying horn (maybe guitar slide, sounds like some brass to me) which perfectly resonates with his flow. And it's a fine flow too.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2u0sH8QB2Q -
Also, not sure what people think of Machine Gun Kelly.
Sometimes I listen to him and think he's just taking the piss (Wild Boy) and other times I quite like his stamp (Half Naked, Almost Famous). But listen to a track that's put out recently (not sure if it's album or mixtape material): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugaMFTT2q5w
And hark back to Foals' track Electric Bloom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1n7CwuWIa4 the first line of which reminds me a lot of MGK's chorus sung by Cassie. "This is a, this is a warning shot. Your final call."
-
Just checked
Warning Shot was on Rage Pack but without Cassie featuring. Livvi Franc is on vocals and the line is as ascertainable.
-
listened to this yesterday.
It's pretty good. "Bitch I'm Lugubrious" has to be the best song title of the year.

I am getting really excited about
a) The new El-P record
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6NVW93Jibob) The new Killer Mike record, produced by El-P. This is quite a funny little video. El-P is my favourite dude on twitter. Nice to see he's just the same IRL. So pysched about him playing Paris at the end of May.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4666AaZCwE&feature=youtu.be -
No doubt
I've got these nailed on as 2 of the best albums of the year... Released in consecutive weeks iirc too. It's nice to see Killer Mike getting some wider recognition, Pl3dge was sick, but I think this will be on another level.
-
This is second only to "I Like The Way You Move"
In terms of chart topping rap
-
Yes!
I've heard the KM/EP album, and it's probably my favorite hip hop album of the year so far alongside the Ka's Grief Pedigree. Can't wait for people to hear it!
The El-P record is bound to be killer as well. So you should pump this shit like they do in the fuuuture!
-

quite a subtle tape, definitely grows and grows

A lot has gone over my head this year so far, the Schoolboy Q album is brillz though
Any Spotify playlists about of the best of the year so far?
-
Homeboy Sandman
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xZcXEbU_Uw&feature=related
I've only recently discovered him, his flow and wordplay is nice. -
Cheers for putting me on to Captain STEEZ Kyle_
'Leave ya melon leaking like breastfeeding'! will have to grab the 'korruption' mixtape when I get home - some nice production credits from what I can see.
-
I tried to make a Spotify playlist the other day
but so much stuff isn't on there (mixtapes and stuff mainly) it wasn't really worth it. It's also been a bit of a slow start to the year in my opinion. I've mainly been catching up on stuff I missed last year.
Other than Schoolboy, top 3 for me would be:
Shady Blaze- 'The Grind, Hustle & Talent'
Ka- 'Grief Pedigree'
Gangrene- 'Vodka and Ayahuasaka'And after that these are definitely worth checking out:
Boldy James- Consignment
BIG K.R.I.T- '4eva and a Day'
Action Bronson- 'Blue Chips'
Stalley- 'Savage Journey to the American Dream'
Odd Future- 'O.F Tape Vol. 2' (if you dig those guys)Should be loads more stuff out over the next month or so though, I expect big things from El-P, Killer Mike, Curren$y and Kendrick Lamar (for me, Lamar's has the potential to be album of the year based on the first two singles).
Sorry for lack of description and stuff, will come back to it, but right now I need to get some z's.

but yeah, really gotta sleep now
-
Cool
It's actually Capital Steez, I just made a type-o in my post.
The mixtape is pretty nice, mainly familiar beats, but good selections nonetheless.
-
Good list of stuff here
There's a bunch of stuff coming out in the next few months which should be killer. I reckon it's gonna be a really strong rap year actually.
-
So at Coachella
Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg included a hauntingly lifelike hologram of 2Pac in their set:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULrFtjaixbY
Not sure if I think this is cool or just really weird... definitely puts a lump in the stomach.
-
Cheers pal
Great stuff, I'll rifle through that lot
-
2Pac
That is actually mental, my spine tingled at the end! Also I got that casey veggies mistape yesterday it is brilliant.
Can I also suggest YG feat DJ Mustard-4Hunnid Degreez (mixtape)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cAR-Pc91XA -
Both
I'm just glad I wasn't in the crowd tripping on something, it would've fucked me up... But they couldn't really play a set like that without a tribute, and it's a pretty sick way of doing it.
-
With the Tupac hologram excitement:
Favourite track?
Can't C Me for me
-
This for sure,
although Im not big on the new KRIT or the Shady Blaze. Krit may yet grow on me, but I decided I don't like Shady Blaze, he just raps really fast but not ever really on point.
-
Man, so hard.
It Aint Easy or Heartz of Men maybe. Fav single would have to be How Do You Want It.
-
Its kind of corny, but kind of cool yeah,
good for nostalgia trippin for sure.
-
In other news
E-40 doing an album with Too $hort, D.I.T.C. recording a second record (Big L to appear in hologram form?), K.R.I.Ts awesome KRITWuzHere & ReturnOf4Eva to get physical release, Cam'Ron releasing a shit load of cast-offs on twitter.
-
Top 5:
Because it's so hard..
Old School
Heartz of Men
I Get Around
Out on Bail
Temptations -
really hope the DITC record
isn't a flop.. will be hard to fill the gap left by Big L. On tracks like Day One and Thick the burst of energy L delivers in comparison to the others is immense..
-

We'll see.
Even without L, it's a still a decent crew... but yeah, not exactly controversial to say he was my favourite member.

So for the last two weeks I've basically been listening to Billy Woods' new album 'History Will Absolve Me' on repeat. Seriously good stuff. Up there with El-P and Ka for my favorite hip hop of 2012 for sure.

Somebody down the pub earlier
suggested that we are entering a second golden-age of hip-hop.
When I compare the amount of new artists I am excited about at the moment, it was hard to disagree. Definitely don't remember a time in the last decade which felt quite like this; was usually just one artist at a time, if that, and then smatterings of good LPs from already established artists.
Cool.

