Im a fine city (something a friend wrote)
If you take a moment to look at what the 'scene' is in this place we call home; you can see something emerging, something fresh, exciting, young! Studies show (they don't but I'm making a point so it doesn't matter) that Norwich receives trends approximately 6-8 months after cities such as London, Birmingham or Manchester. Fashion and trends can blossom in these areas out of nowhere, the catalyst is the people, the population. So things change at such a quick pace, you just have to read a copy of the New Musical Express to see which trend they might be following that week! In the Fine City over here in the East things tend to bypass us, maybe because the rest of the country thinks we all "can't read, can't write, but can drive a tractor". Which in some cases is correct, in particular some of the people I see at approximately 2am wondering around the wonderful Prince Of Wales Area.
So This Fresh, Exciting and Young thing; what is it?
It is my belief that artists in Norwich have the ability to be true to themselves, to be ultimately creative in the shadows from the changing scenes and spotlights put upon those trend setters in the capitol. To write music, songs, real meaty stuff. Not just a collection of ticked boxes that adhere to a genre!
We're not a popular lot as far as the 'industry' goes, but things look like they're on the change with more than a few acts being watched by those wonderful fellows that can make dreams come true.
Norwich may or may not be put on the map soon, but for now I'm not convinced that it matters. Let them nurture their craft, perfect the songs, let the music take shape and take aim when it really counts.
Would I be correct in saying music is art?
If so. There is no need to rush.
