Best band that's a member of DiS community?
As is pretty standard at DiS events, I wanna ensure the opening band at our summer party (RSVP for details: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=122426134831 ) is a brand new band from our community. Ideally one of the regulars, whose band also happens to be great (past examples of the active boarders 'n' DiS events include JoFo, Redjetson, Mystery Jets, Youthmovies, Snowfield (then became Editors) and Bloc Party - I shit you not!).
Internet Forever? Body in the Thames? Esben at the Witch? ...Suggestions? And feel free to Jag away...
If you haven't already, have a listen to some of the boarders bands here http://soundcloud.com/groups/drownedinsound and if you're in a band, submit your tracks.
Will try and make the decision by the end of the week.

either
Worried About Satan, Pagan Wanderer Lu or Sailplanes (intermittent poster award goes to Plus (lynshroom), who are quite very good). Am a bit partial to some awkward silences every so often as well
-
Facebook is banned
can you post the details here, or on last.fm?

one of them posts on here, and they are pretty good
-
Gotta be
Thee Awkward Silences
-
worriedaboutsatan
no doubt
-
Worried About Satan definitely
also Run Walk i quite like.
and obviously we (esben and the witch) would love to sir!
-
Sean, I am glad you asked. The answer is Daniel Copeman (DiSer: The_Living_Year) of Esben and the Witch
http://www.myspace.com/esbenandthewitch
from Brighton, EATW are a very unique trio with a great vocalist/lyricist (Rachel Davies). I have an article about them that I'd like to see go up. I was planning on giving it to Rob at DiS for the DiScover column but EATW deserve more than a blurb in a column- they are really awesome. Check out "Marching Song" first but all the tracks are top drawer and they are recording a new EP right now which should be out in september. They have a self-released ep out called "33".
: )
-
oh, and get Stagecoach
they are pretty good. User = www.drownedinsound.com/users/Loog_J

It's nice we've got some mentions. I really appreciate that. :)
I didn't click on here to Jag (honest!) but do check us out if you want to.

I'd recommend the Battle is Over as a decent starting point to form an opinion on us.

I put the first track
on the DiS soundcloud goup but its only had 2 listens, both by me to check it was working. Teaches me for being such a try hard.

Recorded our debut single yesterday 'Wonderful Beasts' will probably have it up on our page later this evening.
-
Ace Bushy Striptease
or Ben from Cats in Paris. Hi guys!
-
I always liked that Milkbreath guy
Stairs to Korea sounds like good pop and We Came Out Like Tigers are cool
-
The answer is clearly CARDIGAN ARMY
They are a brand new band comprised of:
me on my kasocillator and various budget effects pedals
St. Cronin on his shiny new Rhodes
Lemonbrickcombo on vocalsThe other two don't know anything about this yet, but trust me once they do and we've flown St.C over here to practise, we'll be tops.
-
I was going to say The Second Hand Marching Band as well
and 4 or 5 Magicians
-
WTF?
Internet Forever?!? Haven't they got abour three songs?
Surely, anyone who wasn't insane would say:
1) Los Campesinos
2) Dananananykroyd
3) Gossamer Albatross
4) Cats In Paris
5) Plinth -
Actually, no...
1) Johnny Foreigner
2) Los Campesinos
3) Dananananykroyd
4) Gossamer Albatross
5) Cats In Paris -
These threads are a red jumper to a bull
for me but this time my jag will be elsewhere.
I vote Pocus Whiteface. Top shit.
-
It's Fiction
are a hot new DiS band tearing up the scene right now. Despite not even having a myspace yet they already have a tribute band.
-
Ace Bushy Striptease/Internet Forever/The Second Hand Marching Band/4 Or 5 Magicians/Stairs To Korea, yeah
Or Minnaars. For all Dowling's chiding they're getting their live party heavily together.
-
thanks to those who said 4 or 5 Magicians!
we're hardly "brand new" but I suppose would be to most people. Our debut album isn't out yet - that's being released on October 12th, so I guess we qualify, and would of course be up for playing. Cheers!
-
Then you sir win the battle
Great album!
-
oh and the other one i was thinking about originally
was Friendship
but i'm gonna check out all of these and see how well they with with our headliners
thank you for all the suggestions -
haha!
why thank you! new stuff on the way pretty soon too.
:) -
Esben and The Witch & Friendship
are both well worth watching...
-
how could I forget
Friendship!
-
Whoever the winner is
you need to get Brian May involved.
-
Worriedaboutsatan
Esben and the Witch
Asleep Beneath Volcanoes

