Young Marble Giants

The trio Young Marble Giants formed in November, 1978 in Cardiff, Wales. The line-up was Stuart Moxham on guitar and organ, his brother Phillip Moxham on bass, and Alison Statton on vocals. After gaining a following in their homeland, the band signed a contract with Rough Trade UK in 1979 and released the album "Colossal Youth." A single "Final Day" and an instrumental EP "Test Card" followed. The band recorded a Peel session in August, 1980 that was later released on Strange Fruit. The trio disbanded in 1981.

Stuart Moxham formed The Gist in 1981 and released three singles and an album "Embrace the Herd" on Rough Trade. He has released several solo albums as well as produced music for other bands. Alison Statton became the vocalist for Weekend who released an album "La Variete" (also on Rough Trade) as well as three singles and a live album. Statton has collaborated with Ian Devine and Spike on other releases.

Young Marble Giants' music has been described as "haunting," "enchanting," "dark and strange". It is unusual in that it relies on precise, sparse textures to create tension. Few rock bands have expressed a sense of disquiet with such elegance. Long live Young Marble Giants!
