Bailiffs coming into your house
A couple of weeks ago I got a hand-delivered letter through the door, with a "High Court Enforcement" (or something) stamp on the front. The address was right, but I'd never heard of the person on the envelope. I asked the landlord if it was an old tenant and if there was a forwarding address, since it looked Quite Important, but the landlord had never heard of them, so they haven't lived there in the past five years. Earlier this week another letter arrived, same deal, URGENT written on the envelope for good measure. Decided to open it, and as you might expect, it's some High Court enforcement / debt collection / bailiff deal chasing someone for £6k. We phoned the number and explained the situation, they said it was a common situation, but asked us to provide our tenancy agreement to prove we lived there, which seems pretty excessive, but whatever.
The crazy thing is, on the letter it said that if I (or the person they're after) failed to respond, they were entitled to enter the property with a locksmith and take stuff to the value of their claim. WTF? Could they actually do that, or is that a scare story? If they took a load of my stuff, would I have any come back? Seems absolutely batshit.
