In recent years there has been a growing obsession with the so-called 'summer anthem'. You know the records I mean. Really upbeat, catchy, and just downright excellent pop songs that everyone seems to like. _The Rockafeller Skank_ is one such example. The reason people attach such faith to these songs is because the charts during the summer are a depressing wasteland of imported Ibiza club 'choons' and manufactured pop acts' abysmal cover versions.
With a little bit of help from Radio 1 and other radio stations, **Mint Royale's** latest single could have been this year's big summer anthem, for it possesses all the qualities listed above, plus one other monumental plus point in the form of vocals provided by mighty hip-hop legends **De La Soul's** Poz.
This is the type of record that really makes you want to put the stereo on rather too loud, flop back, and just sing away to your heart's content. Or maybe it's just me. I'm a soppy sod after all. With gorgeous floaty instrumentals, it's left to Poz to provide some gentle vocals that make you pine for the days of_The Magic Number_ and _Me, Myself & I_.
In some ways it's an odd combination. Upcoming Manchester dance duo responsible for tracks on their debut album (_On The Ropes_) that were remixes of a tune they heard once in an Indian restaurant in Rusholme, combined with a member of one of the most famous, pioneering and successful hip-hop acts of all time. But the sheer quality of the talent involved makes it work, and is proof that any good musicians can work together regardless of their generic backgrounds.
Whilst this is unlikely to equal the top 20 success of their **Lauren Laverne** collaboration _Don't Falter_, it is an even lovelier song than even that was, and is deserving of greater success. Radio 1's decision not to playlist this is infuriating, but not surprising, as Radio 1 is crap after all. But it will deny millions of people the chance to hear something special. It's one of the singles of the year so far, in my opinion.
