OFWGKTA
These kids are pretty deranged, but really talented with it. I've been on a mission to find some new hip-hop thats worth a listen and its been tough but these guys have caught my ear. They're pretty disgusting, disturbing and down right wrong with their lyrical content but it coems off like a mad cartoon half the time. The beats are pretty odd ball but still banging, one moment you think they're gonna go a bit backpacker on ya but it never really happens. They can flow and make beats big time, its suprisingly addictive for a bunch of adolesent skater goons obsesed with sex.

yeah
they are really wrong, they somehow make it sound like a mad cartoon/concept. They're so young I can't take them serriously. I'm torn about it too.
-
i get the feeling
that its all tongue in cheek - Andrew Nositsky notes in the Wire article that none of the guys seem like the type to carry the thoughts and feelings they express in the songs. They're young and I assume they like getting a rise out of people
but theres definitely something there, EARL is the best out of the mixtapes I've heard so far -
This is really, really awful.
There's much more worthwhile hip hop out there.
-
I've tryed those...
Big Krit, Drake, Gibbs peeps and they're all awful though. Pill and Gucci are about the best but Pill is kinda boring a lot of the time and Gucci is a bit one note, its a good note but you have to be in the mood for it. Oh yeah Big Boi is good but thats a given. These guys are kinda out there but have a load of talent dispite being a disgrace with their content. Any more suggestions? If the good stuff is out there I aint finding it, I'm getting pretty convinced hip-hop is in really bad shape right now. Its like the new indie haha Always looking though cos hip-hop is always creative somewhere, looks like its just the producers at the mo though, and these goons.
-
Earl is the best yeah
the beat on that track on the vid is insane. Really raw and agressive but with killer low slung breakbeats with a load of funk to them. He flows on it well too. Dunno how they get it to work.
-
disagree
this is really, really brilliant.
a buddy's recomendation and the wire article came simultaneously. earl mixtape is wicked, i love the juxtaposition between their doofus cartoon character bullshit and the world-weary beats. the film noir shit on wakeupfaggot is hilarious, esp when it cuts out for- "WHY DON'T YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP MOM". really on point word play, kids clearly aren't idiots and know exactly what they're doing, funny dudes.

Wasn't expecting that. These guys have been picked up pretty fast. Wouldn't be suprised if they took off pretty big this year.
-
I tried listening to Tyler The Creator on my way to the gym one night.
It didn't work, but only because of my mood. I almost didn't feel comfortable listening to him in public.
-
yeah
I can't get over that they're gonna be on Fallon next week, wonder how that'll turn out. To be honest I hope they take off, they're talented enough to deserve it and one of the few voices in hip-hop at the moment thats totally, genuinely unique, (I think). More than anything I'm just impressed that a few kids can build something totally from the ground up and be this successful with it.
looking forward to Goblinthis'd this -
cool innit
They have a strong foundation cos they have such a unique production style as it is, the beats are so raw and noisy but just kill it. Plus they have a fuck ton of personality which they carry off really well.
-
MellowHype > Earl > Tyler
Are my fave releases so far from htis lot, in that order. What you guys feeling?
-
I really like it!
Trying to find out who is booking their UK & Europe dates cos they are playing Primavera
-
Very fond of Bastard
so I'll definitely make a point of listening properly to Mellowhype and Earl soon, if your >'s are anything to go by
-
Same I reckon, then probably Radical after that.
Fuck The Police off the Mellowhype tape is probably my favourite OF tune overall.
-
Radical
is amazing even though its a mixtape so doesnt showcase their beat skills. Gonna look into MellowHype next too.
Generally odd future are just dazzlingly sick its more the relentlessness and volume of what they put out that impresses me. Truly impulsively creative people.

-
This is a strange release.
I like some wet r&b but this really just isn't that good.
-
its a load of arse
wasn't expecting that at all FUCK GOLF WANG!
-
Haha,
at least it was free I guess.
-
You have successfully put me off listening to this. Doesn't really matter if one record flops with them though, eh?
-
lol
indeed
They should stick to the rap stuff. This guy isn't very good at all, I bet they try and use him for loads of hooks on their offical albums and fail. What is it with hip-hoppers wanting hooks as soon as they get signed? lol
-
I think Tyler's solo joint is
what will determine their future monetarily. The problem with releasing anything that isn't quality with your label/gang name stamped on it is that it waters down the hype and it sets the trust back a little. Maybe not by much, but it happens. This happened with No Limit Records and Wu Tang in the 90s. After a while you didn't know what was legit or not and it got to hard to stay on top and sift through the rubble. People lost interest. Not saying this is the turning point or anything, I just hope they keep their quality control in check.
-
I dunno man.
Its the great rap conundrum isn't it?
jimitheexploder this'd this -
nah its fine
they've had misses before, just not this bad lol. I'm just playing up to their abusive hype powers cos I'm bored, still got an eye on them for sure. haha
-
Same here.
But now's not the time to be slippin'.
-
I know
they need to chill and let the hype roll a bit longer before getting some wet dude to sing a bit. Tease the fucks a bit longer I say!
-
They don't want to be dropping the ball all over the place
But when it's free, and the general quality is so high, if they try something and fuck up no kids are going to unlike the Free Earl facebook group or cancel their order for a Supreme hoodie