All three have been on MTV at some point
Riff - From Gs to Gents
Simon Rex (Dirt Nasty) - MTV vj from when I was a teenager and watched religiously
Andy Milonakis - The Andy Milonakis ShowAnd have all gone on to try their hands in the rap world (Riff Raff the only one who actually started as such). Its all fun, and def walks the line between actually good and parody and uh, a full on joke, so I never really know how to digest it other than to just smile and enjoy it for a couple plays. i reckon Das Racist and/or Childish Gambino try to occupy a similar space but neither of them go over the top enough for me, they have just enough self-seriousness to them that it ends up turning me way off. There's a fine line with this type of thing.
-
Function is a total jam.
Might take me the rest of the year to get a good handle on the 3 discs that were just released.
-
I don't feel like it is,
but only time will tell on these kind of things. I got into rap when the 'golden age' was going on, but even at that time the term didn't exist, it was just an exciting time, all kinds of great releases on a weekly basis, mainstream and underground. Its pretty hard to recreate that sort of thing. Things were a little more singular then too, hiphop is way different now and the way in which people engage with it is different obv.

Masta Ace – MA DOOM
*sigh*
I love Masta Ace. Every solo album he’s put out has its place in my collection.
This was always gonna be a let down.
It’s billed as a ‘collaboration’ album with DOOM, but realistically the lazy ass in the mask has no input here. The beats are lifted straight from the Special Herbs tapes, while the freshest 'herb' has been floating around for 7 years now. Many of these have even featured on major indie releases.
I’ve always thought Ace had an ear for beats, but at first listen I’m not convinced these DOOM-scapes are even a natural match for him as an MC. Ace is still a great rapper, but after 8 years it seems he’s wasting these verses.
In an era when dudes be releasing 3 or 4 full albums a year as ‘mix tapes’, Ace has dumped a mix tape and expects it to wash as an album. He sounds nice on most of these tracks, and I’ll probably be bumping this anyway, but I can’t help but feel disappointed.
*I pretty much feel like the worst person for downloading this, but I’ll just get the re-issue of Disposable Arts to make up for it.
tldr; <Big post about album no one cares about>
-

All his solo releases are good-to-great. His collabo albums are ehhh.

There's been pretty much zero marketing
You'd be lucky to stumble across the pre-order link on the Underground Hip Hop website. :/
But it is a full album release, CD and Vinyl.

New Nacho Picasso x BSBD album

Loving this, once again. Nacho Picasso keeps bringing it, and I think these might be some of Blue Sky Black Death's best beats yet. Make that three brilliant full length albums in just ten months then.

Bit mental? I know it's a bit late but the tape only came out this week and I wasn't aware of the track before. It sounds a bit like Q when he goes off on one. It definitely doesn't sound like Chris Brown anyway.
Anyway, two great tapes from Gucci so far this year! Who saw that coming after V-Nastygate, eh?

I'm gonna give it a proper outing on my crosstown cycle in a minute. Can't wait.

Yeah it's nice alright.
Decided to check him out after listening to him on Druggys with Hoes Again wasn't expecting much. His vocals are amazing, think he doubles up his vocal track or something but he sounds great especially in Terrorist threats.
-
Anyone got any opinions on the rifts at the moment?
Pusha T supposedly dissing Drake, Lil Wayne, Birdman, YMCMB, etc.. Lil Wayne responding.. Malice exclaiming disinterest.
Pusha T: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cb_QI5GVRz8
Lil Wayne: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxrGODH9ppA
And Pete Rock and Lupe Fiasco exchanging words for Fiasco's re-imagining of the T.R.O.Y. beat, which you can hear here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aOjcm0zYUs
Pusha T one seems akin to Common.. trying to get the hype from taking shots at a big target.
Agree with Pete Rock being annoyed mainly because the Fiasco track is so lame. Sounds like a hollow re-interpretation of the beat and the lyrics aren't great.

I really didn't think americans used the phrase "Top Dog"
It's weird. Maybe it has always been used. Not sure how I feel about Jay Rock, only listened to a few tracks and they didn't make much of an impact.

Anyone heard the SpaceGhostPurrp album?
some nice beats, but it's funny how he's the one getting all the attention when he's easily the least exciting rapper I've heard from the Raider Klan lot. S'alright though. If 4AD are smart they'll sign the whole lot up on some group deal - did they do that already?
Enjoying that new Joey Bada$$.

I do like the SGP album
I'm just surprised it's getting so widely covered in the indie press with hardly any mention of the other Raider Klan stuff. Don't get me wrong, the others in RK might not end up amounting to much, but they've come out with some great songs at least. Here's a couple of favorites;

Speaking of rappers from the 90s...
Did you see the Canibus rap battle? I cringed so hard when he pulled out the notepad. You gotta feel he stitched himself up taking the challenge in the first place, but all he had keeping him going was his reputation as a battle rapper. Poor lad.
-
Oh, in case anyone was interested, rap battle here (death blow & Canibus choking from around 30mins)
-
Ha watched this yesterday
kind of a weirdly intriguing watch really. I actually kinda felt bad for Canibus. He got owned so bad, he just looked so defeated and dejected, that other guy is turd tho.
littlebirds this'd this -
You couldn't help feel bad for him
especially with his arm in a sling lol. Dizaster is a douche, but some of his disses clearly hit home... Oh well, at least Canibus doesn't live with his mum.
-
Cheers, appreciate the feedback.
yeah think I might bring in that last organ bit and have it through the song, might drop out some of the percussion and leave it with some simple kick hi hat snare combination.
-
really weird,
uncomfortable viewing.. saw a Danny Brown interview yesterday where he talked about how darkly weird it can be when you meet rappers who've clearly hit their peak but refuse to let go, seemed oddly relevant. Still, felt bad for the man, and the eerie silence merged with murmurs of disrespect when he started reading out of his pad. Also Supernatural looked pissed off the whole time probably because he also thinks Disazter is a turd.

Actually his one from last year is better.
This new one has some jams though. Chuck Inglish productions are good.

Yeah, 808s and dark grapes is amazing.
But the odd tunes they have been since have not been that great, they get the best producers it seems.

dont think it has yet
LV are so damn good. Never thought of this as hip-hop mind but it doesn't matter. Can't wait for this album, I still play Routes often and this sounds just as hot as that already. Did you hear the recent Okzharp mixes? http://blackdownsoundboy.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/return-of-okzharp.html
badmanreturns this'd this -
Honestly, I think the evidence of the last 6 or 7 albums suggests he doesn't have a front-to-back consistent record left in him
There were flashes of brilliance around the turn of the last decade, and with The Lost Tapes, & The Nigger Tape before Untitled.
But with 14 tracks, 2 solid producers (Salaam Remi & No ID) handling the bulk of the production, and no obvious stabs at a loooong out of reach pop audience, it could be as close as we get. Thank fuck there's no publicity stunts yet either...

