A bunch of musicologists (old men who probably used to be gynaecologists but got struck off) have declared that Macca never Nat King Cole (stole) the song, which is credited as being co-written with John Lennon.
"There are some uncanny similarities: the overlap of lyrics, the multiple rhyming emphasis on words ending with 'ay', the similar scan of the songs. McCartney didn't hijack the song, but he must have been inspired by it." said one of these musicologists to The Sunday Times.
Macca's spokesman said they were about as similar as 'Get Back' and 'God Save The Queen'. Indeed. 'Yesterday' has been covered over 2,000 times and played over 6,000,000 times on the radio.
‘Yesterday’ starts, "Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away/Now I need a place to hide away" whereas Answer Me contains the line: "Yesterday, I believed that love was here to stay, won't you tell me where I've gone astray."
Surely though, they’d have to have up Placebo’s Brian Molko, who’s lyrics in unreleased Placebo track ‘Fiddler’ echo ‘Yesterday’s’ structure and form: "Saturday, I potato painted Kurt Cobain, then I wrapped my knob in cellophane, and now I’d like to eat some Special K..."
