Street Regal formed one drunken night after maroon-haired frontman Guy invited break-dancing lead guitarist Treva back to his place for some very special, and not entirely legal, cheese on toast. Keyboardist Waller was, according to the band, recruited because he was the only keyboard player they knew (though to be honest, he was the only bloke they knew with a keyboard). Drummer Paul was rescued from Cardiff where he was teaching art, a job he wasn’t especially good at given the fact he doesn’t like children. Completing the line up is northern bass player Ben, who describes himself, modestly, as “the best shag this side of the Pennines”.
Street Regal have been described by Drowned in Sound as "A ten legged, testosterone fuelled, turbo charged machine, smoking and playing itself into rock oblivion!" and Radio 1 claimed Street Regal "Rock like a rhinoceros invading a glass factory". More impressively, a certain Bob Geldof was moved enough to declare the boys as "The best f*****g live band I’ve seen since the Sex Pistols."
Aside from Waller's somewhat worrying love of Jeff Wayne’s ‘War of the Worlds’, Street Regal’s musical influences include The Rolling Stones, Metallica, The Stone Roses and Nirvana. Guy claims Nirvana "Saved the world from poodle perm rock. They saved everyone." Although one suspects The Darkness might have something to say about that.
Apart from dodgy cheese on toast and Nirvana, Street Regal are driven by "A desire to do better." Guy also says that he "Doesn’t want to stay in the same town scrounging a living for the rest of my life. Let’s be honest, I could sit here saying "I’m in this band for love of the music, which all of us are, but some money would be nice!"
Guy shouldn’t have to wait long. Street Regal have attracted much music industry interest, and increasing radio airplay and recently co-headlined the earthshOck tour. There’s a buzz not only in and around their home base of Cambridge, but also across the UK, thanks to a string of energetic live shows at venues from The Marquee to The Cavern, including two blinding gigs at this year’s ‘In The City’. Indeed, one such show over the summer, saw Street Regal being described by The Fly as possessing, 'Tunes that make one want to smoke fags, drink beer and snort cocaine’!