Liking this.
Sounds like Gza a little maybe? Beat is completely twisted up.
-
Been digesting that OC and Apollo Brown lp.
OC sounds great. I tend to get fatigued listening to full lengths of Apollos beats though. They can be quite good ( http://youtu.be/TwxhEaziyjg , http://youtu.be/2PyCET3_X5E ), but too much of him gets boring, his range is very limited (same exact drums/tempo, chopped-up swelling strings/horns) which is a bad thing when you're work is already as derivative as his is (Muggs, Premier, Rza). Idk, its not bad by any means, but it should have either been like around 10 songs long, or he should have used a few other producers to mix it up. Im all for using one producer, but if that producer is as limited as AB, then nah.
-
Kool G Raps album from last year is in a similar vein,
but is just a little better than this. Mainly because he had a mixture of producers that fit within the pallet, but bring enough differences to keep it interesting.
-
Agree on the limited production range
Kinda fades into the background for me.
Still haven't heard that OC & AG joint from a few years back. Worth checking?
-
Yeah def, probably on a similar plane as the those mentioned
here but a little better.
DITC still has it for sure, I feel no need to check out too much NY boom bap these days but will always check up on their current output.
-
Chief Keef does nothing for me at all!
I decided this recently.
-
me either
I found him a bit rubbish overall.
-
Zero range as a rapper
and boring ripofflexluger101 beats.
-
Can't say anything he's done has grabbed me
But then, this kind of stuff usually creeps up on me against my will.
-
He has a couple ok headbangers,
has no scope beyond that yet though. He's super young and all, and maybe will expand, but doesn't warrant the hype. That production on that vein of rap has gotten as stale as boombap did.
Kyle_ this'd this -
He's no Gunplay not by a long shot
He's not even a 2 Chainz and he's damn generic.
-
Has anyone mentioned Flatbush Zombies here yet?
They've released some pretty promising singles so far. Great presence, decent beats too. looking forward to a full release.
Thug Waffle is particularly great http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=do9VLONS86Y
-
Seems a bit gimmicky to me?
Maybe its just the zombie thing, idk. They need a song about bacon to confirm my suspicions.
-
Thought that at first too
I think it's just because it feels very ready-made for a major to come in and put out a record without having to do much. In fact, ever since watching their first videos, I've kinda assumed there's already something behind them. The name/branding is definitely a bit gimmicky, but those aspects don't creep into the music itself too often.
I dunnno, just think that first rapper has lots of personality and can really dominate a beat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ix8kLAPQsjE
-
That's pretty cool.
We'll see, I'll reserve judgment for now.

Funny thing is
that I'm definitely not a Death Grips fan and I love it!
Def a bit of GZA / Dalek in there
-
Ha, yeah not a big DG fan myself.
Still haven't heard the new one, mind.

It's basically music to jump around drunk/stoned to
Pretty much rubbish but fun in those circumstances I guess.

Meyhem Lauren tape
http://www.prefixmag.com/media/meyhem-lauren/respect-the-fly-shit-mixtape/66744/
So I've been looking forward to this for a while and it kinda lives up to my expectations. Meyhem sounds great on it and the whole thing is superbly produced by Harry Fraud and Tommy Mas. Action Bronson is on about half of the tracks, and there's also appearances from Roc Marci, Sean Price and AG Da Coroner among others. I'm sure this will be posted around on all the blogs, but it's well worth a look.
-
Kitty Pryde seems like a lovely person.
http://youtu.be/shdZubjW-V4
If she gets more popular than she is could mean hip-hop subject matter might change a lot, which would be interesting. Hip-hop from the point of view from a middle class american white girl is interesting. -
New Slaughterhouse single is utterly dreadful :(((
-
oh man, I wrote some long comment and it didn't post.
But yeah, basically I don't know if it's for me, but I respect what she's doing. I grew up on 90s emo so have no problems with adolescent songs about relationships, or her embracing of the form in a respectful way. It's the giggly, cutesy delivery which I find a bit grating, but otherwise it's not too bad.

Yeah not too interested in hip-hop
from middle class white girls. Just not a narrative I can get excited about. I don't usually listen to rap to try and relate to it.
-
I heard that Cupid track and thought
Hey, there's no reason I shouldn't like this. Beat is nice, and she's at least as good at rapping as Based God
But on repeated listens her style started to really grate - she's a one-flow wonder which doesn't help. Not hating on her, for what it is it's better than I would imagine, but just don't think it's for me.
-
terrible
beat during the verses kinda reminds me of Yessir by DOOM

I ain't complaining.
-
Large Pro doesn't even drop a verse!
Pretty cool track, seems like it could fit within the album nicely, not really single material tho.
-
I think Accident Murderers is the new single
probably just dropped this to build hype amongst the oldies.
-
Another goodie from Nas

New Rick Ross song 'Hold Me Back' is really boring

Just found out about LUV NY.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTF7JWBlQzk&feature=player_embedded
New York Hip-Hop 'supergroup' with AG, O.C, Roc Marciano, Kool Keith, Kurious and Dave Dar (don't know the last two.) Production is by Ray West, who did AG's 'Everything's Berri' a couple of years back, and loads of Roc Marciano stuff.
Teaser trailer here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTF7JWBlQzk&feature=player_embeddedHave been getting really into the sparse NY sound since Ka's 'Grief Pedigree' earlier this year, which is still one of my top albums. Picked up Marcberg after someone (probably Shipment!) recommended it, and have been loving that too.
Anyhow, first track dropped a couple of days ago, with O.C rapping. Just the sort of thing I was hoping for, production is perfect; minimal and dub-heavy with sparse drums, works well with O.C's flow:
http://www.factmag.com/2012/07/04/stream-acid-the-new-track-from-kool-keith-supergroup-luv-ny/Album is out later this month, 26th I think. Should be good!
-
Yeah, new album is pretty decent.
This track is the standout, although I've only listened through a couple of times.
Nothing he's done recently has touched Pilot Talk 1 & 2. That Alchemist EP came closest I guess. Props to him for using different producers and beats and constantly churning out solid releases, but I was instantly hooked on the Ski Beats stuff, where as I can only get into a few tracks off the newer tapes.
The guy is hilarious though- I will never tire of watching his interviews, he's always so fucking high :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F24yGBi5uLw -
Another new Main Attrakionz joint dropped too.
'Passion'
http://soundcloud.com/dreamcollabo/100s-passion-feat-mainProduced by Joe Wax this time, whoever he is. Has anyone ever seen this Joe Wax, Friendzone and Clams Casino in the same room together? Another blissful beat, similar to 'Women We Chase'.
They've got to be the most productive guys in the game right now surely? It's ridiculous. A lot of it is average but when they get it right, like this track, they're great.
-
Green Ova To The Top
one of the older Friendzone produced tracks with Shady Blaze, has got a video now too:
Video is great. It's got that feel-good Luniz 'I Got 5 On It' rap party vibe. The song also has a catchy hook too, which is pretty rare for Main Attrakionz.
Right, that's the last one. Gonna stop talking to myself and go to bed now.
-
!!!
yesss. This could maybe be the best thing ever. Lovin this sound so much.
-
I've warmed to his catalog actually.
Think his 2nd album is kind of a masterpiece as well. Take It In The Blood is top 5 Nas jams for sure. Nas countdown is needed maybe?
-
No idea about this Joe Wax.
2nd verse is really good on this, Mondre Man?

