mine: Jeff Buckley Is A Bit Shit
CONTOVERSY! i'm so fucking unique.
but I can't be bothered to go into it.
Actually there are so many supposidly great bands that do very little for me.
although i don't know if that's controversial because i doubt anyone cares. they're lovely though, so simple and unpretentious.
Mozart just wrote notes at random on the stave?
The manic street preachers are the worst band of all time.
They are, however, correct.
Is better than Willie Nelson.
Said to a man at a Willie Nelson gig, at which Ryan Adams had supported, as I was trying to leave before the end.
I don't care much for them most of the time.
I'm not very controversial...
as in, it's the album he has added the most to by being involved in it rather than someone else doing it.
The Jesus and Mary Chain, I think they're boring.
Also I reckon The Tings Tings are actually good *hides*.
this is the controversy thread not the truth one!
so I guess in this case I don't mind that you posted it in the wrong place! Unless you were deliberately trying to outdo me? If so, you won.
is massively over-rated.
To certain people on here, the fact I can't stand Bright Eyes or Jeff Buckley is terrible. Or agreeing with A-i-C's Radiohead views.
To most people, the fact that I think Chumbawamba are the best band that ever lived causes at least mirth, if not shock.
To a certain group of friends, the fact I think that 'Intro' is better than 'Music Sounds Better With You' is shocking beyond belief.
In short, I've no idea.
Awful band, always banging on about how much sex they have, then doing extended solos
is a wicked track I like it better too, those drums are pretty huge.
it took me a while to BELIEVE aswell. There was a time when I thought it was ALL turd.
The Ting Tings that is.
I can't think of any others that haven't been mentioned yet.
Oh, Goldfrapp's 'Felt Mountain' is one of the best records ever made.
is the best album of the last ten years.
By definition, if they are my opinions then I cannot consider any of them controversial.
Emotional - harder to find
but a lot of music is turd, not just metal.
I fuckin hate Jeff Buckley too.
having posted that john?
I agree with you
and has been for years. A handful of decent songs (yes that's all he has) doesn't make for a legend. BTW - how does he get away with charging premiums for singing like a clapped out old whino from cardboard city after downing a bottle of meths? Rant over!
Fleetwood Mac are good.
an awesome band pre-Sing the Sorrow, which is one of the shitest things ever.
I'll add that I find the Beatles by turns twee, dull, overly sentimental and just plain shite. The Who are one of the most overrated bands ever, as are Joy Division. I really hate Mods, although that's not entirely musical.
A Silver Mount Zion gigs, despite the occasional moment of amazingness are fucking boring, and the vocals are fucking dreadful! British Sea Power are a mediocre live band!
sounds interesting anyway
Muse are the biggest pile of pretentious wank to grace the music world in the past ten years. With the possible exception of The Mars Volta.
I agree with your views on Jeff Buckley.
Pet Shop Boys are better than Joy Division (though I'm not alone on this forum in thinking that).
The first Velvet Underground album isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Pink Floyd were ace.
The Levellers had some great songs.
Nevermind is better than In Utero, but Unplugged is better than both.
is a genius
they're anything but pretentious.
Jesus. Just wait till you hear daphne and celeste.
..and New order aren't really that good.
Sweet Emotion, Dream On and F.I.N.E save them from the abyss in my opinion.
Bob Dylan= whiney croaky old shit bag.
are two of the most overrated records in history and Radiohead & Nirvana are two of the most overrated bands on the planet.
Hence that wasn't controversial.
That IS contraversial
Im from Manchester!
This is true.
Bob Marley (and 99% of reggae) bores me shitless, The Stone Roses were a terrible overated band, Primal Scream are a terrible overated band and Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds is a masterwork that everyone should own.
theyre from leeds
Me= Rebel without a cause.
Familiar is not the same as good.
Led Zeppelin are incredibly overrated.
not that theres anything wrong with that, it just reminds me of lesbians sooo much.
just repetition that are brains can understand, and are brains feel good when we understand/anticipate things
are fucking sweet. And I dont mean that in an ironic "so shit their good" kind of way. I really like them.
The chain are fairly dull, I still don't get it!
should have sucked cock for a living. Oh, they did!
were musically OUTSTANDING(Fred Durst aside, which admittedly makes this post far less controversial)
i'm a big Shut Your Eyes fan, and Art of Drowning rules
i don't think I ever saw that guitarist play more than one string at once. maybe this isnt proof but...
that is FACT my man.
gun dont kill people. RAPPERS DO!
is one of the finest guitarists of our generation
Elliott Smith would be on my list of top five singer-songwriters of all time but Dylan'd be nowhere near it.
I'd take Dog Man Star over anything Radiohead have ever released.
isn't bad at all, and in places is fucking great
Tubular Bells is a load of cack.
