Nearly
I blame the LHC.
-
I didn't think you liked dubstep?
If you're just getting into it a good starting point is 'Evangelist' a compilation put together by Mary Anne Hobbs. There's some sublime tracks tracks on there.
-
I can't make a list
All I have is a Burial album, a 2562 album and some Jimitheexploder mixes. but they're all excellent
-
I do like it a bit
a lot of it is really boring and all the hype around it so far has generated a fair few unpleasant characters and fetishists, but there's good stuff there.
-
Why am I talking?
I'm not josh :(
-
YOU DON'T KNOW ME!
Anything Planet Mu related is my specialist subject.
-
i wasn't aware planet mu were cutting in on the dubstep stuff
i mostly know about them through venetian snares-y type things.
-
Like this
list a lot. You're having a good day, what with finding a vocalist and all.
-
Yeah, they're putting out some amazing dubstep albums
Try 'Underwater Dancehall' by Pinch and any released by Pinch. Any dubstep released on Planet Mu generally gets my approval. In fact, most Mu releases get my approval.
-
*any released by Ital Tek
It's getting late...
-
*RELEASES
FUUUUUUCK!!!

So

Underwater Dnacehall is on Tectonic (its his label, innit).

-
I remember seeing Vex'd at TDK festival
This was before dubstep had blown up, and after witnessing his set I wanted find as many artists as I could with that similar feel.
-
Also
Have you heard Ben Frost? I think you might like him...
-
I don't know Ben Frost
I will look into him cheers.
Vex'd is pretty cool Jammie from Vex'd has an amazing remix that quite a few people are playing at the moment. Its huge!

-
This is great news
Love Starkey
-
SKREAM
'RUTTEN' HAS GOT TO A TOP 5 SURELY!
-
Well.
All those tracks are amazing so who cares?
Ikonika and Darkstar are both dubstep, albeit weird and interesting dubstep. I'd just call Joker a Grime producer and leave it at that. Fuck all this Wonky nonsense.
-
can someone please explain
what exactly dubstep is? It's been bugging me for ages.
-
oooh, nice one

