The Weekly DiScussion: readership tipsters, get tipping for 2008

With the regular spew of end-of-year best-albums lists subsiding, attentions across the industry are now turning to who will be hot – and who will be not – in 2008. Tips, the tastemakers call ‘em, these lists of unknowns mingling with the certainly going tos. We’re not oblivious either, and will be delivering the DiS opinion on next year’s potential Best In Show next week. But in the meantime…

We’re after your tips for next year, since we’re forever reading about new bands on the site’s music board, following links posted by you guys. Don’t worry about thinking if your tips are commercially viable propositions (pretty much a prerequisite when considering these things within the industry) – we’re more interested in the bands you’d ideally like to see improve their profile in the coming twelve. If they’re on the bottom rung, maybe they can step up a couple; middle-ladder acts, perhaps they’ll be gracing the third stage at Reading and Leeds come the summer?

Who’ll be next year’s Foals, the band that’s elevated from next-to-nothing mainstream obscurity to sound-tracking the first sexual fumbles of a thousand teenagers? Who’ll step up to the plate stateside, like Gallows have in 2007, and take their British rock to the Warped Tour masses? Where’s the next Adele coming from, the next soulful solo star to win a Brit before they’ve even delivered a debut album? The next Jamie T? The next Klaxons? Et cetera… we could relate one to another endlessly, but perhaps your favourites for next year are of an entirely singular style? Could Munch Munch step into the shadow of Deerhoof, cast for so long from overseas without anyone to fill it domestically? Could Beestung Lips make good on their fiery potential and produce an Orchestra Of Wolves-bettering album?

G’wan then: post your ear-t’-ground tips for 2008 below, with links and the like, and us office tap-tappers will click through and listen. It’s not like we’ve all that many albums to listen to right now – the industry’s pretty much already entered its temporary period of hibernation ‘til the first few weeks of January. We look forward to your ear-opening suggestions!

DiScuss...

DiS’s Tips for 2008 will be running on Monday, December 17. Be sure to check it out.

Johnny Foeigner

Broken Records

Agreed

On both counts, as it happens. BR could be huge. I think. Maybe.

broken records...

are very good and nice lads as well. I agree that they coudl make waves in 2008.

Got the EP the other day

gooooooooooood shit

Slow Parade

is a great tune. I liked Russian Song too, its not on the EP though, they need to release that.

russian song

was on the t-break compilation.. so in a way it has been released.
it's on their myspace page, seems to have been renamed though!

Looking forward to having a CD...

...saves me going onto MySpace all the time.

Cut Off Your Hands

for sure.

Also - Bombay Bicycle Club and Lo-Fi Culture Scene.

The Metros

...will probably be huge.

Probably

another set of disappointingly run-of-the-mill-indie bands

plus!
Tired Irie
Youthmovies

and NO AGE will be on freshly squeezed plugging their platinum selling debut album

we can all live in hope

actually

youthmovies wouldn't tap into the mainstream... they're good, though

tired irie have enough disco beat to do so

tips for 2008

THE ACORN (from canada) have a record out there called glory hope mountain that is fantastic- all banjos and that but with the controlled chaos of port o'brien and the smoothness of midlake but better live....

THE PACK AD-The female Black Keys is the quickest reference- two women with a massive amount of talent- great live too....

the VAMPIRE WEEKEND record is going to be huge..

THE YOUNG REPUBLIC could win a lot of support- starting to crop up here and there....sort of a more orchestral shins, but with a motowny makeover-rough trade had it in early and sold a bunch- official out in jan...

TUMBLEDOWN ESTATE/ LONELY GHOSTS- TOm from Help SHe Can't swim is Lonely Ghosts- think Help she can't swim meets casiotone from the painfully alone. Jim Morrison provides support and has his own solo project 'tumbledown estate' which is sort of shambolic surf pop...-they opften play live together- best lyric (tumbledown estate)' I hate every bone in your body but mine'....quality.

JOSH T PEARSON- if the recordings hes been doing with JIm from grinderman and ed harcourt ever see the light of day.....

out there

in this case being canada

One More Grain

Yes, I said One More Grain

No Machine

Woo.

hmm

Exit Calm
Miou Miou

Hmmm...

Looking forward to the Tokyo Police Club LP in 2008. That should evevate their status somewhat.

Would like to see some recognition for:
My Sad Captains(myspace.com/mysadcaptains) & Fanfarlo (myspace.com/fanfarlo)

Young Republic (myspace.com/theyoungrepublic)

Envelopes (myspace.com/envelopes)

Figurines (myspace.com/figurinesdk)

Irene

This Will Destroy You (myspace.com/thiswilldestroyyou) Have you seen the 12" artwork for their forthcoming LP? ZOMG!

