st vincent, the nom de plume of annie clark, releases the first single to be taken from her long-awaited sophomore album 'actor'. the writing process for 'actor' was certainly an idiosyncratic one. annie clark took to immersing herself in some of her favourite films - 'badlands', 'pierrot le fou', 'the wizard of oz', 'stardust memories', 'sleeping beauty' - and then beginning each song as a secret film score. the resulting eleven tracks combine the fantasy of disney, the sweep of morricone, david mamet's unsettling dramatic form and the alienation of philip roth.
