A girl from work mention in the pub the other night that she's going to a wedding in a field at someone's big house in the country and there will be alpacas in the field free to roam around. She reckoned that they can a bit irked all the time and like to hiss/spit at you. Is this true and if it is true then what are good ways to pacify them?

When she told me I said I sort of know of someone who has alpacas so I'll ask. Thankfully she didn't ask how I know this person.
