Hmm, live albums have always been a bit hit & miss in my book. NOFX did it. ‘A’ did it and Soundgarden did it on B-sides. But I don’t know whether it’s the lack of onstage banter [“Oh, look at all those middle fingers” being about as interesting as it gets] or the total lack of in-studio polishing or manipulation but this really doesn’t do Pennywise justice. Sure they play amazingly well & Byron’s drum rolls are as crazy as ever but it really does not compare to the feeling of actually being there. The time I saw ‘em at Leeds ’99 goes down as one of my all-time fave shows, jiving & singing along all night then being one of the first onstage during the stage invasion & who-owing alongside Randy’s mic to ‘Bro Hymn’.
Seeing as I’m listening to this in my room on a CD player it just sort of acts as a raw-sounding greatest hits album with a Minor Threat cover chucked in. I guess you could look at the 20 montage pages of photos taken during the year-long ‘Straight Ahead’ tour and try and spot yourself.
