Mick Harvey leaves The Bad Seeds
Don't think I've ever had a press release at midnight before. Not one I've been awake for, anyway (while finishing a review of the surprisingly brilliant Little Joy).
Anyway...
For a variety of personal and professional reasons I have chosen to discontinue my ongoing involvement with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. After 25 years I feel I am leaving the band as it experiences one of its many peaks; in very healthy condition, and with fantastic prospects for the future. I'm confident Nick will continue to be a creative force and that this is the right time to pass on my artistic and managerial role to what has become a tremendous group of people who can support him in his endeavours both musically and organizationally. It was a fantastic experience to finish my touring days in the band with the recent shows in Australia and the unique events that took place in conjunction with All Tomorrow's Parties, especially Mt. Buller, which was one of the many highlights of my involvement with the band throughout the years. I shall continue working on the Bad Seeds back catalogue re-issues project over the coming year and look forward to the new opportunities I shall be able to accommodate as a result of my changed circumstances.

Wow, I never expected this to happen.
A while ago I was wondering if Mick felt like he was being in a more diminished role or something, since his writing credits seem to be getting less frequent and with people like Warren Ellis taking on more of that Nick's right-hand-man role. But I never ever expected him to leave - through Roland and Blixa and a bunch of other Bad Seeds, I thought Mick was The One.
Although this is kind of perfect, because they'll be needing a replacement guitarist and I could totally step up to that.

me neither
Having never seen the Bad Seeds live until recently and then seeing them twice in less than a week at Mt Buller and in Brisbane I did think about his role in the band. Although he was very much in the background be came across as very much the 'band leader' for the rest of the BS with Nick Cave and Warren Ellis being the obvious focus point for the audience. NC only really seemed to engage with WE on stage. Mick Harvey did drum with Rowland S Howard at Mt Buller so hopefully he'll be repeating his drumming duties when RSH finally gets around to following up his excellent 'Teenage Snuff Film' album.

wow
Never have seen Nick Cave. I saw Blixa once with E.N.- frickin awesome. So are you Aussie? What ever happened ot Roland Howard? These Immortal Souls was one of my favorite bands from the eighties. Crime And The City Solution too. Mick Harvey- cool dude!
Cool that he's referred to ATP in his statement.

Mick's departure
Without Mick, The Seeds would have been scattered to the wind many years ago. We owe Mick a lot. Buller ATP was incredible- one f the best weekends of my life I would say. I am grateful now having followed The Seeds from the Melbourne Palace, to Mt Buller and then to Adelaide and watched these shows directly under the glow of Mick's guitar and Korg. I can't play guitar (or anything), but I will happily join the band now if asked.

im glad i went to the Brisbane gig
kinda thought this was on the cards for awhile now really, seeing as Warren has really taken over the role of Nick's foil/muse
