A really stupid question about London housing in the past
Right, so a lot of my friends in South London in particular live in flats that have been made by carving up massive townhouses. Often the places are four storeys high, making several flats in each house.
Presumably these houses were built as huge homes. Here's my (stupid) question: In the olden days (not really sure when I mean), who used to live in such huge houses? Like, what kind of jobs did people do to afford such huge properties? Or did several generations of a family live in the same place? Or were there like servants and shit?
And where did the poor people live, before social housing and tower blocks and stuff?
Please help me, I don't understand history.