That's Shady Blaze at 1:45?
I thought he only rapped in double and triple time? He should do more stuff like this then.
-
Nah I didn't check that one. Saw it was like 30+ tracks and couldn't be bothered.
Will have a listen now though.
-
Enjoying the new Aesop Rock
It's a fairly dense album, but I find that his refined flow weaves hypnotically over the beats, and while I'm left with little impression of what he's spitting on the first couple of listens, it makes for a satisfying record. Zero Dark Thirty didn't grab me as a single, but it shines in the context of the album.
He proves himself as an accomplished full-length producer in the absence of Blockhead, creating a fairly unique vision of hip hop that you couldn't really see coming from another artist, and layered beats that I can see appealing to indie rock crowds, without pandering to them.
Not quite brilliant, but likely his best full length since Labour Days. Good year for Jukies so far, I reckon.
-
Always good to have you gb.
Love that reese jam, super simple hook/beat and straight up hood raps done right. Ragazino is nice, Skyzoo is nice, neither are particularly stellar but they stay in their lanes. Brianna>Azelia, she is fun, Marilyn Monroe is constantly running through my head, Back Der is awesome too. Lola sounds so much like Nikki, hotter tho. Rico song was annoying to me, don't really like bees in the trap tho, so. Still can't bring myself to rate anything by Das Racist :/
-
Danny Brown x AraabMUZIK

Full track coming on the 17th. Sounds like a pretty great match up from this video.
-
So Life Is Good dropped
I'm enjoying it. Must be his overall best produced record since... god knows... It Was Written?
Unfortunately it suffers a few major issues: some terrible sequencing, the first 5 tracks pretty much owning everything else, and an absolute car crash of a Swizz Beatz chorus.
Still, I got that renewed faith in God's Son.
-
Seriously WTF is that about
Must've been higher than his own hairline.

I'd definitely agree that it comes out all guns blazing, the first five or so songs are massive. I just wish 'Summer on Smash' was replaced with 'Nasty' (or any of the extra songs from the deluxe edition really) because it just doesn't fit the rest of the album. I'm also a sucker for 'Bye Baby' and 'Cherry Wine' at the end; which is funny because if anybody else had made them I'd probably had thought they were lame. Nas saying the best moment of his life was watching Kelis screaming at racist cops - you're breaking my heart Nasir!
-
Did anybody catch that Intelligence2 debate at the Barbican?
It was on a couple of weeks ago, but I wrote a little piece here about how frustrating it was. The motion being discussed was 'Does hip hop enhance or degrade society', yet strangely I actually found myself being more pissed off at the pro-hip hop team.

New MellowHype - 'Fakuoy'
Sounding good, very minimal beat. Looking forward to Numbers again after basically forgetting it was coming. Still the best thing about OF imho.
-
Interesting article about Lil B
slightly academic approach comparing his positivity to the negativity of Theodor Adorno.. definitely makes some really interesting points about the Lil B phenonemon:
http://infinitelyfullofhope.wordpress.com/2012/07/13/lil-b-positivity-as-critique/
-
I completely forgot about them too, somehow
Blackenedwhite, the original one with Hell and without IGotagun, is still my favourite OF release by far, maybe one of my favourite rap albums period.
badmanreturns this'd this -
100% ^this
The re-release was such a letdown in comparison, and it's what most people will judge them on probably.
-
reminds me of a simpler time
this video is already nostalgic:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjZKdXMBYuA
remember watching this, streaming Right Here on youtube and waiting for the blackenedwhite 'release date' which was basically just a tumblr link to a mediafire download.
-
quite charming
that Hell got left off the re-release because they couldn't clear a sample from 'A Charlie Brown christmas'

Domo Genesis & The Alchemist
feat. Earl, Vince Staples & Action Bronson - Elimination Chamber
-
Wow, this is nice.
Glad other Odd Future members are following Hodgy's lead and moving away from the whole in-house thing. Didn't think I'd be hearing Earl and Action Bronson together on a track any time soon- but glad I am. The Alchemist's beat here is so smooth.
skellywager and theShipment this'd this -
apparently the whole Domo Genesis album
will be handled by the Alchemist - good news!

A whole album of stuff like this, 'Cartoons and Cereal' and 'The Recipe'

New TNGHT (HudMo x Lunice) video (featuring some shots from the frankly staggering Village Underground show a few weeks ago)
Higher Ground: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HzyUHxmkg0&feature=youtu.be
Apparently they've got vocals for every track on the EP but aren't revealing who they are just yet. No doubt it'll sound insane.
Here's their official Waka Flocka remix as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y251kbgioJ0&feature=player_embedded
Amazing stuff.
-
Love this track
So the EP isn't instrumental?? Cheeky fuckers. Didn't see that coming.
When FlyLo dropped their shit everyone went insane.
-
Ah no sorry the EP is instrumental
but they've lined up people to vocal each track as well. Apparently. I dunno I've read so many interviews with them recently it's hard to remember what Lunice was chatting about, guy never shuts up (he's still a hero though).
-
Yeah, thought that would be an odd twist
XV is the only guy I heard take on Bugg'n, but not really feeling his version tbh
-
This is great!
These producer records with multiple vocalists can always go either way, but it's a great guestlist and I love the vibe on this whole thing.
skellywager this'd this -
Looking forward to this
It's interesting what HudMo and Lunice have been saying about wanting to work with more rappers. Would love to see guys like this getting more official hip hop work and hopefully this project could provide a bit of a push. That's the idea at least, I think.

