Did anyone go to White Heat?
I've seen much better bands live this year.
white heat was complete and utter carnage, as you'd expect.
will the wow/shock factor wear off though?
It's so true I bought tattoos saying it for all my friends' Christmas presents.
on stage, threw some stuff around, maybe some cardboard, played some 'songs', maybe broke a lightbulb or something and then went home *yawns self to death*
are the fabulous penetrators, by a factor of 1.9 billion.
guilty. but i challenge your classification of anything different as gimmickry!
how can they NOT be the best live band of the year?
I thought I told you about it but obviously not.
It was immense.
cor, blimey. a band should have guitar, guitar, bass and drums, and maybe some keyboard for the epic set closer. anything more is a bit 'fruity', yer get me?
I might come and get a report.
No w8 the lights are all off.
and am a bit drunk.
they're fun, but all you get that you don't on record is the gimmicks. the music is pretty much an aside and not the main focus of the performance. if you were blind/right at the back you'd be a bit nonplussed.
I question the categorisation of their performance as gimmicky. Gimmicks are cynically employed by their nature, and used specifically to grab your attention. Gay Against You is much more generous and well-meaning than that. live music performance does not only have to be about creating sound. i totally disagree about the blind/at the back thing as well. the energy they create in a room with their performances is electric.
and none of the others will have featured a band member getting a fireman's lift from a DiSer. result!
i saw them play at an all-nighter at Electrowerkz around Easter, no one knew who they were, and they were on really early: it was ultimately a nice 15 minute chuckle, but it came off as a bit throwaway. it was hardly a "HOLY SHIT" level event, more of a "that was fun, i might see them again" type thing.
i couldn't remember the music 20 minutes later, just the PE shorts and the shouting in my face and the running and touching all the walls.
I remember missing that gig sadly... but I saw them in tiny venues twice and they blew the roof off the place both times.
Musicially, I don't think they are as interesting as Germlin's more complex solo stuff. But I remembered
after the first time I heard it.
i question it. not that i've seen GAY this year, but radiohead can't be beaten. they're just too damn good.
most of my favourite shows this year involved a load of improvisation: i don't remember many "songs" because there weren't many, but i do remember exactly how the gig went because of the power of the music itself.
i almost always like it best when it's the sound that interacts with the audience rather than the band themselves.
but if i did,(from youtube and stuff) it probably would be for me
Fare well, traveller.
but the more I hear about their live PERFORMANCES the more I think "Dull"
And they've been utterly excellent and totally different at each show. The songs are well produced, have loads of lovely melodic hooks & the lyrics are funny and ace. It's always interesting to see how people react to their shows, I think it's alot more than a gimmick, rather an interesting and extremly fun attempt at subverting the usual ideas of live music and performer/audience divisions.
you prove my point
the more I think 'dull'
you make them sound like the band equivalent of a Michael Barrymore show
that was me.
not really sure what my opinion of them is.
They're either the best band ever or complete bollocks. I think I'll need to see them again to make my mind up.
There have been other bands I've enjoyed more, but them bringing down the Old Blue Last was one of my favourite things this year.
It's easy to pick holes in what they do, but any band that makes me grin from ear to ear and want to dance smash things are brilliant as far as I'm concerned.
Not as good as I'd seen them before. Maybe the wow factor does indeed wear off. It has to. The music is shit and the guy is just a bit scary up close. It's in his eyes. He really REALLY wants you to enjoy yourself.
that in this instance you quite literally don't know what you're talking about.
brilliant fun, great catchy danceable songs and make me want to grin until i burst. I've seen better bands this year, but GAY were the most LOLsome and the best party :)
but Yo La Tengo win this year
the music works well on it own in a different way, ive seen them and wished the sound was better... the old blue last show the sound was the worst but it was possibly the most chaotic and enjoyable.
that just looks like absolute cockrot