i think

Syd, who produces a load of the OF stuff is out as a lesbian, so....
-
it ties in the whole
'don't give a fuck' mentality really, they just say whatever they like. theyre too oddball and playful to take any of it as homophobia, especially when syd is gay and tyler's yonkers songs features lyrics about dancing around in panties to marvin gaye.

"Is that because you guys have violent videos about murder?
That’s it. People want to put us in a box, ?but every horror-core rap group I’ve looked ?up sucks.Like Gravediggaz?

http://pitchfork.com/features/articles/7940-odd-future-mixtapes/
Looks like a nice enough guide for anyone wanting to jump in.
-
Every horror-core rap group I've looked up sucks
Eminem's more horror-core-y side is maybe their main influence! I know one listen to Niggaz4Life could twist your morals into writing songs about rape & murder, but in reality they probably take more of their shit from the horror-core scene. I don't know... they probably never came into contact with Gravediggaz, but they're missing out.
-
Just read this
Pretty good guide, but I'd rather listen to 5th Echelon than Nostalgia, Ultra any day.
-
yeah
I tryed to give Nostalgia, Ultra another go just go but it was even worse the second time lol. I hope that guy doesn't have much else to do with these guys he's a massive weak link.
-
I'd prob just recomend the big three...
Bastard, Earl and MellowHype, those are the real solid keepers anyway. The rest have good and bad bits, worth a listen if you dig those three apart from Ultra lol...
-
AMAZING
Can't wait to see them at Primavera.
-
i actually think this is alright.
haven't made it thru the whole thing yet
i really like Novacaine. it's not the most hook-laden thing ever, but the beats and the lyrics have some kind of twisted zoned-out sensuality that i quite like. don't know whether it's gonna get more than like 2 plays, and yeh it's pretty wet but don't think it's as bad as you all made out.and i like the fact apparently the dude writes lyrics for justin bieber. cool.
-
He reminds me of Coldplay
More than any kind of R&B. Its just a load of nothing, there isn't anything to pull me in at all. No hooks, no beats, no music, no feeling, I need that before lyrics or you may as well be an R&B Elbow. The best thing about him by far is that he writes lyrics for Justic Bieber, thats a cool job. Imagain what you could get the lil dude to sing!
-
New MellowHype

-

-
BEEF!
B.o.B comes back to Tyler for that Yonkers diss:
-
this is odd
weak in the sense that after a line like "i'll crush that fucking airplane that that faggot nigga B.O.B. is in" he only flirts with any kind of direct reference to odd future by saying "you've got no future".
good in the sense that this is a lot harder than the average b.o.b. song so maybe he's responding to it in a friendlily competitive way by showing his harder side. the only reaction so far has been tyler saying it was surprisingly good
-
lol
looooooooooooooooooooooool
-
I can't remember the last time
I heard two American MCs go at it...
They must have gone soft or something. I can't remember one since the 90s tbh. I must be wrong... there must be a good war with dubs in the last 20 years from America? Anyone have any idea? or will I have to dig out some Trim and Wiley grime wars again?
lol bob
-
50 cent tried to take on everyone in the early 00s
There's been loads really, its all kinda lame to me, the whole "BEEF" thing. Was kinda compelling in the 80s-90s but the last good one to me was Nas/Jayz and LL cool J/Canibus.
-
yeah but fiddy isn't very good
I want to hear quality MCs like Wiley and Trim go at it... but you know Americans.
Whats the US: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8_qsu2acrw or even: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCoyc4H5RLg / http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KC0BjpHNmBU lol
-
Beef is good
It brings out the best in an MC it makes them think on their feet and go for it with fire and energy. If you can't take some fuck on as an MC you're in the wrong game. Of course we only have about 4 guns in the whole of the UK compared to the UK so MCs can get really angry instead of beign gay and shooting each other lol
-
*US
Those are the guys with guns...
lol
-
For some reason
I can't download Bastard or Blackendwhite from their tumblr. It says the files don't exist.
HELP.
-
think theyve been removed
since both tyler and mellowhype got signed, especially as blackenedwhite is getting released by fat possum. also something about them not being able to perform earl sweatshirt songs anymore.
definitely not swag.

