Not to be mistaken with Londoners The Capes, Nottingham-based Cape Canaveral deal in a completely different kettle of fish. On this, their first EP for Seismic Records, they demonstrate their ability to create beautifully layered emotional rock songs, courtesy of carefully structured guitar melodies interwoven with yearning vocals. The three tracks here are all reminiscent of the awesome and underrated Penfold, in the way they use intricate and prolonged guitar riffs to generate a laid back yet dramatic, ache-ridden mood. Just what I like to hear…
Recorded in early 2001, Cape Canaveral have undoubtedly matured musically since the inception of these songs, and live are known to be of a far heavier disposition. Basically they rock out way more than you might assume. This EP only displays one singular facet of their sound, and with recording of their album currently underway, the diversity and complexity of the CC live experience will soon be exposed.