I don't know the general consensus of this prog-rock blige on DiS, but I know in the wider music community I would get a load of stick.
The 2 have had a time share on gay mens dancefloor activity
Radiohead's latest album bores me in a big way....
But they're the exeption rather than the rule.....oasis, new order, stone roses blah blah blah blah.
I think society would be a better place if Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty both fucked off and died.
Efrim thinks his vocals are great in ASMZ...
I meant to say Radiohead only got good/ half decent from Kid A onwards
is Craine's single launch. Steve Craine bursts on stage like U2's very own Bono, with the exact charisma that has got them this far. With incorporating orders such as "let us beat Coldplay", it is hard not
to pick up some sort of promotion to help support the band. Their new Drummer has given them the commitment
they yearned, and now Craine will never
again let Stardom out of their reach again. "End of the line" is played without fault, but doesn't have the same
electrifyingly addictive effect as all time favourites "The One" and "Emotions", which echo some Red Hot Chilli Pepper influence on the strings side of things. With massive bridges that include epic parts on synthesizers
and keyboards, their mainstream sound is a crucial part of what makes them so great and intense.
are the worst on that list (excluding some earlier stuff)
they werent always that way though.
never forget is amazing!
they did have some crackers
'15 years 'anyone?
and I consider none of their albums to be classic in any way shape or form.
They do have some decent songs though.
I can't stand it, it bores me senseless, even thou all my friends say I'm an idiot cuz 'this one time they totally got high and connected with marley'
like Motzart didn't say that three million years ago
Paramore, Panic At The Disco & Fall Out Boy.
Mogwai need some fucking new ideas.
Neither time I saw them they were they anything special.
it just wasn't the album that people were expecting
most pink floyd (but not all) is boring
smiths are shit
beatles are overrated
metallica were never that good anyway
all modern indie is worthless
the UK should be banned from making guitar based music now (if you want to make an omelet you have to break a few eggs)
the clash are shit
Aerosmith were really good, up to an including Get a Grip.
I'd have given anything to see them tour Pump. I was just a little too young.
To the time machine!
Although people do seem to get pissed off when I say that Alien Lanes is shit. But it is shit.
is a pussyclaat
third is really not very good. sounds like a group of 40+ musicians desperately trying to be edgy and getting it all wrong. gibbons' vocal melodies are the epitome of bland
but Hole -> Nirvana
are boring self-indulgent artwank.
than "Nevermind", any day of the week.
Oasis, Stereophonics, Razorlight and Travis all made great debut albums.
I feel quite amicable toward Bono
I don't get how anyone who likes the first two Portishead albums cannot possibly like Third (that might not include you). It's the album that converted me - their first two albums are largely boring, I find. Third is gripping throughout. For a record so long in production, it sounds so vital.
Anyway, Radiohead's The Bends is, aside from 5 tracks, shit. (nice dream, street spirit, iron lung, fake plastic trees, high and dry)
Lily Allen has created some of the most perfect pop songs ever. (Knock 'Em Out, LDN, Everything's Just Wonderful, Alfie)
Joy Division's Closer, aside from the last 3 tracks, isn't that good, and Unknown Pleasures is probably better. Though those last 3 tracks on Closer are pretty amazing..
Interpol are dullsome.
Muse's track Citizen Erazed is pretty tiring and boring. It certainly doesn't warrant being known as some towering track above all their other stuff. Stockholm Syndrome perhaps..
bearing in mind the two main singers are a hetero couple...
reading through this thread that would seem to be a contraversial opinion on here...
But this is also mine.
Even better than 1977.
Bring on the hate!
is just silly.
should be abandoned in favour of the old purer pythagorean system, key changes be damned
So true. Kid A and onwards >>>> OK Computer and before.
...and why does Guy Garvey go to gigs then quite often ignore the band for most of the set? I saw him do it at Spiritualized at the Lowry.
I cannot stand GnR. I hate Axl Rose and Slash is immensely overrated. But fuck if I have to hear Welcome to the Jungle once more with that annoying twats horrid voice.
he once came up to my friend (girl) and was like "alright. I'm Guy Garvey from Elbow."
Needless to say, she knew, and she sent him on his travels.
Beautiful Future by Primal Scream is a great record, as is Puzzle by Biffy Clyro, Midnight Organ Fight by Frightened Rabbit, Mogwai Hawk is Howling Glasvegas all fucking brilliant.
Dig Out Your Soul by Oasis is the album of the year and everyone knows it and will be seen as classic when Brittish music has gone to shit
What do I win?
loads better than Favourite worst nightmare and should have won the Mercury Music Prize
Mostly all of the popular British music from the '90s is an embarrassment. Some of the unpopular stuff is too.
I can't differentiate between reggae, ska, dub-step or similar branches of music because it's all just unlistenable shit to me.
