Must... not... mention... Busted.
Former Busted man (ooops!) Charlie Simpson will forever be trying, possibly in vain, to tear his name away from that boyhood pursuit. No matter how much he tries, he’ll always be remembered as the guy who did ‘What I Go To School For’ and ‘Thunderbirds Are Go’.
‘We Apologise For Nothing’ – the second single to be lifted from Fightstar’s forthcoming second album One Day Son This Will All Be Yours – swaps the upbeat pop ditties of Simpson’s formative years for pained vocals, double bass drums and meaty guitar crunches. It picks up from where the band's Grand Unification debut left off, upping the emo ante in a manner suiting musicians taking their project seriously.
And it isn’t bad at all, really. Once the over-the-top theatrics and (faux?) angst in Simpson’s lyrics cease being funny, ‘We Apologise For Nothing’ is a fairly enjoyable affair. It’s clean-cut and radio friendly, but with no sacrifice of the heaviness that may have been a factor in their parting of ways with Island Records following their debut. At the very least, this single should earn them some timely respect from the rock contingent proper.
Maybe, just maybe, Fightstar's continuing success might ultimately do away with the overwrought anguish presently infecting Simpson’s lyrics come their third album. I doubt it, though.