http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=129311
hehe doh out of stock already :S
its only been out a few weeks...
I'm sure more will happen
-
Err
Rusko - Love Is Real
E.J. - U.F.O.
Sukh Knight - Born Invincible
Burial - Archangel (Boy 8-Bit Mix)
crotcH - CirclemBut there are so many others I could throw in here.
-
I wouldn't call myself an expert but here are mine anyway:
TRG - Broken Heart (Martyn's DCM Remix)
KOAN Sound - Mafia
iTAL tEK - Bloodline
Jazzsteppa - America B
2562 - Kameleonthose are in no particular order btw
-
An updated top 5 for the last few weeks:
Brackles - Get A Job
FaltyDL - Winter Sole
Joy Orbison - Hyph Mngo
Tempa T vs Untold - Nextaconda (dunno if this will ever get released)
and I've just got Silkie's album so when I listen to that I'm sure a multitude of greatness will rush at me -
I dont think Nextaconda will come out
it was a cheeky special made for the Ruffiage Sessions lot to play, the label that put out Next Hype had to almost beg Untold to give them a copy even though it was kinda half their tune so I dont think it will come out in a hurry.
I dont think I could choose only 5 it was hard enough last time and I buy something every week now.
-
Probably
Pinch- Qawwali
Burial- Etched Headplate
Kromestar- Kalawanji
Loefah- Mud VIP
Skream- LightningGotta show my love for Bug- 'Skeng' and Distance- 'Empire' too
-
Jimi would you count Hyph Mngo as dubstep?
I'm halfway on this one, it's confusing me. The lines are more blurred than ever.
-
I dont know anymore...
its one of those tracks that has kind of come out of the scene of dubstep but kind of isnt dubstep, there is loads of it around at the moment. People are just making what they want and it gets lumped under dubstep as its the dubstep labels pushing it and DJs playing it. I think dubstep is more of a scene than a genre alot of the time now I mean you get the blatant dubstep then a hell of alot more going on too all under the loose banner.
-
you can improve any track tenfold by putting the next hype a cappella over it
not that anaconda needs improving. seen that knocking about on tracklisting, can imagine next hype goes well with that constantly rising melody. big tension!
-
it's so so so good
in fact fuck it, new thread
-
actually got my 12" sides mixed up!
i was thinking of i can't stop that feeling. still, would be dope. any easily (not in the middle of a mix) accessible audio?
Andyc8 this'd this -
Massively out of the loop, but I like these
Kode 9 - Magnetic City
Geiom - Canopy Desire
Martyn - Vancouver
Deadbeat - Berghain Drum Track
Geiom - Hydropine -
Emalkay - When I Look At You
^ when is this tune actually coming out, by the way? Jimi? It's fucking amazing.
Skream - Kut Off
The Bug - Skeng (Kode9 RMX)
Kode9 & The Spaceape - Portal
DFRNT - Surface -
Emalkay - When I Look At You
I think its penciled in for a release in August on Dub Police.
-
Argh, stupid DiS ate my post...
Current list as of this week, needs to be done:
Hyetal - Pixel Rainbow Sequence (Peverelist Remix)
Joy Orbison - Hyph Mngo (still MASSIVE)
Scuba - Speak
Shortstuff - Stuff
Rustie - Bad ScienceBut it's too hard with just five so runners up list is pretty necessary...
Floating Points - J&W Beat, Brackles - LHC, Headhunter & F - Dedale, Zomby - Polka Dot, Untold - Stop What Yr Doing, Shackleton - Death Is Not Final. -
I know!
Can't bloody wait, all I meant was I've caned it on any mix I've had it on for the last couple of months. It's just a ridiculous tune, and it seems to have soundtracked my summer despite not even being released yet...
-
Looking for new Dubstep
Hey iv been paying attention to Dubstep for a few months and have noticed that 90% of it is shit, but thats just based on my specific taste. However, im a huge fan of clean-cut tracks eg Emalkay - Frequency, Gut Feeling, Mecha, L-wiz - Mary Jane, obviously Benga is amazing and Kromestar has some nice tracks (eg Hungry Dub).
So if there are any Dubstep fiends on here that could recommend some other tracks/artists id really appreciate it ey.
Peace -
interestingly
this is the most read thread of the year (so far!)
-
Even this year?
Strange, it was started in September 2008. Quite amusing statistic though.
-
indeed
thank you google, etc
-
Awesome
I might add my top 5 for this week then.
Ramadanman - Tempest
DMZ - Neverland
Blawan - Iddy
Scuba - You Got Me
Guido - Cat In The Window -
Oh shit, need to add a bonus
James Blake - CMYK
Setting my world on fire that one, probably my favourite song at the moment.
-
its a bit old skool now
good to see indie googlers playin catch up though ;)
My top five this week! half of it will prob be grime or osmething else but vaugly fits in with dubstep.
Swindle - Air Miles
Blawan - Iddy
Ramadanman - Glut
Rossi B & Luca - E10 Riddim
Africa Hitech - BlenChanges daily/weekly...
-
Oh ffs.
1. James Blake - CMYK
2. Girl Unit - Temple Keys
3. LV & Quarta 330 - Suzaran
4. Deadboy - U Cheated
5. Flying Lotus - Do The Astral Plane -
^5
Why? never gets old, such an organic sounding song.
-
Love that Suzaran remix by LV & Q330
I've been rinsing LV's earlier stuff on Hyperdub lately - the CCTV/Dream Cargo 12" in particular is fantastic, though 'Globetrotting' and 'Turn Away' are both beautiful as well.
Their upcoming 38 EP on Keysound is also brilliant, a concept EP about the mental states of the passengers on the 38 bus (a route I'm very familiar with, which is quite cool).
-
For me:
Numbernin6 - Hunt you down
Numbernin6 - Garbage
Numbernin6 Remix: The Prodigy Breathe
Kode9 - Nine Samurai
The Streets: In the middle (nero remix) -
Ok so I'm trying to find out what this dubstep song is
I've heard it out and about a few times (including on the main stage at Field Day yesterday by some DJ) but I've got no idea what it is.
It's got a real wobbly bassline and the main synth riff is really catchy and has two main notes that I believe are the same pitch but two octaves apart going from high to low.
I can whistle it and it's doing my head in that I don't know what song is! Help!
-
that doesn't narrow it down to much really
but if I have to have a wild stab in teh dark it could be...
Tron by Joker
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHS7Xbc3ET4Record ya self whistling it and I might get it ahhaha
-
post in the field day aftermath thread
someone might have heard it too and be able to shine a light.
-
argh
I thought you'd nailed it when I started listening to that song - it sounds quite similar! The one I've heard has a much wider frequency range in the main riff though it's equally as catchy. It must be a pretty massive standard dubstep choon seeing as I've heard it accidently at the very few dubstep nights I've been at!!
-
Lots of Joker sounds like that
Thats prob his biggest you hear everyone playing. Unless it was a dub by him called My Trance Girl, which isn't far off tron but with a more epic melody: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIfxkD2FgqI
Was it wobblyer like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtMlB-BEMso
-
sounds a lot like that Rusko song too :-)
its not at all like 'My Trance' but it's a lot like 'Tron' and 'Woo Boost' it's got such a massive drop in it it must be a classic!?
-
Filth by Skream?!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKxsxmLSjdo
This has got me really wracking my brains.
-
Or this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mwL6R-Z1e4
When I Look At You by Emalkay. Still have a soft spot for this one, and Filth to be fair.
-
Occelation Man - GHHAAGGHHHH
Good thread. Open my eyes to a lot of tunes.
My dubstep tastes tend to be very specific-- dark and dirty and plenty of occelating sub bass re: my choices. tube them..
Dan le Sac Vs Scroobious Pip - I feel sick tonight (doctor p remix)
Nero - Innocence
George Lenton - Jungle
Emalkay - When i look at you
Vent + Reso - Rumble
Daladubz - Warsaw ButcherMelt ya face off. UGHHHHHHHH :)))
Cat
-
THATS IT!!!!!!!!!
I'd never heard the vocal before! Thanks Badman!!!
P.S Is your name from an old Misterhall/ Siegfried Sassoon song!?
-
Haha yeah, think they were still Misterhall when I signed up, shows how long I've been kicking around I guess
Also, that Emalkay tune is one of the first I 'discovered' after my first few forays into 'dubstep nights', nice to see it still being picked up on. Some people think it's commercial rubbish but if you compare it to shit like the aforementioned Rusko track it stands up very very well haha.