Jeff Mangum wrote some bloody brilliant songs, but his nasal-y whine makes sure he destroys them as soon as they come screeching out his mouth.
Despite him being one of my favourite songwriters ever, it takes great effort for me to sit through a few of Nick Cave's more plaintive piano balladry. I prefer him when he's being speedy, witty, yet still poignant.
Sometimes I'd rather listen to my favourite bands/songwriters, etc., talk about an album they've written than actually listen to the album itself.
plodding two chord ultra-generic sub-Oasis pub rock sonic abominations aimed at an audience of white van drivers, Top Man storecard holders, students at former polytechnics and cunts.
Shit. There's that guy in Ocean Colour Scene, isn't there?
Block Party and Lightspeed Champion.
ear rape that I was referring to.
The Fall suck and did nothing good for music.
British punk was important, but generally rubbish.
American music is almost always better than UK music.
Excellent work, Jordan.
The 90s was in general terrible for British music (with the notable exception of trip hop and a certain mob of glaswegians I love), NMH have the worst vocals and production ever committed to record.
Well, I think The Fall are alright, but I really prefer Mark E Smith's persona over the music.
other than that, sure.
Brits have all the great ideas, but it takes other countries' bands to polish them to a shine. Eg Punk-> Hardcore
despite Sting being a bit of a massive cock.
Roxanne > Can't Stand Losing You > So Lonely > Message in a Bottle was a pretty good wee string of singles.
where you've gone wrong here is that nice dream is the worst song ever recorded. and fake plastic trees isn't far behind.
it's like a little window into 2004
NMH vocals are utterly utterlu perfect for songs he's singing.
except maybe the last bit.
but The Police were a good pop band. In fact, make their songs heavier sounding and they could be Nirvana songs or something.
Trip-hop? Oh dear.
my way of saying 'on average'
I mean, again, after the duel and stuff?
i probably would agree with you if i bothered working out where bands i like come from.
japanese >>>>> all anyways.
except I do think the Beatles were good ,just not that good.
are genuinely and completely 100% awesome.
Rancid were brilliant songsmiths
They make pop music, not "emo" or anything else.
that Mangum's vocals being so high in the mix was actually quite deliberate, and an attempt to dissuade the 'casual' listener?
I love Rancid.
Trip-hop was truly awful too, Phil, sorry.
Come off it.
despite the terrible genre name
and I hate Pink Floyd
Like dubstep after it, trip-hop had an infinitely better name than a sound.
they have tricked an entire nation. Open your eyes and get your ears syringed, they are just a whiney nasaly northern rock bands who play very bland indie rock. If I ever see them I will re-enact Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci's famous foot stamping scenes from Goodfellas on their ugly zitty encrusted faces.
if this thread fell in a forest, would it make a sound?
Yes they are terrible.
if he could sing "properly" the words wouldn't have any power - he sounds like he's possessed and singing in tongues.
i can understand not liking his voice, but without it the album wouldn't work half as well.
Pitchfork is correct more often than not
Much as it pains me to say, the Australian music scene is a lot better than the UK one
I really like the first Embrace album
The best Britpop-era band were Mansun
All About Eve should have been huge and not just known for their ToTP appearence.
I think Bono is alright and usually will stick up for him when he gets a slagging on website forums
Thom Yorke's solo album is better than any of Radiohead's albums since OK Computer
The Clash are the most overrated band ever
Jeff Buckley is a bit shit and it makes me sad that more people don't know who Elliot Smith is.
Out of all the grunge bands I saw live, Nirvana were far and away the worst and Pearl Jam at The Riverside in Newcastle were the best
The last truly great British band was The Smiths
and the best album of 2007
Id like to state that the Thom Yorke album is fucking brilliant.
Every Modest Mouse album is too long.
Not too controversial, don't know if i'd agree though.
but last time I listened to their first album i remember it being really good.
the clash never wrote one good song
nine times out of ten. this is coming from an american. fuck the ramones. fuck nirvana. fuck 80's american hardcore. long live late 70's early 80's british punk/postpunk/newwave. electronic music is better than acoustic/guitar based music, almost always. pink floyd rules, new radiohead is better than old radiohead, joy division is the best band of all time, etc.....
Only a bit? Which bit is the non-shit bit?
Punk in general
and most days I will sing at least one line from 'You're in the Army Now' by Status Quo.
i wish i hadnt started it, i dont know what i was thinking.
I think i'm done now.
Thermals are fun live, but god their records get tedious.
get tae fuck. Brilliant band, y'idiot.
fugazi are totally shit.
I will, however, back you up on Maxinquaye and Mezzanine being two of the greatest, darkest albums about.
aren't very good anymore?
Jeff Buckley would have been one of the most influential/important musicians of his generation.
But I remember it getting hated on here (not the review of course) and many of my friends were disappointed by it.