Fuck me

That TWDY album has some of the worst artwork I've ever seen. And they're selling shirts with that design too.

I know!

I've bought it purely for that reason! And because I got the CD with it for £2

i think

Kid Harpoon should be
Cajun Dance Party will be
Laura Marling will be

My Tips:

White Denim - Just won Artrocker's favourite record of 2007, if that actually means anything to you. Really cool garagey dancey stuff. They do look a bit wrong in the face though.

MGMT - Brooklyn pop-electronica with a touch of the J&MC about it, I like!

Maths Class - First single just came out and is really good, go get it!

And many, many more.

-Reid.

i thought cajun dance party would of made it by now..

i was also expecting kooks levels of hysteria over them.

Johnny Foreigner should push on, and I hope Youthmovies also gain a little more attention.

White Denim are great

DiScover piece coming very soon.

I think Tired Irie and :( could get a lot bigger

but everyone here is already well aware of them

Fanfarlo

Grammatics
Foals
Gossamer Albatross
Sky Larkin
Los Campesinos!

that should do it.

Agree with Yelps

They played our night a couple of days ago...awesomeness, the lead singer is good weird.

Vampire Weekend.

Also, when Pete and the Pirates release their album, they will be massivo I think.

Pete and The Pirates

need to not be shit live, for that to happen.

.

Poney Express

...

I'm surprised no-one's said Glasvegas. They deserve to be huge next year.

mmm...my tips...

Vessels
Pete & the pirates
Youth movies
Godwits

Haha, that's my hometown you're DiSsing Mike!

Seemingly out of nowhere as well. Have I missed some kind of running joke here or have you recently visited and decided you really didn't like it? Which would be understandable I guess.

bands

a really exciting band about to tour europe in feb from Baltimore are http://www.myspace.com/thedeathset . themuthafuckingdeathset !

also santogold

hmmm

Fanfarlo
MGMT
Sam Sparro
Let's Wrestle
Sleeping States

A Place To Bury Strangers

Also, very very good.

pte and the pirates

are great

good call

be nice if they did well next year.

.

I think Frank Turner's new album could push him into the mainstream next year, he's got a horde of fans already plus his new single is a barber shop quartet with the already established Halloways. I also think that the big 'female singer song writer' will be Florence and the Machine. Foals will be big(ger) and I can see lets wrestle push though too. Also look out for Kid Acne and indie band, the displacments.

mm

A Classic Education
MGMT
Fanfarlo
Pete & The Pirates

Well

After hearing the new School Of Language (David Brewis from Field Music)single on the radio a bit this week, i'd have to say they're a pretty safe tip for 2008. Looking forward to the No Age full length too...

THE....

....SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP

www.myspace.com/thespecialrelationship

John Kennedy and huw stephens love them.

Check out the song 'Tearing Your Heart Out'....an Anthem in the waiting.

also 'The Cages'

James Severy At The Circus Circus

Yet to release any material, but Huw Stephens described him/them as "a real talent" following last night's session at Maida Vale.

http://www.myspace.com/jamessevery

I have two categories...

Bands that I think should have great years:

http://www.myspace.com/grammatics
http://www.myspace.com/thehair
http://www.myspace.com/duelstheband

The new duels stuff is pretty ace, quite a lot darker than anything before.

I'm very leeds-centric unfortunately (this is where I live), but I think these bands could have "break through" years if you like...as in go more into mainstream:

http://www.myspace.com/skylarkinskylarkin
http://www.myspace.com/theghostfrequency
http://www.myspace.com/middlemanpop

The

Great Eskimo Hoax?

Disco Drive?

my namesake

Yeah, Johnny Foreigner, new record will be huge.

Dananana.... if they get their shit together. They could be a force this year.

Those Dancing Days, twee pop, but real pop crossover potential.

Friendly Fires, if they decide to sign to a good label, look out.

durrr, Black Kids?

Wave Machines
Team Water Polo
Lionheart Brothers
Post War Years

The Sleeping Years
The Battle of Land and Sea

Sky Larkin

Black Kids
Jonny Foreigner
Tired Irie
Friendly Fires
Grammatics
Glasvegas.

I am hugely excited about the youthmovies album.
Maybe BSP will do a bit of a comeback cos their 3rd record is awesome. and hopefully futureheads will blow up in a big way cos their new tunes are banging.

