Is it music getting more mainstream?
Inspired by the Mercuries. Me = quick off the mark. But it's also partly inspired by the current state of Xfm. The number of specialist shows have decreased dramatically, with what was Jon Hillcock's show between 1am and 6am every weekday morning being turned from a show in which he had almost completely free reign to one which is 100% playlisted (and now without DJ).
It could be said that these things are just exploiting the rise in popularity of "borderline" alternative artists, such as Arctic Monkeys, The View, etc, but it seems, to me at least, that nobody is looking to fill the gap in the market that they have left behind. Is this indicative of the way the music industry is heading? Is it soon going to be impossible for bands doing something genuinely interesting to get any exposure, or even get signed, at all?
