Howard W Campbell Jnr
is the leading character in Kurt Vonnegut's 'Mother Night'. He acts as an American spy in Nazi Germany by posing as a defector cum-radio propagandist broadcasting messages in code in the course of his announcements.
After the war he is discovered and tried as an actual Nazi, as only a few people knew the truth and cannot reveal it.
Vonnegut, posing as the editor of the memoir, offers the following moral to the story - "We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be."
