I re-watched the three original Mad Max movies.
I really enjoyed Fury Road, so thought i'd re-watch the originals having not seen them since I was a kid.
Pretty fun all in. I'd imagine the first one was pretty exciting on its release, but whilst being stylistically pretty cool hasn't dated overly well I didn't think - and you can tell had a much smaller budget than the following two.
The second one is by far the best, and the best mix between action sequences and story.
I remember the the third one being the best as a kid, but mainly for the fight scene in the Thunderdome. Watching it now it's a bit of a mess and I thought the amazonian-esque kids were pretty annoying. It was also unclear why, when Max goes back to Bartertown with the kids, he risks his life to save the Master. It was either out of some sympathy that [*spoiler*] the Blaster had been killed and turns out to have had learning difficulties, or he thinks that the Master's skills/knowledge would be useful but it's never really explained. Tina Turner does pretty well, but think it would have been better with Grace Jones.
The thing that was consistent across all of them though was really, really bad sound mixing. So much of the speaking was either mumbled or really low in the mix so you couldn't make it out properly.
Not sure how many times you can remake the same movie in slightly different scenarios, but the latest one seems to have breathed some life back into the franchise and made a lot of money, so wouldn't be surprised if they make a few more of them. I hope so.
Basically, just use this thread to discuss Mad Max...