Jonquil?
They were fantastic in Oxford a couple of weekends ago. And I know Hugo's a disser.
-
Her Name Is Calla
Probably.
-
If any of the above are better
than the Winter Olympics (featuring Andrew Wolfpack) then I will BBQ my balls.
www.myspace.com/winterolympics
www.thewinterolympicsband.com -
Esben & the Witch are fantastic it seems
The lead vocalist sounds like Leila Moss, but the band are 100x better. Sorta like Portishead or something.
I could really get into this.
-
Jagging away.
Like the pixies, but jagging and not gouging
-
^
Ta Goo! We'd be keen, sure.
-
yeah i regularly post on here and i'm in a band and we have an ep out and everything
i don't think we'll win though cos we don't sound very DiS.
-
I might as well add mine
Death of the Party www.myspace.com/deathofthepartymusic

We have a Kaoss Pad (efx procsr K-Pad) u can use for the gig yo:

Here's one in my Cardigan Army uniform pondering battle plans:
http://i587.photobucket.com/albums/ss315/hovercrab/Photo1967.jpg
I also have a great idea for the title of our debut album:
http://i587.photobucket.com/albums/ss315/hovercrab/Photo1895.jpg
-
yeah, fantastic
Esben singer Rachel Davies (Hazy Bones) reminds me of Grace Slick for some reason and I have spent about an hour trying to find an example and really couldn't but still whenever I listen to Esben and the Witch's ep "33" I am reminded of the amazing Grace Slick. There is just something in the delivery I think. Davies' stately lyrics, eloquent diction and accent make for words that you really hang on. I don't go in much for lyrics but Rachel is one of the exceptions.
Here is Grace Slick singing one of my favorite Jefferson Airplane songs "Two Heads" off their 2nd album, "After Bathing At Baxters":

check out Esben and the Witch:

-
I love "TEK"
gotta be honest; your singing's gonna take some getting used to but -cool music! I love your drawings too. Tell me, why the "sickness" motif and references to being sick? It is interesting but I just thought I'd ask.
can you upload "TEK" for me?
-
what are the tribute band called?
I hope it's either:
It's Non-fiction
It's Fact -
this is good actually
I really like the vocals
-
I can see we are really starting to gather momentum here
I can't access any of those photobucket links at work, but I'll assume they are tops.
Is it time to start jagging do you think guys.
'HEY GUYS I RANDOMLY STUMBLED ACROSS THIS BAND CALLED CARDIGAN ARMY WHEN I ACCIDENTALLY FELL FROM A WINDOW INTO THEIR GIG AND THEY ROCK, WHAT DO YOU THINK?????'
-
no one believes you Jimmer
But it is true. We are AMAZING.
-
doctornovocalcords and bumlord's band is the best new one
but they never play anywhere and I can't remember their MySpace. So that's really useful to everyone.
-
Alt Track
http://www.myspace.com/alttrack
electronica/trip-hop

