'I myself will be breaking into the homes of all eight members of Los Campesinos while they are away on tour and urinating in their empty beds.'

cool?
-
ok let me explain
journalist takes the absolute piss out of the band in really harsh, personal tones.
journalist dies.
band pay tribute even though they have no reason to.now either agree with me or get the fuck out of the thread
-
eh..wha..gu...
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
-
I like Los Campesinos!
But I don't like anything that's twee. Listening to The Field gives me a migraine. Or is that something else?
Anyway, I'm not gonna revise my opinion of Los Campesinos! To me they're like a teenage, more angsty Arcade Fire.
-
The Field is definitely not twee.
Where did you get that idea from?
-
if you follow the laws of cool you are not cool.
that's the first rule of cool.
-
The field is not twee!!!!
and Los Campesinos certainly don't sound like a teenage, 'angsty' Arcade Fire...I think you need to listen to some more bands to get some better frames of reference.
-
I think saying how much you liked somebody just after they died
is paying tribute. Hasn't Michael Jackson's death not told you anything, even soundbites were treated as tributes.

I love the idea of Gareth kicking the shit out of Gary Bushell
I really do. Nice guys, that band.
-
Fair play to Gareth acknowledging the guy.
I remember that article he did on them, and I've just had another look at it and I still maintain my position that he was one of the saddest people in the world.
A bloke of his age writing something like this - "It’s only six months since the 14-legged abortion that is Los Campesinos! released their first abomination," is almost embarrassing.
-
oh right, turns out I commented on it at the time lol.
God bless Alan Richards.
-
I'm guessing aszx means The Field Mice . . .
. . . true twee originators & awesome band to boot
-
what? That's a good line
using abortion and abomination in the same sentence is a trick a lesser hack would shy away from. Besides, it's true.
-
Oh no!
I like to mis-label bands, or poorly describe their sound, or compare one band to another even when they aren't really that comparable according to those who spend every moment of their life devouring music.
-
I thought the first rule of cool was
leather jackets and sunglasses.
-
it's not true though, is it?
Calling a band a "14-legged abortion" (or indeed an "exercise in reverse-engineered paedophilia", whatever the fuck that means), simply because you don't like their music, is just silly. It's the 15 year old's approach to music criticism.
It reminds me of a brilliant quote from Kurt Vonnegut: "I have long felt that any reviewer who expresses rage and loathing for a novel is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armour and attacked a hot fudge sundae". It's true for literature, and it's doubly true for pop music.
-
It's what critics do tho, innit?
"I don't like it, therefore it's shit. And I'm gonna swear to make my point". Brilliant.
Just reverting to 6th-form personal insults does not make your opinion any more valid, it just loses any value your points may have had.
I'm sorry Swells is dead and I did genuinely like some of his stuff, tho I liked his Seething Wells persona better, but a lot of his music work was like a pissed-up Brit in Spain, shouting at the locals cos they don't understand English.
Los Camp aren't for everyone. Deal with it, in the same way that Battles, or Animal Collective, or Little Boots, aren't for everyone. Doesn't mean they're shit tho, does it?
-
This comes back
to the notion of 'taste-maker' critic. Writing great copy about dull bands like Los Camp was Swell's forte. Sure bland, backgroundable stuff like this band, Sigur Ros and Bloc Party have mainstream appeal and regular posters on this site might site them as gateway bands to 'the good stuff', but it takes a lone wolf like Swells to decry this for what is really is. Banal wank.

Definitely not.
But, Los Campesinos are utterly shit.

not really "pretty fucking cool" is it?
just a band heavily influenced by 90s indie saying, ya know, he was a good journalist. nice, but not really "paying tribute", just a bit of writing about how they liked him.
