swedish superstars-in-waiting sad day for puppets release their debut uk single on strictly limited-edition seven-inch on sonic cathedral. the band were formed in late-2006 in the stockholm suburb of blackeberg, when songwriter and guitarist martin kallholm joined forces with fellow guitarist marcus sandgren and singer anna eklund. the trio bonded over their love of fuzz and feedback and began playing shows with bassist alex svenson-metes and drummer micael back. by 2008, thanks to mutual friends the television personalities, they had been hand-picked to support mgmt on their swedish dates. the a-side, 'marble gods', starts off like a cross between something from the first concretes album and dinosaur jr circa 'where you been'; an irresistible and irrepressible pop melody mixed with a brilliant and beautiful noise. the minute-long coda at the end (the best - the only? - coda on a single since teenage fanclub's 'the concept' way back in 1991) takes the j mascis homage even further. is that really a split-second of the guitar solo from 'get me'? frankly, when it's this good, who cares? 'big waves', over on the aa-side, shows a more delicate side of the band. a glorious, almost hymnal ode to lost love, complete with beautiful vocal harmonies courtesy of anna's kid sister annika, it sounds - rather wonderfully - like lush covering a long-lost everly brothers song atop a phil spector-sized wall of sound. 'marble gods' is taken from sad day for puppets' debut album, 'unknown colors', which will be released on sonic cathedral recordings in may. ....release date: 02/03/2009