-
GOLFTANG
cool way to respond to all the wu-tang comparisons and their apparent previous unawareness of the wu music
-
That video is really well put together.
made me feel sick.
-
I haven't heard this yet, but fuck were they not aware of Wu
that Wolf Gang chant? I even saw an interview when one the gang said Wolf Gang is for the children...
-
not unaware of the music
just keen to distance obvious links, citing other rappers as main influences and feigning not TOO much knowledge of wu-tang, dismissing gravediggaz comparisons, etc.. one of the first things a lot of people did was to compare them to wu-tang and they tried to shake it off, which is fair imho.
-
So the video for yonkers is probably the best music video i've ever seen
I don't care if i'm massively late to this party, its fucking great. Reminds me why i need to read jimi's posts on here, even if the rest of you seem to be happy debating which The National album is best OVER AND OVER

What *is* going on?
-
lol
thanx yes_ I did accidently get into them fairly early it seems when I posted this I never expected them to kick off quite so much.
-
to be fair
this sounds like hyper-reactive journalism. it sounds like, like most people, she caught wind of the odd future buzz at sxsw and talked about them and then someone asked if she'd collaborate with them and when she responded positively to the idea they made it a headline. her lead quote definitely looks like an answer to a question
-
Earl is in boarding school?

To be fair to Eliza Doolittle:
http://blog.elizadoolittle.com/2010/11/09/ofwgkta/
This was at their first show in London way before Yonkers made them huge. -
yeah
read somewhere that tyler was having a few issues with the album because he'd got someone else, also under 18 as a guest on the song 'bitch suck dick' and, for some reason than seems impossible to fathom, their parents wouldnt give permission for them to be featured on it.
-
"Oddfuture blew my mind"- Brightonb 2011
Anything that ever blows my mind I usually never find exciting.
-
yeah, exactly
what are you gonna do, buy the album and just enjoy it less than the rest of us on purpose?
-
I guess he's quoting there right
but still odd future are actually fucking amazing. They've got the whole package: funny, honest lyrics, fucking cool videos, this whole attitude and AWESOME PRODUCTION and i'm not even jealous that they're younger than me and succesful as I would be in almost any other situation, just really happy for them. Don't really care if I get called a hipster for it cos of WOLF GANG
Earl is my favourite MC out of them all though, wish he'd come back. FREE EARL.
-
i really agree
although having earl absent kind of helps them in a way, just creates an extra layer of intrigue and mystery having this kid who's one of the youngest in the group yet also arguably the most talented and definitely the most deranged, MIA.
-
I wonder
how that briefly hyped synthpop band Wolf Gang are feeling these days.
-
comically bad timing.
My heart nearly skipped a beat when i heard Wolf Gang had been added to the great escape festival in brighton. i hope they get at least an average of three attendees at each of their gigs turning up in a home made free earl t-shirt and leaving forlorn.

in the same way Pink Eyes was on the front of the NME, ie carefully hidden inside a polythene bag displaying something more supermarket magazine shelf-friendly.
-
Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury
Pharrell is a clear influence on odd future production, and this album is shit hot.
badmanreturns this'd this -
Well, production
is where they are more unique than most. They're all good to semi-good rappers, but the lo-fi-ish bass-clipping boomy sloppiness of their production is something else. Its an aesthetic that is kind of their own, even if its built around a familiar framework.
Main Attrakionz is a good call.
I might also look into:
>>>> Roc Marciano - Marcberg
Has a similar bedroom lo-fi quality to it, but more boom bap than OF, and more uh... mature, as far as rapping ability goes (more in the NY hard rap vein, less fantasy driven, less shocking, less fun?).
Panic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmA1gVokGCU
Pop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VriANJHAgRw
Snow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzAS8tnxx2o>>>> Danny Brown - The Hybrid
He also has a few mixtapes and random tracks on youtube. This guy is what you want if you want slightly psychotic rhymes and some shock value. But like OF, he can chameleon himself into any style of rap. He just sounds like he's not right.

