Biography:
Ellen Brody was formed in early 2000. Bassist Jonny & guitarist Alex had met a few years before whilst playing in different bands. They both had an idea of forming a new type of sound involving all types of genres, something that in their minds the local music scene in Peterborough was lacking.
Due to other band commitments though, it was not until early the next year though that the band began to take shape. The recruitment of singer Tom, lead guitarist Chris Varnham, drummer Chris Clay-Dove and sampler Bache were made through mutual friends. Most had already played in other bands, but with only Jonny and Alex knowing each other for a significant amount of time, the band was born into an air of freshness. It was definitely a case of new friends, new sound.
The influences and experience that each member brought to the band made the first practice sessions an outstanding success. With each member listening to anything from punk to hip-hop and metal to Drum 'N' bass, the rehearsals showed that this was something new.
With a set now nearing completion, the first gig Ellen Brody played was organised at very short notice - actually, it was about 1.30 in the afternoon of the gig! A band had dropped out at a local venue and the promoter had phoned Alex to ask if his other band could play. Due to 2 members at university, he declined the offer but said his new band Ellen Brody could play. The promoter agreed and it was a race against time to find the members and friends to inform them of the gig later that evening!
It was an amazing success. So much so that they were offered to play again the next week, and a local music showcase evening followed a month later. Ellen Brody have since played with such bands as Occupational Hazard (voted 3rd best unsigned band 2001), Tripswitch (voted 8th best unsigned band 2002), Miocene, The Kennedy Soundtrack, Number One Son, Germany's Caliban and Defenestration.
With the success of these gigs, the band turned towards recording a demo. The result was an 8 track CD named ‘SuperFruityLowLiner’ that has received impressive sales at recent shows.
Ellen Brody are one of the most talked about bands on the Peterborough scene, and although they haven’t been together for long, they are using their musical ability and live energy to turn heads and appeal to their audience. And it's now time to make that audience bigger…
