Traditionally, the radio station uses a tier system of A, B and C lists which are updated weekly, with the A list records garnering the most plays during that week. There will now be a 1-Upfront List which will include five tracks from emerging artists, with the five songs being played 2-4 times during the week. The station also plans to increase how many times tracks on the B and C list get played each day by decreasing the number of times each track on the A list get spun.
Radio One head of music and live events Alex Jones-Donelly said:
“In Radio One’s daytime output, we’ve never got the opportunity to play all the records we’d like to play.
We feel there are some artists we really should be trying to give a little bit of a break to, which otherwise would struggle to make it onto daytime”.
Clearly, this is a good thing. But the questions we pose you, the knowledgeable reader are:
Will it make a difference?
What sort of acts do you think Radio 1 will highlight for the 1-Upfront List?
Who do you think should be getting the exposure?