I only listened to it for the first time at the end of last year
So I've been listening to it a few times a week ever since. Every time I listen to it I'm a little bit staggered by it - the delivery, the production, the wordplay; all absolutely fantastic. Goes straight into that special group of hip-hop albums that I'll never tire of (alongside 36 Chambers, Funcrusher Plus, Low End Theory/Midnight Marauders and The Cold Vein).
-
I found it really cold the first couple times I listened to it.
But it was just so different to anything I was listening to at the time (even raps), I was strangely attracted to it and before long I was feeling it.

Alright, I was wrong
I'm still interested to see where this is going now it's edging closer to some sort of mainstream coverage, because at the moment it's the Independent's SXSW reviewer claiming they were a letdown who only did three tracks at their show (which apparently they did, at one of their seven gigs that festival) and Radcliffe & Maconie going "Earl Sweatshirt? LOL!" the other week.

Haha
What a nutter.
-
it's pretty incredible how popular Odd Future/Tyler are
considering how much of it is supposed to be intentionally disruptive or transgressive. It's pretty much pure art on their sake, but its kinda funny how a lot of Tyler's main anti-"hipster" rhetoric is paradoxically making him and enjoyed by hipsters.

I mean he got a few answers out of them despite the fact that they blatantly didn't want to do a "classic" interview like that. After zane realised this he called them out on it then adapted to what they wanted to do. Would'ave been worse if he'd persevered with the usual interview questions.

until a friend posted a video of some kids covering Sandwitches on Facebook (and I was like "Wtf? Is this a real song?")/their performance on Fallon, which was good, yeah, so I downloaded the studio version of Sandwitches, and I was like "Oh... This isn't as good". And then earlier today, I watched the Yonkers video on Pitchfork, and I didn't think much of that either. I mean, it's good RAP, but musically, it's pretty uninspiring, no? That's how I felt.

Try the MellowHype and Earl stuff, Zappy.
If you like the live version of Sandwiches it might be more up your street. I'm not too excited by Tyler's stuff either.

