This wasn't what I'd normally expect as a trailblazer for a second LP. Instead of a flame lettered statement of intent written across the sky, this is more like writing “Wash me” on the back of a white van. Boring.
Recent claims that they want to move away from their spontaneous vibe toward a more “organic, acoustic vibe” seemed to confirm my worst fears. This track could do with a firework wedged firmly between it’s arse cheeks. As usual with The Coral there’s a strong Mersey beat vibe with a bit of Madness lobbed on top. But this effort summons up words like mild, diet, VH1 and semolina; and phrases like “not tonight, dear” and “I’ll just put my feet up for a minute”.
'Don’t Think You’re The First' crosses that fine line between Herman's Hermits and The La's, and that line was put there for a reason.