THANKS!
I was literally just about to JAG us so hard.
We'll get the party going yo.
-
I also really rate them
love the demo EP, now on the DiS Soundcloud
-
you had a bigger crowd than the headliners!
... let me know if you come to Mancs or Sheffield!
-
please have a listen to my
Why?, do make say think, pavement, lambchop inspired band:
-
i second that one
also might as well mention http://www.virb.com/quadrilles while i'm at it ;-)
you know what they say, nothing kicks off a summer party like some math popâ„¢
-
her name is calla are pretty fucking amazing live
and one of them posts on here (tom i think)
-
"when you fell from a window into their gig"?
You've lost me speedy.
but sure, anyone got song ideas? I'm too busy thinking, listening, DiScussing other people's music to make any of my own. Haven't even picked up my bass in 6 months. Fiddled around on an old analog synth a bit but nothing much. It would take me two months of dedicated practice just to get up two playing speed but in that process I'll bet I could flesh out some ideas.
I have been kicking around the idea of creating some cool podcasts that would be "pilot programming" for a fantasy radio station, complete with music, bizarre commentary, news and radio theatre.
-
realizing the vocals...
are being done by an asian looking woman has made them make much more sense to me. She's got that whole melt banana sqeaky-setto going on. I thought the dude was singing- which I found disconcerting. Plus did you notice they seem to have a tiny person drummer? That is awesome. So they've got an asian chick, a dwarf and artsy looking white boy- what else could they possibly need?
ha, the singer's got an Immortal video on her myspace (cool)
Immortal:
-
Stairs To Korea
Clicked enter by mistake. But yeah, Stairs To Korea are my favourites. Disney anthems.
-
you can damn well buy it ;)
that's on our ep. it costs 5 english pounds. we're trying to sort out a download service type thing where you get a really decent version too.
i'm really happy you like Tek though, i think that is the sort of sound we're going for with new stuff we're doing. Probably out of all the bands i've ever been in that's the proudest i've been of anything i've ever done because i don't think it sounds like anything else.
oh and i guess the sickness thing is probably to do with my childhood obsession with diseases. i used to watch documentaries all the time on all sorts of things and get nightmares. i hope our music is a little bit like that though really, you know, slightly off kilter...unwell. there are lots of other reasons why we are called Man-Flu but it'd be too boring to explain on here.
oh and Marie (singer) does all the artwork. she's great.
-
Esben & The Witch
Gossamer Albatross
Internet Forever
Stairs to Koreasounds like a line-up amenable to a fair slice of the DiS pie but then there's a major DiS contingent into the dance and electronic genres and sub-genres and another contingent into the scuzzed-up hardcore/grindcore/sleazemetalcore too so ... I dunno
I like these 4 bands though - and they seems somehow like the 'next generation' of DiS bands, if there could be such a thing
-
oooooh yes!
it's all sounding a bit warmer than arrivals, will be loads deeper- there'll probably be more guitar, a bit more GAS-y perhaps. and a choir. i'm not even kidding about the last one...
-
I really need to stop bugging you...!
But how soon is soon!?
-
Quadrilles
are great.
-
The 'fell from a window' bit
was my attempt at lampooning the jaggers and street-teamers who always claim to have stumbled accidentally upon the band they are shamelessly promoting.
-
heheh
ah won't be for a while yet, but the foundations are already there!
next up is the remix album which should be ready soon! -
excellent!
I'm gonna put up a track from our first ep tonight, although I've not played it to anyone yet so am super nervous how people will respond, but if anyone's opinion means shit - Sean's the man :)
-
i just uploaded
the full album version of 'you're in my thoughts' to the soundcloud page if anyone's interested!
xx -
Got the Esben And The Witch EP yesterday
and it is very good. However, I think worriedaboutsatan edge for me... can we have both? Or get 'em to team up for a supergroup called either worriedaboutthewitch or Esben And The Satan?
-
thanks!
How about the whole album? I have been trying to get it. I'll review it for you.
Send link for upload (in all confidence) to me, Pat Cronin:
-
hahaha
Esben and the Satan sounds like a plan!
-
will do!
but when i get home as i'm at work at the mo.
who do you review for btw?! -
That is a lovely thing to say
Mister brickcombo if you want the mp3's just let me know yes x
-
I was thinking this!
would be pretty noisey I reckon (no bad thing) and quite the experiment!
by the way you guys dont do remixes yourselves do you?
Also thanks to all who have mentioned us in this thread is incredibly nice of you and anyone who wants mp3's of the Esben and the Witch e,p pm me with your email address of choice.
Daniel
-
haha!
yeah- just get everyone on guitar making some horrible noise and we'll be fine :)
we do remixes! we recently did a codes in the clouds one, and we've been chopping up people for years! ever since i did one for sky larkin back in the day (which they never used- boo! actually, it was pretty cack) you up for some satan mangling?!
x -
would be keen for some satan mangling yes!
we have a couple of people doing some could be a real treat!
WAVES AND WAVES OF GUITAR NOISE AND BEATS WITH BANSHEE WAILS thats how worried about the witch/esben and the satan would sound in my head
-
i second that!
get the bluettes! and thanks for the kind words above, sir!
-
this community
I am working on an EATW review as well, I will put them up simultaneously. It will be favorable, I don't write about music I dislike. Occasionally I will crusade against overblown music but generally, I can't bare writing about mediocrity.
-
right
can't have that
so, CARDIGAN ARMY- do you have any varicose veins? I don't but we should have someone who does.
-
cool!
expect an email tonight!
-
awesome!
we'd be up for mangling some noise for you.
you can shoot some wavs over to us at worriedaboutsatan @ yahoo.co.uk via yousendit or something. or pm me for a mail address if that's easier!hahaha, esben and the satan would be horrible horrible noise with pounding techno beats, worriedaboutthewitch would be gentle folk with clicky glitch stuff... we could support ourselves! haha!
-
Let us know when you get your "store" opened (I am a staunch "supporter type" and only ask for promo when nothing else available) ( :
I do detect various strains of virus in the music, yes, definitely a sickness there waiting for a mutative leap to infection.
I think it's interesting that Marie has the Immortal video up on her personal myspace and you list yourselves as "Metal,Black Metal & Death metal". Is that a joke or are you closet metal rockers or are you bringing a new metal contamination to the world? Don't get me wrong I do sense the "metal" within you but it is not death or black metal- how about calling it something?
bug metal, suppuration metal, fever metal
Yeah, let me know, I want the ep. I have a broadband connection and streaming audio is a killer so I can't listen to TEK too much more this month.
Pat:

Love Ends Disaster

well
I would vote Calla, cause you know..they are AMAZING, and I really want them to become huge

Thank you :)
We're planning to record a second EP soon, we've not really seriously considered an album as of yet. I'm sure it'll happen eventually though!