Remember lots of Earl Sweatshirt/Hudson Mohawke

New Blu & Exile track, A Man.
http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/singles/id.21214/title.blu-exile-a-man
Super hyped for the "official" release of Give Me My Flowers... Coming this autumn apparently.
-
Guess the story of the day is this Captain Murphy cat
On the brilliant FlyLo single with Earl:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GO6mInu6CBk
And on the Madlib-esque - Mighty Morphin Foreskin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4amEWUw6t4
Both pretty great tracks... Interestingly no one knows if it's just Tyler or Earl fucking about, or someone else entirely.
JaguarPirate this'd this -
Ha yeah it sounds like Tyler one second then Hodgy the next.
Great stuff though, would love a whole album like this, always felt Cosmogramma was just a bit too much really.
JaguarPirate this'd this -
I kind of hope this is Tyler & Earl
Mainly because if it was it would be the most creative and exciting thing to come out of OF pretty much since the initial buzz run. It definitely sounds a bit like them, and it (almost) definitely sounds like there are two separate voices in there, both being pitch shifted continuously.
If not, whoever Captain Murphy is is fucking great.
JaguarPirate this'd this -
Haha I'm still digesting Cosmogramma
almost not ready for another album.
Odd Future seem to be finding their feet a bit recently, like, where they can go from here. Still can't quite believe how many people liked their stuff for about 2 months last year, then quickly jumped ship.
-
Vacation for a couple weeks,
looks like I have some catching up to do.
Meanwhile Lloyd Banks has a new tape which Im actually excited for since Cold Corner 2 was one of my top 5 releases from last year.
-
Cool
To be honest, I've only got around to checking the odd Lloyd Banks track the past couple of years, but maybe I'll give this whole tape a listen.
-
Feeling this album
Surprised at some of the less enthusiastic reviews.
-
Get Cold Corner 2 first imo.
Then do this one if you like that.
Hunger For More 2 was a v underrated (ugh that word) major label release as well. Weird cos I am way more into this late career resurgence of G Unit underdogs (Lloyd, Young Buck, Yayo) than I was when they were wiping their asses with benjamins. Even 50 is a more intriguing character now as he gets back to just rapping hard for the love of it.
-
Yeah no doubt.
Liked HFM2 when it dropped, but haven't heard anything since, so I'll try Cold Corner 2. Was kinda looking forward to the latest 50 release, but it wasn't much good after all.
-
Subthread.
If anyone comes across any good acapellas could they let me know. At the moment in need of standard 120bpm 4/4.
cheers -
Apparently the cool thing atm
is to take the acapellas from Jay-Zs recent smash hit 'The Black Album' and do full length remixes. Like mix it all up with Wiz Khalifa vocals and call it The Black & Yellow Album... or with tween-pop youtube hits and call it The Rebecca Black Album.
Let me know how it goes.
skellywager this'd this -
Enjoying the song w/ Andre
Restored some hope for the album, because I thought 3 Kings was rubbish and Hold Me Back was pretty boring too. I am a Ross fan though so I hope the album is strong.
-
Feeling this Scotty tape
http://indy.livemixtapes.com/mixtapes/18058/scotty_the_jiffy_cornbread_experience.html
First song is a Burn One beat that sounds like vintage Dre or something.
-
Remember the Grey Album?
Those were the days.
-
The odd thing about the Andre song
Is it's obviously just a vehicle for him to spit a long ass verse over, and the J League production seems tailored to him rather than The Boss.
Ross is so peripheral to this that he might as well have not showed up, made it like Dear Summer on that Memph Bleek album.
-
Haha, his laborious intro talking about the song's 'concept' is kinda funny. It's like he thinks it's some really complex idea that we wouldn't be able to grasp without his explanation.
In saying that, I like Ross over this kind of production. The smooth stuff from Teflon Don was my favourite.
-
Dont really care for Scotty as a rapper,
pretty listless. But yeah the beats, he's lucky to work w Burn One so much.
-
You'd have to be REALLY shit to stop me enjoying anything Burn One produces.

anyone listened to the angel haze mixtape? georgiabeth | 19 Jul '12, 11:01 | ^ This | Reply
Yes just getting in on it now, wow really good so far!
-
a mate of mine put together a rap mix for my blog which I reckon a fair few of you might get a kick out of if you have a spare half hour. I think its really nicely put together, couple of slightly more out-there instrumental tracks but mostly just straight rap tracks from the last couple months.
http://www.mixcloud.com/FreshVerbal/fresh-verbal-mix-01/
(blog is www.freshverbal.wordpress.com, just to JAG a little).
-
cool,
good coverage. That Shell Tops track is good.
-
Yo Kyle, do you have the new DOOM album?
Any good? Press copy I guess?
*this post comes to you via last.fm stalking.

cheers man!
and yeah, I really like that Shell Tops one. Hopefully gonna have that in the next mix, gonna try and make it a monthly-or-so thing.

also new Homeboy Sandman

really feeling some of his stuff, unsure about other bits... this is taking me a while to rap my head around.
-
Will bang this on at work tomorrow
I like your blog.
-
The shitty guitar solo at the end
I'm guessing that's Andre 3000. Really going for that Jimi Hendrix thing.
-
Hey man, yeah got a press copy
I like it for sure. Just trying to work out how much I like it, but assuming you're a fan I reckon you'll dig it. I need to sit down properly and try and soak up all the references, as it's supposed to have a big South London influence but I've just been listening to it in a surface-level kinda way so far.
-
Yup, yup
I'm a fan. I pretty much reckon that an album full of new DOOM rhymes can never be a bad thing. He's obviously the kind of artist who would just smoke some weed and toss out a half-baked album without much care, even after a 3 year absence, so I never get my hopes up much.
-
Enjoying what I've heard of this Flatbush Zoimbies group so far
http://www.mediafire.com/?39zwf33pzaain2a
^that's the new D.R.U.G.S mixtape, pretty great, they'll inevitably get compared to Odd Future cos of the horrorcore connection but they're a bit more freeflowing and less focused on one-liners. Still, haven't given it a proper listen yet.
New track with A$AP as well, called Bath Salt :D