k, I'll give it a go

-
I think whats so attractive about them
is that they're all about 18/19 doing it all themselves and doing it well. They've also done well to cultivate their image/persona/"mythology" with the "uniform" and the free earl stuff.
They're basically just really really exciting.
and as he says at the end of sanwitches "We don't fucking make horrorcore, listen deeper to the music"
-
Its definitely been smitten by the hype machine,
in a MAJOR way too. And its hard to actually just look at the music and judge it for what it is anymore. Its all wrapped in this HYPE SWAG ITS FUKKIN AWESOME SO FUKK YOU IF YOU DONT GET IT YOU KRUSTY BUFFOON facade.
I think they get FAR too much credit for originality, definitely agree with that, I mean, at its core, its just rap over some fairly unique beats. If they deserve a nod for originality, its in the production, which is the main reason I like them. Like you said, others have been doing similar lyrical things for some time, whether they (or their fans) want to admit it. I think they are just kind of young and exciting and brash and outspoken and the media needs something like that to splash over and challenge the reader/listener once in a while, make people take sides. For people that have been around rap for a while, its nothing new to fawn over, but it can be kinda fun to get behind.
-
for me, being someone whos devoted to hip-hop
but too young to have experienced a lot of the seminal stuff as it went on, its just exciting to have something that feels like such a breath of fresh air and of the moment, even if it isn't quite as unoriginal as it seems. to be honest its more about the production for me anyway, which I think is one of the most unique sounds doing the rounds at the minute. its just nice to have something that I think is great and to actually SEE it develop. even when I was seventeen falling in love with def jux, i'd still kinda missed the boat.
-
Not really no, I think he's pretty gifted on the boards though.
But I do love (or have loved):
Ice T
Gravediggaz
Brotha Lynch
Geto Boys
Insane Poetry
Too $hort
NWAetc
who all endulged in shocking lyrics at some point in their careers.
-
oh i yeah i like all those people (apart from Insane Poetry who i need familiarise myself with) but i would not disagree w/ that part.
agree on the nothing to fawn over too, and comparing that to the hype does make me go, err? what? and feel a more ambivalent about them (esp. compared to Main Attrakionz). but when that shit nme article linked them to childish gambino and that shit dude wrightylew made a thread about yesterday does make me think thank fuck these guys are getting massive instead of all that really awful stuff that could appeal to the indie-rap pound/dollar.
-
Thats where all the Wu Tang comparisons come from.
The music isn't very similar obv, but its that feeling of THIS IS NEW TO ME AND ITS AMAZING AND WTF AM I LISTENING TO that draws the parallels. You feel like your part of this pack that you're going to grow with, part of this sub-culture that your parents just wouldn't understand or appreciate. I felt that with wu, I was part of it, it was special for me/us... so enjoy this.
But with this type of thing you're always gonna get old heads (like me) coming around being like "this is nothing new guys, c'mon now, listen to xxxx and yyyy and you'll see"... but who cares really. When I was young(er) and getting into music, I didn't want to hear that mess, I wanted MY OWN thing. I didn't want the previous generations music. Eventually your tastes round out and come full circle and you begin to appreciate the back-story and the origins of where it all started, but you have plenty of years ahead for that.
-
Looks like Goblin has leaked
But Tyler has put a load of fake leaks with Celine Dion tracks out :D
-
This
Except my dad loves odd future. Daaaaaad! But yeah, I don't think how original their music is matters that much. The way they're doing things/their age/approach etc is pretty exciting and the music is good! I'm mostly just excited for the return of Earl.
-
1.2 hours
eek!
-
43. Put Yonkers on a mixtape for him and when I spoke to him next he said how much he loved Bastard!
-
I don't think Odd Future will ever touch
Niggaz4Life in terms of immorality, that record could corrupt anyone.
-
god damn I love bitches especially when they only suck dick & wash dishes
WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEL
-
their "performance" is like the most important bit though
the crazy live shows, the music videos, the internet skits/accounts, the image. It's so striking.
I'll admit in retrospect my comment reads pretty badly, what I more mean that they're confirming rap as an art form
-
it's good RAP, but musically, it's pretty uninspiring
what a strange comment, surely the Rap is the focal point, the rest is production.
-
totally agree dude,
they fit a new generation of people who are into hip-hop (having a renaissance due to the internet/p4k) and this is THEIR GROUP. A group like this who is totally internet savvy in a currently in-vogue music genre was basically waiting to happen and explode. I'm still to be convinced whether they're actually that amazing ('Yonkers' is still the only really amazing track IMO) but their general presence is pretty exciting/interesting
-
It's more nuanced than that though, isn't it
The vocabulary of hip-hop is so limited. I look down upon you all.
-
Like no one ever talks about song structure in hip-hop, do they
Or the tone of a rappers voice. No one ever talks about that. Why is it any less relevant in hip-hop than it is in any other genre of music? It isn't to me. FUCK.
-
I talk about that stuff all the time.
Pretty much all I talk about anymore really.
-
the
crowd looks like what I imagine Hadoukens crowd to look like. No problem with the band though!
-
ahahahahaha
someone i know downloaded a fake leak. it was "in the aeroplane over the sea" :'D
-
I know he can be a bit of a try hard
But I really like Zane Lowe, thought he dealt with this pretty well.
Certainly the best of a terrible, terrible bunch of presenters on the nations biggest radio station. They really need to get Colin Murray back in.
-
This, definitely this!
I'm totally inexperienced when it comes to Hip Hop so this is pretty new to me, and I like it. If it opens up doors to other artists then great, I'm all for that.
Can totally understand where people are coming from with the 'its unoriginal' and 'overhyped' angles, I've thought that about plenty of bands from genre's of music I'm more used to.
-
Haha
Yeah, I got this one too.
-
It's the potential for me
One of the most important ingredients for me in making great hip-hop is to have producers and rappers who are on the same wave length, and here's a bunch of kids who do it all in-house and are clearly determined to make their own sound... to a certain extent they already have done. That's a pretty big achievement for teenagers, and I think a lot of excitement is over what they *could* do rather than what they have done. The crazy thing about The Wu was they emerged as the complete package, OFWGKTA clearly are not, but it's great to watch rappers developing in a way you rarely get a chance to.
-
Too long IMO
I mean, they haven't been know for quality control, but it took me 3 sittings to get through it. Needless to say there's some great music on it though.
-
Just started listening
this first track is a bit... Hmmmm. Preferred it when they weren't giving a fuck about critics/hype etc

I'm holding out on more opinions on them until I hear the album I mean I've not heard a thing but the single and Frank Ocean lol since they got singed so haven't really been able to comment. Hope MellowHype is next for an offical album he's maybe the best since Earl is out the picture for now.

