1 Giant Leap

Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost

Label: Palm Pictures Release Date: 02/03/2001

chrisnettleton by Chris Nettleton March 9th, 2001

This DVD/CD single package is effectively a trailer for the 1 Giant Leap DVD/CD/LP Project which will come out later this year.

This is the future. …at least the way I've always seen it. A project that, from the outset, has been 100% multimedia. Music and visuals created and recorded together, filling my head with masses of information , when a plain CD would just fill it with tunes. I watched the DVD several times..The music is so ALIVE, so full of the vibrant rhythms of the world, and yet completely state of the art, the visuals, a documentary of the travels of Jamie Catto and Duncan Bridgeman around the world, collaborating with a myriad of musicians and wordsmiths who may be unknown to most of our ears…but also the likes of Michael Stipe, Dennis Hopper, Arrested Development, Stewart Copeland… people we know all too well.

In this 'taster' package there is a beautiful track called 'Lilith', with some amazing atmospheric melodies by Eddi Reader, sounding somewhere between Bjork and Sinead O'Connor.

As with Faithless, the music here is steeped in class. Though it's probably not designed to, I think this album will really knock well known collaborations like Unkle into a cocked hat. Perhaps it's because of the quality of the contributors. (sometimes I've got the impression that guest vocalists on Dance records are chosen on the basis of their public profile rather than ability).

There is a lot of information here, and it's quite difficult to know how to review this…maybe I've not got a handle on how to approach multimedia reviews!…However… all the information does tell me that 1 Giant Leap will be one of the SEMINAL works of 2001, and however you do it, it should be experienced!
