Small Enclosed Area formed late in 1999 in the small town of Elgin. By the summer of that year they had acquired quite a range of songs and were asked to play their first gig in Forres along with Purple Munkie and Deadloss Superstar. After the gig they received some constructive criticism as well as some positive feedback, which was surprising as they thought the gig "went a bit shit". They went and refined their sound over the next half a year phasing out more of the lighter edged songs for a heavier sound.
In December 2000 they played their first Aberdeen gig at a Fudge Frenzy. They had great fun and not only that people seemed to like them which gave them a huge confidence boost. That set the ball rolling and in 2001 they started to play a lot more gigs, Inverness, Elgin, Lossiemouth but mainly in the Aberdeen area.
The highlight of 2001 was being asked to play at a Fudge Night at the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen. This gig went well and they enjoyed the experience of playing at such a good venue. In the audience that night was manager of Andover based label Hackpen Records - Stephen Crabtree. Despite only hearing only their last song he was impressed and asked to be sent a demo. After a few negotiations and after he saw them play in full he offered them a contract.
To promote a split-single release from Hackpen and their debut EP, the band went on a mini-tour of the UK at the end of September 2002; including Edinburgh, Glasgow and the London Underworld.
In November of 2002, Michael - the bassist - unfortunatly left the band due to a need to concentrate on his studies at university just as their debut EP was being released, leaving the four remaining members unwilling to give up on something so hard worked on. They employed another bassist, Ross Paterson... A friend and fan of the band, who also plays for local band Film #28.
The latest activities of the band has seen them play at the T-break showcase at King Tuts - selected out of 450 entries for a chance to play at T in the Park (which they managed to get) and have seen them play at the GoNorth Festival in Aberdeen on the 21st May 2003.
They have also recently released their debut EP 'Quintana'
