David Harvey

Demo E.P.

Label: Release Date: 26/09/2005

rubbafish by Colin Weston September 30th, 2005

Many musicians harbour ambitions of going solo but are never quite ready to take that extra step and go it alone. After several years playing bass in bands around the Chelmsford area David Harvey has taken that step and there is real promise in what he has produced.

Musically he's part David Ford, part Tom McRae but it isn't just Harvey that makes this so promising. Backing him up is Liz Townsend on cello and piano, and in the same way that Lisa Hannigan separates Damien Rice from the pack, Liz does the same for David.

'Cinderella' is as delicate and fragile as a sugarcoated snowflake with acoustic strumming and cellos supporting the dual harmonies, carrying the song through to its conclusion. At a polar extreme is 'Love Terrorist', which is more Auteurs à la 'Lenny Valentino' than anything else, picking up the tempo and attitude in the best possible way. It's not all sweetness and light though, with 'Probably Something' sounding slightly uninspired; although it has some good ideas doesn't seem to be able to carry them out.

This guy has only been going it alone for a few months, and for a debut, the promise is here for all to see.
