Beth Ditto
The NME have posted a story about Beth Ditto wanting to design her own clothing line for Topshop - she's said she won't play instores there until they give her her own clothing line (http://www.nme.com/news/the-gossip/26992 - read her quotes at the bottom)
Several points:
1. Kate Moss has been famous for over a decade, Beth Ditto has been famous for five minutes.
2. Whilst it's all very well that Beth Ditto has "triumphed in the face of adversity", what with being a lesbian and a voluptuous woman'n'all, she continually cites herself as a role model for young women/people, which I'm sure she is for some people. HOWEVER, why exactly is it good for young people to look up to a woman who's clinically obese?
Fair enough with the whole "inner beauty", "accepting yourself" thing, but if you look at it on a really basic level, she's saying it's fine to be her size... This might all sound pretty fascist/fattist, but it really annoys me how on one hand, you've got the media chastising parents for letting their kids get so fat, yet on the other hand, this woman is so widely celebrated for writing one mediocre song, and being fat whilst she did so...
Is it wrong to think this?