recommend me some LPs/mixtapes from this year please
you know what i like.. Danny Brown, Freddie Gibbs, DJ Quik etc
-
Might could like these:
Ab Soul - Control System (tends to lean on the emo a bit, but still good)
Schoolboy Q - Habits & Contradictions (pretty sure youd like this)
Action Bronson - Blue Chips (east coast ghostface style raps)
Gangrene - Vodka & Ayahuasca (has some cool beats, good paranoid vibe)
KA - Chief Pedigree (real lowkey boom bap, may be a but boring for you, maybenot tho)
Killa Kyleon & Mouse On Da Track - Welcome to the Fish Fry (hella fun southern rap, tons of quotables)
Mayhem Lauren - respect the Fly Shit (similar vein to action bronson)
Tree- Sunday School (unique beats)Being a sound nerd, you should def have these two:
Zilla - Zilla Shit 2 (blockbeataz productions are ear candy)
SL Jones x DJ Burn One - Paraphernalia (crisp, attention to detail) -
no Killer Mike?
Big K.R.I.T?
El-P? -
Block Beattaz are selling beats through their website
Kinda crazy. Or maybe it's not? Don't think I've ever seen it done like this at least
-
Been rinsing New York for a couple of weeks
But only just got around to listening to this. Kinda expected it to be a bit samey, but there's plenty of variation and some great beats in there. I found her voice a little monotonous by the end of the tape, but pretty impressed overall.
-
He's already heard El and KM.
And I dont think he'd like the BK record. These are more just catered to him, not necessarily my definitive favorites of the year. KM record is def up there.
-
Good for them I guess, seems like a pretty cool idea.
I've never seen it done either. I'd imagine they keep back specific beats but might as well put the rest out there for up-and-comers with a bit of cash.
-
The K.R.I.T album is disappointing
Listened to it numerous times and can't remember a single song.

Haha yeah, Biggie kills that beat
There's actually loads of Thomas the Tank Engine rap mash-ups. At my old-job we used to play them one after another continuously until we drove eachother mad. The Biggie one is the best for sure.
-
Killer tune from last year now with video alert
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kf_V_yI3HfU
Great song. Shame about the bitches in the vid. God damn, budget must've been tight.
-
It was funny,
I became friends with him at these huge family dinners we would have on occasion and no one knew how to interact with him (stylin and cocky teenager) so I just started talking hip hop with him, blew his mind! He started up at film school recently and sends me stuff for critique once in a while. I didn't expect much but its pretty good!
-
lol
I have that theme song so engrained in my head, this is perfect.

Haha
I was tempted to do the standard '2005 called and wants it's meme back' retort, but turns out it still makes me grin.

In fact I had the 50 one on a mix CD when I was at school
that's at least 6 or 7 years back. Good times.

The Luv NY album then
I'm enjoying this a lot. Really fantastic production job from Ray West and all the emcees sound great on it. Especially nice to hear Kool Keith on a project like this.
Also, did anyone listen to Smoke DZA's Rugby Thompson album? I've not exactly been blown away by him in the past, but for a whole project produced by Harry Fraud I thought it might have got some more attention. Seemed decent on the brief listen I gave it last night - gonna give it a proper look today.
-
Just tried to listen to these at work
As soon as the main Thomas theme kicked in a had a mini-meltdown. Glad there's barely anyone in the office at the moment :')
-
S DZA album is alright.
Luv NY is on spotify! about to listen.
-
I actually really enjoyed the DZA album.
I'd enjoyed most of his other albums to a degree but thought this one was his best so far. I wrote a review of it that I feel sums up how I feel about it pretty well, slightly dodgy grammar aside.
Also totally addicted to the Schoolboy feature on this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q572yBPxUaw

couple plays in and I have to say.....a little underwhelmed.
typical Ross fayre (multi layered, bragging about cars, lot's of 'uuuuugh'ing)
i'll be back with a progress report after play three -
Havent heard much praise for it.
WIll listen sometime this week.
-
Yeah, I've given it a few listens.
Definitely not as strong as Teflon Don or Deeper Than Rap, but sort of what I was expecting. I quite like So Sophisticated, but the other two trap songs are clearly BMF-lite. The best songs are the really extravagant sounding ones...Maybach Music IV and Sixteen are probably the standouts for me.
-
Nice review man
Still not sure how I feel about Smoke DZA, especially over a full project. But I can definitely see myself coming back to this for certain songs.
-
really didnt like it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCfoj2VDqZ4 quite enjoy this video though, even if the dre headphones bit is somehow worse visually than it is on record.

Luv NY sounds like a bit of a grower
Enjoyed the production, but by the time I was getting into it, it was over. Super short.
'Pressure Up' and 'Egyptology' jumped out though. Will be giving it more spins.

The only one I'm not particularly feeling is the De La one
looks a bit cheap.

Liking the new Brother Ali track - Mourning In America
Looking forward to this album, the tracks that have dropped so far are nice, and Ali still has mad skills. Entire record is produced by Jake One.
nill this'd this -
I was kinda hoping he would go another route
as far as production goes, although JO is a perfectly capable boom bap producer. I was hoping for something more theatrical and bombastic from him, although this track you linked is pretty theatrical. idk. I like Ali. I think he balances srs bzns with the right amount of self deprecation and fun. Just comes off like a nice genuine dude http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6g-hB2dAbE
-
I'll admit that Jake wouldn't be the name I'd choose to pair him with
But I think it's preferable to another record with Ant, and if the chemistry's right then it'll be a good'un.
Too much srs bzns ain't good, I tried to listen to some new Lupe Fiasco tracks earlier and I think he's got a humour tumour.
-
Lupes fall off was so drastic that I
have a hard time enjoying his earlier work, like how could he do us like this? idk, actually listening back now, he had some horrendous shyte mixed with some brilliance, his greatness was so overstated at the time, it seems.
-
Oh yeah, he always had his cringey moments
but at his best he was good enough that it didn't matter.
To me the first two albums (F&L in particular) were 'promising', some guy who had the skills & the contacts to make a really great album.
Now he's one of the most irritating figures in rap music, horrendously over rated by his fan boys who claim he's the GOAT. He bangs on about how there's no real rap music any more like it's 1998, completely oblivious to the face that he's fallen off a fucking cliff.
-
Heard an advance copy of the new Brother Ali
and I like it a lot - I'd say its probably his best since Shadow on the Sun. But then, I actually rate Jake One quite highly as producer, especially when it comes to tailoring beats to individual artists. Ali and JO gel really nice on this.
-
Kanye says he spent 5000 hours writing Power

Lol.

