itt: songs with awesome snares
Lets not limit this to any genre.
Lets also just get Refused out of the way here in the OP, we all know the snares are really good on Shape of Punk To Come, and if ya didn't know, know ya know.
Specific songs please, and label your links please.

Yah, the actual drumming is good,
but I want more prominence from the snare specifically, or maybe a little more unique sound/style(?)
-
Err... End Of Radio by Shellac
The Snare Drum! The Snare Drum!
-
That metronome sound is the snare (I think?)
I love it, it's such a unique drum sound
-
The Stills have a great drum sound
Mostly on the toms though, but the snare is pretty thick sounding and crisp. I remember seeing them live back in t' day and the drummer played his snare with the stick in his left hand flipped round to make it extra heavy weight:

Cool video also.
-
I always liked the drum sound on that LP.
Good call.
Appropriate user name btw.
-
antony and the johnsons-shake that devil
a couple CAN songs too

Lets not pretend I can do a thread without mentioning
some hip hop.
Busta Rhymes - Get You Some (produced by Dr Dre)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRSehnq0TfE -
kicks in at 4mins or so
you really need to listen to the intro to get the full effect of it's lameness though.

Fuck yes
Also, the bubbling mu'fin Bass Drum on this

Hadnt really considered Reggae but thats great.
Lots of reggae tracks I remember start with a nice little roll.
Robert Marley and the Wailers - So Much THings to Say

Deep Space 9mm <3
I bought the instrumental version of that LP for that song alone. Love the snares.
The snare is pretty repressed in the mix on that Dolphy track, but the drumming is out of this world.
I need some Neil Young in my life.
-
Love that track
One of the only good songs on Big Bang.
-
I love tracks like this.
That bass is so perfect with those drums.
-
El-P
Best snares in hip hop.

the lil snare roll before the blasts in Concubine - probably the most badass song moment ever

Nothing better than a whip cracking snare drum on a tune.
Having trouble remembering my favourites but these two spring to mine for their similar placing of the snare:
Petre Inspirescu - Sakadat
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfQnO_5rjj0
Oracy - Bass Mood
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xHwiMjt6xQ
Not to be listened to over shitty laptop speakers.

Even better in stereo when all the sounds are popping between the speakers.

Electric Lash — The Church
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9IRwVyQAc0
Unfortunately, it's not a very good recording, so the drums don't sound as crisp as they should — like machine gun fire:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9IRwVyQAc0
The rest of the album has a similar drum sound. Unbelievably, the album was critically maligned on account of the drum sound!
-
ah, damn
that second link was meant to be this:
-
Devil Sold His Soul - Awaiting The Flood
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luKIphsp4lE
Snare is great but to be fair the toms probably outdo it a little.
-
Naturally.
The new album cracks like crazy too, he loves himself a kick and a snare and has definitely crafted his own sound with those.
-
It's crazy that the snare almost matches the punch
of the kick while still maintaining clarity.
-
I'd say its between him, Black Milk, Dre aaaaaaand...
J Dilla. Listen to the lot of A Love Moment by Tribe Called Quest and you'll hear some of the best (and loud) drums in rap.
Love

So cool, loved it as soon as that first one hit.
I like the seemingly sporadic timing of both. The second link's snares sound a little warmer, real nice like though.
-
Sounds good to me.
What was the beef with it? Not like its St Anger.
-
No idea:
I love the drum sound, and Seance is easily my favourite Church album, but some people are a bit sensitive about these things, including the band themselves:
-"Most notorious among the fanbase and band members themselves is the heavily-treated drum sound, the work of mixing engineer Nick Launay. This somewhat fatal flaw has resulted in Seance being considered sub-par by some followers and given it a comparatively dated sound. Despite this frequent criticism, the tracks "One Day," "It's No Reason" and "Now I Wonder Why" are often considered standouts among the band's material."- (wiki)
-
Its all very strange to me,
never heard of Church btw.
-
Serious?
They're an Australian band, so that would ordinarily be understandable, but the Starfish album and "Under the Milky Way" were smash hits in the US:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-mQyRuHIuA
Then again, this was '87/'88, so it's probably understandable after all.
-
Yah I was born in 81
and really haven't listened to much rock like this, especially from the 80s. Not that I am opposed to it, there's just a lot of catching up to do and other stuff interests me more atm.
-
I get that pretty often around here, by the way.
I had never heard of the Libertines and I think DiS thought I was trolling, well Zapsta anyway.
Still haven't heard a Smiths song that I know of.
-
Great work here.
Converge was so good you had to link it twice, huh? Race In is very easily my favorite Battles track. Helmet have the best drums.
-
Incubus huh?
Alright JP, alright. Pretty good snares, I admit.
-
Libertines I can understand
but Smiths surprises me.
-
Kicks in between that 3-4 minute mark,
I was waiting patiently. Nice.
littlebirds this'd this -
oh, and I wouldn't expect that many DiSers to know the Church
it's just coz you is American that I thought you would have.
-
I really haven't done a deep dive into (indie?) rock prior to the mid 90s. I hated most anything with that 80s sound until about 4 years ago when I decided there was some good stuff there to be heard (after hearing Disentegration for the first time). I've got some major holes obv., but I'm not sure I care to fill them as of yet.