Think Blackendwhite is being properly released,
that's why it's not available on the OF tumblr anymore. Definitely looking forward to that.
-
Not impressed.
Its about 40 minutes too long and waaaaaay toooooo ploddddddding. Every beat is the same tempo and not nearly as experimental as I expected it to be. The song 'Radicals' is a good example of why I dont like it (sorry antpocalypse); 7 minutes long, slow, boring, and brought down by a lame chorus. The schtick is a little too much, Its all coming off as very "try-hard." There's not enough balance and its sequenced like a slug. Meh
-
ugh dis
ive only heard that youtube with the samples, which obviously is no way to listen to an album, got me a bit worried. i'll give it a lot of time though and i'm sure it'll have good moments
all he needed was about ten tracks, roughly 35 minutes. done. the only person who can vaguely get near to getting away with 1hr+ rap LPs is kanye
-
arse
well they where always going to be one of those groups that either thrived under the spotlight or went really shit. They're mad sesitive and young so they where bound to be pushed pretty swift with this attention. I just hope you're wrong lol (you're prob not though haha)... It kinda suprises me though Tyler was always the best at beats so wonder why he flaked here.
-
The beats arent BAD per se,
just too samey. Not enough variation in things as simple as tempo or texture. The album has no room to breath, just one long giant downer, which may be good if your in the mood for that, idk.
-
yeah i'm really dissapointed with it
:(
Like half the songs are about "getting back" at his dad or at school or at the hype and all that and i'm all like "give a fuck, get back to being hilarious and playful and exciting".
once earl finally gets freed maybe that will save OFWGKTA
I dunno I really hope this grows on me but I don't think it will.
-
LOL
COMPANY OX
-
Yeah it's pretty disappointing
I echo the beats thing. Not feeling it. His immaturity is way more pronounced than it was on Bastard.
-
even though Tyler is the Creator, I find he's one of my least favourite OF members
except for Sandwitches, I don't really like all that many of the songs he's attached his name to. I even find Yonkers a bit meh. I thought Bastard was boring and same-y. and on the Radical mixtape, his songs are the ones I'm most likely to skip. even with Sandwitches I find I'm more inclined to watch the video from Fallon instead of listen to the recording, which captures nil of the excitement in the video. when I do listen to the recording, it's usually to hear Hodgy Beats' verse and to mime along with 'uuuuuhhhhhhhhhhh FUCK CHURCH'.
anyway, it was Earl and Hodgy Beats/MellowHype and Frank Ocean that made me think 'wow, these Odd Future kids are really something'. its mostly their songs that I return to listen to over and over, and who I'm most excited to hear of in the future (if'n Earl is ever freed).
Tyler is a great mastermind and everything, but it seems like he's a little too over self-indulgent and can't reign it in. he'll probably grow over the years, though, and become truly great.
-
This, a lot.
Goblin's pretty boring for me, too slow paced with little change in direction. Yet they seem to take it up a lot of notches when playing live at least. I'm sure the MellowHype release will make up for it, as well as live performances.
-
I'm liking "Goblin" so far
Yeah, its far less immediate and energetic than some of the other OF stuff (although, for me at least, "Bastard" took a lot of listens to really get into; the really immediate OF stuff for me is like "Rolling Papers" and "Earl") but I don't see how it is necessarily a bad thing that it lacks those qualities.
The thing I'm struggling with is whether the album is truely dark (and I'm talking about Tyler's lyrics about fame and friends and his relationship with his mother, not the "KILL PEOPLE BURN SHIT FUCK SCHOOL" stuff) or whether Tyler is just exaggerating all his emotions the same way he exaggerates all the "nasty" blog-baiting stuff. I don't really know how to take a lot of the lyrics on here.
-
thats it
Tyler has potential but isn't quite there but has been thrust into the light prob cos the others aint as outgoing and some lable jumped on who ever they could get first. If he gets time he'd prob kill it but right now I'm not sure.
-
I'm in a similar position with it
I don't know how to take all the 'deep' personal stuff on this album - which is quite interesting, at first, if it's all honest - when he counteracts it with the rapekillingshockLOL stuff. Its a bit of a strange one.
The album itself is wayyyyy too long and samey and a bit indulgent, but he's got the potential to make something really good. Just this isn't really it. Pitchfork will jizz all over it though.
-
Bitch Sucks Dick almost saves this album from being too dark and boring
i love when jasper/taco get a chance to rap its fucking hilarious
-
I've got to say, my only real complaint is it being 80+ minutes long.
Cut out 35 minutes or so and it would be the best OFWGKTA record yet.
-
Aye, they could really use a bit of quality control
But which hip-hoppers couldn't really?
-
So basically Goblin isn't that great yeah?
There's WAY too much use of the pitched down voice effect. The whole being in therapy thing is mega naff and along with this weird desire to justify his music and 'address' his critics just comes across as a bit desperate and lame.
But aside from that it just doesn't work as an album. As other people have said its way too long, pacing is terrible, every song is a mid-placed plodder (more bangers/ballads please) and I think it needs more guest spots as Tyler's just doesn't have enough vitality in his voice to hold your attention alone for so long. It just lacks that playful kids fucking about vibe of the other releases.
I think Yonkers, Analog, Tron Cat, She and Bitches Suck Dick are the only really great tracks.
-
yeah thats the word I was looking for, "naff"
i dunno i was listening to prince paul the other week and it really works on that album
-
nah.
BlackenedWhite is the best for sure.
-
idk, i really like Bastard
sure, a lot of the criticisms that seem to be being levelled at the new one could apply to that, overlong, one-paced, could have a bit more diversity, interesting concept/theme done fairly hamfistedly (although from what i'm hearing, they apply far more to Goblin)
but its probably my second favourite odd future release. the character really comes through, there's a bit of diversity and the guest spots are mostly great.
i'd say the majority of it is merely pretty good but mostly just an interesting unrefined 'character' who shows potential to be great, but on tracks like Bastard, French, Seven, AssMilk he's already there imo
-
*3rd
blackenedwhite (probs the only truly exceptional release)
EARL
bastard
nostalgia, ultra
the journey to the 5th echelonhavent really listened to the others to make a list beyond that, dont really rate radical that much
-
If EARL was a bit longer it would be their best
i want earl back
-
Of the other rappers Domo Genesis is alright.
Pretty standard weed rap. I like Mike G a lot though, he's probably the most underrated member.
-
To be fair, I think this is been something that hip-hop has been getting better at in recent years
82 minute bloated albums seem like a bit of a step back now.
-
True
Still get the odd bloated album and there's still a willingness to just chuck anything out. I guess the internet mixtape culture has stopped that infiltrating proper releases so much now though.
-
I managed half of it on my way to work this morning.
So far - not enough change in pace, some of the songs are far too long. He also seems far more self conscious then I thought he would. Some the lyrics seem to touch on things that would have only really come up in the last couple of months.