And Idiot Pilots debut has some of the best production i've heard.
OOOOOO aren't i controversial....
was when I agreed with somebody on here, without any irony and without trying to be all "I'm so cool cos I can like pop and guitars", that Girls Aloud are simply Amazingly Brilliant.
is boring as fuck.
i almost made my mate cry because he couldnt understand i would rather see them live than metallica.
i probably should? but i can't.
..which can be testified with two words;
chemikal and underground
Animal Collective make 'experimental' music that is actually very, very good.
Is actually not as boring and terrible as most say it is. Who said it was anything more than an homage to music that came before? I mean does everything have to be completely original to be good? It's all just good fun methinks.
will never be bettered.
Joy Division & Gang of Four are a bit dull, their albums lacks dynamics. Oasis is the musical equivalent of Friends: It's just so lazy. Razorlight are better than Arctic Monkeys.
Is the best AC-Album. But SJ is second.
having listened to Broken Social Scene's self-titled tonight I can concur that I fucking hate Broken Social Scene.
they are simply spell binding
it's all over now.
Meet Me In St. Louis, cats and cats and cats, and This Town Need Guns.
But other than that, I'd say you've hit the nail on the head.
but apparently they aint math rock?
aren't 65dos math rock? if so they rape the competition
Ie: I liked weekend in the city
Lcd soundsystem are pretty dull actually
Ok computer is very good but they have surpassed with ease.
but I wouldnt know what to take off any of them.
statements on this thread is actually making me despair
Not even in Kurt's according to one interview with him I've read.
Anyone who as considered themselves vaguely 'indie' in the last seven years or so should take five minutes out of each day to praise the absolute wonder that is Is This It.
Scary Monster's is Bowie's best, despite it's success being responsible for his decline.
Radiohead really are that good. Anyone who thinks otherwise is being contrary for the sake of being contrary.
what does your first sentence mean and why is it controversial?
that was meant to say 'anyone who has considered...' More sense?
And why is it controversial? Because some people downplay The Strokes, mainly because of the fairly poor third album. If it wasn't for Is This It the decade's music would have been much different. Along with Kid A, it's probably the most important album of the noughties. (Oh, and obvious over exaggeration in the 'five minutes praise...')
Shania Twain has a few decent songs, albums even (and she is well hot for her age).
The Red Hot Chili Peppers are... well, have intermittently throughout their career, been the best mainstream live band of recent generations.
And Bob Dylan is so appallingly bland, unoriginal, turgid, conceited and generally crap... that people who adore him and credit him with the many accolades he constantly receives have invalid opinions. Working class hero?
sorry, that last one was a bit venomous.
As are McFly.
were not very good.
bloc party, but you forgot the drummer from the libertines / dirty pretty things... both bands that have failed to ever surpass the dirge you describe.
cover of 'Under the Bridge' is great and probably better then the original.
im sad to say that it isnt nearly as bad as everyone makes out...
also. Perry Farrell has the best rock and roll name ever.
always seem to provoke a terrible reaction. Am I the last one standing in thionking 'Six' will one day be revered?
And McFly will become bored of their poop/pop ways and start making inluential experimental studio albums.
You totally hit the nail on the head there, i'm going to steal this and use it as my own to look cool and controversial ;-)
the production is fine, more free and stuff.
It's not just me.
Plus 'Conspiracy of Seeds' = best thing ever.
by Meatloaf is AWESOME.
But somehow it seems that you should think they were good before Be Here Now, when their songs were just as underwritten and overlong (ok maybe not exactly that overlong, but still) back then. Think it might have been an answer to an earlier answer.
Which leads me to...Radiohead really ought to call it a day now.
Oh, and Will Sheff is the best songwriter on the planet.
Paul Macartney's good points do NOT balance out his elements of pure EVIL.
Oh and controversial thought in general, why is it that everyone is digging out their lame baby falling over video clips, adding FAIL on the end, and suddenly people think it's hilarious? will that large bird from emmerdale be back presenting "You've Been Failed" at some point?
when I say that...
- Tool are posh nu-metal and are total shite.
- Animals is the best Pink Floyd album
- Playing With Fire is better than The Perfect Prescription
.....is in my 10 ten songs ever........Frickin ace.....
I'll probably repeat lots of stuff above.
Stone Roses - Jeez wot a lot of fuss over a couple of clever drum patterns and a lack of tunes.
Dusty Springfield is the greatest female vocalist Britain has produced.
About 75% of the Beatles output is pretty ordinary.
Nirvana were good. But not THAT good.
Dylan - As above.....but with that fuckin awful voice like "sand and glue"
The Black Keys version of "Have Love Will Travel" beats the Sonics hands down.
Simian Mobile Disco should beg the other two to come back and reform the old band.
