Don't tease me like that. For a minute, or for three and a half minutes to be precise, I thought this demo of Southampton five-piece Euphorian Sound was going to be a complete waste of time. The opening track on this three song CD is called "Better Things". And my God it's terrible.
It's so unremarkable. It sounds like a million other Led Zep wannabe bands, it sounds like a bad Placebo B-Side, it sounds tired, boring and formulaic. I was more or less ready to throw the CD case at the wall and pour myself a Horlicks. But then the next tracks begins.
The delicate "Awake" is a thousand times better. The chiming, gently played electric guitar intro, the raw, emotional feel of it all. It's a memorable, moving and powerful song, with a hypnotic, haunting, and wholly memorable chorus.
Finally, the mostly acoustic "Intermediate" also hits the Buckley spot. A 6 minute epic, it peaks and troughs until it reaches a suitably orgasmic conclusion. It’s worthy of any NAM band worth their salt. It’s a ‘stop-what-your-doing’ kind of song.
If Euphorian Sound stick to what they do best, emotional guitar epics, then they'll do well. That's IF, mind......
