Metahaven - The Sprawl
sprawl.space for anyone interested in taking a look.
Was lucky enough to catch this as part of the Brighton Festival programme. Fascinating and very beautifully put-together documentary framing itself as 'propaganda about propaganda' looking at:
- the pervasive influence of planetary-scale computation incl. how the interconnectedness of everything has diluted/broken our traditional (Westphalian) notions of how states are delineated and differentiated. The claim is (I think) that a horizontal topology that maps the world as distinguished by borders has mutated so that everything is part of a 'stack', with multiple different players claiming rights to and exerting control over every area.
- how states like Russia are advertising their power to brainwash/disseminate propaganda overtly precisely because it displays their power and scale, i.e. they aren't trying to convince people or purvey propaganda undetected - they're deliberately making it known they're taking a biased stance that's unconcerned with truth to show they CAN.
- how engagement with terrorist cells, activists, freedom fighters, etc. is increasingly mediated by/takes place on the Internet and through use of multiple layers of propaganda rather than straight-up military/violent conduct
- loads of other stuff I probably didn't get
Anyone else seen it/played around on http://www.sprawl.space ? Wat u reckon?