agree with pretty much everything in there, unfortunately.
-
I honestly don't get the backlash
I'm assuming those who are slagging it off hadn't really heard much Odd Future before? I mean, if you told me Tyler was going to release and 82 minute record this is exactly what I'd expect. Slag it off all you like if you just downloaded it for the hype, but if one week ago you were saying SWAG SWAG SWAG and now your jumping off the bandwagon you can't have been a fan of their music in general in the first place. If it was another free mixtape it would be plenty good, and lets face it, that's what it would've been if a major label hadn't picked it up.
-
*an
*you're
-
Nah, Goblin just really isn't that good.
When you say "their" music you are referring to the collective, not just specifically Tyler's music. But like I said, THIS PARTICULAR album is poor, regardless of price, hype or bandwagons.
I think everyone has articulated their actual reasons for not liking it, not like people are just jumping on baord like O DAMN SON THIS SUCKS BALLS HAHAHAHA, YALL GOT SUCKAAAAA'D.
Honestly though, what do you like about it?
-
Honestly, I didn't love Bastard
And I don't particularly love this, but I'd say the general quality is at least as good & if it was cut down to a similar length would be a stronger overall record. I can't say too much after 2 listens to what amounts to 2 albums worth of material, but there's enough cuts I'm digging already that it makes it a worthwhile release for me. I'm shocked that (apart from the length) people were expecting something much different from what they got, I'm not shocked that they don't like it.
-
So, I'm willing to admit when I'm wrong
This ain't as good as Bastard (which was probably a 7 for me). A few choice cuts doesn't make up for the monotony, and while this can't be blamed on the length alone, the production, subject matter and delivery all get fairly tired. Seriously, could I give a shit that he's a tiny bit famous now, or that HE'S NOT BEING SERIOUS WHITE AMERICA.
I still think, that when he's on, Tyler is my favourite member & I'm sure several of these cuts will jump out at me over time (a lot of Wolf Gang stuff has taken a while to sink in for me). He's not the best technically, but he's certainly the most compelling & to be honest I expected a little more of this album too. Obviously, BlackenedWhite is still the best OF release, but I there is more to come and Tyler is hopefully just finding his feet.
-
A couple of listens in now.
I really like it.
Yeah, wee bit long I guess and I maybe preferred bastard but I still think this is a really good album. One of the best I've heard this year.

