EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT
Embrace of the Serpent (Spanish: El abrazo de la serpiente) is a 2015 Colombian adventure drama film directed by Ciro Guerra. The film won the Art Cinema Award in the Directors' Fortnight section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival[3][4] and it was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards.[5]
Two European explorers - one in 1909 and the other in the 1940s - search the Colombian Amazon for a flower alleged to have healing properties, with the help of the same native shaman, Karamakate, the last surviving member of his tribe.
"Embrace of the Serpent" is simply a work of art, and one of the most singular cinematic experiences you could hope to have in Cannes, or anywhere really. It’s an absorbing, even thrilling head trip. It is a Heart-of-Darkness voyage of discovery. It is a lament for all the lost plants and peoples of the world. But it will maybe live longest for me in Karamakate: an immaculate portrait of the unfathomable loneliness and crushing survivor’s guilt that comes with being the last of one’s kind.