Adult contemporary r&b ftw
Sade - Soldier of Love

Look forward to hearing more in the morning.
The whole LP Butter by Hudson Mohawke has some cool snare work.
No One Could Ever

Snare playing? I think you need to check this out
Septicflesh's drummer is off the scale. One better than a blast beat - footpedal controlled snare for triple speed blast beating. Mental.
http://www.invisibleoranges.com/2011/03/septicfleshs-hellblast-technique/
-
Yeah the Oracy tune doesn't hit quite as hard.
But the Petre tune is definite personal favorite. Any track that has prominent snares and weird shit gets a thumbs up from me.
-
Flaming Lips - Slow Nerve Action
Probably my favourite drum track ever - so simple and repetitive but you FEEL the drum hits - also it helps that the rest of the song is great too
Starsexplode this'd this -
their drums are always incredible
This Here Giraffe, Spoonful Weighs a Ton, Race For The Prize ...
-
Excellent.
That's probably still my favorite JT track, put Clipse on the map too. That snare is bone dry and as tight as a frogs arse.
Forgot how he used to rock the bandanna under the trucker hat.
-
D'oh!
Gotta love that red wine/CTRL V combo!
I probably also meant this for the intro:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjZMySPcQfI
Also, not necessarily a song, but some of the best snare work I've ever seen. What a shame he's whoring himself to Pendulum.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b98BJ36K1wo
PS for the record, for the money they probably make, I'd whore myself to Pendulum in a hot minute.
-
Esoteric
Although it's written as "Esoterikku". Their drummer is incredible.
-
Great crisp sound on this Hypnotic Brass tune
plus the tuba is fucking crazy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=le4hvkJhCTc
Synthetic snares are good too and Mannie Fresh is the king of those 808 rolls
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXqjy7rWXPI -
The Cash Money sound
revolved around Mannie Fresh's drum rolls. He created such a unique sound at the time, producers have been ripping it for years since.
-
Has anyone said Deftones yet?
Most of their stuff, mainly Around the Fur.

Most amazing snare drum EVER. never heard something with so much crack in it, it's all because Dave Abracadarazzuezbra or whatever his name is was one of the best drummer of the 90's.
pity the rest of the song isn't that good but he's a fuckin monster on this track.
-
forgot how good that sounded
there's depth to go with the crack, which is really quite rare. Love the track as well
-
I'll see that grunge drummer...
and raise you another:
Soundgarden - Let Me Drown
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyNi-wjAs6w
My Wave
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=si2X27zdhs4I think Superunknown's drums are unparalleled, Matt Cameron was on one.
InsomniacBoy this'd this -
the snares on Low are great
especially sound and vision
especially the little roll fill at the very end of the fade out -
also, this!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Kaz1y2z2OE
even if it is quite digitised, the snares in the middle are superb.
-
Matt Cameron is my favourite drummer
His work on Head Down and Mind Riot is amazing, I sat in my room learning all of Badmotofinger and Superunknown before getting completely stumped by those mothers.
-
Seeing this track live in the main room of Fabric
Felt like my insides were being rearranged. In an amazing way.

Don Caballero 3
from What Burn Never Returns. Such a fucking awesome drummer is Damon Che. Listen to the ring on the snare, particularly at 1:15. It's sounds like no other snare drum i've heard.

I've remembered.
