Coming from Brooklyn would make it very unlikely that the bleak wastelands of Macclesfield would provide much inspiration for anyone’s art, but with The Rogers Sisters, it is undoubtedly their focal point.
Ignoring the title track for a moment or two, flip over to the far superior ‘The Conversation’ which sees the sisters swap lead vocal duties with third member, Miyuki Furtado, and incessantly turn into a reborn foetus of Joy Division’s more upbeat side. Complete with Pierson-esque girly backing vocals! “We’re all unhappy and we’re all unkind” repeat the enigmatic Jennifer and Laura like semi-lobotomised robots in a dishwasher factory, and thus, Editors’ ‘Munich’ excepted, the most accurate statement of intent to 2005’s seemingly never ending tribute to angular post-punk muzak is complete.
As for the title track? It’s standard American college indie-rock fare that the likes of Belly were doing better years before, but hey, that’s what [skip] buttons were made for, right?
