IShotTheDeputy said that
"we have not oppressed the pope and his followers for hundreds of years"
Presumably, since I can only think of a handful of examples in modern history of direct opression of Muslims by a British government, you mean things like rhetorical support for the Israeli government and tolerating people like Mubarak, Saudi Royal Family, Baathist Iraq etc etc.
If that's what you meant, you've trespassed all over your own argument. My own country, Poland, was cynically traded into the Soviet sphere of influence in the aftermath of the second world war. It's also a predominantly Catholic country (80%). We tolerated military dictatorships in Spain and Portugal. We arguably very directly oppressed Catholics in Ireland.
This is only what Britain has done. If you want to talk about 'Western' opression of Muslims then you can add Nicaragua, Chile, Colombia, Panama, East Timor and Croatia to the list.
