The Dash: Demo

These are the best two demo tracks I have ever heard. It’s very rare that such attitude and energy is so well captured so early on in band’s lifespan. ‘Alone No More’ and ‘Broomhouse Road’ excite from start to finish – both tracks flecked with exquisitely splattered filth, grime and style. On the evidence of these songs, there is nothing defensive about The Dash. The Gordon Raphael-produced ‘Alone No More’ starts as it means to go on: vocals beginning to shuffle forward, the guitars and organ lifting the song through some slow-groove Led Zep stomps, and back out into a lascivious, exploding refrain.
Having been given an earful of non-stop, chewed-up-and-spat-out rock’n’roll, we come to the real highlight. ‘Broomhouse Road’ is exhilarating. From its choppy syncopated intro, Marc Hayward’s deepened tones fit the tune’s dynamic melody and lyrics perfectly – the piano complimenting the chorus’s rise and fall with simplicity and precision. The one-finger fretboard movements The Strokes use beyond saturation, are used here to enhance rather than define – this is a very welcome change. If it hasn’t done already this tune is going to get the girls (and the boys) dancing. Watch your backs Razorlight. Space.Watch.This – arrange accordingly.

The Dash - Demo
really, when youre using gordon raphael (£1000 a day from some reports, even if you do get on with him and he likes your music) it aint really a demo...-
Re: The Dash - Demo
agreed. would the attitude and energy have been "so well captured" for 100 quid in a rushed 3 hour session in some ropey east end back street studio found in the back of the nme. or on a second hand four-track in the singer's mum's lounge. maybe well captured, but that's probably not their fault. admittedly i'd not heard them or of them until now, so shall hold more scorn back for the time being.

The Dash - Demo
disagree
the guys did record the demo in about four hours in a dingy little studio in the guts of old st...
couple of weeks later gordon came to a gig, liked it, and offered to produce one of the tracks for free.....
there's some of his emails to the band on their website www.thedash.info-

The Dash - Demo
Yep, it was indeed done in Old Street, but did take a little over 4 hours, and Gordon did it as a favour cos he rates the band big time. If anyone wants to check out what merited such a brilliantly accurate review, THE DASH and future labelmates TIGERMOTH, play The Barfly on Saturday 7th August. If it is anything like previous Barfly shows they've played, it will be a night to remember. Third Barfly gig on a Saturday in less than as many months - work it out for yourselves!-
Re: The Dash - Demo
Any idea wot time they're on at the Barfly?