He did everything right on Yonkers
What the hell happened to the rest of the album? The first track ruins any chance of the album having momentum, and I'd just like to point to Radicals and say 'don't do that.' And it's really horrible for a controversial artist to try to pre-empt criticism in the music. It just seems like he shouldn't care and it makes his delivery on Radicals seem disingenuous.

There's a 2nd London date now
July 6th

hmmmm I think I disagree
About the pre-empt criticism point. Its criticisms that have already been attributed to them and why shouldn't he care? He's a few days younger than for christ sakes, I know if I was shoved into the limelight I would care and personally I think he's done the right thing by laying everything he has on the table at this point.
Does that make it a great album? No. Does it make it a really interesting album? I would say so.
With everything that's gone on, I feel like this is almost the best album Tyler (or even OF as a collective) could release. It'll calm a few people down with the hype trains and yet give them somewhere to springboard from.
Anyway, "I just want to take her like a pirate. aaarggghhh!" How can you not like!
'Her' is the best song on the album. FACT!

this is an article.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2011/may/09/hip-hop-homophobia
i dont agree w/ it but i think the point about who ofwgkta are trolling is an interesting one -
Of course they're not
But the subject matter isn't that different. The point is that Tyler's homophobic/rape language is quite clearly a work of fiction. He doesn't rape and kill people and doesn't condone it either. Its obviously an oversimplification to just say, "Its a rap version of Sarah Kane from a male standpoint." But there are points of intersection.
Basically, Its a 21st century Lord Rochester.

a lot of the people speaking out against them now
are white people with almost no prior interest in hip hop
that's not to say people previously into hip hop don't dislike them too, but the 'intellectual' discourse being thrown up about them is quite clearly coming from people who don't even like rap and hip hop, talking as if they can fairly evaluate tyler's lyrics in an accurate context. by the same token, there was an awful lot of "oh it's a bit long isn't it?" which isn't the worst thing in the world but it all adds to the white middle class nausea surrounding them.

Really this
So good to see a long-form, well written article about them: so much about them recently has descended into sub-Hipster Runoff hype ditchwater and they deserve a lot of better.
Refreshing to see Earl come across as so thoughtful and articulate too - makes a nice change to the "lol that's gay" Tyler soundbites that've been proliferating of late (not that they don't have their place, perhaps).
-
^this
So funny to see jumped up indie pricks having their first interaction with rap and having no idea that having nasty lyrics in rap is not a new thing by any means. But they feel the need to claim authority on something they have no knowledge of because it's "think piece material" and they need to have something to say. Kind of lame that those sorts of opinions are being given credence, but whatevs.

Went to see them
in Birmingham last night, not quite sure to make of them live, the sound seemed too muddied, with the rapping sort of lost in the bassiness of it, but the spectacle of the gig, the crowd was great to watch as they all went crazy (from my 'i'm too old for this shit' position at the back of the room, that said I do think I was at least 9/10 years older than the majority of the crowd)and the energy on the stage from the group was good too. Glad I went, but I think that at the moment it's the crowd reaction which is the high point of the live thing, and not the group's performance, even if the sound wasn't helping them, i've seen much better hip hop/rap shows.

New Pusha T and Tyler is really great.

nice to see
tyler get nominated for two VMAs, not that i'd usually even notice but i remember it being a goal he was always quite vocal about and nice to see someone realising their dreams. extra kudos to MTV for putting him against bruno mars. actually quite keen to watch it this year now.

Had to bump this thread
because of the new Mellowhype song '67'. Definitely a big step forward in my opinion and packs much more of an emotional punch and genuine anger than anything they've bought forth before.

yeah mike uzi
maybe a hidden gem in the OF-fringe. think he's making full-lengths with frank ocean and domo genesis. very keen for both. think the key to longevity with OF will be mixing up the producers.

nahhh
they are only well known for doing stupid stuff and brutal lyrics... they are overrated and their is generally too much hype about them in my opinion.
-
Domo Genesis
Was really good, they're back on form after Goblin and Frank Ocean for me now.
navajo this'd this -
no worries!
11th November at XOYO. on gigsandtours.com or through frankocean.com

plus
Frank Ocean's increasing profile and Hodgy Beats doing a couple of Stones Throw collaborations. Definitely optimistic there's a lot of good stuff to come.

Seriously good
Always thought he was overhyped, guy has a good voice but other than Novocane no real songs, but this is a huge step in the right direction.

can't work out if i like these guys or not
nice beats, and their wordplay and flows are pretty cool, but some of the lyrics are plain wrong and dont really sit well with me
interesting article about them in the latest Wire