He deserves the recognision its not about whos mainstream its just abouts whos good, so that kinda rules out the black eyed peas being one of the top 5 dubstep producers ever...
-
The elitism that's overcome anybody that listened to dubstep
for more than a couple of weeks has to be one of the most annoying things ever. Anybody else find this? Maybe I just went to the wrong show that was seemingly full of cunts
-
went to the wrong show
its just cos its got some attention so a lot of dances have a strange vibe right now, not every dubstep night is the same some are very sketchy its a wide church out there and some of teh clubs are your usual any old electro dooch bag night and others are pure good times. Its an easy mistake to make thinking its all gonna be this new cool thing but some digging is still involved. Its the same with ever club and every genre really good and bad places all over. Where did you go what city and that?
-
nope
turns out you're not trolling, its just at one point on these boards people would make jokes at the expense of artists like that cos well... people find the music so bad its funny. And now it turns out people who acctualy really like it come here to talk about it. It was just a suprise thats all haha. Fair doos if you enjoy it and all that. This is a good site for recomendations: http://www.brostepforum.com/
-
Agreed with jimi and brightonb
It's the most open and friendly dance music scene I've ever been in any way involved in, certainly in Bristol and throughout the FWD/DMZ axis in London (along with a lot of the smaller nights in the Big Smoke).
Certainly an increase in the sort of audiences it attracts tends not to help, just in the sense that there are people going along for different reasons/who weren't necessarily a part of it when it was smaller and more community driven. But I've always found it to be amazingly open-minded and welcoming - one of the reasons I've always enjoyed it so much. Again, what night was it you went to/where?
-
I think a major problem people find when encountering 'dubstep nights'
is that they go to just a 'dubstep night', often with no recognisable names, maybe at a student union or somewhere, or to be fair even big nights like Wax:On which for the most part represent the more mainstream, student orientated side of 'dubstep', and therefore they're only exposed to (generally) the wobble heavy side of things that pissed up lads want to jump around to. This isn't really anyone's fault and may in itself sound pretty elitist, but I think what you've said about people becoming that way after a couple of weeks happens with most genres - there's always a way in to a genre and then when you discover how vast and (more) interesting underneath the surface of the few acts that creep in to the mainstream there can be a tendency to look back on your first exposure as a bit 'obvious'. Again, this is probably a really elitist mindset but I'm not really that fussed about being elitist if it means I get to find the best music out there.
-
I think my point is (because my OP is bugging me)
that the 'sneering, stand around judging people' elitism that is notorious in the indie and hardcore scene is completely alien to the 'dubstep community'. The only type of cunts you'll come across are those that have no regard for anyone else having a good time and are simply there to get fucked up, but the type of nights they attend are easily avoidable and the music certainly comes second to them just 'having a night out'.
-
this is his finest work
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DD0ce9vmyfE&p=845D56D21265D1FB&playnext=1&index=3
had to listen to this about a zillion times at uni this year - that drum sound is literally the worst thing I have ever heard in all my life
-
i'm trying not to take any personal digs here
but on the one hand dub-heads slag off 'indie kids' for not being adventurous and listening to other stuff, and then on the other hand take the piss out of people for the crime of googling dubstep tunes and ending up in here saying they like stuff like Rusko.
...and then claim that there's no elitism or snobbery in the dubstep scene.
again, not intended as a dig at anyone, cos in general the dubheads on here are sound
-
oddly, i don't think there's been that much serious dubstep chat on here of late...
Kidkut - Lilt (Apple Pips)
Cosmin TRG - Tower Block (Hemlock)
Hyetal - Phoenix (Orca)
VVV - Slacktide (Tube 10)
Jam City - Ecstacty (Night Slugs)Housey bonus: Lone - Pineapple Crush (Magic Wire)
alto I guess Jam City's pretty housey too...not been that on it of late, more listening to other stuff and been pretty poor; not really going out that much so i don't know about that many dubplates and things...
-
*Ecstasy Refix obv.
thought i'd written that...
-
Just from this year
Joker-Tron
Hyetal-Phoenix
James Blake-Footnotes
Disclosure-London Town
Ikonika-Fish -
I do know what you mean - and I think a lot of the problem stems from the fact that what's generally considered to be 'dubstep' - thanks to the Youtubing of dodgy remixes etc - is only one tiny facet of the sound