Hmm, can't really remember what's still to come
but off the top of my head;
Mr Muthafuckin eXquire
Main Attrakionz
Blu & Exile
Murs & Fashawn
Haleek Maul & Supreme Cuts -
What's coming out from the Main Attrakionz camp?
I've lost track recently, but it seems they've been a bit quiet.
Mr M ex, Murs x Fashawn & Blu x Exile are up there for me too.
Also looking forward to:

Kendrick Lemar
P.O.S.
A$ap Rocky
Maybe the new Mellowhype and T.I. idk. -
This POS thing was pretty cool:

Im looking forward to a Gunplay album (not sure when though) and Kendrick. Havent really been keeping tabs on upcoming stuff though.
-
Nah, not really,
couple random thrown together freestyles, although he is fun no matter what he's doing. I would just make sure you have Off Safety and Inglorious Basterd for now.
-
Yeah there was a bit of another song you said you enjoyed from me.
Just took it out and used it in this. Should probably delete that tune now.
-
for 3 tracks only

-
Jump Out is balls to the wall as well.
Yeah actually the Bogota Rich tape is pretty awesome, just short and full of freestyles, but you cant pass up on the bangers that are in there. Fuck Shit In My LIfe is cool too. Dude is just a tidal wave of energy, probably all that coke.
-
So the JJ DOOM album
It's actually pretty good, but you get the feeling that JJ hasn't really pushed DOOM outside his box, there's little here that DOOM couldn't have knocked up on his own. It's a nice production job, exceeding Born Like This, but idk, could use a few more surprises.
Problem with DOOM's ultra-prolific period in the mid 00s, is that when he drops something like this you still get the feeling he could knock off 3 or 4 of these a year... Not one every 3 years.
Gotta admire the man's consistency, but switch it up soon bro, or at least answer Madlib's calls.
-
Haven't heard anything good about this yet.
Ive kind of lost interest in Doom :/ Might try this to see if it gets me interested again.
-
I finally checked that new Aesop Rock.
Love it! Will bump that official thread when I gather my thoughts a little more.

Yeah, definitely one of the standouts of the year
and might well be his best album. Be interesting to hear your thoughts.

Pretty much exactly how I feel regarding the JJ part
I can never tire of listening to DOOM though and it's a decent album. 'Winter Blues' is especially brilliant I think.
-
Oh cool, I hadn't seen this
Exactly the kind of thing I was hoping this sub thread would deliver.

Guess I'm looking forward to Big Boi too, despite being indifferent to the singles so far

Waste of Miguel tbh.

Nice
Pretty spot on JJD review.
-
DOOMs up to his old tricks again
I have no fucking idea why anyone would pay DOOM to DJ(!) anyway, but at this stage I find it entirely unreasonable that anyone books him at all.
By some margine, the worst live hip hop artist I've ever seen (and c'mon, there's a fair few ropey performers out there), yet people often defend him. I've seen several positive reviews from Bloc ('DOOM SAVES THE DAY' etc.) when the show was absolutely fucking appalling, the closest music can come to being objectively and undeniably shite.
I haven't paid for any of his music/shows for a long time, and don't intend to until he sorts his act out. It appears there's a fine line between being a super villain and a lazy cunt.
-
I've got tickets to the Forum show
But mostly for Gibbs and Madlib, wouldn't be suprised if DOOM is shite/sends a fake. My mates that saw him with Ghostface last year said it was great though so you never know... This is bullshit though, knew it wasn't worth bothering with that night from the off, even Danny Brown's set was a letdown.
-
That show will still be great, cos the line up is sick. If he wasn't on the bill I'd be there in a flash.
Honestly, some DOOM stans seem to stick by him whatever, but for the couple of times I've seen him his live show is unredeemable. Same for every bit of footage or live recording I've come across.
He has all the classic issues that lead to bad live hip hop: Bass cranked up so you can't hear the music, the bass then obscures vocals, vocals are poorly set up anyway meaning you can't hear the lyrics, 'DJ' presses play & collects check, no live musicians (heaven forbid at a £25+ show) etc. The result? An unlistenable mess.*
What really puts the nail in the coffin though is that he's a completely uncharismatic performer, and doesn't even bother with a hype man to cover him. You can't shake the sinking recognition that a fat 40 year-old stoner in a mask is laughing at you... it ruins the illusion and it's ruined his music for many of my friends that have seen him.
IDK, I separate that shit from his music, but even so it's put a downer on even his best stuff for me. Maybe once in a while he does turn out a great show, but I very much doubt it, and I find it irritating that people are willing to put up with that shit.
*Honestly, if you've spent an entire career doing karaoke you'd think that you can at least get 2 things right: set up your fucking CD and vocals right.
-
You know what, I really thought this too
But I saw him sandwiched between Shabazz and FlyLo in Paris and he absolutely killed it. He brought the heat, got the crowd pumped, sounded great, even if it was over a backing tape. I was really really really surprised.
I am however mega worried about the tickets I just bought for me and my gf to go see Madlib> he was atrocious when I last saw him. Dunno why I'm chancing it again. I guess it was 5-6 years ago now.
-
Are you all gonna hate me when I say that Summer on Smash is fucking dynamite?
Heard it for the first time on DJ/Rupture's show. WOAH.
-
Hook is kinda blah in a 'irritating but will probably grow on me'
kind of way, but I do like the rest of it.
-
I absolutely love it. Reminds me of Dipset for some reason which I can't work out.
LIFE IS GOOD LIFE IS GOOD LIFE IS GOOD LIFE IS GOOD
-
Really out of place on the album
Apart from that it's pretty good... If the hook had been handed to Miguel instead it might've been legitimate fire.
For me Accident Murderers is WOAH.
-
Finally started listening to this album too.
I like this track a lot. Defo 90s flavor, would have fit just fine on any of his first few albums.
-
Yeah, it would sit pretty on It Was Written for sure
and I'm a big fan of that record.
-
I go off and on with all of his output.
I've pretty much loved and hated every album of his at some point (illmatic excluded). It Was Written is great to me now though.