Liverpool Bands:

These are all great, hopefully a couple will do very well this year:

Hmm...

Twisted Wheel, Manchester
More Assured, London
Those Dancing Days, Europe

Obvious ones include

Grammatics
MGMT
Black Kids
Noah & The Whale
Bombay Bicycle Club
Pete & The Pirates
Glasvegas

But I'd look out for:

Lo-Fi Culture Scene
Dead Kids
Team Waterpolo

How about a DIScover piece

for ONE MORE GRAIN, since they're playing a DiS night in February. Or have they already had one? They have an amazing album out January.

Johnny Foreigner

Cats In Paris

I think

that these will have good years...

I Was A Cub Scout (hardly a shocking or revealing choice but the album is out in a month or so and having just looked at the track listing it should be single-tastic)

Somebody mentioned The Ghost Frequency. I got a single of theirs to review in the summer and have been expecting them to get pretty big ever since, not that I'm all that impressed.

I also agree with those who have tipped Fanfarlo.

I also think, or hope, that Mr Luke Lieghfield will do well for himself.

British Sea Power probably won't get much bigger then they are now, but I can see this new album of theirs doing well for them. Second stage at Reading/Leeds well.

The Small Screen Light Show too.

Codes In The Clouds.

Cazals too.

Oooo and

nothing but "big things" from The Kissaway Trail.

It's Great When It's '08...Yeah!

Broken Records are, I think, just on the cusp of breaking out and becoming the big quality press-adored band, and their EP already sounds close to the finished article. Sky Larkin are still operating just under the radar but I can see big steps ahead on their part. What else? Noah & The Whale might just pick up a bit of daytime airplay the way things are going, Slow Club need watching, hopefully Eugene McGuinness will have some new stuff out, Johnny Foreigner, Fanfarlo, just about anything from the Drift Collective...

none of these artists will get big

though they all deserve to
Emily Jane White, Laura Gibson, Jesca Hoop, Silje Nes, Tiny Vipers, Peter and the Wolf, Rachel Harrington, Wooden Shjips, Britta Persson, Kaki King, The Young Republic.

Twisted Wheel

They will be huge

Lords, Bilge Pump, Soeza

Lords, Bilge Pump and Soeza will all have albums out on Gringo in the first half o'2008.

Also new releases from The Horse Loom and Zunzunegui, hopefully!

Charlottefield album on Fat Cat should be a good'un.

Dark Captain Light Captain

It has to be Dark Captain Light Captain. I hear they have an album coming out next year. I am wetting myself in anticipation.

www.myspace.com/darkcaptain

Kong

If there is any justice in the world.
KONG!

fuck yes

kong are amazing. myspace.com/kongdom

Canon Blue = WOW!!

If any more of this guy's output matches the Halcyon Ep he's hopefully going to recieve a higher level of acclaim, and well deserved it would be too.

Downloaded this yesterday and it has already taken over my head, its like the best parts of what Efterklang are doing crossed with the more direct, driving sensibility of Junior Boys.

This is really clever as well as being musical ecstasy. Believe.

Blah Blah Blah

oh...and Blah Blah Blah. and perhaps The Magic

I also like Alphabeat but that probably doesn't sit very well on here

h

mgmt
thomas tantrum
panic attract

Lykke Li

Tokyo Police Club
Johnny Foreigner
Cajun Dance Party
Dananankroyd
Girl Talk? or will he always be stuck in the underground for legal reasons?
Friendly Fires

A lot of people suggesting Johnny Foreigner which is good

'Slow Club' also already mentioned will hopefully get a bit more recognition for their lovely jangle folky strums.
'My Psychoanalyst' are probably the group that I'm most excited about and would love to hear an album by.

It'd be nice if 'Services' had a bit more success in the new year so that I can actually buy their album over here. They've just toured with 'the faint' in America and a lot better than 99% of the new-indie-dance breed.

Carrie Tree and Sharon Van Etten are two female solo singers with amazing voices who deserve a bit of exposure.

The Debuts are doing lovely things in the Leeds area in the vein of 'the organ' and have lots of potential. I hope 'The Rollercoaster Project' receives enough attention to move further up bills so he doesn't have to keep showing up all those that he supports.

It would be really good to see 'these monsters', 'instruments', 'wintermute' and 'action beat' step up to a similar level as 'youthmovies', 'tired irie','foals' and 'that fucking tank', with those later bands continuing their good progress!

In terms of bands who are on their second album 'My Latest Novel' are going to have a hell of a job trying to live up to their debut but it's going to be great to see what they come up with.

this may be considered as cheating...