The majority of what I'd call 'dubstep' is probably almost entirely alien to the mainstream perception of what dubstep is. And what the op was saying was that people get elitist after more than a couple of weeks, as badmanreturns was saying it's because at that point you tend to dig deeper and see what else is around.
But a lot of it is misconstrued as elitism, which is a discussion we've had here. It's more a fear of misrepresentation, because it's so easy to get slagged off by people for liking 'dubstep' when they think what you like is Caspa, Rusko et al. Plus P4k's regular tendency to mention things like 'the token dubstep album to bolster your indie collection!' or 'it's so dubstep it hurts', or tending to claim that as soon as something gets popular enough to reach general consciousness that must mean it's somehow more than 'just' dance music. Which is frustrating to someone who's quite happy to accept that dance music doesn't need indie validation to be good.
If you see what I mean?
A la - Ramadanman's 'Humber'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFd63W_bTx4
That in no way goes anywhere near what most people would think of as dubstep, but it takes the genre's original spirit in brilliant new directions. -
Yeah I've noticed that
I've been listening to a lot more techno recently. But I've spent this whole week putting together this coming week on DiS - a week dedicated to it - so there should be an awful lot more on here come tomorrow. Whether people are happy about that or not ;)
Oh, and Lilt, Phoenix and the Ecstasy refix are MAD good.
-
completely agree about Pitchfork
they'd be better leaving the coverage to outside sources like Blackdown or get in a specialist writer. the way the main site covers it is pretty cringeworthy.
-
You get the odd good one
There's a guy called Mike Powell, I think, who's rather good. But other than that... Dance reviews from a rockist perspective tend to miss out things people more immersed in that music might pick up. Not in an elitist way, it's just stating the obvious. It's the same if I was to review an indie pop CD, I'd find it a lot harder to make some kinda objective judgement.
Blackdown's coverage on P4k is goooood though, yeah.
-
pitchwork is the greatest cancer on this earth
moreso than warfare
-
Not at all
It's a fantastic site, and a great resource for music - just not particularly for dance music. That's not a big deal, it's just annoying when they try to expand their coverage in a way that misrepresents an artist who works outside their typical remit.
manbearpig and kineticdis this'd this -
Nah, Phoenix is definitely a dubstep tune
The other two are more what-u-call-it kinda stuff, admittedly.
-
Those Formant ones are lovely
'The Last Time We Spoke' is wonderful. I think Hyetal's probably one of my favourite producers actually, in an understated kinda way.
-
No crime at all, it's all about what you like innit
The rant above was more directed towards the idea that dubstep's full of elitists, and an attempt to explain my thoughts on why that's not the case.
Again, I'm not a massive fan of Rusko but I can respect what he's done - perhaps more in the past than now, but he's made a great career out of doing exactly what he wants to do, which is amazing in music anyway, let alone a genre that you'd generally consider to be niche. Plus his MIA productions were pretty cool, and I've got a soft spot for that Amber Coffman track (that may be because I love Dirty Projectors though, admittedly). Oh, and Cockney Thug is still massive.
Most people I know into dubstep etc don't tend to sneer at people for liking that kinda stuff, they just don't listen to it themselves. I've got no problem with people liking it, and some of it's pretty cool. At the same time it can be frustrating that the general conception of what the genre 'is' is limited to jump-up stuff, because if you tell someone who doesn't know much of it that you like 'dubstep' they tend to presume you mean wib-wob stuff.
-
yeh, I was bending the rules a bit I think Tower Blocks at 130bpm too...
i did put in a discaimer about the Jam City at the bottom but I do think that and the Girl Unit are at the more dubsteppy end of Night Slugs repetoire - it's wouldn't say it was simple house/funky
-
do you know when it's coming out....
the post on Hijack says mid-July but since we're now in mid-august....
-
Err... Soon, I think. Haha.
It's an amazing 12" though, can't wait to actually get it on vinyl. My favourite thing that's come out this year by a country mile.
-
nah it's pure 100% cancer
cheers
-
nice selection
my fave 140-ish 'dubstep' tracks this ummmmm few months are...
Everything by Joe on Hessel Audio and Apple Pips, Blawan on Hessel, Mala's album on DMZ, the forthcoming V.I.V.E.K. EP on Deep Medi, LHF EP on Keysound and the Orson 12" on Vensan. I can only do weekly or monthly if I do the who year or all time I'd have to write a list of about 250...
-
there's something quite hauntological about it, i guess
the sound of the present in all it's heaving modernist cityscapes subtly mixed with nostaglic memories of 90s daytime tv...and it's just so good to dance to. simon reynolds must love it.
-
This...
..is all you need mate. http://www.dontpaniconline.com/magazine/music/dub-boy-dancehall-nice-again