I know what you mean
At one point I genuinely though Street's Disciple might be a classic :/
1 classic
2 great albums (It Was Written & Lost Tapes)
A handful of good eggs (Stillmatic, God's Son, Life is Good)
Some patchy shit (I Am, Streets Disciple, Hip Hop is Dead)
...
...
...

This is pretty much where I stand as well.
Altho I may through It was written in the classic status, but just not quite like Illmatic classic, you know?

Few interesting collabos on the soundtrack for RZA's movie
Ghostface, MOP and Pharoahe Monch on a track, RZA & Flatbush Zombies, and a new Clan song. Then again, there's also Corrine Bailey Rae...

-
Oh and new Kanye West too
Him and RZA seem to work well together, so that could be good.
-
Iamsu! has killed it this year
Featured on some of the biggest club tracks and released two great tapes. Deserves way more credit I think.
Prompted by this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=205K9Pim2oE&feature=player_embedded
-
Oh wait, wrong link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3wS2loaL3M
Although that Underachievers song is pretty cool too.
-
Just listened to that Stoopid track before, and I was pretty indifferent
But this Donnis track is incredible. Might check myself and reinvestigate.
-
In fact has no one mentioned Underachievers on this thread yet?
Gold Soul Theory is one of my favourite tracks around at moment
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_122Tx8xmg
Can't wait for the tape.

Niiiiice
Remember getting this tape but didn't give it much time. Might take another look.
Speaking of Young Dro though, I'm definitely looking forward to this https://twitter.com/dropolo/status/237645827932303361

Nice one, this is pretty weird.
Not like super weird but that awkward hook is great, Ive always had a thing for strangely sung/melodic hooks:

Ha yeah I think I know what you mean
This one springs to mind as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RWO0zbXr7k
-
rad
he's so captivating
-
That's fun,
Chicago needs to lighten up a little more like this.
-
This is cool:
100s 'Ice Cold Perm'
http://dreamcollabo.bandcamp.com/album/ice-cold-perm-2
Look like he is a Main Atrakioz affiliate or something? idk this sounds so much more polished than anything MA have done. Fully produced by Joe Wax and has a good coherent sound (basss) to it.album cover connection to Tha Doggfather (underrated imo) as well
-
I should add that there are a fair share of nastyraps
on this, so if that's not your thing then...
-
The Dopplegangaz are satisfying my boom bap itch.
I think I like them better than Joey Bada$$, but need to hear JB over some original beats.
-
What's with the production on that new Kanye song?
Sounds a bit shit.
Decent enough track apart from that, the hook, and Big Sean.
-
thought it was terrible
i think the problem with kanye recently is that his life is boring
and jay just needs to shut the fuck up, we get it, you're the best at everything. except when was the last time you actually were?
-
Well he is the best at having babies w Beyonce,
so +1 at the very least.
JaguarPirate this'd this -
I'm assuming Ye is using this GOOD Music album
to put out the music he wants to be making solo, but has little/no artistic credibility to justify it.
-
I've decided I really want a collabo album between T.I. & TNGHT
Old trap vs New trap. T.I.NGHT. Would be insane.
Anyone got any fantasy rap collabos?
-
Devin the Dude
and Danny Brown
-
Yeah, Devin's been pretty low key the last couple of years
but he's due a comeback, and the way DB's putting himself around I wouldn't put this one beyond the realms of possibility, at least for a track. Would be sick
-
Quik and Kendrick maybe?
Would be interesting.
littlebirds this'd this -
I like the sound of that
I think the Kurupt collabo proves that he could be just as effective in the new West as he was in the past. If Dre's getting dragged along for the ride, then getting Quik involved should be a no brainer.
-
Finally got around to checking this
It's nice. You weren't lying about those nastyraps. Nice to hear Joe Wax helm a full project too, really like what I've heard from him.
-
These are great
Worth getting the tape?
-
Yes.
I think those are the two highlights but its cool all around.
-
Well-tagged songs and good bit rate and
pretty good art are added bonuses as well.
-
Nice
Grabbing it now.
(It's pretty weird I've reached a state now where I debate whether to DL a free tape. Too much shit clogging up my hardrive I guess.)
-
ok, so Now You Do is amazing
just gonna work my way backwards through this thread
-
new Captain Murphy track, nice and woozy
Speculating my identity, good luck you'll never find me
-
Man, this new A$AP mixtape is DOPE.
A real game-changer.
-
This happened with my fav 90s thread
after the troll was banned and his posts were deleted. It messes the whole thing up real bad like, theo tried to fix it but it couldnt be patched :( To add insult to injury; that douche canoe only posted in here one time.
-
So unsurprisingly, the GOOD Music compilation is unremarkable
Little to recommend it unless you've bought into leaks so far. Monotone nu-trap, brought to you in association with Hudson Mohawke (who can be heard all over this, but never makes much of an impression). Neither explore the mutual love of maximalism that could've made them a great collabo.
Oddly enough, a load of the featured aren't on the label (R Kelly, The Dream, 2 Chainz, Raekwon, Chief Keef...) and some that you'd most like to hear (Mos Def, Q-Tip) don't show up.
Pretty sure he lost interest in this project a long time ago, and this should've been chucked out as a freebie.
-
hmm not really interested in hearing this atm.
Theres got to be a couple jams though right?
-
yeah
new god flow and, surprisingly, kid cudi's track are pretty decent. but i agree on the whole it's kinda a drag. r kelly & kanye was as underwhelming as it could have been :(
-
What does the hip-hop thread collective think...
should we ride this thread to tha death or fire up a new one?
-
Hmm...
I only listened once, but it's sounded like the most catagorically 'okay' album I've heard all year.
Nothing tanks, nothing soars.
The new New God Flow with Ghost is nice, the Kells track is cool...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oox24rczatw
Honestly, there's probably nothing else as bad as Cold, and nothing that comes close to Niggas in Paris.
-
Ha I kinda like it
But I'm a sucker for Kells, even on a weaker feature.
-
rolling hip hop thread two point oh all the way bro
we had a good time, but we gotta put this bitch to sleep.
Silkyskillz11 and JaguarPirate this'd this -
love the dude too
i think i just made the mistake of imaging the best of him and the best of kanye joined together in some kind of sexual paradise. then obviously i got nothing like that.
-
Yeah it was the one track I was looking forward to the most
and it's certainly not the ZOMG fest it could have been
-
Not as disappointing as Jay x R Kelly though
lest we forget :(
