been thinking about this a bit recently, given the rise the far right is enjoying in the West, from Le Pen to Trump to Wilders (not even mentioning Britain...).

the sort of...clash there is between the way people like us on DiS are and where the support for these figures coming from puts me in mind of what you had around the Spanish Civil War. Republicans against Francoists, essentially.

of course, with the Spanish Civil War, you have many notable (either at the time of latterly) people who went off to fight for the losing side.

without wishing to get into a discussion of "is there a western country heading for civil war", i was thinking about what kind of scenario either
a) you'd go off and join an International Brigades type group fighting for an ideal, not necessarily in a civil war but that'd seem a reasonable example
or
b) you, if you were running a country, would actually do military action against another western country

how severe would a country, or a population's, direction have to be?