It's a..
... mad mix by Dub Boy. check it out
-
not really dubstep is it?
On the other hand it looks quite good, so.

My brother's been smashing that out recently
As tearout tunes go I've got a soft spot for it, as it's so utterly ridiculous.
-
are you telling me you acctual have a brostep brother?
thats quality hahah
-
Not especially, he's majorly into Berghain and Surgeon style techno
With occasional excursions into a lot of good dubstep and the odd bit of the bro stuff, haha
-
the one that goes
BBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR-BR-BR-BR-BR-BR-BR WOB-WOB-WOB-WIBBLE-DUM-SHIBBY-DIB
-
haha
I was hoping you had an alterego that was just into brostep :(

Oh shit, I forgot about that one

Re:Those Formant ones are lovely
Art music primarily refers to Classical music or others listed at List of art music traditions Contemporary classical music Art music may also include certain forms of Jazz even though jazz is primarily a form of popular music. Religious music, folk, and world beat music.

Re:what track
The relationship between classical music and popular music is a controversial question. Some partisans of classical musicmay claim that classical music constitutes art and popular music only light entertainment. However, many popular works show a high level of artistry and musical innovation and many classical works are unabashedly crowd-pleasing.

I think dubstep is the genre that will make me go all misty eyed and wistful later in life. It was the only scene I felt Ive ever really belonged to and I felt it somehow encaptured the vibe of being alive at that time.It may well just had a lot to do with being the right age at the time and doing the right drugs to go with it...
(haven't read the last 1/4 of this thread, sorry if ive just repeated someone elses choices)
