The Killers

Mr. Brightside

Label: Lizard King Records Release Date: 24/05/2004

6086
Ross by Ross Bennett May 14th, 2004

This might be the one ya know. With the sun surely on its way, The Killers re-release may just be The Tune of the moment. Its infectious melody is destined to turn thousands of wandering, dreaming music lovers faces to the sky and thank whoever lives up there that someone’s put out a song that bounces, talks, and breathes. David Keuning’s driving lick pushes Mr. Brightside forward with a baited wistfulness straight out of indie-guitar heaven and Brandon Flowers' keys and vocals, although probably not to everyone’s liking, provide the perfect dressing.

The lyrics tell a story of jealous realisation "It started out with a kiss / How did it end up like this?", the chorus swoons and pounds and the bridge kicks ass. With its definite indie-pop resonance, it’s a song that will take people either way, and it’ll be interesting to see whether their imminent debut album contains any other tunes of this quality. But in Mr. Brightside the Las Vegas quartet have created a colourful, rollicking gem that will set dancefloors alight across the land. The lights are on, baby.
