Eastern Lane - Andrew, Danny, Derek, and Stuart - hail from Berwick On Tweed but the sound of their new single ‘Saffron’ is very much New York topped off with a Lydon-esque yelp.
‘Saffron’, like any good pop song, clocks in at under two and a half minutes. But it is largely unremarkable. Indeed, while listening to it one may spend this time making lazy but correct comparisons to The Strokes or The Vines while feeling they could be doing something more useful like gardening or doing the washing up.
Lavish praise has been heaped on Eastern Lane: the NME said their last single ‘Feed Your Addiction’ was ‘fierce and swaggering’; in May 2003, DiS called Eastern Lane’s debut album ‘Shades Of Black’ "simply stunning". Sadly, ‘Saffron’ is anything but. Disappointing and uninspiring maybe but stunning? No way.
