Andrea Marquee

Bio

Andrea Marquee belongs to the new school of Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) that has a harder edge and incorporates new technology with Brazilian music. For instance, the Mangue Beat explosion in Recife, a musical development started by Nação Zumbi (her stable mates at YBrasil Records) allowed Brazilian musicians of all kinds and generations to see that outside influences could enhance locally-produced formulas.

Andrea began her career as an actress in 1992 at the age of 18, and she worked on various musical productions with great success. She became noticed as a singer and became lead vocalist for the Heartbreakers, a band formed of multi-talented musicians whose ability to switch between Samba to Jazz and even to Salsa won many plaudits and they shared the stage with Wynton Marsalis, Zizi Possi and Chucho Valdez and his band, Irakere.

Andrea then went back into acting for two further years on a Brazilian musical called "Cabaret Brasil" but Andrea's love for music never quite died out and she managed to make time to sew the seeds of what was later to become the "Zumbi" album on Y Brasil.

With Y Brasil, Andrea made a daring move, but it was one she was looking for. YBrasil hooked Andrea up with musicians such as Otto and the drummer/percussionist of Nação Zumbi, Pupilo. As she says herself, "The album is unquiet MPB. It's not obvious. It's MPB for the mob to dance to.

Her show is a mesmeric mix of samba, tropicalia, acid-jazz & electro dance. With her attractive looks and stage presence, her performances in Brazil brought very positive responses from audiences in São Paulo and at the Pro Rock festival in Recife. In New York, she performed at the S.O.B. club to equally great acclaim.
